Pacing Matched to Rasa

NS XIX.43-44 and XIX.58-59 specify tempo (laya) matched to specific Sentiments: medium tempo for Comic and Erotic; slow for Pathetic; quick for Heroic, Furious, Marvellous, Odious, and Terrible.1

The framework's claim: speech-tempo, music-tempo, gesture-tempo all should match the rasa-content. A Pathetic scene delivered at quick tempo does not produce Pathetic effect; a Heroic scene delivered at slow tempo loses its energy.

What This Encodes

The framework treats tempo as a rasa-encoder. Different rasas require different tempos because the body produces and receives different emotions at different tempo-rates. The Pathetic body operates slowly (the lassitude, the dropped energy); the Heroic body operates with quick energy; the Comic and Erotic bodies operate at moderate pace.

Modern audio and performance content frequently mismatches tempo to content — comic content at slow tempo (defeating the laughter), Heroic content at slow tempo (defeating the action), Pathetic content at fast tempo (compressing the grief). The framework names what is happening.

Modern Content Creation Application

As scene-tempo diagnostic. Identify the rasa of the scene, then check that delivery-tempo matches. Mismatch produces the audience's body-confusion (the body cannot register the rasa because the tempo conflicts).

As music-scoring rule. Composers scoring video, film, podcast content should match musical-tempo to rasa-content. The framework provides the explicit mapping.

As voiceover/narration pacing. Narrators benefit from rasa-tempo matching. Pathetic content slow, Heroic content fast.

Tensions

Three-tempo-system simplicity: NS gives three tempos (slow, medium, fast). Modern music-theory has more granular tempo-vocabularies. The framework operates at the minimum working-resolution.

Within-scene tempo-variation: NS specifies tempo at the rasa-level. Within a scene, tempo may need to vary as the dominant rasa shifts. The framework does not address within-scene variation explicitly.
