What the Two Cases Share

Neither Einstein nor Grandin succeeded by overcoming their differences. Both built entire careers by identifying a specific trait everyone else read as a limitation, and deliberately routing their whole strategy through it rather than around it. Einstein's outsider status and image-based thinking; Grandin's sensory intensity and visual, empathic connection to animal experience. Greene's phrase for the underlying discipline: knowing your particular strengths and weaknesses as realistically as possible, then leaning into the strengths with full intensity rather than spending energy fighting the weaknesses.8

Why Most People Don't Do This

Greene names the obstacle directly: human conformism. Traits that mark someone as different get ridiculed by peers or flagged as problems by teachers and institutions — Greene's specific example is a high visual sense frequently getting labeled dyslexia rather than recognized as a distinct cognitive strength.9 Under that pressure, people learn to treat their own genuine peculiarities as disabilities to manage or hide, rather than as the exact material mastery is supposed to be built from. The corrective isn't self-esteem in the abstract. It's specific, honest self-assessment of what you actually do differently from other people — and then building around that difference rather than sanding it down to fit in.

Implementation Workflow

The "just two decisions" framing understates real structural advantage. Greene presents Einstein's success as flowing from two ordinary, replicable decisions, but glosses over the fact that Einstein had a stable job, family support, and enough financial security to spend years on unpaid, unsponsored theoretical work. The strategy as stated assumes a baseline of stability that isn't universally available, and Greene doesn't address what "playing to your strengths" looks like without that cushion.

Open question: both cases involve a trait initially read by others as a deficit and later revealed as an asset. Greene doesn't address the inverse — how would someone actually distinguish a genuine hidden strength from a genuine limitation before the multi-year investment required to find out which it is?
