A class of substances that assists the early stages of practice is described as turning harmful at a specific point, and the point is named.
Once the macrocosmic and microcosmic circulations are attained, supplements and medicines may interfere with progress already made — including ginseng, mushrooms, adaptogens and mineral formulations.1
Interfere with progress already made is the operative phrase. Not stop working. The claim is that the same substances undo rather than merely fail to help.
And two distinct harms are specified. Some clog the channels rather than lightening the body. Some over-stimulate sexual desire, so that the elixir and subsequent progress are lost.1
Which is a real distinction and worth keeping separate. The first is a direct physical objection — the substance is itself a load on a system whose whole business is clearing loads. The second is indirect: the substance does nothing to the channels and everything to the drive, and the loss happens through behaviour.
And the early half of the claim is stated just as plainly. Physical detoxification definitely helps progress at early stages, because nearly all chi energies initially go to dredging the channels.5
So the shape is a genuine reversal rather than a fading benefit. Helpful, then harmful, with a stated boundary between them. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.
The mechanisms deserve separating because they imply different precautions.
Clogging. A substance that adds material to a system whose entire early function is dredging the channels5 is working against the process by definition once the dredging is done. What was fuel becomes sediment.
Which explains why the reversal is tied to the circulations specifically. Before them, the system is clearing and can use assistance. After them, the system is circulating, and anything added to a circuit has to go round it.
Over-stimulation. The second mechanism operates entirely outside the channels. The substance raises desire, the desire is acted on, and the elixir is lost.1 The substance never touches the channels; the behaviour does.
Which makes the second harm avoidable in a way the first is not — it depends on a choice at the end of the chain, and the choice is the same one the practice already asks about. See How Each Essence Is Lost.
And it explains why exactly these substances are named. Ginseng, mushrooms, adaptogens and mineral formulations are the tonic class — substances taken for vitality, which is the same axis the practice is transforming. A substance that raises vitality is raising the thing at stake.
The same reversal is applied to a second category, with a different reason attached.
Colon and intestinal cleansing methods, including colonics and herbal remedies — "none of these are taken at later stages of the path because they cause you to lose too much energy."2
Lose too much energy is a third mechanism, distinct from both of the first two. Not clogging, not arousal — depletion.
Which changes the shape of the rule. A cleansing method removes material, and at the later stages the removal costs more than the material was costing. The early practitioner has surplus dirt and no reserve to protect; the later one has a reserve and less dirt.
And the reversal is now visible as a general principle rather than a fact about tonics. Interventions are priced against what the system currently has to spare. The same colonic that is a net gain when the channels are foul is a net loss when they are not.
Which gives the practitioner an actual heuristic, and it is the most portable thing here: ask what the intervention costs, and compare it to what is currently in surplus. Early on, dirt is the surplus and energy the scarcity is not yet acute. Later, energy is the thing being accumulated, and anything that spends it is expensive regardless of what it removes.
The boundary is given as an event rather than a duration, which makes it more usable than most of the timing claims in this material.
The reversal is keyed to the macrocosmic and microcosmic circulations being attained.1 Not to a year count, not to a stage number — to a specific gong-fu event.
And the event has its own precondition. The full circulations can only be initiated once the foot channels open.4 So the line falls after a region most practitioners cannot even detect. See The Orbit Requires Open Feet.
Which is the practical problem with an otherwise clean rule. The boundary is defined by an event the practitioner may not be able to confirm. A person who believes they have attained the circulations and has not is applying the late-stage restrictions early, giving up assistance they could have used.
And the reverse error is worse. A person who has attained them and does not realise it continues a regime the material says will undo the attainment.
One further constraint bounds how much the substances could ever have offered. Physical methods never open the central channel or ignite the River Chariot rotation; only after the chi starts rotating do all the channels unwind and open.3 So nothing in the tonic class was ever going to produce the main event — the assistance was always to the dredging, never to the ignition.
Which reframes the whole reversal as smaller than it sounds. What is being given up at the boundary is help with the preliminary work, at the point where the preliminary work is finished.
The structure of the claim is unusual enough to be worth isolating, because it is the kind of claim that is easy to state and hard to hold.
An ordinary tolerance claim says the benefit shrinks. This one says the sign flips — the same substance, the same dose, producing help before a boundary and harm after it.15
Which is a strong form, and it is not intrinsically implausible: interventions whose value depends on the state of the system are common, and an intervention that supplies what is scarce becomes a burden once the scarcity is relieved.
The material offers the mechanism for exactly that. Early: nearly all chi goes to dredging, so assistance to dredging is assistance.5 Late: the channels are dredged and circulating, so added material is load and removal is depletion.12 The reversal follows from the mechanism rather than being asserted alongside it.
What is missing is any observation of the flip. No case is given of a practitioner who continued a regime past the boundary and lost ground — and that is the observation the claim exists to explain. [LOW CONFIDENCE] on the reversal as a reported event, as opposed to a derived expectation.
And a competing account is available and unaddressed. Masters are described elsewhere as harmonising the body through meditation and also using herbal and other medicines6 — without a stage qualification. Either those masters were below the boundary, or the boundary is narrower than stated.
Which is where the case lands. The rule is coherent, the mechanism is stated, the confirming observation is absent and a counter-instance sits in the same account unreconciled.
1. Use physical detoxification early, deliberately. It is described as definitely helping while nearly all chi is going to dredging.5 This is one of the few unambiguous green lights in the material.
2. Know which event the boundary is. The circulations attained1 — not a duration, not a feeling. If you cannot say whether you have attained them, you cannot locate yourself on this rule.
3. Do not use the restriction as a proxy for attainment. Adopting late-stage austerity does not place you at a late stage. The regime does not confer the boundary it presumes.
4. Drop the tonic class at the boundary, not before. Ginseng, mushrooms, adaptogens, mineral formulations.1 The stated harms are clogging and over-arousal, so the second is worth watching for even before the boundary.
5. Drop the cleansing methods at the boundary too, for a different reason — energy cost, not clogging.2 Two categories, two mechanisms, one boundary.
6. Do not expect any substance to do the main work at any stage. No chemical, herb, drug, hormone, vitamin, mineral or modality helps attain samadhi, and none will be invented.9 The whole substance question is about the preliminaries.
7. Weigh the annual-detox recommendation against the boundary rule yourself. Detoxing once or twice a year is urged for health reasons against modern chemical load,8 and that recommendation is not stage-qualified. The two rules meet here and the material does not reconcile them.
8. Do not self-experiment. The account itself records that many individuals have died from ingesting the wrong substances, especially mixed with excessive alcohol or sexual dissipation.11 The vault advises against self-experimentation and endorses no substance named on this page.
The second harm mechanism connects to a much larger claim, and the claim is recorded here without endorsement.
At higher stages, losing jing is said to result in damage to the kidneys, eyes, waist channel and knees, with advanced dissipation said to lead to death. "This is not theory but actual fact."7
Recorded as what the source asserts. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE [LOW CONFIDENCE] No vault endorsement; nothing here attaches to any reader.
The reason it belongs on this page is the linkage. The over-stimulation harm is only a harm because of this clause — a substance that raises desire is dangerous only if acting on the desire costs what the clause says it costs.
And the evidential move attached is worth naming. Advanced cultivators are said to feel the harm and thereby prove the sages' warnings to themselves.7 Which makes the confirmation internal and unavailable to anyone else — the practitioner who has not reached the stage cannot check it, and the one who has is described as already convinced.
One qualification is stated. The injunction is described as less severe for women because their bodies are different.7 Recorded as stated; no mechanism is given. See Women's Cultivation Gong-Fu.
What a practitioner can take from this without accepting the severity claim is the structural point: the substances named are flagged for what they make you do, not for what they are.
The account's own model for how substance knowledge was acquired is stated, and it carries a warning inside it.
Medicine Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are described as testing medicines on their own bodies for first-hand effect — "proper when care is taken" — because they could not rely on reading research studies.11
Which is an honest account of where this kind of knowledge comes from. Pre-modern pharmacological knowledge was built by self-administration, and the material does not pretend otherwise.
And the cost is stated in the same breath. Many individuals have died from ingesting the wrong substances, especially mixed with excessive alcohol or sexual dissipation.11
Which is the part that should govern how this page is used. The method that produced the knowledge is not a method available to the reader, and the account itself supplies the death rate as the reason.
The vault's position is explicit: recorded as the source's account; self-experimentation is advised against.
And the closing constraint bounds the whole subject. No substance of any kind attains samadhi, and none will be invented.9 Which means the entire risk described here is being taken for the preliminaries — a bad trade at any stage, and the clearest reason to leave the question alone. See You Cannot Buy the Path.
🚩 SINGLE SOURCE [PRACTITIONER SOURCE] — the reversal, the boundary and the harm mechanisms all come from one account.
[LOW CONFIDENCE] — the jing-loss damage claims,7 and the reversal as a reported event rather than a derived expectation.
Tension within the subject. Annual detoxification is urged for health reasons with no stage qualification8 while cleansing methods are said to be dropped at later stages for energy cost.2 A later-stage practitioner is given both instructions and no way to choose.
Tension with the masters. Masters are described using herbal and other medicines alongside meditation,6 with no indication that they were below the boundary. Unreconciled in the range read.
Open question. The boundary is an event most practitioners cannot confirm.14 No secondary marker is given — nothing that would let someone verify which side of it they are on. This is the single largest practical gap on the page.
Convergent: the substance claims are consistent in their limit — nothing attains samadhi, nothing ever will,9 and every benefit described is to the preliminary work.35
Divergent: the health-detox recommendation8 and the later-stage prohibition2 point opposite ways, and the masters' documented use of medicines6 sits against the boundary rule. All three are preserved. See Nothing but Chi Attains Samadhi.
The Remedy Is the Cause of the Disease — the behavioral-mechanics case describes interventions that generate the condition they were adopted to treat, with the sufferer's confidence in the remedy rising precisely as the remedy's damage accumulates. The structural parallel is exact and the difference is the interesting part. In the tactical case the reversal is hidden — nothing marks the point where the remedy turned, which is why the pattern runs for years. Here the reversal is not only visible but dated: it is keyed to a named event, the circulations attaining.1 Which yields the discriminator neither domain supplies alone: a reversal with a stated boundary is a manageable rule, and a reversal without one is a trap — and this page's actual weakness is not the reversal claim but the fact that its boundary is unobservable to the person who has to apply it.4 A dated reversal you cannot date is behaviourally identical to an undated one.
The rule is coherent and the confirming observation is missing. No case of a practitioner losing ground by continuing a regime past the boundary is offered anywhere in the range read — which means the reversal is derived from the mechanism rather than reported from practice.
The live edge is the boundary marker. A rule keyed to an event the practitioner cannot confirm is unusable in the direction that matters most, because the expensive error is the one where you have crossed the line and do not know it. A secondary sign — anything that co-occurs with the circulations and is easier to detect — would convert this from an interesting structural claim into an applicable one.
