The Graeae and the Three Worms

The Three Channels Start Obstructed

The baseline claim is unremarkable and it is what everything on this page rests on.

The left, right and central channels are "at first somewhat obstructed" when you start, and eventually open with time and proper practice, along with the front and back.1

Somewhat obstructed — the hedge is honest. Not sealed, not absent. Partially blocked, in everybody, at the beginning.

Which is the ordinary condition rather than a pathology, and it sets the whole programme's task: not opening something closed, but clearing something partially occluded.

And the timeline is stated without a number: with time and proper practice. Both required, neither quantified.

Five channels are named — left, right, central, front and back — which is the working set, and the three that get personified are the first three.

Why those three and not all five is not stated, and the answer is available in the anatomy: the left, right and central are the vertical triad that everything else hangs off, while the front and back are the microcosmic circuit.

Which makes the three worms a claim about the core rather than about the circuit. See Hydraulic Loops, Not Mystical Anatomy.

Obstruction, Personified

The Taoist encoding is the page's central claim and it is a claim about a rhetorical habit.

Chinese Taoism once represented the obstructions in the three channels as "worms" or ugly spirits that thwarted cultivation efforts and left after sufficient meditation practice.1

Worms, or ugly spirits. Two registers for one referent — a parasite and a demon — and both are agents.

Which is the operative feature. An obstruction is a passive fact. A worm is a thing with a will, and personifying a blockage converts a plumbing problem into an adversary.

And the behaviour attributed matches the referent exactly. They thwart cultivation efforts — which is what a blockage does. And they leave after sufficient meditation practice — which is what a blockage does too, and is a strange thing for a spirit to do.

Leave is the giveaway. Not defeated, not expelled, not exorcised. They depart when the conditions no longer suit them, which is the behaviour of an accumulation rather than of an enemy.

Which makes the personification decorative rather than doctrinal — the tradition described a mechanical process in the vocabulary of agents, and the mechanics show through in what the agents are said to do.

And once represented is worth noting: the passage places this as a historical usage rather than a current one. A convention the tradition used and moved past. See The Dirty Chi Logs.

The Shared Eye

The Greek version's distinguishing feature is decoded, and it is the detail the whole identification turns on.

"In Greece this idea of the three worms (obstructions) within the channels became the three ugly old blind witches, or Graeae, who shared one eye (the Ajna chakra)."1

Three, and one eye between them. Which is the Graeae's only memorable property and the only structural feature available to match against anything.

And the match offered is the Ajna chakra — identified elsewhere as the third eye, between the eyebrows at the root of the nose.2

The correspondence is structural: three things converging on one point above them. Which is what the left, right and central channels do — they meet in the head, and the Ajna sits at the junction.

Two properties of the Graeae support the reading and one complicates it.

Three — matching the channel count.

Blind except for the one eye — which fits the obstruction claim. Three occluded channels and one point of vision between them is a reasonable figure for a system that is dark except where it converges.

And old and ugly — which matches the worms' ugly spirits register and carries the sense of something long-accumulated.

The complication is that the Graeae share the eye, passing it between them. Which the decode does not address — and passing suggests alternation, which is the described behaviour of the left and right channels, and would be a stronger reading than the one offered. [SPECULATIVE] — the alternation point is drawn here, not stated. See Two Plumes, Two Horns, Two Faces.

Analytical Case Study: A Transmission Claim, Not a Convergence Claim

The sentence's grammar makes a claim most of this material's cross-tradition readings do not, and it is worth isolating.

"In Greece this idea of the three worms (obstructions) within the channels became the three ugly old blind witches."1

Became. Which asserts derivation, not parallel discovery.

And that is a different and much stronger claim than the corpus usually makes. The standard move is convergence: two traditions describing one physical event, arriving at similar imagery independently — which requires no contact and is defended by the universality of the underlying experience.

Became requires contact. A Chinese doctrine travelling to Greece, being received, and being re-encoded as a local myth.

Three things follow.

It is checkable in principle. A transmission claim has a route, a period and a mechanism, and Greco-Chinese contact in the relevant period is a matter of historical record — thin, late relative to the Graeae, and mostly running the other way.

And it is unnecessary for the argument. The convergence reading would do the same work: three channels, obstructed, converging on a point, encoded twice. Nothing about the decode needs the Greek version to descend from the Chinese one.

But it is what the sentence says, and the material elsewhere is explicit that absence of a shared symbol is informative "unless the information was communicated as a shared technique" — which shows the transmission framing is deliberate rather than loose.

The weakness is that no route is offered. No period, no contact, no intermediary — and the Graeae are archaic Greek material, considerably older than any plausible transmission.

Which makes this the corpus's transmission claim at its most exposed, and the convergence reading available and stronger. [n=0 EVIDENCE] 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY on the Taoist doctrine. See Iconography as Attainment Record.

Implementation Workflow

There is nothing here to do and two things to hold.

Expect the three channels to be partly blocked and to clear slowly. Somewhat obstructed at first, eventually opening with time and proper practice. Which is the ordinary starting condition, not a diagnosis.

Do not personify the obstruction. The worms and the witches are encodings; treating a blockage as an adversary invites you to fight it, and fighting a channel is the named error everywhere in this material.

And do not work the Ajna. The third eye is the point the three converge on, and concentrating on a chakra without full-body preparation is the local-ignition hazard — at the most sensitive site in the head.

What the page actually recommends is what every page here recommends: general practice, no interference, and time.

One thing worth carrying from the encoding rather than from the decode. The worms leave after sufficient meditation practice — not after being confronted, and not after any operation aimed at them. Sufficient practice, and their departure is the outcome.

Which is the same instruction as the mattress, the crimped shoe and the strip of layers: stop supplying the condition and it resolves, and there is no move available that addresses it directly. See Never Guide the Chi.

Perseus Clears the Rest of the Head

The labour's sequence is decoded and the ordering is the informative part.

Perseus outsmarting them and killing Medusa as clearing the three channels and then the many other chi channels in the head; and Perseus eventually killing Cetus, which like Typhon possessed a monstrous body, meaning he triumphed in transforming his physical body.1

Three stages, in order.

The Graeae — the three channels. Medusa — the many other head channels. And Cetus — the physical body as a whole.

Which is an expanding sequence: the core triad, then the head's fine network, then the whole organism.

And it matches the ordering stated everywhere in this material. The three channels first, the fine head channels late, the crown last — and the body's complete transformation as the terminal item.

The Medusa reading gains something from her own description. A head of snakes is many separate things emerging from one head — which is a serviceable figure for the head's fine channel network, and better than the Graeae reading because the count is many rather than a specific number that has to match.

And the Typhon comparison places Cetus. Both possess monstrous bodies, and Typhon is elsewhere decoded as the unpurified channel bodyso Cetus is the same referent under a different name, and killing it is the body's transformation completed.

Which makes the Perseus cycle a compressed version of the whole Hercules sequence — and the material says as much: "it is the same story, same journey, same events, same chi phenomena, same spiritual gong-fu, same set of labors over and over again regardless of the spiritual school, sect, or religion."3 See Typhon Is the Unpurified Channel Body.

Same Story, Over and Over

The claim the whole decode project rests on is stated here in its strongest form.

"It is the same story, same journey, same events, same chi phenomena, same spiritual gong-fu, same set of labors over and over again regardless of the spiritual school, sect, or religion."3

*Six sames in one sentence*, and the escalation is deliberate.

Which is the universality thesis at maximum strength — not that traditions describe similar things, but that there is one sequence and every tradition's narrative is a rendering of it.

And it is the claim that makes the method possible. If there is one sequence, then a story's structure is decodable against it, and matching becomes a research procedure rather than a game.

It is also the claim that makes the method unfalsifiable. A reader convinced of one universal sequence will find it in any sufficiently rich narrative — and the corpus's own best moment is a refusal to identify a figure precisely because he could represent many things.

The stage placement given alongside is more modest and more checkable: once the sushumna opens, one can start to open the other extra energy meridians and attain the River Chariot rotation.3

A dependency, stated plainly, and it is the kind of claim the universality thesis is offered to support.

And one methodological note sits nearby that bears on all of this: Taoism uses nine, the largest single digit, to indicate many repetitions rather than a count.4

Which is the same disarming applied to a small number — and it means the counting method this material relies on has to be applied with a check on which numbers are inventories and which are conventions. Three may be either. See Hunting Is the Greek Word for Cultivation.

What Clearing the Three Buys

The dependency stated alongside the decode is the page's most usable technical content.

Once the sushumna opens, one can start to open the other extra energy meridians and attain the River Chariot rotation.3

A gate, and what lies past it.

Once the sushumna opens — the central of the three, and the one the whole triad exists around.

Then two things become available: the other extra energy meridians, and the rotation.

Which places the three channels at the bottom of a dependency tree rather than at the top of an achievement ladder. They are not a goal; they are what everything else requires.

And it explains the ordering of the Perseus sequence. The Graeae first — the three channels — then Medusa, the many head channels. The triad clears, and the many become reachable.

Two consequences for a practitioner.

Nothing above this is worth attending to until it clears. The extra meridians, the rotation, the head's fine network — all of them are downstream, and working them early is working at a gate that is shut.

And the three are cleared by general practice and nothing else. The obstructions leave after sufficient meditation practice — which is the only mechanism the tradition's own encoding supplies.

Which makes the practical content of this whole page a single instruction with a long timescale: the three channels are partly blocked in everyone, they clear with time and proper practice, and everything else waits on them.

And the encoding's honesty is worth noting one last time. The worms leave. The witches are outsmarted, not killed — Perseus takes the eye and trades it back. Neither figure is defeated by force, in either tradition. See The Hydraulics of the Two Rivers.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE] [SPECULATIVE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY on the Taoist worm doctrine — no text is cited, and no version of the Perseus material is cited either.

Tension — a transmission claim with no route. Became asserts derivation from a Chinese doctrine to a Greek myth, with no period, contact or mechanism given, and with the Greek material considerably older than any plausible transmission.

Tension — three is the count and nine is a convention. The same passage's neighbourhood notes that Taoism uses nine to mean many repetitions rather than a number. Which raises the question of whether three worms is a count of channels or a conventional small number, and the identification requires the first.

Tension — the shared eye is the distinguishing detail and the sharing is not decoded. The Graeae pass the eye between them. The reading takes the eye as the Ajna and does not address the passing.

Open question — what are the worms in mechanical terms? Obstructions is the gloss and nothing says what the material is — solidified chi, accumulated impurity, or something else named elsewhere.

Open question — why these three channels and not all five? Left, right and central are personified; front and back are named in the same sentence and not.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two accounts of how the same imagery appears in unrelated traditions run through this material and this page uses the less common one.

Convergence. The stages are universal, like puberty; everyone who gets far enough encounters the same phenomena; each culture encodes them in whatever it has; similar imagery across traditions is evidence of a shared referent and requires no contact.

And transmission. The idea became the Graeae; a shared symbol's absence is unlikely "unless the information was communicated as a shared technique"; the marma-point manuals made their way into Tibet; the Mikkyō chain is a documented relay.

Both are used and the choice is made case by case, with no stated rule.

And the two make opposite predictions about the same evidence. A shared image is convergence under the first and contact under the second; a missing image is a storytelling choice under the first and a break in transmission under the second.

The convergence is on what the imagery is for — a record of something physical, in both accounts, never decoration.

And the practical consequence is that a reader cannot use either as evidence for the other. A decode that assumes universality cannot then cite the resemblance as evidence of transmission, and one that assumes transmission cannot cite it as evidence of universality — which is the circularity this page's became walks into. See The Clashing Rocks and Lemnos and the Smell of Detoxification.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Projection Mechanics — psychology.

The worms and the witches are obstructions given faces, and the projection literature describes the general operation — which explains why a tradition would personify a blockage and what it costs.

The mechanism: you despise someone. Their narcissism, neediness, aggression, selfishness, cowardice. The intensity of your contempt is precise — you can name exactly what is wrong with them, and you are absolutely certain of what you are seeing.

You are probably seeing yourself.

Three things fall out.

Personifying an internal condition is the projection move performed deliberately. The obstruction is inside the practitioner; the worm is an ugly spirit that thwarts them — an agent, external, with intentions, opposed to their efforts. Which is exactly the structure of a projection, produced on purpose by a tradition rather than unconsciously by a person.

And the deliberate version has a real pedagogical use. An obstruction you cannot see, cannot locate and cannot address is demoralising. An adversary is comprehensible — it explains the resistance, it makes the practice a contest, and contests are motivating in a way that slow tissue clearance is not.

But the cost is the one the projection literature names. What is projected is not available to be worked on, because it has been placed outside. A practitioner fighting the worms is not addressing anything in themselves — and this material's own instruction is that the obstruction resolves only through general practice and non-interference.

The insight neither field produces alone: the encoding and the instruction pull against each other, and the tradition seems to have noticed. The worms leave after sufficient meditation practicewhich is the one behaviour that cannot be produced by fighting them, and is the tradition quietly correcting its own image from inside. The face is supplied to make the resistance bearable, and the departure clause is supplied to prevent anyone acting on the face.

The Live Edge

The unresolved thing is whether three is doing any work.

The identification runs on a count: three worms, three witches, three channels. And three is the weakest possible count to build on.

Two problems, and the page's own neighbourhood supplies both.

Three is the commonest small number in mythology. Three Fates, three Furies, three Gorgons, three Hesperides — the Graeae are themselves sisters of the Gorgons, who also number three. A Greek grouping of ugly female figures arriving in threes is a convention, not a datum.

And this material itself disarms small conventional numbers elsewhere. Nine means many repetitions in Taoism, seventy-two thousand means manywhich establishes that the tradition uses numbers conventionally and that the corpus knows it.

Three readings, and the difference is whether the page has any evidence at all.

Three is a count, and the correspondence to three channels is real.

Or three is convention on both sides — the Taoist worms being a conventional triad and the Greek witches being a conventional triad — in which case two conventions coincided and nothing was transmitted or encoded.

Or the shared eye is the real evidence and the three is incidental. Which is the strongest available reading: a single point of vision shared between multiple blind things is a specific and unusual structure, and it matches the Ajna claim without needing the count.

The stake is which detail the identification actually rests on, and the page leads with the count. The eye is the better evidence and gets one parenthesis — and its most distinctive feature, the passing, is not addressed at all.
