The monk Rasputin gained his power over Czar Nicholas and Czarina Alexandra of Russia through their tremendous isolation from the people. … Heading straight for the center, he aimed for the one figure in Russia who commanded power (the czarina dominated her husband), and found he had no need to isolate her for the work was already done.1

Everywhere else in Law 42 the operator produces the isolation. ⚠ Here the isolation is found, pre-existing, at no cost and with no risk of attribution — and the chapter says outright that this is the best version.
Always search out people who hold high positions yet who find themselves isolated on the board. They are like apples falling into your lap, easily seduced, and able to catapult you into power yourself.1

Alexandra in particular was a foreigner, and especially alienated from everyday Russians; Rasputin used his peasant origins to insinuate himself into her good graces, for she desperately wanted to communicate with her subjects.1

⚠ Which is the transferable part, and it is sharper than the chapter's version. An isolated powerful person does not have a general hunger for company. ⚠ Which is why "apples falling into your lap" is not hyperbole about the ease of the seduction — it is a statement about the absence of competitors. The unusual feature of Alexandra's court is not that she was persuadable but that only one person was persuading.
⚠ And it gives the defensive rule with a testable form. The danger sign is not that a leader is being flattered. It is that the number of independent voices has fallen — ⚠ and that is countable, by the leader and by anyone watching, in a way that susceptibility is not.

And if you are looking for a position: search for authority without adjacency. ⚠ The technique is real and it is the cheapest in the chapter. High office plus few channels is a findable condition, and the entry cost is supplying one missing thing that nobody else in that room can.
⚠ Note what it costs, though. Indispensability to an isolated principal is a position with exactly one supporter — ⚠ which is the condition this chapter is about, arrived at from the other side. Rasputin's power had the same single point of failure as Alexandra's, and it failed the same way.

The insight neither produces alone: ⚠ Greene's word is indispensable, and the bonding literature explains why indispensability produces something much stronger than usefulness. An attachment formed in a condition of scarcity is a real attachment, ⚠ which means Alexandra's trust in Rasputin was not a mistake she could have been argued out of — and this is exactly why the strategy works and why intervention from outside so reliably fails.
