Separate Them From Their Power Base

The Chapter Quietly Ranks Its Own Techniques and Picks a Different One

Law 42 is called strike the shepherd. Its Image is about luring a man away. Both its Observances are physical removals. And then the Keys say this.

The most effective form of isolation is somehow to separate your victims from their power base. When Mao Tse-tung wanted to eliminate an enemy in the ruling elite, he did not confront the person directly; he silently and stealthily worked to isolate the man, divide his allies and turn them away from him, shrink his support. Soon the man would vanish on his own.1

The most effective form.

Of the three isolations, Greene ranks political highestand the chapter's title, image and both set pieces are about physical.

The corpus should record it as another chapter-versus-Keys divergence, and this one costs the reader something. The technique the book is named for is not the technique the book says works best, and the one it says works best gets three sentences.

Soon the Man Would Vanish On His Own

The ending is the whole design.

Soon the man would vanish on his own.

No confrontation, no visible act, no moment anyone can point at. The target's own departure is the final step, which means there is no event to attribute to youand therefore nothing to resent, nothing to avenge, and nothing to report.

Compare what the chapter's other techniques leave behind. A banishment produces a named victim with a date. A lure produces a man in Rome who later writes about it.A shrunken support base produces a resignation.

Nothing to See

Which is why it is the most effective and also why it is the least teachable: there is nothing to see, including for the person learning it.

Somehow

🚩 ⚠ The instruction contains its own gap and the word is somehow.

The most effective form of isolation is somehow to separate your victims from their power base.

The chapter names the best technique and then supplies, as method, an adverb.

The three verbs that follow are not much better. Divide his allies and turn them away from him, shrink his supportare three restatements of the objective, not three steps toward it. Nothing in the passage says how an ally is divided or what is offered.

The corpus should record this as a general property rather than a one-off lapse. Across the build, the book's specificity is inversely related to the technique's difficulty. The vivid physical removals get scenes, quotations and dates. The quiet structural work — which the chapter itself says is more effective — gets a paragraph and an adverb.

Do Not Attack, Except Like This

The Judgment and this passage are in direct tension and the chapter does not mark it.

Interpretation I: "Do not attack them, whether directly or indirectly, for they are poisonous in nature and will work underground to destroy you."2

The Keys: he did not confront the person directly; he silently and stealthily worked to isolate the man.

Working stealthily to divide someone's allies is an indirect attack by any ordinary reading.

The distinction Greene is actually drawing — and never states — is between confrontation and attack. The prohibition is on giving the target something to fight, not on fighting them.Which is coherent and would have been worth a sentence, because as printed the chapter forbids indirect attack on one page and models one on the next.

🚩 Mao Vanishing People

🚩 ⚠ No name, no date, no episode. The victim is "an enemy in the ruling elite" — a category, not a personfor a leader whose eliminations are among the most extensively documented in the twentieth century. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY. [LOW CONFIDENCE].

🚩 ⚠ And "the man would vanish on his own" is doing something the corpus should name. In the context of Mao's China the word vanish has a literal register, and the sentence borrows its menace while the phrase on his own disclaims responsibility for it.What actually happened to the people Mao removed is not stated anywhere in the passage.

The corpus recorded the same optic at Law 41, where forcing a generation of intellectuals into manual labour is described as "a nightmarish mistake that cost his regime dearly."Mao's fourth-plus appearance in the build, and the human consequences are absent from every one.

🚩 Document, don't endorse. The mechanism — support can be detached from a person without touching the person — is real and is visible in ordinary organisations. The illustration is an atrocity with the atrocity removed.

Analytical Case Study: What a Power Base Is Made Of

The technique's feasibility depends entirely on a question the passage never asks: what is holding the target's supporters to them?

If the base is positional — people who support you because you control something they need — it can be detached by controlling that thing. This is Mao's case and it is the easiest: allies are attached to the office, and the office is in the gift of someone above.

If the base is transactional — support in exchange for continuing benefit — it can be outbid.Charles de Valois used the pope's money to do exactly this to the Whites, concurrently with Dante's detention.

If the base is personal — people who are loyal to the individual rather than to what the individual can arrange — it cannot be detached at all by these means. It can only be outlasted, discredited, or physically separated.

Which yields the diagnostic the chapter needs. Before attempting political isolation, ask what each supporter is getting and from whom. Where the answer is from the institution, you can intercept it. Where the answer is from them, you cannot — ⚠ and attempting it teaches the target exactly who is loyal, which is a gift.

And it explains the chapter's own failure case. Andrew Johnson tried to shrink a general's support inside an administration. Grant's base was personal and national, and the administration was not where it lived.

Implementation Workflow

Establish what each supporter is receiving, and from where.Positional support is interceptable. Transactional support is outbiddable. Personal support is neither. The technique's whole feasibility is decided by this audit and it can be done in a week.

Work on the allies, not the target. The passage is clear on this and it is the practical core: nothing is done to the person. The moves are all directed at the people around them, and the person's position degrades as a consequence.

Leave no event. The technique's advantage over banishment is that there is nothing to point at, and that advantage is destroyed by a single visible confrontation. If you find yourself wanting the target to know, you have swapped objectivesyou are now after the satisfaction rather than the outcome, and those are priced very differently.

And be honest with yourself about the prohibition you are working around. The chapter forbids indirect attack and then models one. The real rule is do not give them something to fightwhich is a rule about visibility, not about restraint, and pretending otherwise is how a reader ends up believing they have taken the high road.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Strongest evidence. The mechanism is stated cleanly and its distinguishing property is correctly identified: the target's own departure removes the attributable event. ⚠ And the ranking is a real contribution — the chapter says the quiet structural technique beats the dramatic physical one, against everything else in its own presentation.

Tension — the Interpretation forbids indirect attack and the Keys model one.The unstated distinction is confrontation versus attack.

Tension — the most effective technique receives the least instruction.Somehow is the method.

🚩 [POPULAR SOURCE]. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY · [LOW CONFIDENCE] — no name, date or episode, for a leader whose eliminations are extensively documented. 🚩 ⚠ Vanish on his own borrows a literal register and disclaims it; what happened to the people removed is not stated.

Open questions.Does the technique work without positional authority? Mao could detach allies because he controlled what the allies wanted. A peer with no such control is running a much harder operation and the passage does not distinguish them. And what does it cost the operator? Dividing a colleague's allies requires approaching them individually, and every approach is a disclosure.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Mao's fourth-plus appearance, and the third distinct role. Law 41's Keys use him as the successful denigrator of Confucius; eighty lines later he is the man who reverted to his father's values at catastrophic scale; here he is a technician of the quiet purge.Three roles across two chapters, no cross-reference, and in all three the people affected are absent from the sentence.

Against the go passage: this is the same operation described in the other vocabularyremoving connections rather than removing pieces. The two passages are a page apart and neither refers to the other.

And against Florence: the account contains both techniques running simultaneously — Dante detained physically while Charles de Valois bought the Whites' supporters — and the Interpretation credits only the detention. This passage is the chapter's own account of what the other half of that operation was.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Business — the columnist who did not need the paper. The Columnist Who Didn't Need the Paper traces the shift: for most of the twentieth century a star writer's power ran entirely through the masthead that hosted them — the paper's brand got the eyeballs and the writer's brilliance was rented out to readers who already trusted it — until star journalists noticed they no longer needed the intervening brand at all.

Divide his allies and turn them away from him, shrink his support.

The insight neither produces alone: ⚠ Greene's technique assumes the target's support is mediated — that it reaches them through structures somebody else can interfere with. That was universally true in every case the chapter cites, and the disintermediation frame names the condition and dates its erosion. ⚠ A person whose base is institutional can be separated from it by whoever controls the institution. A person with a direct relationship to their audience cannot be, because there is no intervening layer to work on.Which makes political isolation a technique with a shrinking domain rather than a permanent oneand it explains why the modern version of this move so often produces the opposite result: the isolator interferes with the mediated part, the target's direct following notices, and the interference itself becomes the story that grows the base. The corpus should record the test: does this person's support arrive through anything I can touch? Where the answer is no, the entire technique is unavailable and attempting it is self-harm.

History — the man who solved this problem and ruined the system doing it. Succession Through Elimination records Stalin's version of the same operation, run to completion: rivals eliminated, mediocrities he could control installed around him — and consequently no successor, no mechanism, and no one prepared to inherit the system when he died.

Soon the man would vanish on his own.

What the pairing produces: ⚠ Law 42 evaluates each removal in isolation and never asks what an organisation full of removals looks like. The succession case supplies the aggregate: an operator who is very good at detaching people from their power bases ends up surrounded by people who have none — ⚠ which is the objective, restated as a description of the environment it produces. And a person with no independent base cannot do anything on their own, including hold the thing together after you.So the technique is individually optimal and collectively terminal, and the failure arrives only at the handover, which is the one moment the operator is not present to manage. The corpus should record it as the cost Law 42 never prices. Each application is cheap, quiet and attributable to nobody. The bill is presented once, at the end, to somebody elsewhich is exactly the structure that guarantees it will keep being run.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The chapter ranks its own techniques and picks the one it is not named forthe most effective form of isolation is political, and the title, the Image and both Observances are physical.Soon the man would vanish on his own is the design: the target's own departure removes the attributable event. And the method is somehowthe book's specificity runs inversely to the technique's difficulty. What decides feasibility is what each supporter is receiving and from whom: positional support is interceptable, transactional support is outbiddable, personal support is neitherand attempting it against personal support teaches the target who is loyal.

Generative questions.

  • Does this person's support arrive through anything I can touch? Where the answer is no, is the technique not merely useless but self-harming?
  • The prohibition is on confrontation, not on attack — a rule about visibility rather than restraint. How much of this book's apparent restraint is the same substitution?
  • Individually optimal, collectively terminal, and the bill arrives at the handover. Is that structure what guarantees the technique keeps being used?
