Vital-Being Contract Siddhis — The Low Road to Powers

A street magician makes a ring vanish and reappear inside a sealed envelope. A guru materializes sacred ash out of empty air. You want to know how the trick is done — and the unsettling answer Sraddhalu gives is that, in a lot of cases, there is no trick and there is no power. There is a deal. Something else does the work. The performer holds out his hand and an entity drops the object into the world for him.1 He produces nothing. He only pays.

That is the first thing to feel before any of the metaphysics: the "miracle" is rented, not owned. The person you are watching is a storefront. The actual operator is behind the counter, and the rent comes due in a currency you cannot see.

What this actually is

A vital-being contract siddhi is a power that runs on an outside entity instead of your own consciousness. You want an effect — materialize an object, sway a room, heal a body, see a face at a distance. Rather than growing the consciousness that could do it from the inside, you strike an arrangement with a being of the vital world — an elemental, a spirit, a low deity — and it produces the effect. "You do nothing, you just pay it back in some form energetically."2 The being acts; you settle the bill.

Sraddhalu's blunt summary of where most people's idea of "powers" actually sits: "our idea of siddhis is generally of a very low grade and of a vital grade."2 When ordinary people picture a siddhi — bending a spoon, pulling fire from a song, reading a stranger's mind — they are almost always picturing this. The Mother says the same of the whole field: "what men call miracles nowadays are almost always performed by vital beings or by men who are in contact with vital beings."3

This is the low road to powers, and the page exists to mark it clearly so it does not get confused with the high road. The high road is the supramental siddhi — the power that grows because your consciousness widened to include it, that frees you and expands you. The low road is the contract — the power that arrives intact, on loan, with a being attached to the other end of the rope.

How the contract works — and why it costs more than it looks

Picture a loan with no stated interest rate, where the lender writes the terms after you have already spent the money.

The mechanics are simple at the top. The being has a capacity you lack — it can move physical substance, flood a room with feeling, lift a layer of someone's sickness. You have something it wants: access to the physical world, "material substance which give them a better hold of the physical world,"4 the energy thrown off by a crowd, your own life-force. So a part of the being's consciousness "hooks into you and through you now does whatever it is."5 You become the channel. The effect is real. The audience is impressed. Nothing about the surface looks like a debt.

The cost is structural, and it runs one direction. First, the power itself is low-grade — "very crude and coarse and harmful to the spiritual,"6 and if you could sense the being behind it, you would find it ugly. Second, every use "only increases the rule of the vital world and the lower vital beings in the physical."6 You are not just borrowing; you are handing the lower vital more territory inside you each time. Third — and this is the part that makes it a trap rather than a transaction — the being does not stay outside the storefront. It "entrenches into them, hooks into them, and lives through them,"7 and over time "your thinking, feeling, value systems gets warped more and more to reflect that of the being."7 The rent is paid in you. You pay in the slow conversion of your own values into the being's.

Contrast the supramental siddhi, which has no lender. It comes from your own widening consciousness, the Divine Mother working as your higher self, and it leaves you freer and larger than before.8 Same apparent power on the surface — an effect in the world. Opposite source, opposite direction of cost. One expands the person; the other slowly eats him.

What this gives the rest of the vault

This page is the dark twin every powers-page needs. The vault already holds the bright account — siddhis as supramental, siddhis as freed habit, the architecture of vyapti and prakamya and the powers of will. This page supplies the counterfeit so the genuine article can be told apart. It is the diagnostic floor of the whole Siddhis hub: before you can ask "is this power real?" you have to be able to ask "is this power mine, or is something else doing it and billing me?"

It also gives the vault a clean bridge into its possession and deity material. The vault is full of beings who attach, ride, and reshape their hosts — Bhairava sadhana, the madness of divine possession, the diagnosis of yogi possession. This page names the mechanism those traditions live inside, from the integral-yoga angle that judges it: a contract with a being is a debt that warps you, and the warping is the interest.

Case study — the satanic music industry as a rent-power contract

Take the worked example Sraddhalu reaches for, because it shows the whole arc — the deal, the visible payoff, the hidden feeding, and the warping — in a single figure.9

A performer rises to enormous fame in an unusually short time. The content is coarse, even crude, and yet the fame is real and fast. From the outside it looks like raw charisma or luck. What is actually happening, in this telling, is that "the deity attaching itself and then giving the charismatic power."9 The performer signed the contract and got the storefront's marquee.

Now watch the live show, because this is where the energy becomes visible. The performer makes gestures — crude, coarse, often sexual — and the crowd convulses: "large masses suddenly shouting, screaming, jumping, losing consciousness."10 And you can see the transfer. "The force moving from the performer into the crowd like a wave. It ripples out... it's actually a vital energy that's going through the crowd."10 The crowd is not just excited; it is being played "like toys, puppets,"10 and the performer is the puppet one rung up — the channel "through which that being entity works on the crowds."10

Here is the double feeding that makes it a feedback loop rather than a one-time payment. The being "feed[s] on them as much as it feeds on the crowds."11 The crowd's energy goes up the chain; the performer's life is consumed at the same time. He thinks he is being paid in fame. He is being drained in the same motion he is being paid.

And then the warping closes the loop. The more it works, the deeper the being "entrenches... hooks into them and lives through them,"7 until "thinking, feeling, value systems gets warped more and more to reflect that of the being. You become not only a puppet, you become the image of the being itself."7 The fame was the bait. The hook was always the conversion. By the time the performer might want out, there is less of him left to want it — he has become coarse because the being is coarse, and the values that would object have already been overwritten. Sraddhalu notes the chilling detail that not all such beings even seek full possession, "because for them it binds them too much into the material"7 — the partial possession is a deliberate setting, not an accident, which makes it crueler still.

Set this beside Yogananda walking into a shop and insisting on paying the exact price the shopkeeper had silently prayed to receive — a synchronicity that widens and frees both people.12 Same category on paper: a person with uncanny power. Opposite everything else. One is the Divine Mother moving through a free instrument; the other is a low being eating a captured one.

Implementation — recognizing the hook before it sets

You are at a show, or watching a video of one, or sitting with a teacher whose powers seem undeniable. Don't reach for belief or disbelief yet. Drop your attention a layer below the effect and feel for the quality of the force.

Notice the texture first. Genuine higher force feels clean, quiet, and oddly impersonal — it leaves you lighter. The vital-contract force is loud and sticky; it pulls at you, it wants something, and if you are honest you can feel it reaching into you, not lifting you out. Watch the crowd, not the performer: are people becoming more themselves, more lucid, or are they losing consciousness, going slack, getting played? A wave that ripples through a room and switches people off is the tell.10

Now turn the question on the operator. Ask quietly: is this power making this person freer, or coarser? Over months and years, is he expanding — kinder, clearer, more his own — or is he hardening into a single crude image of himself? Rented power converges on a type. Owned power diverges into a person. If the man is slowly becoming the gesture, you are watching the rent get paid.

And keep one line in your chest as the whole filter: a gift that costs you nothing up front and everything later is not a gift. It is a hook with bait on it. The moment a power arrives whole, effortless, and flattering, that is the moment to be most suspicious — because that is exactly how the contract is designed to feel.

The failure mode — the gift that turns out to be a hook

The signature failure is mistaking the bait for a blessing. It arrives looking like the best thing that ever happened to you: sudden ease, sudden draw, a power you did not earn and do not understand, landing right when you wanted it. There is no struggle, no slow widening, no cost you can name. That very smoothness is the diagnostic. Real growth into a power is gradual and is paid in consciousness-change up front; the contract is instant and paid in installments you only notice once they have started warping you.

The second sign is convergence toward coarseness. The powers are "crude, coarse, ugly,"6 and they make their host crude in turn. If a person's gift is real but their values keep degrading in lockstep with their reach — louder, harder, hungrier, more contemptuous — the gift is feeding on them. Watch the trajectory, not the moment.

The third sign is increasing rule of the lower vital — the felt sense that you are less in charge of yourself than you used to be, that something else has opinions inside you now, that the appetites driving the power are not quite yours. "Greater and greater possession,"7 from the inside, does not feel like possession. It feels like becoming more "yourself" — except the self is the being's image. That is the cruelest part of the failure: by the time it is far enough along to see, the part of you that could object has already been bought.

Evidence, tensions, open questions

The claims here are a transcript record of Sri Aurobindo's and the Mother's positions as taught by Sraddhalu Ranade — practitioner testimony, not laboratory finding. Every claim is [PARAPHRASED], with the Mother's own words read aloud marked where they occur.3 The phenomenology of the music-show "energy wave" is offered as observable ("if you see the videos you'll see like a wave that goes through"10) but is interpreted through a vital-being cosmology that is not independently verifiable — a believer reads the wave as an entity feeding; a skeptic reads it as ordinary mass arousal and stagecraft. The vault keeps both readings live; the behavioral-mechanics handshake below holds the second one.

The load-bearing tension is left unresolved on purpose: from the surface, the contract siddhi and the supramental siddhi can produce the same effect. The only way to tell them apart is by source and by what they do to the person over time — and both of those are read by discernment, not measurement. That is precisely the gap the discernment material in the hub is built to address.

Open questions worth holding. Where exactly is the line between a "low" deity-contract that possesses and a "high" being-contract that merely "shapes you into their agenda... which may be benevolent or you may have the illusion it is benevolent"?13 — Sraddhalu says the same mechanism runs up the grades, which makes even benevolent-seeming transmissions suspect. And: does this account collapse all genuine devotional deity-relationship into a warning, or only the rented-power kind? The vault's devotional and Tantric pages assume relationship with deities is the path, not the trap — that contradiction is real and is not papered over here.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow Patañjali and you treat the vibhūtis as real attainments that arise along the path and must be renounced at the gate of samādhi — powers as a milestone and a snare, but yours, generated by saṃyama. Follow the Tantric and Bhairava material already in the vault and you do something Aurobindo's account would flag hard: you deliberately invoke the deity, take its power in, even seek the ride. Sit inside that practice and the attaching being is not a predator but a partner; possession can be ecstasy, the doorway, the point.

Now follow Aurobindo through Sraddhalu and the floor tilts. The same act — taking a being's power into yourself — is recast as signing a contract you cannot read, with an entity that will slowly overwrite you. What the Tantric experiences as union, this account experiences as the early, pleasant phase of possession. Neither side is lying about what they feel; they are feeling the same mechanism from opposite valuations. The Tantric trusts the being's grade and the practitioner's container; Aurobindo trusts neither and routes everything through the Divine Mother instead, so that "even if these [higher beings] come, you receive what comes as sent by her through them. But the allegiance is still to her."14 The convergence underneath the fight: all three agree the power is not originally yours. They split violently on whether you should ever borrow it directly, or only receive it through a source that cannot bill you.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Psychology — The Addiction–Attachment Continuum. The vital-being contract is, structurally, an addiction with a metaphysics. The addiction page describes the same trade the satanic-music performer makes: a relationship that hands you a reliable, intense reward up front while quietly restructuring you around the source until the source is your structure. Map them term for term. The "gift" the being grants — fame, charisma, effortless effect — is the early high, the part that costs nothing and feels like the best deal you ever made. The "paying it back energetically"2 is tolerance and withdrawal: the bill that arrives later and keeps growing. The warping of "thinking, feeling, value systems... to reflect that of the being"7 is exactly what the addiction literature means by the substance reorganizing the self around its own continuation. And the cruelest shared feature is the one this page calls the hook disguised as a gift: in both, by the time the cost is visible, the part of the person that would refuse has already been recruited into wanting more. The insight neither domain produces alone: name the Faustian bargain at the center of both and you see that "rent-now-pay-forever" is not a moral failing or a spiritual one but a structural one — any system that delivers reward before cost and lets the supplier write the terms afterward will convert its host, whether the supplier is a chemical, a relationship, or a vital being. Spirituality does not exempt you from the architecture of addiction; it just changes who is holding the other end of the contract. The practical payoff: the same discernment that catches a substance hook — "is this making me freer or smaller over time?" — is the discernment that catches a powers hook. Watch trajectory, not the high.

Behavioral-mechanics — The Demagogue as Hypnotist and Crowd Turn and Conviction Contagion. Strip the entity out of Sraddhalu's account and you are left with a precise, secular description of charismatic mass capture, which is exactly what the behavioral-mechanics material maps without any metaphysics at all. The "force moving from the performer into the crowd like a wave"10 that makes "large masses suddenly shouting, screaming, jumping, losing consciousness"10 is the demagogue-as-hypnotist phenomenon: a single charged figure lowering a crowd's individual consciousness until it becomes one suggestible body, and conviction-contagion is the wave itself — the rippling switch-off as the room synchronizes. The two accounts are describing the same observable event and disagreeing only about the cause. Behavioral-mechanics says: arousal, suggestion, mirror-neuron contagion, de-individuation, stagecraft tuned to bypass the critical mind. Sraddhalu says: a vital being feeding through the performer into the crowd. The insight that neither domain generates alone lives in the overlap of their predictions. The behavioral account explains beautifully why the crowd loses consciousness, but it treats the performer as the agent — the skilled operator working the room. Sraddhalu's account adds the half the behavioral frame misses: the operator is also being consumed. The hypnotist is himself hypnotized; the puppet-master is a puppet one rung up, "feed[s] on them as much as it feeds on the crowds."11 Put the two together and you get something sharper than either: in genuine charismatic mass capture, there may be no free agent at all — the demagogue is not running the contagion so much as riding it, converging on a cruder and cruder version of himself as the dynamic that captures the crowd captures him too. That reframes the whole question of charismatic-leader responsibility, and it gives the behavioral-mechanics reader a falsifiable handle: watch whether the charismatic figure expands as a person over the years or hardens into a single coarse image. Owned charisma diverges; rented charisma converges. The metaphysics is optional; the trajectory test works either way.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication: the most dangerous power is the one that arrives as a gift — whole, effortless, flattering, and free at the point of use — because that is the exact signature of a contract whose cost is deferred and whose currency is you. Difficulty is not a bug in genuine attainment; it is the up-front payment that proves you are not renting.

Generative questions:

  • If the contract siddhi and the supramental siddhi can produce identical effects, and the only difference is source and trajectory, can the difference ever be verified from outside — or is discernment of powers irreducibly first-person?
  • The same mechanism runs up the grades: a benevolent high being still "shapes you into their agenda."13 Is there any safe direct borrowing of power, or does the integral-yoga answer have to be "route everything through the Mother, never contract directly" — and what does that cost in practice?
  • The crowd at the show is being fed on and warped too, one rung down. If charismatic capture is a chain of feeding, where does it actually bottom out — and is the audience's "loss of consciousness" the same conversion the performer underwent, only faster and shallower?
