The channel system is a circuit, and the recommended mental model is mechanical.
"You should think of the body's channel system as a set of closed hydraulic loops with the chi circulating to a tiny chakra bulb intersection point at the top of the head."1
Closed loops. Not rays, not fields, not centres that radiate — circuits with a return path, where what goes up must come down and rejoin.
With a junction at the crown. A "tiny chakra bulb intersection point" where the upward routes meet before the flow turns.
Which sets the expectation for everything else: a system with directions, pressures, capacities and returns, behaving the way a fluid circuit behaves.
The circuit's actual layout is specified, and it is worth having as a picture.
"The du-mai and sushumna send chi upwards while the jen-mai and the left and right take the overflow downwards."1
Upward carriers: the du-mai (the back channel, along the spine) and the sushumna (the central channel).
Downward carriers: the jen-mai (the front channel) and the left and right — ida and pingala.
Overflow is the operative word for the downward side. The descending channels take what the ascending ones deliver — they are the return leg, not independent routes.
And the correspondence to ordinary anatomy is given: the du-mai to the spinal cord, the jen-mai to the autonomic nervous system and viscera.5
With an observation about order: "in truth, you almost always feel the back du-mai channel opening before anything else."5
The back goes first. Which is a checkable prediction about your own sequence, and it is the first thing most practitioners will meet.
The channels do not open independently, and the sequence is the most practically useful thing on this page.
"Energy becomes available to open the central channel after the ida and pingala open, and those [are] unable to open unless the front and back have also been somewhat opened."1
Read backwards, that is a dependency chain:
Front and back first — jen-mai and du-mai, at least somewhat.
Then left and right — ida and pingala, which cannot open before that.
Then the central channel, which only becomes available after ida and pingala.
Which explains why the sushumna is a late event rather than a starting point, and why trying to work it directly is futile: the energy to open it is released by the channels that precede it. See Opening the Sushumna Is Not Completion.
Five main channels, and "most schools stress the five main channels and say the peripheral systems will open afterwards."1
There is an exception to the peripheral-comes-later rule, and it is the one people skip.
The other main branches include "the two leg systems into each foot,"1 and the full circulations cannot start without them: the microcosmic and macrocosmic circulations are only initiable once the foot channels open.2
Which puts the feet on the critical path rather than at the edge of it. And the heel is named as functional hardware — a pumping station on the return circuit.2
Which makes sense of the hydraulic model. A closed loop needs a return, the return runs to the bottom, and something has to move fluid back up from the lowest point. The heel is that.
So a practitioner working only the trunk has an incomplete circuit no matter how well the spine opens — the loop has no bottom. See Chuang Tzu's Men Breathed Into Their Heels.
A hydraulic circuit is not a metaphor here; it is a model that makes predictions the "energy centre" picture cannot.
It predicts a dependency order. Circuits fill in sequence — you cannot pressurise a downstream segment before the upstream one carries flow. Which is exactly the front-and-back → left-and-right → central chain.
It predicts that blocking is catastrophic rather than redirecting. In a closed loop, closing a route does not send flow elsewhere usefully; it raises pressure and starves the return. Which is why the standing rule is never to block a channel and never to hold. See Never Block a Channel.
It predicts that capacity matters more than supply. Too much flow into unrated piping is a failure of the circuit, not of the pump — which is the premature-opening account exactly. See The Premature Valve.
And it predicts that sensation means friction. Flow through a clear pipe is quiet; obstruction is what you feel. Which is why the rotation stops being felt once the orbit is clear.
Four separate claims elsewhere in the material fall out of one model — which is the strongest reason to prefer this framing over any of the more decorative ones.
Work the back first, and expect it to come first. The du-mai is what almost everyone feels opening before anything else.
Do not aim at the central channel. It opens when the energy for it becomes available, which is downstream of four other channels. Attention there is early by definition.
Include the legs and feet deliberately. They are on the critical path and they are the part every trunk-focused method omits.
Never block, never hold. In a closed loop those are the two ways to break the circuit rather than direct it.
And use the model as a picture, not as a target. Which is the standing caution, stated plainly: "to succeed in cultivation you don't need to know about chi channels at all," and the information is there to serve as guideposts.6
The specific risk of a good model: those who concentrate on the channels and chakras "come to believe they are ultimately real and become trapped in new realms of form."7 A better model is a more convincing thing to get stuck in. See The Form School's Catastrophe.
The variation across traditions is explained by which feature each one chose to emphasise.
As orbits. Some schools describe the circulations by the orbits of planets — which foregrounds the cyclical return.4
As a tree. Others as a tree or bush with many branches, "the latter the method used in the Jewish tradition" — which foregrounds the branching into peripheral systems.4
As objects. The central channel and its junction represented by Shiva's or Poseidon's trident; the sushumna by Krishna's flute or Rama's bowstring.3
One circuit, four renderings, and the differences track what each culture had to draw with and which property mattered to them.
Which is why the commonalities are hard to see from outside: "symbologists have missed the commonalities because they are not cultivators themselves and are not familiar with the results of cultivation practice either."3 🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION — no scholar or work is named.

The trident identification is worth pulling out because it is the most legible of the four.
A trident is three prongs meeting a single shaft.
Which is what the top of this circuit is: the central channel arriving at a junction, with the routes that carry the overflow away.
Which is a genuinely constrained reading — it uses the object's structure rather than its associations, and it would fail if the object were a sword or a staff. And it is the same structural logic that reads petal counts off mandalas. See No Tantra Is More Powerful Than Another.
The flute and bowstring readings are weaker on the same test — a long straight thing is a long straight thing, and there are many candidates.
Which is the ordinary situation with this kind of identification: the ones that use structure hold up, and the ones that use resemblance do not.

Tension — five main channels, and the legs are essential. The peripheral systems are said to open afterwards, and the foot channels are required before the full circulations can start. Both are stated a few pages apart.
Tension — a model you need and must not believe. The circuit picture is offered as the way to think about the system, and believing the channels are ultimately real is named as the trap.
Open question — what is the macrocosmic circulation's route? The microcosmic loop is specified; the macrocosmic one is named repeatedly and never mapped.
Open question — how does the crown junction work? It is the point where the whole circuit turns, described as a tiny bulb intersection, and nothing further is said about what happens there.
Two things you are told about this anatomy, and they are hard to hold at once.
Learn it. A specific model, with a layout, a dependency order, named hardware and a return circuit — offered because it explains what you will feel and in what sequence.
And you don't need it. "To succeed in cultivation you don't need to know about chi channels at all."6 The information is guideposts, and the people who take it most seriously are the ones who end up trapped in form.
Which is the same tension the whole map carries, at its most concentrated: the better the model, the more useful it is for orientation and the more attractive it is to get lost in.
The convergence is that every safety rule in the material falls out of the hydraulics. Don't block, don't hold, don't force, cover the whole circuit, expect the back first. One picture, and the rules stop being arbitrary.
Systems Are the New Product — business.
The shift from shipping outputs to building the system that produces them. Two things carry.
A system's behaviour is determined by its constraints and flows, not by its components. Understanding what a system will do means tracing where things move, where they bottleneck, and what depends on what — not cataloguing its parts.
And the leverage is at the constraint. Effort applied anywhere else in a system produces nothing, because throughput is set by the tightest point regardless of how much you improve the rest.
Which is what the hydraulic framing does to this anatomy. A list of channels and chakras is a component catalogue; a set of closed loops with a dependency order is a system, and only the second tells you where effort will do anything.
The constraint point is the operative transfer. In this circuit the constraint is whatever has not opened yet — and the dependency chain says exactly where that is at each stage: front and back, then left and right, then central, with the feet gating the full circulation. Work applied downstream of the current constraint does nothing, which is precisely why aiming at the central channel early is wasted effort.
And it explains why the feet keep being emphasised against every instinct. A return path is invisible and non-negotiable. Nobody's attention naturally goes to the bottom of a loop, and the loop does not close without it.
Practical form: when you have a system rather than a list, find the current constraint and work only there — and check the return path first, because it is the part nobody looks at and the part that stops everything.
What the source leaves undetermined is what the loops are closed against.
A closed hydraulic system is closed — nothing enters, nothing leaves, and the fluid circulates. Which is the model offered.
And the surrounding material has chi entering and leaving constantly. Energy absorbed from sunlight and moonlight. Chi lost through sexual dissipation. Dirty chi ejected out an orifice. Entire structures rising out of the body and floating away.
Those are open-system behaviours in a closed-system model, and nothing reconciles them.
The reconciliation matters practically, because the two pictures give opposite advice about the same question. In a closed loop, conservation is everything — which is the celibacy argument, the retention argument, the do-not-dissipate argument. In an open system, throughput matters more than conservation, and what you take in is as important as what you keep.
