One formula in this material is set in capitals, and it is the compressed statement of how the whole process behaves.
DIFFERENT TIME, DIFFERENT SECTION, DIFFERENT DETAILS, DEFINITE SEQUENCE1
Four clauses covering what varies and what does not.
And the gloss is given immediately. Different channels or sections open in a specific sequence, with specific timing, lasting a specific length of time, and with different phenomena for each.1
Which makes the formula a claim about structure rather than about content. The process is orderly; the experience of it is not uniform.
And it sits inside a larger statement about repetition. Cultivation is mental and physical refinement recurring at progressively higher degrees of purification — many stages of purification, countless times, over many years.1 Taoism's "multiple refinings."1 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY on the term.
Which is why the formula needs four clauses rather than one. A process that repeats at different depths would otherwise be unrecognisable each time it came round. The formula tells a practitioner which features to expect to change and which to expect to hold. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE] 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.
Taken separately, the clauses do different jobs, and only one of them is a strong claim.
Different time. Each opening has its own timing and its own duration.1 Which forecloses any expectation of a regular rhythm — the intervals are not comparable across stages.
Different section. Different channels or regions open at different points. The work moves. A practitioner attending to where something last happened is attending to a finished site.
Different details. Different phenomena for each.1 Which is the clause that does the most practical work, and the next section takes it on its own.
Definite sequence. The order is fixed.1 This is the only clause that constrains anything — the other three say expect variation, and this one says the variation runs in one order.
Which is worth noticing about the formula's shape. Three permissions and one constraint. The permissions absorb almost any experience — different timing, different location, different phenomena — and the constraint is what could be violated.
And the constraint is the practically useful half. Nothing can be skipped, and nothing arrives early. See The Twelve Labors as a Gong-Fu Sequence.
The third clause is the one a practitioner will actually use, because it addresses the most common source of confusion in this material.
Different phenomena for each section.1 Which means the sensation catalogue is not a checklist.
A practitioner who felt heat at one opening and expects heat at the next has misread the process. The next section produces what the next section produces, and the account explicitly says these differ.
And it is stated in a more forgiving form elsewhere. "Each body will react to this purification in a different way, but also according to a common general pattern."5
Both halves matter and they pull against each other. Individual variation is granted; a common pattern is asserted. Which is the only position that keeps the framework usable — entirely idiosyncratic phenomena would make the stage descriptions worthless, and entirely uniform ones would be contradicted by any two practitioners comparing notes.
And the same latitude is applied to the decode itself. The varying hydra head count is treated as unimportant, because many schools emphasise different chakras.6 The number is not the claim; the multiplicity is.
Which is the clause's real function. It is what allows the framework to absorb disagreement between traditions and between practitioners without abandoning the sequence. A useful move, and one that also makes the framework very hard to contradict on any particular.
The tension between individual variation and general pattern is where this formula earns or loses its keep, and it is worth stating precisely.
The claim is that two practitioners at the same stage will report different phenomena and be at the same stage.15
Which is coherent. It is also the structure that makes stage-identification by phenomenon impossible in principle — if the details differ, the details cannot locate you.
And that leaves the sequence as the only usable landmark. Not what am I feeling but what has already happened, and in what order. A practitioner's position is established by their history, not by their current sensation.
Which is a genuinely different way to read one's own practice, and it is the most portable thing on this page. The question stops being is this the sign and becomes what came before this.
And it has one hard anchor in the anatomy. The full microcosmic and macrocosmic circulations can only be initiated once the foot channels open.7 A dependency that cannot be reordered — which is what a definite sequence looks like when it is stated concretely rather than as a formula.
That single dependency does more work than the capitals do. It is checkable, it constrains, and it makes a prediction that could fail. See The Regions That Resist.
The formula's constraint clause is the one that can be tested, and the account tests it against itself without noticing.
The sushumna's opening is given three different placements in this material.
One. The hydraulic route — front and back channels, then left and right, then the centre opens as a consequence of the side channels' inflow.
Two. "Most spiritual practitioners first open the central sushumna channel of the body through emptiness meditation."4 First.
Three. The Augean Stables placement, where the central channel's clearing is a specific labour arriving well into the sequence.
Which is three orderings for one event, and definite sequence is the clause that forbids exactly this.
The reconciliation available, and it is not stated by the account: different routes have different orderings, and the sequence is definite within a route rather than across routes. Which would make the formula a claim about a given path, not about cultivation as such — a considerably weaker statement than the capitals imply.
And the account's own hedging supports that reading. The individual identifications are disclaimed while the general sequence of gong-fu events is retained.3 The retained thing is a general sequence, not this specific one.
Which is the honest verdict. The formula's three permissive clauses are unfalsifiable by construction, and its one constraining clause is contradicted within the same book. What survives is the practical instruction — expect variation in timing, place and phenomena; expect the order to be fixed for whatever road you are actually on — and that is worth having, at a much lower confidence than capital letters suggest.
1. Stop matching your experience against other people's phenomena. Different details for each section and each body.15 A mismatch is predicted, not diagnostic.
2. Locate yourself by history, not by sensation. What has already happened, in what order — the only landmark the formula leaves usable.
3. Do not expect a rhythm. Each opening has its own timing and duration.1 Regular intervals are not part of the claim.
4. Do not treat a finished region as the site of the next event. The work moves sections.1
5. Use the formula against discouragement, which is its stated purpose. Knowing about these things so that you are "not confused and think you are retrogressing when such things occur" — the stages are temporary, and the knowing itself helps one through.2
6. Do not treat the count of anything as load-bearing. Hydra heads vary because schools emphasise different chakras.6 Numbers in the decodes are not data.
7. Take the anchored dependency seriously where one exists. Foot channels before the full circulations7 — a concrete ordering claim, worth more than the formula it illustrates.
8. Benchmark across traditions rather than within one. Spiritual gong-fu is described as entirely non-denominational, with knowledge to be sought from whatever source is available;9 "benchmarking is the name of the game."9
The formula is deployed against one specific error, and naming the error is the reason the passage exists.
"You are certainly not done... just because you were previously able to stimulate a little yang chi into rising."1
Certainly not done — and the thing being corrected is a reasonable inference. Something unmistakable happened; the practitioner concluded the process had occurred.
And the formula is the correction. Many stages of purification, countless times over many years.1 One event is one event in one section at one depth.
Which is why the repetition claim and the sequence claim belong in the same passage. The sequence says the order is fixed; the repetition says the order runs again, deeper. Together they say: what you experienced was real, was placed, and was one instance.
And the practical consequence is a reading rule for one's own history. A striking event is evidence that the process is running. It is not evidence about how far it has run.
Which is the same structure that appears everywhere in this material — the layer beneath the layer, the round after the round — and this formula is its compressed statement. See The Alternation Engine.
The formula's scope is stated as universal, and the universality is what makes the benchmarking advice follow.
The same gong-fu happens to everyone, whether or not a school describes it.8 Zen does not record the low-level physical stages8 — which is presented as a fact about Zen's records, not about Zen practitioners.
Which means a tradition's silence is not evidence of absence, and equally not evidence of anything at all. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE on the Zen claim.
And the practical instruction that follows is the most useful thing in this passage-set. Spiritual gong-fu is entirely non-denominational. Seek knowledge from whatever source is available. "Benchmarking is the name of the game." If your tradition is barren, take the best practices from somewhere else. Start with practices that have produced the most success stories rather than exotic ones.9
Most success stories rather than exotic ones is the operative selection rule, and it is the opposite of how methods are usually chosen — by rarity, by lineage, by aesthetic fit.
Which connects the formula to a decision a practitioner actually makes. If the sequence belongs to nobody, then a description of it drawn from any tradition can be used to read an experience produced by any other — and the only reason to prefer one description is that it is better, not that it is yours. See People Won't Use a Method That Isn't Theirs.
🚩 SINGLE SOURCE [PRACTITIONER SOURCE] — the formula, its gloss and the universality claim come from one account.
🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — "multiple refinings" attributed to Taoism without a text;1 the Zen non-recording claim asserted without sources.8
Tension within the subject. Definite sequence1 and three different orderings for the sushumna's opening4 cannot both stand as given. The route-relative reading offered above is the vault's, not the source's.
Tension in the formula's shape. Three clauses permit variation in timing, location and phenomena, which makes almost any report consistent with the framework. The unfalsifiability is structural rather than incidental.
Open question. No criterion is given for distinguishing different details at the same stage from a different stage.5 Without one, the common general pattern cannot be identified in any particular case — including by the practitioner having it.
Convergent: the repetition claim is stated identically wherever it appears, and the purpose of the formula — preventing the I am retrogressing misreading — is consistent throughout.12
Divergent: a definite sequence is asserted in capitals, and the individual identifications are elsewhere disclaimed while only the general sequence is retained.3 Both preserved. See Don't Be Wed to My Interpretations.
Benchmarking Is the Name of the Game — the behavioral-mechanics case treats benchmarking as a discipline: locate who is producing the outcome you want, adopt what they do, and let results rather than affiliation decide. This formula supplies the precondition that makes benchmarking legitimate here rather than merely appealing, and the pairing exposes what the tactical version usually assumes without stating. Benchmarking requires that the thing being measured is the same thing across the compared parties — otherwise the borrowed practice addresses a different problem. The universality claim is exactly that warrant: the same gong-fu happens to everyone, whether or not a school records it.8 The insight neither domain supplies alone: benchmarking's real bottleneck is not finding the best performer but establishing that you and they are running the same process — and in a domain where the details differ by body and by section,5 that establishment is precisely what cannot be done from the outputs. Which is why the account's selection rule falls back on success stories rather than exotic contents:9 when you cannot verify the process, frequency of outcome is the only signal left.
The formula is memorable, compressed and mostly unfalsifiable — three clauses that permit anything and one that forbids something, with the forbidding clause contradicted inside the same book.4
The live edge is the missing criterion. Nothing distinguishes the same stage presenting differently from a different stage.5 Without it, the common general pattern is asserted and unlocatable, and two practitioners comparing notes have no way to establish whether they are at the same point. A single stated invariant — one thing that must be present at a given stage regardless of body — would convert this from a reassurance into a diagnostic, and the anatomy already contains a candidate in the foot-channel dependency.7
