The Śūraṅgama Sūtra does something most scriptures don't: it runs a survey. Twenty-five Bodhisattvas and Arhats are asked, one after another, how they got there. Some report cultivating through the elements — fire, water, earth. Some through the sense organs. Some through the sense consciousnesses.1 Twenty-five different doors, all of which worked.
Then Shakyamuni turns to Mañjuśrī and asks him to assess all of them and name the best one for humans.2 Mañjuśrī picks hearing.
That's an unusual structure for a religious text. It doesn't assert one method and ignore the rest; it collects twenty-five, grants that each succeeded, and then makes a comparative recommendation on stated grounds. And it answers a question worth asking. Given how our senses are weighted, is there a type of cultivation best suited to humans — one that leans on whichever sense consciousness happens to be strongest here?1 The survey turns out to settle it.
Mañjuśrī sets the six side by side and compares them on one property — how far each one reaches:
The eyes cannot pierce a screen, But neither can mouth nor nose, Body only feels when it is touched. Mind's thoughts are confused and unconnected, (But) voice whether near or far At all times can be heard. The five other organs are not perfect, But hearing really is pervasive.2
Each clause knocks out a different sense on a different ground. Put a screen up and sight stops at it; so does smell, mostly, and taste entirely. The body only feels when it's touched, which means it has no range at all — its coverage is exactly the surface of you. And thought is unreliable in a way none of the others are, because the sixth consciousness is the one faculty that can produce content with no relation to anything present at all.
Hearing has range, and it has no direction. Voice near or far, at all times, and it doesn't need aiming. You can't look behind you without turning. You hear behind you without doing anything.
The opening image makes the same point from the other side: "When one dwells in quietude, / Rolls of drums from the ten directions / Simultaneously are heard, / So hearing is complete and perfect."2 Ten drums, ten directions, all at once. No other sense takes ten simultaneous inputs from every direction and keeps them distinct.
Then the verse does something much harder, and this is the part worth the page:
The presence or absence of sound and voice Is registered by ear as 'is' or 'is not'. Absence of sound means nothing is heard, Not hearing devoid of nature. Absence of sound is not the end of hearing, And sound when present is not its beginning. The faculty of hearing, beyond creation And annihilation, truly is permanent.2
When a room goes quiet, you don't stop hearing — you hear silence. The absence registers as an absence, which means something was there to register it.
That's the distinction the whole recommendation rests on: the object comes and goes, the faculty doesn't. Sound starting isn't hearing starting. Sound stopping isn't hearing stopping. So hearing is the sense whose operation is most easily separated, in ordinary experience, from whatever it happens to be operating on.
And then the sleep argument, which is the empirical clincher:
Even when isolated thoughts in a dream arise, Though the thinking process stops, hearing does not end, For the faculty of hearing is beyond All thought, beyond both mind and body.2
Thinking stops in sleep. Hearing doesn't — which is why a sound wakes you. The faculty runs when the discriminating mind is offline, which is precisely the condition the whole path is trying to produce deliberately.
So the recommendation isn't hearing is the nicest sense. It's that hearing is the one faculty you already have that demonstrably runs without the sixth consciousness. And the practice is to turn it around: "Ananda and all you who listen here / Should inward turn your faculty / Of hearing to hear your own nature."2
The method has a worked example and it's unusually procedural. Avalokiteśvara reports the sequence:
At first by directing the organ of hearing into the stream of meditation, this organ was detached from its object, and by wiping out (the concept of) both sound and stream-entry, both disturbance and stillness became clearly non-existent. Thus advancing step by step both hearing and its object ceased completely, but I did not stop where they ended. When the awareness of this state and this state itself were realized as non-existent, both subject and object merged into the void, the awareness of which became all-embracing. With further elimination of the void and its object both creation and annihilation vanished giving way to the state of Nirvana which then manifested.3
That's six moves, and each one dissolves the pair the previous move created.
The structure is a repeated refusal to rest on the last thing achieved, and the fourth step is the hinge. Cessation of hearing and its object would be, by most accounts, the goal — and it's flagged as a place people stop.
Which is exactly the failure the vault carries at Cessation Tops Out at the First Dhyana, named here from inside the practice rather than diagnosed from outside. Samantabhadra's briefer report points the same way: "the best consists in hearing with the mind, which leads to non-discriminative discernment."4 Not with the ear. The organ is the entry, not the operation.
A structural claim sits underneath the recommendation and it justifies picking any one door at all:
[Humans have] the six organs, Derived from one alaya Which divides into six unions. If one of these returns to source, All six functions are ended.2
Six faculties, one root. So you don't have to work through all of them — resolve one and the rest resolve with it. That's the argument for why a recommendation is even coherent: if the six were independent, picking the best would only get you a sixth of the way.
And the honest tail: "Any defiling remnant requires further study / Whereas full enlightenment is the Tathagata."2 Partial completion is expected and named.
That also settles what the twenty-five reports were. If any single gate returning to source ends all six, then twenty-four of the twenty-five methods aren't wrong — they're slower for a human, given how our senses are weighted. Mañjuśrī isn't correcting anyone. He's making a species-specific efficiency call.
The verse answers the obvious objection, and the answer is more exclusive than the survey format suggests:
It is best to contemplate on worldly sound: All other methods are expedients Used by Buddha in particular cases To keep disciples from occasional trouble. They are not good for indiscriminate practice By men of different types.6
So the twenty-four aren't twenty-four valid alternatives. They're case-specific fixes — prescribed to particular people for particular difficulties — and the verse says explicitly that they should not be handed out generally.
That inverts what a modern reader expects from a survey. You'd assume the collection of twenty-five methods was there to offer choice. It's the reverse: the twenty-five are on the record so that the one can be distinguished from them.
And the universality claim is pushed as far as it goes:
Buddhas as many as the Ganges' sand Entered this one gateway to Nirvana. All past Tathagatas Have achieved this method. All Bodhisattvas now Enter this perfection. All who practise in the future On this Dharma should rely.6
Past, present and future. Mañjuśrī even adds that Avalokiteśvara "did not practise it alone, because through it I also passed."6
Then Bodri adds something the sutra doesn't say, and flags it as his own:
What they didn't say is that the second best cultivation method in our human realm is to cultivate the sense of smell because of chi, or the wind element. This is why cultivating the breath is a popular and effective meditation technique.7
Two things about that. It's honestly marked as an addition — what they didn't say — which is more than most of the book's extensions get. And it quietly resolves the rivalry between hearing and breath by ranking them: hearing first, breath second, with breath reclassified as a smell-gate practice on the grounds that both run on the wind element.
That reclassification carries a lot and isn't obviously right. Breath practice attends to sensation and movement at least as much as to odour, and the traditions that teach it rarely route it through the nose as a sense organ. The link being made is elemental — breath and smell share the wind element — rather than sensory. Hold it as an inference laid over the sutra rather than as the sutra's own.
The context Bodri wraps this in is the reason the question arises at all. Beings elsewhere don't necessarily use sound. The Laṅkāvatāra passage he quotes: "In some Buddha-lands ideas are indicated by looking steadily, in others by gestures, in still others by a frown, by the movement of the eyes, by laughing, by yawning, or by the clearing of the throat, or by recollection, or by trembling."5 Words are "an artificial creation," not a universal.
And the mechanism: "the relative predominance of one of their six sense consciousnesses due to their development in that realm. In a gesture realm, the touch consciousness will be more developed than in our own realm."1
So the framework predicts that the best gate is local. Hearing is best for humans because of how humans are weighted; a gesture-realm being would presumably get a different recommendation. Which is a considerably more modest and more interesting claim than "hearing is the highest sense."
One item here doesn't survive as evidence. Bodri writes: "my teacher once showed me a realm of blue skinned human inhabitants with black stripes who only communicated through gestures, just as Buddha stated."1 No circumstances, no date, no method, and the "just as Buddha stated" makes it confirmation of a prediction the observer already held. Recorded, not carried — and it sits in the book's pattern of one-clause first-person testimony offered without any of the surrounding detail that would let a reader do anything with it.
You want to try the actual instruction, which isn't "listen carefully." Sit somewhere with ordinary background noise — traffic, a fridge, a room with people two walls away. Don't seek quiet; quiet makes this harder, not easier.
First minute. Let the sounds arrive. Don't identify them. The moment you name car, you've handed it to the thinking mind and you're now listening to a word. When you notice you've named something, that's fine — just come back to the sound as sound.
Second and third minutes. You're receiving from every direction at once and doing nothing to aim. Behind you, above, both sides. There's no version of this with vision. Sit in the omnidirectionality for a bit; it's the plainest available demonstration of the pervasiveness claim.
Fourth minute — the actual instruction. Stop attending to the sounds and attend to the hearing. Not what's arriving. The fact that receiving is happening.
Almost nobody gets this on the first attempt and the failure is informative: what you'll usually find is that you've just started listening for a quieter sound. That's still the object. What you're after is the capacity itself, and it has no location and no content, so it slides off.
Fifth minute — the test. Wait for a gap. Traffic pauses, the fridge cuts out, there's a second of relative nothing.
You didn't stop hearing. The silence arrived as something you received. That's the whole of the verse — absence of sound is not the end of hearing — and you can check it in about a second, which makes it one of the very few claims in this literature you can test on a Tuesday without believing anything first.
Do that once a day for a fortnight. The fourth minute gets slightly easier. Nothing dramatic happens, and that's not a failure — the practice's whole proposition is that the faculty was already running and the only change is whether you've noticed it.
The strongest content is the survives-its-object argument, because it's checkable in ordinary experience: silence registers as silence, and a sound wakes a sleeper whose thinking has stopped.2 Both observations are available to anyone, require no attainment, and support exactly the claim they're offered for.
The central tension is that the recommendation is species-relative by the framework's own logic — best for humans, given how humans are weighted — while the verse's language is absolute: "The five other organs are not perfect, but hearing really is pervasive."2 If sense predominance varies by realm, then perfection isn't a property of hearing; it's a property of the fit between hearing and us.
A second tension is sharper than it first looks. The verse does say what happens to the other twenty-four — they're "expedients used by Buddha in particular cases," explicitly "not good for indiscriminate practice by men of different types."6 So the survey format isn't offering choice; it's establishing a contrast. But that sits badly with the framework's own mechanism, since if sense predominance is set by development, men of different types is exactly the category the verse is dismissing.
A third, on evidence: the blue-skinned striped realm shown by his teacher is offered as confirmation of a prediction the observer already held, with no circumstances of any kind.1 [LOW CONFIDENCE], not carried.
Open question: everything rests on one testable point — hearing continues when thinking stops — and sensory processing during sleep has an actual literature. Auditory processing does continue in sleep, and it's also gated, which the verse doesn't allow for. Does the gating undermine the argument, or is a gated-but-running faculty exactly what the verse describes?
Bodri's framing and the sutra's answer are aimed at different questions and he doesn't mark the switch. His question is comparative and physiological: given that different realms weight different sense consciousnesses, is there a cultivation "best suited for humans" because of "the relative predominance or special efficiency that this particular sense consciousness provides"?1 That's a question about human sensory architecture.
Mañjuśrī's answer is mostly about the structure of the faculty — that hearing separates cleanly from its object and runs without the discriminating mind. Those properties aren't claims about human weighting; they'd be true of hearing anywhere it exists. The one clause that does answer Bodri's question is "the five other organs are not perfect," and it's the least supported line in the verse.
Against The Sixteen Steps of Full Awareness of Breathing, this is a rival recommendation from the same corpus — and Bodri resolves the rivalry himself by ranking breath second, on the grounds that breath and smell share the wind element.7 Worth noting what the ranking costs breath, because breath has an advantage the verse's criteria don't measure: it's voluntary as well as automatic, so it can be used as a lever rather than only as an object. Hearing's advantage is that it doesn't stop. Those are different virtues and the ranking treats only one of them as decisive.
Against The Five Skandhas as Experiential Barriers, Avalokiteśvara's six-step ladder is a skandha traverse described from inside the doing of it — object, then the pair-structures, then awareness of the state, then the void itself. The scheme's own vocabulary would call this passing through form, sensation, conception and volition; the report doesn't use any of it, which is what makes it usable.
The vault's page on Watchers/Listeners/Touchers: Sensory Mode Classification and Tactical Matching holds that people process reality through a dominant sensory channel, that the channel is detectable from their language and behaviour, and that an operator who matches it gets through while one who doesn't gets resistance. The same words, sent down the wrong channel, simply don't land. Set that against Mañjuśrī's recommendation and the two frameworks agree on the premise and split on the unit.
Both say the sensory channel isn't incidental to what reaches a mind — it's the condition of anything reaching it. Both say there are dominant channels and that the dominance has consequences. And the sutra's own framing makes the point at cosmic scale: gesture realms, smell realms, realms where meaning arrives by yawning or trembling.
The split is that the sutra ranks by species and the tactical page ranks by individual. Mañjuśrī picks one gate for all humans. The classification says humans divide into watchers, listeners and touchers, and that handing a watcher an auditory method is precisely the mismatch that produces resistance.
Neither page says this on its own: the sutra's own mechanism supports the finer grain, and it stops short of using it. Its stated mechanism is relative predominance of a sense consciousness due to development — and nothing in that mechanism requires the predominance to be uniform within a realm. If development sets the weighting, then within a species you would expect variance, because development varies. The framework predicts watchers and touchers; it just never looks below the species line.
Which turns a doctrinal recommendation into a testable one. If Mañjuśrī is right absolutely, auditory-gate practices should outperform for everyone. If the finer grain is right, they should outperform on average and underperform for a substantial minority — and the tradition, having twenty-five methods on file, would be better served by matching than by recommending.
Run it the other way and the tactical page inherits something it lacks: an account of why one channel might be structurally privileged rather than merely preferred. Absence of sound is not the end of hearing is about the faculty, not about the person, and no preference-matching framework has an equivalent — a reason to think some channels are better at all, independent of who is receiving.

Sharpest implication: the recommendation rests on hearing being the one faculty whose operation is separable, in ordinary waking experience, from its object — silence is received rather than merely absent, and the faculty runs through sleep when thinking doesn't. That makes hearing the only sense that gives an untrained person direct access to the distinction the whole path depends on: between what's arriving and the capacity that receives it.
