1. Real angels vs. defensive hallucinations. Kalsched insists the numinous presences are genuine encounters with a second world — not symptoms to decode. A materialist reading sees only primitive defenses (dissociation, projective identification). The book calls the reductive reading a "one-eyed" half-truth, but cannot prove the metaphysical claim. The tension is load-bearing, not resolved.
2. Grace vs. choice (Kalsched vs. Symington). For Kalsched the lifegiver often arrives as grace — an angel appears, a being of light floods the room. For Symington the lifegiver only comes into being when chosen, by a creative act of reason. Same phenomenon, opposite emphasis on agency.
3. Self-healing vs. resolution by analysis (Jung vs. Winnicott). Winnicott: Jung's self-cure through active imagination was a partial fix inside a psychotic structure. Kalsched: the inner world is a real second avenue of development, not a patched breast. Whether the second world is primary or derivative is the whole argument.
4. Was the defense nature or nurture? Jung read archetypal evil (Wotan, the bad seed) as the explanation. Kalsched insists the post-traumatic anti-life factor is nurtured — installed by real early trauma — and that the archetypal-evil reading is a clinically useless dead end.
