Apprenticeship is where you naturally begin with distinctions — right way versus wrong way, individual skills and their specific techniques, the rules a field runs on. The Creative-Active phase starts melting those distinctions, experimenting with and reshaping the conventions absorbed during apprenticeship. Mastery completes the arc: a return to a felt sense of the whole, where connections are intuited rather than assembled piece by piece, and the brain expands to something closer to the dimensions of reality itself rather than shrinking into narrow specialization.6
On this account, mastery isn't just personal skill development. It's individual participation in the same larger movement — away from the artificial isolation specialization imposes, back toward the interconnection that was always the actual ground truth.
The chapter's most striking specific claim: the distinction between "you" and "the world" is itself softer than it feels. Every act of learning physically alters brain structure through new connections — your subjective experience of something in the world literally changes your physical brain.
