The 5th house is children. Many traditional methods estimate the number of children — Saturn's position, Jupiter's strength, the 5th-lord's Navāmsa. Larsen surfaces a progression-method: track the 5th-lord's progressed-Navāmsa across the native's life-span. Each sign the progressed 5th-lord passes through delivers (or denies) a child, with the sign's nature determining the outcome.¹

Queen Alexandra (consort of King Edward VII) had six surviving children. Her chart's 5th-lord-progressed-Navāmsa across Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Gemini, Leo, and Virgo delivered each child precisely at the corresponding Daśā-period. What This Actually Is

The method, per Larsen citing Sharma (1986) Sarvārtha Chintāmaṇi:²

1. Identify the 5th-lord (or both lords if dual).
2. Identify the 5th-lord's Navāmsa-sign at birth.
3. Project the 5th-lord forward through subsequent Navāmsa-signs across the native's life-trajectory.
4. Each sign in the progression-sequence corresponds to a potential child.
5. The sign's quality (planetary placement, lordship-strength, malefic/benefic occupation) determines whether that progression-period delivers a child, what kind of child, or denies a child.

The maximum possible children is computed from the progression's range — Saturn-progressed-Navāmsa typically gives 3-7 progressions across an average life-span, Rāhu-progressed-Navāmsa gives up to 11 (as 12-1=11).

The Mechanism

Each Navāmsa-sign represents a sub-quality of the larger sign. The 5th-lord progressing through them constitutes a sequential-activation of the sign-qualities. When the sign-quality is child-supportive (benefic-occupied, well-lorded, not afflicted), the progression-period delivers a child. When the sign-quality is child-obstructive (malefic-occupied, debilitated, afflicted), the period denies or aborts.

This produces a child-by-child timing-prediction that other 5th-house methods cannot match. The native does not just know "you will have N children"; they know when each child is likely, with what flavor, surviving how long.

Implementation Workflow: A Wednesday Pre-Pregnancy Reading

A couple sits across from you. She is 31, he is 33. They have been trying for a child for fourteen months. They want to know whether it will happen, and if so when, and how many. They are not asking for promises — they are asking for honesty about what the chart says.

You open her chart. The Lagna is Pisces; the 5th-lord is the Moon. Moon sits in Cancer in the Rāśi and in Aries in the Navāmsa. You don't speak yet. You write the Navāmsa-signs out across a horizontal line on your notepad, starting from Aries and walking forward: Aries / Taurus / Gemini / Cancer / Leo / Virgo. You check what each sign houses in her chart.

Aries — Mars, weak in debility. First-pregnancy possible but child-vulnerability flagged. You write a small "?" beside Aries.

Taurus — empty, aspected by Jupiter. Second pregnancy clean and supported. Tick.

Gemini — Saturn here, the slow lord. Third pregnancy delayed; possibly miscarriage or significant wait. Cross.

Cancer — exalted Jupiter. Fourth pregnancy strong and joyful. Big tick.

Leo — empty, no major aspects. Fifth not promised. Blank.

Virgo — Rāhu, afflicting. Sixth pregnancy carries risk; the chart doesn't promise this many anyway. Cross.

You stop. The progression's effective range is about three live-children with one heavy delay between the second and the third. You look up. Three children is what your chart promises. You don't tell them about the question-mark on Aries yet — they need to walk through the first attempt to know what it means. You tell them the first attempt is possible but vulnerable; they should be patient. The strongest pregnancy is the fourth Navāmsa-sign — Cancer — and that's their Jupiter-aspected sign, exalted, joyful.

She asks what period delivers each. You walk to the planetary-Daśā chart and overlay the Daśā-Antaradaśā timing on the Navāmsa-progression. The math is delicate; the conversation takes another twenty minutes. By the end she has dates. They are guidelines, not guarantees.

They leave with a child-promised window of seven years and a clear sense that the fourth sign is the major-event year. They also leave with the awareness that the chart codes three children — not four, not five. If they try to exceed the progression's range, the system enters Tridevi-Trideva Doṣa territory. The chart's natural limit is the chart's natural limit. The reading-discipline includes telling them what the chart says no to as well as what it says yes to.

The Progressed-Navāmsa Failure (Diagnostic Signs)

• Using only Saturn-progressed-Navāmsa without checking Rāhu (or alternative lord). Multiple 5th-lords often coexist; the progression must include all.
• Reading sign-quality without checking aspects. A sign that looks malefic-occupied may receive benefic aspect that overrides; conversely, a benefic-looking sign may be afflicted by malefic aspect.
• Predicting more children than the chart codes. If the maximum-progression range gives 3 children, the chart codes 3. Exceeding the count produces Tridevi/Trideva Doṣa or similar misfortune-architecture.
• Mixing this method with single-point methods (e.g., 5th-lord-strength alone) and treating the readings as equivalent. The progression-method is a complement, not a replacement.

A real open question: how does the progression-rate work technically? Is it one Navāmsa-sign per year, one per planetary period, or one per Daśā?

A second open question: does the progression apply to other house-lords (e.g., 7th-lord-progressed for marriage-events, 10th-lord-progressed for career-events)? Larsen's text only explicitly covers 5th-lord; the architecture suggests generalization is possible.

The Sharpest Implication

If the progressed-Navāmsa-5L is operational, then family-planning advice from a Vedic-astrologer can be far more specific than from secular fertility-experts. The framework names which years deliver which child with which flavor and survival-pattern. The corrective for over-reliance: the chart's coding is not deterministic; medical-conditions and lifestyle-factors still operate at the proximate-cause layer.
