You're sitting in the airport waiting for a delayed flight. There's a couple at the next table arguing quietly about whether to upgrade their vacation rental. Pull a sticky note out of your laptop bag. Draw a plus sign. In the four cells, write four abbreviations: Br (blink rate), Lp (lip movement), Df (digital flexion), Nds (needs).
For the next ten minutes, watch the couple. Don't try to read everything. Just those four behaviors. As soon as you spot one, mark it. When you can identify what triggered it, circle the mark.
By the time they finish their conversation, you have a coffee-stained sticky note that contains a coarse psychological profile of two strangers. You know their default blink rates. You know which topics produced lip compression. You know whose hands curled when (and to what). You know each of their primary needs.
That's the Quadrant. Four cells. Sticky-note-sized. Designed for the operator who has too much to track and not enough perceptual bandwidth to track it all.
When you graduate from the Quadrant, you graduate to the Behavior Compass. The Compass is the full circular profile — Decision Map, Handedness, Sensory Preference, Pronouns, Locus of Control, Needs, GHT direction, plus an internal Quadrant for nonverbal observations. Six minutes of conversation, end-to-end, fills the entire Compass. The skilled operator runs both tools simultaneously: Quadrant for live observation, Compass for integrated profile.
This page is about how the two tools work together — and why the most important tool isn't the one you'd think.1
The 6MX system has three operationally distinct artifacts, easily confused:
Three tools, three roles. The BTE is the dictionary. The Quadrant is the scratch pad. The Compass is the dossier.
Hughes built the Quadrant to solve a specific problem: the 6MX system produces too many behavioral indicators for any operator to track simultaneously. Eye cluster (7 behaviors). Face cluster (6 behaviors). Body cluster (12+ behaviors). Verbal deception cluster (14+ indicators). Plus the Needs Map, the Decision Map, and three layers of linguistic harvesting. Total trackable indicators: roughly 50+ in a single conversation.
The operator running 50+ indicators in parallel during conversation while also maintaining content engagement, planning the pitch, and reading the target's real-time responses to their own speech — that's not a skill any human can develop in their first year of training. The Quadrant solves it.1
The discipline: track only four indicators at a time. Choose the four behaviors most relevant to the current goal. Assign each to one quadrant of a sticky-note-sized plus sign. Run those four for the whole conversation. Once they become automatic, swap one out for a new one.
Hughes catalogs thirteen possible elements that can fill the four quadrant slots:

The four-element constraint is operational, not architectural. The Quadrant could in theory hold all thirteen — Hughes notes that the constraint is for training purposes, not because four is the actual maximum bandwidth.
Every Quadrant session opens with the Initial Observation — the operator's read of the target's resting/baseline behavior across the four chosen elements. The IO becomes the comparison point for everything that follows.
A typical session:
The circle convention is the discipline that distinguishes skilled use from sloppy use. Marking a behavior just shows it occurred. Circling it shows the operator identified the cause. The Quadrant tracks not just what happened but what the operator was paying enough attention to understand. Over time, the ratio of circles to marks reveals the operator's growth.
As behaviors become automatic — the operator can spot them without effort — they get rotated out of the Quadrant and replaced with new ones. A typical rotation curve over 25 weeks:
By Week 25, the Quadrant becomes optional. The operator either runs it on a sticky note for habit's sake or in their head if the situation requires more discretion.
The Compass is the artifact that replaces the Quadrant once skill is established. Where the Quadrant tracks four behaviors over time, the Compass holds the full profile of one specific target — everything you've learned about them across all 6MX dimensions.
A complete Behavior Compass holds:
Plus the operator's notes on hidden fears (cross-referenced from Needs Map), positive and negative adjectives harvested from the conversation, topics that produced specific behavioral changes, and any deception indicators surfaced.
Hughes' explicit claim: a skilled operator can fill the entire Compass within six minutes. Initial trainees may take fifteen minutes; the curriculum is designed to bring fill-time down with practice.1
The six-minute target isn't arbitrary — it's the time-pressure constraint that distinguishes the 6MX from leisurely behavioral profiling. Most operationally important encounters (sales calls, interrogations, jury selection meetings, dating first impressions, intelligence-asset recruitments) happen in compressed time windows. Profiling that takes thirty minutes is useless when the conversation is ten minutes long. The 6MX is calibrated for the actual time-pressure of operational reality.
Every chapter of Six-Minute X-Ray ends with a "Compass Notes" section specifying the abbreviation system for that chapter's behavior. The system is designed to be non-decodable by anyone observing the operator's notes:
The non-decodability is operationally important. A target who saw "Lc - credit score, Hu @ medications, Ss when pricing came up" in clear text would immediately understand they were being profiled. The abbreviation system lets the operator keep visible records without exposing the operation.
Like the Quadrant, the Compass uses the circle convention: any mark gets circled when the operator identifies the conversational cause of that behavior. An uncircled mark means "I observed this happen but couldn't pin down what triggered it." A circled mark means "I observed this happen and identified the topic." The ratio of circles to marks across many Compasses tracks the operator's developing skill.
In a single conversation:
Pre-encounter. Pull up the BTE on your phone (the taxonomy reference). Draw a fresh Quadrant on a sticky note (the live workspace). Open a Compass page in your notebook (the integrated output document).
First minute. Run the Quadrant: IO observations on the four chosen elements. Cross-reference any unfamiliar behaviors against the BTE if needed. Begin filling the Compass with anything you can identify quickly (handedness, dominant shoulder, default sensory mode).
Minutes 2-4. Quadrant catches behavioral changes in real time. Compass accumulates the integrated read — Decision Map pillar identification, Needs Map identification, sensory preference confirmation, pronoun pattern, GHT direction.
Minutes 5-6. Quadrant should be largely populated; Compass should be reaching completion. Final read of LOC and adjective inventory.
Post-encounter. Quadrant gets transferred to the Compass — the four nonverbal observations integrate into the larger profile. Compass goes into long-term storage for future reference. BTE goes back into the phone for next session.
The three tools serve different memory horizons. The BTE persists across all targets and sessions (it never changes). The Compass persists per-target across multiple sessions (it accumulates). The Quadrant is disposable — it lives only for this conversation.1
Session prep. Choose the four elements for this Quadrant based on the conversation type. Sales conversation: probably Lips + Digital Flexion + Needs + Decision Map. Interrogation: probably Blink Rate + Single-Sided Shrug + Pre-Swallow + Verbal Deception. Dating first impression: probably Eyebrow Flash + Pupil Dilation + Pronouns + Adjectives. The four elements should match what's most operationally relevant for the encounter.
IO discipline. Resist the urge to read meaning into early observations. The first minute is baseline, not diagnosis. Annotate IOs neutrally. Diagnostic reads come from comparing later behavior to IO, not from interpreting IO itself.
Track changes, not absolutes. The Quadrant convention emphasizes change — arrows up and down, transitions from one state to another. Behavior that stays at IO is neutral information; behavior that moves is diagnostic.
Circle when you can. Circling marks a successful cause-identification. Operators who never circle aren't actually using the discipline. The circle is the proof of skilled observation.
Build the Compass alongside the Quadrant. Don't wait until conversation ends to start filling the Compass. Live conversation continuously updates it — handedness identified in minute one, Decision Map pillar in minute three, primary need in minute four. The Compass should be substantially complete by the time the conversation ends.
Use the Compass for follow-up. The Compass's actual operational value emerges in subsequent encounters. "The salesperson references the customer's positive adjectives when closing because they're in the Compass." The first conversation builds the profile; the second through hundredth conversations deploy it.
Rotate Quadrant elements deliberately. Don't choose the same four elements every session. Rotation builds breadth. Hughes' 25-week training plan deliberately introduces one new element per week to force operators out of comfort zones.1
Quadrant overload. Operators who try to track all 13 elements at once produce sloppy observations and weak circle ratios. The four-element constraint exists for a reason — it's the operationally trainable maximum. Recovery: cut back to three elements; rebuild speed and accuracy; add the fourth back when the three are automatic.
Compass without Quadrant. Some operators try to skip the Quadrant scaffolding and go directly to the Compass. The Compass is harder to fill because it integrates many tracking layers simultaneously — but operators without Quadrant practice don't have those tracking layers automated yet. Recovery: build Quadrant fluency first; the Compass follows.
Notes-as-decoder failure. Some operators write Compass notes in plain English ("subject seemed nervous when I mentioned credit score"). Plain-English notes defeat the non-decodability discipline; observed targets can read them. Recovery: enforce the abbreviation system; a third party reading the notes should learn nothing about the target.
Cross-target Compass contamination. Operators with many active Compasses can confuse profiles between targets. The Mary Compass starts to bleed into the John Compass; reads from one target inform the operator's assumptions about another. Recovery: dedicated Compass per target; no cross-referencing during active observation.
Skill-level mismatch with elements. Newer operators choosing high-difficulty Quadrant elements (Pre-Swallow Movement, Shutter Speed, Dominant Shoulder Retreat) before they can reliably spot easier elements (Blink Rate, Lip Compression) produce the false impression of skill development. Recovery: skill ladder honestly; rotate up only when current elements are circled-cause more than 50% of the time.
Tool-not-system failure. The Quadrant and Compass are scaffolding for a perceptual practice. Operators who treat them as the practice itself — checking boxes, filling cells, never developing the underlying skill — produce filled Compasses without functional reads. Recovery: the goal is the perceptual capacity; the tools are training aids that should eventually be discardable.1

The 25-week training plan (Ch.18) explicitly maps Quadrant element rotation across the curriculum. Hughes provides a random-Compass-generator URL (randomcompass.herokuapp.com) for solo practice — operators can fill out generated profiles to build skill without needing live targets.1
The non-decodability claim about Compass notes ("non-decodable system for building a human behavior profile without them knowing what my notes said") is presented as Hughes' practitioner observation rather than tested security. Visual decoding of an experienced operator's Compass would require reverse-engineering the abbreviation system from observed annotations.
Three-tool architecture vs. presentation simplicity. The book sometimes blurs the BTE / Quadrant / Compass distinction in service of pedagogical clarity. Some readers will conflate them, particularly the BTE (taxonomy reference) and the Quadrant (live workspace). The conflation produces operators who think they're "running the BTE" when they're actually running a four-cell Quadrant — a much smaller subset.
Six-minute claim plausibility. The Compass-fill-in-six-minutes claim is the framework's most operationally important promise. Whether a real operator can actually fill a complete Compass in six minutes against an unfamiliar target is empirically untested. Hughes' practitioner claim is plausible for some elements (handedness, dominant sensory mode, primary need) but probably implausible for others (LOC reliable identification, secondary need confirmation, full GHT mapping) within that window. The claim is best read as aspirational target rather than guaranteed performance.
Non-decodability as security claim. The abbreviation system is non-decodable to a casual observer but trivially decodable to anyone who has read the book. The book has an indeterminate but non-trivial readership. Targets who happen to have read Six-Minute X-Ray themselves can decode the operator's notes immediately. The non-decodability assumes a public-knowledge asymmetry that erodes as the book's readership grows.
Quadrant rotation curriculum vs. real-world variability. The 25-week training plan implies a clean linear progression of skill development. Real-world skill development is messier — operators may need to revisit elements they thought were automated, may struggle with elements they expected to find easy, may discover that some elements never automate for them. The curriculum is operationally useful but methodologically idealized.
The Quadrant and Compass have direct counterparts in Hughes' BOM (2023), already integrated in the vault. The BOM mentions Behavior Compass and Quadrant Analysis but treats them differently:
BOM Behavior Compass is presented as a profile artifact alongside other operator tools (FATE Model, Six-Axis Model, PCP Model). Less procedural detail.
Correction (2026-07-12, verified against full BOM Section 05 text): the BOM's "Quadrant Analysis" passage is not merely a lighter mention of the Compass — it restates the same four-cell sticky-note system found here, nearly element-for-element: the same plus-sign diagram, the same swappable four-variable design ("does not have to have these four variables in it"), the same Initial-Observation-then-circle-the-cause protocol, and effectively the same thirteen-element catalog under the same abbreviations (Sh, Df, Lp, Ds, Nds, Dec, Br, Ss, Prn, Adj, Sns, Bl, Bar).2 This is close enough to the 6MX-sourced material above that it does not warrant a separate concept page — it's the same tool, restated by the same author in a later, shorter book, not a second technique. Filed here as a corroborating second source rather than duplicated as 6mx-quadrant-note-taking-system or similar.
6MX Behavior Compass is presented as the culmination of the entire system — the artifact every other 6MX tool feeds into. Substantially more procedural detail. The Quadrant scaffolding is essentially unique to this book.
The deeper convergence: both books share the underlying claim that fragmented behavioral indicators are operationally useless without integration into a per-target profile. The Compass exists to integrate; nothing else in either Hughes book does that role.
The split: the 6MX version is more pedagogical (designed for civilian readers who need scaffolding), while the BOM version is more operational (designed for trainees who already have practitioner foundation). The same artifact serves both populations through different presentation strategies.
With other vault frameworks: Wardley Maps, Cynefin frameworks, and certain decision-architecture tools occupy structurally similar positions in their respective domains — they're integration artifacts that synthesize fragmented indicators into navigable per-context profiles. The Compass is the 6MX-domain instance of a more general pattern: every operational discipline that requires multiple-indicator synthesis develops some kind of integration artifact. The Quadrant's four-element constraint reflects a well-documented finding in cognitive psychology: working memory has limited capacity, and skill acquisition proceeds by chunking — gradual compression of formerly-conscious operations into automatic perceptual patterns that don't consume working-memory bandwidth. George Miller's classic "magic number seven plus or minus two" formulation, and subsequent refinements showing the actual chunk capacity is closer to four for many tasks, both apply directly to the Quadrant's design.
The structural parallel: the Quadrant's four-element constraint is precisely calibrated to working-memory capacity. Four behavioral channels can be tracked consciously while leaving bandwidth for content engagement. Five overloads the system; three under-utilizes it. The rotation strategy — adding new elements only as old ones automate — operationalizes the chunking process. As individual behaviors become automatic, they no longer occupy working memory, freeing capacity for new tracking.
The connection produces an insight neither domain articulates alone: Hughes' Quadrant is essentially an applied cognitive-psychology training system disguised as a sticky note. The four-element constraint, the rotation strategy, the IO-then-changes protocol, and the circle convention all map onto established skill-acquisition principles (working memory capacity, chunking, baseline-comparison, metacognitive monitoring of comprehension). The framework's effectiveness — to the extent it works — is downstream of cognitive architecture findings the chapter doesn't engage explicitly. The Quadrant has structural correspondence to the yantra — a structured visual-meditative aid in Hindu and Buddhist tantric practice. A yantra is a geometric diagram that the practitioner uses as a focusing tool: attention is held within the yantra's structure while the underlying contemplative work happens. The yantra is not the practice; it's the container the practice happens inside.
The structural parallel: the Quadrant is functionally a yantra for behavioral observation. The four-cell structure provides containment that holds the operator's attention; the actual perceptual work happens within the structure. Both frameworks recognize that human attention requires external scaffolding to maintain consistent focus during sustained practice — and that the scaffolding eventually becomes internalized and discardable.
The deeper alignment: the yogic tradition holds that yantra practice produces specific perceptual capacities that persist after the yantra is no longer needed. A practitioner who has spent years working with a particular yantra has internalized its structure; their attention now organizes spontaneously around the patterns the yantra encoded. Hughes' framework makes the same claim about the Quadrant: by Week 25, the explicit four-cell structure becomes optional because the operator's perceptual system has internalized the discipline.
The split: the yogic tradition treats the internalization as the gateway to deeper contemplative work — the yantra discipline is preliminary practice. Hughes' framework treats the internalization as the goal — operator competence is the destination. Both traditions agree on the mechanism (structured attention practice produces persistent perceptual capacity); they disagree on what the capacity is for. The Sharpest Implication. Most adults have had thousands of conversations in their lives without keeping any structured profile of their conversational partners. Whatever they remember about anyone is whatever happened to stick — moods, opinions, anecdotes, vague impressions. The Compass framework reveals that the same conversations could have produced detailed psychological profiles persistent across years if the participants had been deliberately tracking. Imagine your last hundred meaningful conversations. The information-density present in each conversation was enormous; what you retained was a fraction of a percent. The disquieting implication isn't that operators run Compasses on you. It's that most of your own knowledge of the people you know is dramatically thinner than it could have been with deliberate practice. You've spent decades in close relationships without ever building a structured profile of your partner, your closest friend, your siblings — and the framework Hughes describes would have produced one in roughly six minutes per conversation. The choice isn't between profiling and not-profiling. It's between deliberate compression of conversational data and accidental retention of whatever happens to stick. The latter is what most relationships run on; the former is what skilled operators do. You've been making that choice unconsciously your whole life.
