Ask most practitioners what Netzach is and you'll get a list. Victory, endurance, the seventh sphere, the base of the right pillar, Venus, green, the hawk. All of it correct, and none of it tells you what would be happening in a person while Netzach was operating.
William Gray produced a table that answers exactly that, one line per sphere, in words a person with no background could follow. It was discussed during his visits to South Africa, and it is offered as one of two genuine uses of the ten Sefirot as against filing things in them. So the question is worth asking plainly. Can you put the whole diagram into ordinary English?
Here it is complete, and the third column is the one to read first.2
| # | Sphere | Function | In plain terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Nil | The Unconsciousness | I AM NOT |
| 1 | Summit | Being | The I AM |
| 2 | Wisdom | Knowing | This from That |
| 3 | Understanding | Feeling | I and They |
| 4 | Compassion | Attraction | Loving, wanting |
| 5 | Severity | Repulsion | Hating, rejecting |
| 6 | Beauty | Stabilizing | Equanimity, normality |
| 7 | Victory | Increasing | Gaining amount of awareness |
| 8 | Glory | Improving | Quality gain of awareness |
| 9 | Foundation | Constructing | Arrangement of Awareness |
| 10 | Kingdom | Continuity | Memory |
Two things are worth registering about the shape before any of the entries. There are eleven rows rather than ten, because a zero has been added below the diagram. And the middle column is entirely verbs in the present participle — knowing, feeling, stabilizing, increasing, improving, constructing — which turns a set of nouns into a set of activities.
The row that isn't on the standard diagram comes first, and it's numbered zero. Nil, glossed as The Unconsciousness, rendered as I AM NOT.2
That's an addition rather than a translation, and it changes the frame of the whole table. The traditional ten begin at the Crown. This begins one step below, in a state defined by the absence of the assertion the next row makes. And the two together read as a single move: I AM NOT, then The I AM. Everything after that happens to something which has already made the second statement.
The top three rows are the supernal triad, and their plain-English renderings are the most compressed things here. Summit is Being — The I AM. Wisdom is Knowing — This from That. Understanding is Feeling — I and They.2
Look at what those two renderings do. Knowing is defined as an act of distinction — telling one thing from another — rather than as possession of information. And Understanding is defined as a relation: the recognition that there is an I and there are others. Both are events rather than contents, which is consistent with the participles in the middle column.
The next three are the ordinary emotional life, named without any elevation at all. Compassion is Attraction — loving, wanting. Severity is Repulsion — hating, rejecting. And Beauty is Stabilizing — equanimity, normality.2
Two features stand out and both are in the table rather than added to it. Wanting sits inside Compassion, and hating sits inside Severity — so the spheres are not being rendered as virtues but as the raw motions that virtue and vice are both made of. And Beauty's rendering is normality, which is a startling word for the sphere everybody treats as the summit of the middle pillar.
The three below that turn out to be three operations on a single thing, and the single thing is awareness. Victory is Increasing — gaining amount of awareness. Glory is Improving — quality gain of awareness. Foundation is Constructing — arrangement of Awareness.2
Amount, quality, arrangement. That is a genuinely useful trio because the three come apart in practice: a person can have more awareness without it being better, or better awareness with no order to it. And each has its own sphere, which means the tradition treats them as distinct achievements requiring distinct work.
The last row is the shortest and the strangest. Kingdom is Continuity, rendered in a single word: Memory.2 Malchut is the sphere everyone else renders as the physical world — the body, manifestation, the kingdom you are responsible for. Here it is memory, and the function is continuity.
The two are not far apart once you sit with it, and the table says nothing more, so the honest thing is to note the identification and stop. What can be observed is that the bottom of the diagram gets a temporal function rather than a material one. A table which began at I AM NOT ends at the faculty by which anything persists at all.
You know the sphere names and you have never been able to feel what any of them refers to. Four moves, and all of them are checks against your own week rather than against a book. Take the table one row at a time and find the entry in your own week. Gaining amount of awareness is a thing that happened to you on some specific afternoon. So is hating, rejecting. Locate the actual instance before you think about the sphere, because the table was built to make that possible.
Then use the participles as the test of whether something is live. Every function in the middle column is a present-tense activity, so ask what is currently knowing, feeling, stabilizing or constructing in you. A sphere you cannot find a live verb for is not operating, whatever you know about it.
Then notice which of the three awareness-operations you neglect. Most people run one hard — accumulating, refining, or organising — and let the other two go. The table separates them precisely so that the neglect becomes visible.
And take the zero row seriously as a starting point rather than a curiosity. I AM NOT is offered as a state, and the table's first move is out of it. Whatever else the diagram describes, it begins with an assertion that has to be made.
What's on offer here is a table, reproduced, with almost no surrounding argument. It's presented as one of two uses of the ten Sefirot discussed in conversation, and the entries are left to speak for themselves.1 Nothing is defended.
That's both its strength and its limit. Every entry is checkable against your own experience, which is more than most correspondence material offers. And nothing explains why any given rendering was chosen, so a reader who disagrees with an entry has nothing to argue with.
Tension left open. The table adds a zero row that isn't on the sefirotic Tree, and that row does structural work — the first sphere's rendering only makes sense against it. Whether the zero is Gray's addition or has traditional warrant is not said here, and the two possibilities give the table quite different standing.
🚩 PRACTITIONER SOURCE. 🚩 The table is attributed to William Gray via personal conversation, with no published source given. 🚩 The renderings are given without derivation, so the page reports a scheme it cannot justify. Building further doctrine on the individual word choices would be inventing on top of a caption.
Take the table at face value and it does what the surrounding material says should be done. It makes the glyph usable rather than storable, answering the complaint about correspondence tables being filing cabinets. Now look at what it actually is. A table — eleven rows, three columns, a set of correspondences between spheres and words. Structurally it is the same kind of object as the ones being complained about.
What separates them is where the entries can be checked, and the difference is real rather than rhetorical. A correspondence between Netzach and the planet Venus can only be verified against another book. A correspondence between Netzach and gaining amount of awareness can be verified against Tuesday. The first kind accumulates without limit because nothing constrains it; the second is constrained by whether the state occurs.
Which quietly supplies what the filing-cabinet complaint was missing. The objection was never to tables — it was to entries that cannot be wrong. And this table is the demonstration of the alternative, offered without ever saying so.
Koshas, Skandhas and Elements as One Ladder — eastern-spirituality.
Three traditions each enumerate five things — the Vedantic koshas, the Buddhist skandhas, the Taoist five elements. The claim is that they are enumerating the same five, mapped rung for rung. It's an ambitious identification, and it produces a single ladder out of three separate systems.
Gray's table is a different kind of mapping and the contrast is instructive. That one runs across traditions, claiming three vocabularies describe one reality. This one runs inside one tradition, translating its own vocabulary into plain psychological English. Nothing foreign is imported and no second system is claimed to match.
Which matters, because this same body of material is elsewhere severe about cross-tradition mapping — you may compare the chakras with the Tree, and calling the result doctrine is forbidden, since nobody inside either tradition ever made the link. By that standard the three-way ladder is exactly the operation being warned against, however illuminating.
And the difference gives a usable test for any correspondence set you're handed. Ask whether the mapping imports or translates. An import brings in a second system's entities and has to justify the pairing, which usually cannot be done without forcing. A translation stays inside one system and restates it in words that can be checked against experience. Its risk is much smaller too. A bad translation produces a state you cannot find, rather than a doctrine two traditions would both disown.
Sharpest implication. If Malchut is memory rather than matter, then the bottom of the diagram is not the physical world at all but the faculty that makes anything continuous — which would mean the descent everybody reads as a fall into density is a descent into persistence, and the thing that traps you is not the body but the fact that you remember.
Generative questions.
