Find a diagram of the pharynx — the passage behind your mouth and nose, running down toward the larynx.
Nasopharynx at the top, oropharynx in the middle, laryngopharynx narrowing at the bottom.
It tapers. It has a broad head and a narrowing tail.
It looks like a fish, and the goddess assigned to it wears one on her head.1
Hat — the fore-part. The head, the chest and forelegs of a lion, which is the glyph. And by extension: first, foremost, the front, the beginning, the advance guard of an army, a chief.2
Mehit — and this one carries a lot.
North, the Northland, the Delta.3 Flood, water-flood, rainstorm, a mass of water.4 Fish.5 And from the related meh: to fill, to fill full, to be occupied with.6 And as mehu: tribe, clan, family.7
So her name reads foremost of the fish — and the same word means north, flood, filling, and kin.
The corpus works the geography first and it's the clean part.
Look at a map. The Nile runs south to north as a single channel, and then in the north it fans out into many streams. The Delta.8
And the land there was made by the flood — silt carried from the south, deposited year after year, filling in what had been underwater until it became a well-watered land.9
So in the north, the water fills. Mehit meaning north and meh meaning to fill are the same fact about the same place.
Fish follow from the water. Family follows from... less obviously, and the corpus doesn't quite argue it — but a mehu, a clan, is a group that fills a place, and the fish-as-people reading it uses elsewhere makes the connection through the school.10
Her abode in the body is the pharynx and nasal cavity.11
And the corpus's reasons are functional rather than only shape-based, which matters.

The pharynx is that arrangement in a person. It is where sound is shaped going out and where the channel to the inner ear opens coming in.

Which is why the corpus lands the divinity here rather than at the larynx. The larynx only speaks. The pharynx speaks and listens, and a synchronising organ has to do both.
The practical claim follows and it's checkable against ordinary experience.
Someone pours libation and speaks a ritual prayer, and the crowd aligns.17 Someone starts a song and everyone finds the same key and rhythm without being told.18
That is not metaphor. It is a room full of people whose pharynges are shaping and receiving the same sound, and coordinating on it faster than instruction could manage.
The corpus's summary: those sound vibrations begin to align the entire crowd.19
And the reverse experience — being in a dark room, hearing a sound, and moving toward it — is the same channel used for navigation rather than coordination.20

Whether that's what's happening is unproven. That something is happening below content is not.
Test the siting by asking what the obvious alternative would have been.
The obvious alternative. The larynx. It's the voice box. If you want a divinity of sound, that's where you put her.
Why the corpus doesn't. Two reasons, one stated and one implied.
Stated: the pharynx does more. It handles digestion, respiration, hearing and phonation.23 The larynx is specialised; the pharynx is a junction.
Implied and stronger: the larynx is output only. A divinity whose function is synchronising a group needs a structure that both emits and receives, because synchrony requires feedback. You cannot align to something you cannot hear.
And the auditory tube is the detail that seals it. The Eustachian tube opens into the pharynx and connects to the middle ear — so the same cavity that shapes outgoing sound is directly connected to the apparatus that receives it.24
That's an anatomical fact, it's the reason your own voice sounds different to you than to others, and it makes the pharynx a genuine two-way sound structure.
Why this is a good instance of the method. The siting was constrained by the function required. Foremost of the fish means leading a group that moves as one, which requires bidirectional sound, which rules out the larynx.
The name specified the function, and the function selected the organ over a more obvious candidate.

Strongest support. The pharynx genuinely is a two-way sound structure with the auditory tube opening into it, and the shape genuinely does taper. Both halves of the identification have independent support.
The tension. Fish-shaped is doing real work in the argument and a great many things are fish-shaped. The shape claim is the weak half; the function claim is the strong one.
A second. The corpus's account of fish schooling — neural pathways sensing vibrations through water — is roughly right but incomplete. Lateral-line organs sense water displacement, and vision matters as much. Sound is not the whole mechanism.
Open. Does any Kemetic material connect Hatmehit to speech, hearing or ritual sound? Her attested associations are the fish, the Delta and the inundation. If nothing links her to phonation, the siting is entirely the teacher's.
Against What She Wears Is Where She Is, this is a case where the image and the name converge, which that page argues is what a strong reading looks like.
The fish on the head points at the region. The word mehit independently means fish. And the function claim about phonation comes from neither — it comes from what the organ does.
Three channels, and only two of them are the corpus's usual ones. That's a better-supported siting than the ones resting on iconography alone.

Whether the mechanism is right, the pairing is the corpus at its most systematic — practice and anatomy proposed as one thing.
