The first of the ten Wizardly Trades is a research role, and its stated obligation is one no other trade carries. Arcanists test new magical formulation for their result, concentrating on their successes and advising on their failures to maximize the magical experience of the rest of the Wizarding Community.1

Now look for the failures. There are none. Four hundred pages, seventy-eight incantations, and not one entry says this was tried and it did not work. No trial is described anywhere. No negative result is recorded as a finding.
What the volume does contain, in unusual density, is limits. The finder will not help if things had been taken away by other people or stolen, and will not find living beings.2 The thief-finder will not tell the Wizard where the thief is if this one has gone farther than a hundred miles.3 The traveller's blessing only works for ground travel.4 The distance-sight charm is not an Augmentation Charm and will not find hidden objects.5 The momentum charm will not place an activity or provide momentum to a place which had never had it in the first place.6 The cooling charm will not cool a closed environment or a building.7 The remote protection will not work if the recipient of the spell is in another hemisphere.8
A corpus that mandates publishing failures contains no failures and an unusual number of exclusions — and the exclusions read exactly like the residue of failures somebody actually had.
Nobody writes this will not find living beings unless somebody tried to find a person. Nobody writes not across hemispheres unless somebody was far enough away for it to matter. Not in a building. Not past a hundred miles. Not on a place that never had customers. Each one is shaped like a specific disappointment, generalised into a rule and moved into the entry.
Set against that, the vault's own account of epistemic discipline says the reporting of what failed is what makes a filtering practice more than an opinion — and that the discipline is trainable rather than innate.9 Here the reporting obligation exists and the reports do not, while the thing the reports would have produced is present everywhere.
Falsifiable claim: the stated limits in this spellbook are a compressed failure record, and they will cluster where a naive practitioner is most likely to try first.
The prediction is specific. Sort every stated limit by what a beginner would plausibly attempt on day one — find a missing person, cool a hot room, protect somebody overseas, start a business that never had customers — and the limits should sit disproportionately on those attempts rather than being distributed evenly across the operations.
If the limits are instead evenly spread, or cluster on obscure operations, then they are doctrine rather than residue and the claim is dead.
Most practical corpora record their failures the same way — not as failures, but as the shape of the advice. A cookbook that says do not use a cold pan is a record of scorched food nobody wrote down. A manual's exclusions are usually the most honest part of it, because they are the only claims nobody had an incentive to make.
Which suggests a general reading move: when a source mandates publishing negative results and none appear, look at the constraints rather than concluding that nothing was tried.
Weakest point: the reasoning is comfortable and that is exactly why it should be suspected. Every one of these limits could equally be a genre convention — grimoires have always specified what a working does not cover, and a scribe copying a tradition would reproduce the exclusions without ever having attempted anything. The inherited-limit check is the one that would settle it, and it needs a second grimoire in the vault to run against.
