Koshas, Skandhas and Elements as One Ladder

Three Lists That Turn Out to Be One

Three traditions each enumerate five things, and the claim here is that they are enumerating the same five.

The Vedantic five koshas. The Buddhist five skandhas. The Taoist five elements.1 Mapped rung for rung.

The first pairing sets the pattern. The annamaya kosha is the physical body and the densest chi in the universe — matter as condensed energy — and it corresponds to the form skandha.1

Matter as condensed energy is the move that makes the whole mapping possible. If the physical body is chi at maximum density, then a list of bodies and a list of experiential aggregates can be the same list, read at different resolutions.

And the second rung follows the same logic. The pranamaya kosha is the inner chi body, corresponding to the sensation skandha.1 A body of energy, and the aggregate through which energy is felt.

Which is the structure being proposed: each kosha is a layer of chi, and each skandha is what that layer produces in experience. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY on the mapping — no Vedantic or Abhidharma source is cited for any correspondence.

The skandhas' own definition is given alongside: heaps clung to in forming the sense of a self.1 Which matters for the ladder's direction — the rungs are not achievements, they are what a person is currently made of.

The Rungs Are Densities

The organising principle is stated once and it does all the work.

The koshas are progressively purified layers of chi.2

Which converts a list of bodies into a gradient. Not five separate things — one thing at five densities, from the physical body at maximum condensation upward.

And the third rung is given the same treatment. The manamaya kosha is the mental body, matched to the conception skandha.2 Thought as a density of chi, less condensed than sensation, more than what lies above it.

Which produces the framework's most useful structural claim: the sequence is not optional and not reorderable. A denser layer cannot be skipped, because the finer one is made of the same material at a further stage of refinement.

And it explains why the physical work comes first in this account. Not because the body matters mostbecause it is the densest thing, and refinement proceeds by density.

The correspondence is then stated in operational terms elsewhere: breaking through a skandha is also purifying a layer of chi; Taoism calls the same event a transformation of one essence into another.4 One event, three vocabularies. See Two Vocabularies, One Lever.

Where Most People Stop

The ladder comes with a distribution attached, and the distribution is the most practically useful thing on the page.

The pranamaya kosha — the inner chi body — is the one most people mean by spiritual matters, "because few practitioners are able to progress past the stages of spiritual cultivation dealing with chi in the body."2

Rung two. Out of five. Which is where the traffic is.

And it explains an enormous amount about the shape of contemporary practice. Energy work, chakras, kundalini, subtle-body anatomy, breath and chithe whole vocabulary that dominates the field is the vocabulary of one rung, and it is the second one.

Which is not offered as a criticism of the rung. The sensation skandha is a real layer and working it is real work. The claim is about where the population sits, not about whether the work is legitimate.

And it gives the practitioner a specific diagnostic. If everything you can describe about your practice is in the vocabulary of energy and sensation, the framework says you are at rung twowhich is unremarkable, expected, and not the end.

The reason given for the pile-up is not stated directly, and one is available from the structure: rung two is the first rung that produces unmistakable phenomena. Rung one is the ordinary body. Rung three and above produce nothing dramatic. The traffic gathers where the feedback is. [SPECULATIVE] — the inference is the vault's.

The Taoist Third Column

The Taoist list is mapped in less detail than the other two, and the one correspondence given is the important one.

The five elements are named alongside the transformation of jing into chi.1

Which is the Taoist column's distinctive contribution. The Vedantic and Buddhist lists name layers; the Taoist one names the operation between layers. Jing to chi is a conversion, not a level.

And that fills the gap the other two lists leave. A ladder of densities does not say how a rung is climbed. The transformation vocabulary does — the denser essence is refined into the finer one, and that refinement is the climbing.

Which is why the account can treat the three lists as one without them being redundant. Two describe the states; one describes the transitions. Together they are a complete description; separately each is missing something.

And it is consistent with how the Taoist column is used everywhere else in this materialjing, chi and shen appear as a conversion sequence rather than as an inventory.

The mapping to the actual five elements is not worked out here. Which elements correspond to which koshas is not stated, and the vault should not construct it. See The Five-Element Purification Sequence.

Analytical Case Study: Volition, and What Actually Sits on Rung Four

The fourth rung is the one where the mapping is most specific, and its content is the most immediately recognisable material on the ladder.

The vijnanamaya kosha corresponds to the volition skandha, dealing with karmic forces, mental habits, thoughts, ideas, opinions, prejudices, compulsions and decisions.3

Which is a startlingly ordinary list to find on the fourth rung of a five-rung ladder to realisation. Opinions. Prejudices. Habits. The furniture of an ordinary personality.

And it is the page's sharpest structural claim. The material a practitioner would most naturally consider themselves — what they think, prefer, decide and habitually do — is placed above the chi body and below only the base of consciousness.

Which reverses a common assumption about the order of difficulty. Most practitioners would expect their opinions to be more tractable than their energy body. This ladder says opinions are a subtler layer, worked later, and therefore not reachable by anything applied at rung two.

Which gives a real diagnostic prediction, and it is checkable against experience. A practitioner doing intensive energy work should not expect their prejudices, compulsions and habitual positions to change as a result. Those live a rung up. And the common observation that advanced practitioners retain conspicuous personality defects is exactly what this ladder predicts.

The fifth rung is the base. The anandamaya kosha corresponds to the consciousness skandha — the cognizance base supporting all experiences.3 Not a state, a substrate.

And the ladder's honesty is that it does not promise the top rung dissolves the fourth. Karmic forces are named as the content of rung four, and karma is the account's term for what persists. See The Volition Skandha and the Shimmering Mirage.

Implementation Workflow

1. Locate yourself by vocabulary. If everything you can say about your practice concerns energy and sensation, the framework places you at rung two2 — the crowded one.

2. Do not expect a lower rung's work to do a higher rung's job. Chi work refines chi. Opinions, compulsions and habits are rung four3 and are not addressed by it.

3. Work density order, not preference order. The layers are progressively purified chi;2 the sequence follows density and cannot be reordered.

4. Use whichever vocabulary is in front of you. Breaking a skandha, purifying a layer of chi and transforming an essence are the same event.4 A description from any of the three columns is usable.

5. Do not take any of the bodies as yourself. No body produced through cultivation, however subtle and refined, is your real and true identity6 — stated as one of Shakyamuni's four cardinal teachings.

6. Expect the covering to leave physically. The inner chi body's covering is described as cleansed, deflating, and itself exuded from the body.10 The layers are not merely conceptual in this account.

7. Treat the powers catalogue as a rung, not a destination. The transformations attributed to the refined body — appearing and disappearing at will, the Arhat's mastery of elements11are placed on the ladder, which means they too are a layer to be seen through.

8. If in doubt, use the orthodox route. The approach that cuts off attachment to both mind and body from the start is described as "a lot higher" and typically more effective.9 It climbs the ladder without cataloguing it.

What Is Left When the Ladder Ends

The ladder's own terminus is stated by negation, and the negation includes the ladder.

The Heart Sutra is quoted to the effect that there is no form, no matter, no chi, no consciousness, no five skandhasall of it illusion from the standpoint of the absolute nature.5

Which retires the entire apparatus at the top. The five rungs are real relative to a practitioner climbing them and not real absolutely.

And it is restated without the scriptural frame. Ultimately there is no physical body and no purified chi body. No forms or attributes in the Real Self. Awareness has no body, no centre and no form, and is empty of essence.7

Which is the answer to the obvious question a ladder of bodies provokeswhat body am I at the top? None. The sequence of increasingly refined bodies terminates in no body at all, which means the refinement was never producing the destination.

And that is the specific trap named. Those who concentrate on the channels and chakras come to believe they are ultimately real and become trapped in new realms of form.8 The ladder's own rungs become the cage.

Which is why the account keeps the taxonomy and keeps warning against it in the same passages. The map is offered and its provisional status is asserted in the same breath — and the tension is not resolved anywhere in the range read. See You Do Not Need to Know Any of This.

What the Bottom Rung Tops Out At

The refinement of the densest layer has a described endpoint, and it is the most extravagant material on the page.

Purifying all the layers of chi, with consciousness purifying in tandem, transforms the dense material body into pure chi so that it can appear and disappear at willthe stage of an Arhat, rishi or Immortal.11

And the powers are itemised. Arhats rising into the air before death, demonstrating mastery over the fire and water elements, with Elijah and Ananda named.11 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY. Recorded as what the tradition asserts.

The catalogue is given its own name. The "eighteen transformations": emitting water from the upper body and fire from the lower or the reverse, walking or sleeping in space, diving into the earth, travelling at great speed — with Elijah's miracles given as examples of an Arhat's powers.12

Which is the endpoint of the first rung only, and this is the placement worth holding onto. All of that is what happens when the form layer is completely refined. Four rungs remain above it.

And the account's own comment on the catalogue is the correct one. Orthodox Buddhism declines to emphasise these aspects, because emphasis on physical transformation or superpowers leads people to think cultivating the Tao means cultivating the form, and further encourages attachment to the body.13

Which is the page's structure in miniature. The taxonomy is supplied, the extravagant end of it is described, and the description is immediately marked as the thing that misleads people. See The Eighteen Transformations.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — the kosha–skandha mapping, the element correspondence and every named figure are given without texts.111

🚩 SINGLE SOURCE [PRACTITIONER SOURCE] — the mapping as a mapping exists in this account only.

[SPECULATIVE] — the rung-two traffic explanation is the vault's inference, not the source's.

Tension within the subject. The ladder is presented as a real structure with a real order, and the Heart Sutra passage denies all five rungs.57 Both are held; the account does not say at what point the taxonomy stops being useful.

Tension in the recommendation. The taxonomy is supplied in detail and the orthodox route that ignores it is called higher and more effective.9 The account teaches the map and recommends the road that does not need it.

Open question. The Taoist five elements are named in the mapping and never mapped.1 Which element corresponds to which kosha is not stated in the range read, and the third column is therefore incomplete as given.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Convergent: the identity claim — one process, three vocabularies — is stated consistently here and wherever the vocabularies meet.4

Divergent: the powers catalogue1112 and the warning against emphasising it13 appear within two pages of each other, and the account acknowledges the problem while doing the thing that causes it. See Gong-Fu Is the Signpost, Not the Road.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Convergent Evolution of Knowledge Systems — the cross-domain case examines when independent traditions arriving at similar structures constitutes evidence about the territory rather than about the traditions. This mapping is exactly the case that needs the distinction, and it fails the easy version of the test. Three lists of five is weak convergence — five is a common enumeration and the columns were mapped by one person with a framework already in hand, not derived independently and found to agree. But the insight neither domain supplies alone comes from what the mapping does with its third column: the Taoist list is not another set of layers, it is a set of transitions, and it fills a gap the other two share. Genuine convergent structure should show complementary asymmetries like that — traditions carving the same territory differently and each preserving what the others dropped. A mapping where all three columns said the same thing would be evidence of borrowing; one where they cover for each other's omissions is the harder pattern to manufacture, and it is the only part of this correspondence that carries weight.

The Live Edge

The mapping is asserted rung by rung and demonstrated nowhere. No Vedantic text is cited for a kosha, no Abhidharma source for a skandha, and the elements are named without being placed. As comparative scholarship it is unsupported; as a working schema it is coherent and internally consistent, which is the honest description of what it is.

The live edge is rung four. Placing opinions, prejudices, compulsions and habits above the chi body3 is the mapping's most consequential and most testable claim — it predicts that intensive energy practice will leave the personality untouched, and that prediction is checkable against any community of long-term practitioners. The account never states it as a prediction, and nothing in the vault tests it, but it is the one place where this taxonomy would earn its keep or fail visibly.
