Before anything modern, there was a method: a hot bath.
A man who didn't want to father a child took one. Heat kills sperm cells, so he'd sit in hot water and the problem was handled for a while.1
That's not folklore invented after the fact. It's a real physiological effect, and it's the reason testicles hang outside the body — they need to run cooler than core temperature to work.
Any modern fertility clinic will tell a man trying to conceive to stay out of hot tubs.
So here's a fact that a pre-modern society could absolutely have discovered by observation: fertility requires coolness.
And a deity is named for it.
Adjua's name-root, jo, means to cool.2
Her function is conception, gestation and childbirth.3
The link isn't symbolic. The corpus states it as a requirement:
"Without the requisite coolness, without ojo coolness, there is no fertilization, no embryogenesis."4
Two applications, both sides:
Male. Coolness in the reproductive organs makes sperm viable. Heat destroys them.5
Female. Excessive heat in the womb disrupts fetal development.6
So the deity of coolness governs reproduction because reproduction is, physically, a cool operation.
Because you can check it and it holds.
Most of the anatomical identifications in this corpus require you to accept an etymology, then accept a functional analogy, then accept that ancient people knew something. Three steps, each contestable.
This one requires: heat impairs fertility. True. Observable. Available to any society with hot springs and attention.
The thermal claim is correct. That's rare enough in this material to be worth stating plainly.
What's asserted rather than shown is that the deity was named for it — that somebody noticed the thermal fact and encoded it in the name of the divinity who governs conception. That step is the usual one and carries the usual uncertainty.
But the substrate is solid, which is not something you can say about the pericardium-as-unguent-jar.
She has a second name-family and it needs saying, because it's a different root doing complementary work.
Awo means mother.7
Awo also means cold, or chill.8
And wo means to engender, to beget, to generate, to bring forth.9 The Kemetic side gives awa — to conceive, to be pregnant — written with a determinative of a kneeling woman with a swollen belly.10
So there are two independent roots attached to this deity, jo and awo, and both of them mean cold.
That's the strongest formal point available here. One word carrying both mother and cold could be coincidence. Two separate roots, both attached to the same divinity, both pairing generation with low temperature — that's harder to wave off.
It doesn't prove intent. It does mean the pairing is structural in the language rather than a one-off.
The chain runs: moon → tides → water retention → coolness → receptivity.11
That's the part to be careful with.
The moon genuinely raises tides. Whether it affects human water retention is not established, and the extension from tidal physics to body fluid is the corpus doing what it does — running a real phenomenon one step past its evidence.
But notice the structure is at least coherent: a lunar deity should govern coolness if the moon governs water and water governs temperature. It's a chain of reasoning rather than an assertion, and the weak link is identifiable, which is more than most of this material offers.
The word does double duty and the corpus leans on both.
Physically: low temperature, water retention, viable conception.
Socially: calm, contemplative, receptive, not hot-headed.12
And there's an Akan proverb that ties them: when the earth has good counsellors, the rain will be peaceful — where the word for peaceful is the word for cool.13
The reading: a person who is cool can receive counsel. A hot person can't — they're already reacting. Coolness is the condition of being able to take something in.
Which loops back to fertility neatly. Conception is receptivity made physical. The ovum receives. The womb receives. And in both the physical and social registers, receiving requires not being hot.
That's a genuine conceptual unity rather than a pun, and it's the best thing on this page.

You're trying to make a decision while furious and you're aware, dimly, that you're going to make it badly.
The advice is always calm down, which is useless, because calming down is the thing you can't do.
This framework says something more actionable: you cannot receive while hot. Not you'll decide badly — you literally cannot take in what you're being told. Reception is temperature-dependent.
So the move isn't to try harder to think. It's to do something that cools, and postpone the thinking.
You're around someone trying to conceive and they're stressed about it, and the stress is its own problem.
The cosmology says heat blocks conception, and means it thermally.
But it also means it in the other register, and doesn't distinguish. Whether that's an insight or a conflation depends on evidence nobody in this corpus has.
The formal argument deserves working properly, because it's the strongest structural claim in the cluster.
Root one: jo. Senses include to cool, to calm, to be at peace.14 Attached to Adjua, the deity of the moon and of conception.
Root two: awo. Senses include mother and cold, chill.15 Also attached to the same deity, as a separate title.
The observation. Two etymologically distinct roots, both naming the same divinity, both carrying coolness, and the divinity's domain is generation.
Why this is worth more than one root would be. A single polysemous word carrying mother and cold is the kind of thing that happens. Languages collide senses constantly and the collision means nothing — English cold covers temperature and emotional distance without implying a doctrine.
Two independent roots converging on the same pairing is a different object. It suggests the association is held in the language's structure rather than sitting in one accidental word.
The check that isn't run. How many other Akan words pair generation with temperature? If it's a widespread pattern the observation weakens — it's a feature of the language, not of this deity. If these two are unusual, it strengthens.
That count is cheap and would be decisive. Nobody has run it, and the corpus doesn't know it needs running.
Honest tag. [n=2 SUGGESTIVE], and the decisive test is stated: count the other generation-temperature pairings in the lexicon. If the pattern is general, this is language; if it's confined, this is doctrine.
Strongest support. The thermal fact is correct and observable without modern instruments. And two independent roots converging on coolness-plus-generation is a structural pattern rather than a single coincidence.
The tension. The lunar-to-body-water extension is unsupported and is stated in the same voice as the thermal claim, which is supported. A reader who accepts the first because the second is true has been led.
A second. The physical and social senses of coolness are used interchangeably. Sometimes that's a real conceptual unity — receptivity in both registers — and sometimes it's a slide.
Open. Run the lexical count. How common is the generation-temperature pairing across Akan generally? That single number tells you whether this cluster is doctrine or grammar.
Against Cool, Wail, Cut, Root, this page takes one sense of the cluster and shows it has a physical referent the others don't.
That page argued the four senses cohere as maintenance operations. This one shows that the cooling sense is the only one with a checkable physiological basis — the wailing and inheritance senses are interpretive, and this one isn't.
That asymmetry matters for how much the cluster can carry. A cluster with one grounded sense and three interpretive ones is a weaker object than it looks when all four are presented together.
Against The Gland That Runs the Other Glands, the establish/maintain pairing gets a thermal reading here. Asar is the pituitary — the initiating signal, the hormonal instruction. Adjua is the condition under which the instruction can be acted on.
Which is a real structural point: initiation is an event, but it requires a maintained environment to land in. Signal and substrate. Neither page states it that way and both are pointing at it.
Maslow's distinction and the coolness doctrine are describing the same prerequisite from different ends.
Deficiency-cognition is what perceiving looks like when you are running hot — driven by need, scanning for what fixes the lack, unable to see anything except in terms of its usefulness to you. Being-cognition is what perceiving looks like when the need has quieted: you can take the thing in as it is, because you are not busy extracting something from it.
The coolness doctrine says the same thing and makes it thermal and physical. You cannot receive while hot. Receptivity has a temperature.
The insight the pairing produces is about what to do about it, and here the older framework is more practical. Maslow's account is largely developmental and hierarchical — deficiency needs get met, and then a different mode of perceiving becomes available. It's a long-run story about a person's condition.
The coolness account is short-run and operational. It says the state is producible on demand: retain water, release heat through sound and tears, enter the cool condition, and receive. The proverb about counsellors is precisely about that — the reign is peaceful when the king can be counselled, and being counsellable is a state you enter rather than a stage you reach.
Which suggests the two are compatible and answer different questions. One tells you why some people can rarely receive. The other tells you how anyone gets there this afternoon.
Sharpest implication. Two unrelated roots in the same language attach coolness to generation, and one of them is thermally correct. Whatever the deity claim is worth, the language of this tradition encodes a real physiological fact about fertility that Europe did not write down until it had thermometers.
