You're sizing up an interaction — a negotiation, a difficult conversation, a sales call — and your instinct is to reach for a better argument. Stop. Before reaching for language, place the situation on the graph. How far does this person actually need to move from their current position (small distance: agree to a follow-up call; large distance: change a deeply held position)? How much time do you actually have (thirty seconds at a networking event; six months of a sales cycle)? If the distance required is large and the time available is short, no amount of better wording closes that gap — you need leverage on FATE-level structures (focus, authority, tribe, emotion), not a better sentence. If the distance is small and the time is long, elaborate technique is overkill; ordinary rapport and patience will get there. Most wasted persuasion effort in ordinary life is misallocated exactly here — people deploy heavyweight technique for near-zero-distance asks, or expect a clever line to do what actually requires either more time or deeper leverage.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence: The sixteen-hour false-confession statistic, the Milgram results, and the smoke-filled-room studies are all independently documented phenomena outside Hughes's own work — he's citing real, if sometimes contested, research to ground a framework that is otherwise his own invention.1 The graph itself (red dot / green dot / missing bridge) is presented as Hughes's personal synthesis, not an externally validated model — there's no citation trail for the axes themselves, only for the extreme cases used to motivate them.

Tensions: The model implies a continuous, universal metric — that any two people's "distance from normal behavior" can be meaningfully plotted on the same vertical axis.
