Opening the Sushumna Is Not Completion

A Signpost, Not a Finish Line

The central channel opening is treated by some schools as the start of the final phase. The correction is that it is a marker on a long road.

"We should just consider this stage a signpost or marker because there are many more stages and years of cultivation experiences to go through."2

The Esoteric school "signifies the opening of the sushumna as the start of something different from all previous stages and calls it the commencement of the completion stage."2 Which is accurate as a phase boundary and misleading as a promise.

Years more. Elsewhere the figure is given: ten to twelve years to transform the body, starting from here. See The Rotation Counts Are Fictitious.

The one thing not in doubt is whether you will know: the signs of this Labor are "impossible to miss, occurring over a very short period, with subsequent stages unmistakable."2

An Announcement of Hope

The specific claim being corrected is the one that says the rest follows automatically.

"To say that one will definitely attain the Tao after this stage or that completion is assured is actually an announcement of hope rather than a reality one can count on."1

An announcement of hope. Which is a precise and generous description of what such claims are — not lies, and not something to plan on.

What is required instead: "the need to continue devoted cultivation work with the right view to the very end, which may take years more."1

Right view is the operative qualifier, and it is doing work. Continued effort is not sufficient by itself; the effort has to be correctly aimed, which is exactly what the form-school practitioners lack while working extremely hard. See The Form School's Catastrophe.

And the stronger version of the correction: assuming samadhi or enlightenment follows from opening the sushumna, "as yoga and Tibetan Buddhism sometimes insinuate," is called a foolish assumption.3

And You Must Still Do It

The correction does not become a reason to skip it.

"And yet definitely you must open it."3

Which is the balance the page turns on. The sushumna opening is necessary and not sufficient — and both halves have to be held, because dropping either one produces a recognisable error.

Drop the necessity and you get practitioners who treat the physical work as optional, which the material rejects: the physical foundation is required for the complete attainment.

Drop the insufficiency and you get practitioners who arrive at the marker and stop, which is what the announcement of hope produces.

What actually becomes available at that point is stated in terms of reach rather than arrival: once the central channel opens, the chi can traverse all sorts of other circulations, "and you are in reach of samadhi attainments if you cultivate further."6

In reach. If you cultivate further. Two conditions in one sentence.

Countless Ways to Go Astray

The warning about what can still go wrong is attributed to scripture.

Shakyamuni's teaching, "especially in the Surangama Sutra," is that there are countless ways one can still go astray.3

🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — the sutra is named without a passage, and this ingest has not consulted it.

But the claim's shape matters more than its sourcing. The dangers do not decrease after the central channel opens; they change. Which fits everything else about the later stages: semblance samadhi, superpowers, attainment that is not the Tao, and the fixation that lasts across lifetimes.

Which is why right view keeps being attached to continued effort. A practitioner past this marker has more capacity and more ways to misuse it. See Samadhi Without the Tao.

Analytical Case Study: Nobody Is Finished

The insufficiency is pushed all the way to the top, and the argument is structural.

"No Buddha or Bodhisattva considers their cultivation complete because all of consciousness is not yet transformed, and it is all you."4

Follow the logic. If there is one consciousness and it is all you, then your cultivation is not complete while any part of it remains untransformed — which means completion is not a state an individual can reach while anything else exists unenlightened.

Which is why Buddhas and Bodhisattvas "chose to keep being reborn to help sentient beings awaken" rather than exiting.5

And it makes the vow structural rather than pious. Not a generous choice made after finishing, but a consequence of what finishing would have to mean.

The practical version for a practitioner nowhere near that: "never be self-satisfied with one's current attainment."4 Which is the same principle applied at the scale where it is actually operative — there is no attainment at which the correct response is satisfaction, and the argument for that runs all the way up.

Implementation Workflow

Treat the opening as information, not as an arrival. It tells you where you are and it changes what practice is appropriate. It does not tell you that the rest is secured.

Keep going, with right view. Devoted work to the very end, aimed correctly — which means continuing to search for the source of mind rather than continuing to work the body.

Switch what you are doing. The body techniques were starters; past this point emptiness cultivation is what moves things. See The Match and the Flame.

Expect more ways to go wrong, not fewer. The failure modes past this marker are subtler and more convincing than the ones before it.

And do not measure yourself against completion. On the stated argument nobody has it, including the figures at the top of the tradition. The only available posture is continuing.

Great Men and Women, and How Far Is Up to You

The framing of what remains is unusually plain about who decides it.

"You can become a great man or woman if you continue to cultivate, but how far you go is all up to your efforts."4

No guarantee, and no ceiling either.

Which is worth noting for its register. There is no promise of enlightenment, no assurance of completion, and no claim that reaching this marker entitles you to anything. What is offered is that the outcome scales with what you put in.

And it is offered alongside the reminder that self-realization is not assured, with a long cultivation process still ahead.4

Which is a demanding thing to say to someone who has just crossed the threshold the traditions call the beginning of completion — and it is the honest version, given that the same material says the transformation takes another decade and that countless ways to go astray remain.

A Heroic Feat Few Ever Attempt

There is a counterweight to all the deflation, and it belongs on the page.

Those who open the central channel are "performing a heroic feat few ever work at achieving," and "once they open up the central channel they are in reach of being able to see the Tao and complete the rest of the cultivation journey."7

Few ever work at it. Which is a claim about the population, not about difficulty — most people never attempt this at all.

So the correction is not that the achievement is small. It is that the achievement is real and the conclusion drawn from it is wrong.

Both are held: a heroic feat, and a signpost. The person who has done it has done something almost nobody does, and they are not finished — and the material is careful to say the first before insisting on the second.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — the Surangama Sutra named without passage; yoga and Tibetan Buddhism sometimes insinuate names no text.

Tension — impossible to miss, and some may not know. The signs here are called unmistakable, while elsewhere the same threshold is said to be one that "some may not know what progress they have achieved along." See The Rotation Is the Better Milestone.

Tension — necessary and insufficient. Both are stated flatly, and no guidance is offered on how much of the remaining decade is body work versus emptiness work.

Open question — what are the countless ways to go astray? The warning is invoked and the failure modes past this point are never enumerated, which is the one place a practitioner would most want a list.

Open question — what does "right view" consist of here? It is the qualifier that decides whether continued effort counts, and it is never specified operationally.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two things this page does to the same event, and a practitioner has to hold both.

It elevates it. A heroic feat few attempt, the point at which samadhi comes into reach, the physical foundation of the completion phase, unmistakable when it happens.

And it demotes it. A signpost, not an assurance; foolish to assume anything follows; ten to twelve years of transformation still ahead; countless ways to go astray.

Which is not a contradiction so much as a refusal to let the achievement do work it cannot do. The demotion is aimed at the inference, not at the event.

The convergence is with the general position on every marker: real, informative, and not the thing. Gongfu is a signpost and not the road, said here about the largest signpost there is. See Gong Fu Is the Signpost, Not the Road.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

The Culminating Point of Victory — behavioral mechanics.

Clausewitz's observation: an advance has a point past which continuing weakens rather than strengthens you. Supply lines lengthen, the defender's lines shorten, and the force that was winning becomes overextended — the moment of greatest apparent success is often the moment the position becomes most fragile.

Two things carry.

Success generates the conditions for the subsequent failure. It is not that momentum runs out arbitrarily; the advance itself creates the exposure, which is why the danger is highest exactly where the achievement is greatest.

And the culminating point is invisible from inside the advance. Everything still looks like winning. The signals that would tell you to stop are the same signals that told you to continue.

Which is the structure of this threshold precisely. The sushumna opening is a genuine victory that creates a new and worse exposure — the practitioner now has capacities, states, and unmistakable evidence of progress, and those are the exact materials that the semblance samadhi and superpower failures are made of.

Countless ways one can still go astray is the culminating-point warning in another vocabulary: more can go wrong now than before, because you have more.

And the second point explains why the announcement of hope is so persuasive. From inside, having just crossed a threshold nobody else reaches, every indicator says the campaign is won. There is no experience available that says this is where overextension starts — which is why the correction has to be supplied from outside, in advance, by someone who has been past it.

Practical form: the point of maximum visible achievement is where the failure conditions are richest — so build the review into the plan before you arrive, because on arrival everything will look like confirmation.

The Live Edge

What the source leaves undetermined is what the remaining decade is supposed to consist of.

The material is precise about the years — ten to twelve to transform the body after this point — and precise about what not to do, which is assume anything follows.

And it never says what fills them.

The instructions available are general: continue with right view, cultivate emptiness, keep practising, do not be satisfied. Which is the same instruction as before the threshold, and the threshold was supposed to mark a change of phase.

If the completion stage is genuinely different from everything before it, as the Esoteric schools say and this page does not dispute, then it should have its own practices, its own markers and its own failure modes described — and past the rotation the phenomenology thins out sharply.

Which leaves the longest stretch of the path as the least mapped, and it is the stretch a reader who has got this far most needs.
