The medieval Yoginī temples are architectural oddities: circular, roofless (hypaethral), built on hilltops, with sixty-four Yoginīs ranged around the inner wall facing a central image of Bhairava.1 Why circular? Why roofless? Why sixty-four? White's answer turns the building into an instrument: "the round hypaethral Yoginī temples may be viewed as massive sundials, with the shadow of the central Bhairava gnomon pointing to a different one of the sixty-four Yoginīs every five to six days of the solar year."2 The roofless roundness lets the sun in; the central Bhairava is the gnomon (the shadow-casting stick of a sundial); and the sixty-four Yoginīs around the rim are the dial — the sun's shadow sweeps from Yoginī to Yoginī across the solar year. Sixty-four Yoginīs × ~5.7 days each ≈ 365 days. The temple is a calendar made of goddesses.
White grounds this in the Agni Purāṇa's fifty-second chapter, which describes the circle of Yoginīs arrayed around a twelve-armed Bhairava — the twelve arms "representing the solar months" — as "female Seizers (grahas) governed by the solar orb."3 So the configuration is explicitly solar: Bhairava at the center as the sun/gnomon, the Yoginī-Seizers around him as the units of solar time, the whole governed by the solar orb. White notes this "circle of goddesses arrayed around a form of Śiva… goes back to at least the period of the Ellora cave temples."4
The same solar-wheel structure appears elsewhere: a tenth-century Khiching (Orissa) sculpture shows the navagrahas (nine planets) arrayed around a polycephalic deity at the center of a solar "axle" with twelve radiating spokes; Khajuraho has miniature Sūrya shrines called ravi pīṭhas ("Sun Mounds").5 And a living astrological numerology, Yogiṇīdaśā, still links eight Yoginīs to the nine planets by the positioning of stars at a child's birth — the eighth Yoginī, Saṅkaṭā, governing two planets (Rāhu and Ketu) and thus ruling eight years instead of four, making her the most powerful.6 The Yoginī-as-time-unit survives into present-day jyotiṣa.
The mechanism is the sundial's: a fixed central shadow-caster (Bhairava the gnomon) and a circular dial of markers (the Yoginīs) that the moving shadow indexes one by one. This makes the temple a working solar clock — but it also encodes a theology. The center (Bhairava, the sun-gnomon, the still point) is where the Kaula practitioner aspires to stand: "imitating Śiva-Bhairava, [he] sought to become the 'Lord of the Circle' (cakravartin) of circles of Yoginīs as well as of the entire embodied universe."7 To occupy the gnomon's place is to become the still center around which all the Yoginī-time revolves — the cakravartin, the wheel-turner, the sovereign of the circle. This also resolves the "canonical number over names" puzzle (see Saptamātṛkā as Late Gupta Fabrication): sixty-four matters because 64 Yoginīs ≈ the days of the solar year divided into ~5.7-day units. The number is calendrical, not nominal — which is exactly why the number was fixed and the names were filler.

You can tell you've done it when you can't say why the temple is roofless or why it's sixty-four rather than some other number. A second failure is over-reading the instrument and dropping the religion — treating it as "just" a sundial and losing the cakravartin theology (the practitioner becoming the central sovereign of the Yoginī-circle and the cosmos). The temple is sundial and pantheon and mandala-of-sovereignty at once; lose any one and you've misread it. A third sign: treating the surviving Yogiṇīdaśā astrology as unrelated folk numerology rather than as the living tail of this solar-Yoginī-time complex.

The open question: is the solar-sundial function original to the Yoginī temple, or a learned overlay that arrived with the Greek-derived astronomy/astrology of the mid-first-millennium (the same importation that produced the navagraha)? White's reading converges the religious and the astronomical in a way that the two scholarly camps (iconographers vs. historians of science) usually keep apart, and the convergence is the point. An art historian sees the Yoginī temple as iconography — a pantheon in stone. A historian of astronomy sees gnomons and solar calendars as a separate, secular science. White's triangulating method (see Three Truncated Scholarly Approaches) refuses the split: the temple is both a pantheon and a sundial, and the Yoginīs are both goddesses and units of solar time. What the convergence reveals: in this tradition there is no clean line between worship and astronomy — the same circular structure that houses sixty-four goddesses tells the solar year, and the same word (graha) names a disease-demoness and a planet. The Yoginī temple is evidence that medieval Indian "religion" and "science" were one practice: to map the goddesses was to map time, and to stand at the center (Bhairava/gnomon) was to be sovereign of both. The iconographer and the astronomer are each reading half of one instrument.
The plain version: a building can be a machine — its odd shape (round, open to the sky, a fixed center, a numbered ring) is often an instrument for tracking the sun, the seasons, or the heavens, with the religious meaning and the timekeeping function fused into one object.
The Sharpest Implication If the Yoginī temple is a sundial, a pantheon, and a model of sovereignty all in one circular roofless building, then medieval Indian "religion" and "science" were never separate practices — to chart the goddesses was to chart the solar year, and the same instrument did both. Take that seriously and the modern habit of sorting the temple into "religion" (the goddesses) and bracketing the astronomy as incidental misses that the builders encoded a working calendar in the pantheon, on purpose. The uncomfortable reading is that our disciplinary boundaries (religion here, science there) would have been unintelligible to the people who built a clock out of goddesses and worshiped time by standing where its shadow falls.
