When the Waters Were Changed

He Did Everything Right and Drank Anyway

Idries Shah's Sufi teaching story, printed complete as a marginal to Law 38.

Khidr warns mankind that on a certain date all unhoarded water will vanish and be replaced with different water that will drive men mad. One man listens, stores water, and retreats to a secure place.

The date comes. The streams stop, the wells go dry, the falls begin again, and he descends.

He found that they were thinking and talking in an entirely different way from before; yet they had no memory of what had happened, nor of having been warned. When he tried to talk to them, he realized that they thought that he was mad, and they showed hostility or compassion, not understanding.1

He returns to his cave and drinks his own water daily. And then:

Finally, however, he took the decision to drink the new water because he could not bear the loneliness of living, behaving and thinking in a different way from everyone else. He drank the new water, and became like the rest. Then he forgot all about his own store of special water, and his fellows began to look upon him as a madman who had miraculously been restored to sanity.2

The Marginal Refutes the Law It Is Printed In

This is the sharpest thing in Cluster K and Greene prints it without comment.

The man executes Law 38's strategy perfectly. He hears the warning, he prepares, he keeps his own water, he retreats, he conceals — and when he speaks and is misread, he withdraws rather than persisting.

He does not fail through carelessness, exposure, or bad technique. He fails on a variable the chapter never prices: how long a person can sustain it.

Because he could not bear the loneliness.

Law 38's one mention of this is a clauseshare your originality only with tolerant friendsand the fable is the demonstration that the clause is the whole strategy. Campanella had readers. The Marranos had each other. This man had a cave, and a cave is a countdown.

Hostility or Compassion, Not Understanding

The three-term list is the most precise observation in the fable.

Hostility and compassion look opposite and are the same operation: both are responses to a person who has been classified as unwell, and neither requires engaging with what he said.

Compassion Is the More Complete Defeat

Compassion is the more complete defeat. ⚠ Hostility at least registers the content as a threat. Compassion has already decided the content is a symptom — it is warm, it is unanswerable, and there is no version of arguing your way out of being pitied.

Which is a mechanism Law 38 needs and does not have. The chapter says unconventional conduct provokes hostility. The fable says the more common and more final response is being explained away, and it is not adversarial at all.

He Forgot the Store

Then he forgot all about his own store of special water.

That sentence is why the fable is not merely sad, and Greene's chapter has no category for it.

Law 38 promises that outward conformity preserves inner freedomkeep your differences in your thoughts and not in your fleece, maintaining their inner freedom and beliefs, the thoughts they want to have.

The fable says the inside does not hold. The man does not perform assimilation while privately retaining what he knew. He drinks, and the knowledge goes.

Which is the claim the whole law depends on and cannot support: ⚠ that the mask and the face stay separable. Campanella wrote his beliefs down, which may be the only reason his survived; the Marranos had a community to hold theirs. A person concealing alone has nothing external holding the thing they are concealing, and the fable says what happens then.

Analytical Case Study: The Final Sentence Is the Cruellest

His fellows began to look upon him as a madman who had miraculously been restored to sanity.

The community's account of the episode is now the exact inverse of the truth, and — the part that matters — he agrees with it.

There is no residue. No private reservation, no knowing look, no coded remark to a sympathiser. ⚠ The record has been rewritten inside the only person who could have contested it.

And this closes the fable's argument about the law. Law 38's protection is that you know what you really think. ⚠ The fable's answer is that the knowing is itself maintained by something, and if you dismantle the maintenance to survive, the knowing goes with it — and you will not notice, because the noticing was the thing that went.

🚩 Document, Don't Endorse

⚠ 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY · 🚩 TRANSLATION DISTORTION — attributed to Idries Shah, Tales of the Dervishes, 1967, with no page and no indication of the story's provenance within the tradition.

🚩 ⚠ Idries Shah's presentation of Sufi material is contested. He is a twentieth-century popularising author whose sourcing and claims to lineage have been questioned in the scholarship, and his collections mix traditional material with his own framing. The corpus should record this as a teaching story as Shah presents it, not as an attested classical Sufi text. [PLAUSIBLE — needs corroboration] on provenance.

🚩 Khidr (al-Khiḍr) is a substantial figure in Islamic tradition, associated with the Moses narrative in Sūrat al-Kahf. ⚠ Greene reproduces "the teacher of Moses" without any of that context, and the corpus should not carry the epithet as a doctrinal statement.

🚩 Idries Shah's second appearance in the build (Law 36 supplied "kick him—he'll forgive you"), ⚠ and both times he is used as an aphorist rather than as a tradition.

Implementation Workflow

You hold something — a judgement, a standard, a way of seeing — that the people around you no longer share, and you have decided to keep quiet about it.

Understand what you are actually running.Concealment is not a stable state, it is a consumable, and the fable identifies the consumable precisely: the capacity to be the only one. It depletes, it depletes faster under compassion than under hostility, and nothing in the concealment itself replenishes it.

So the operative question is not can I keep this hidden but what is holding it up. ⚠ Three things do the work in this chapter's cases and none of them is willpower: a readership (Campanella), a community (the Marranos), a written record (both). A person with none of the three is on the fable's schedule.

Write it down. The cheapest available substitute for a community is an artefact. Atheism Conquered survived because it existed outside its author; the man's store of water existed only as his own memory of having stored it, and memory is what the new water took.

And watch for compassion specifically. ⚠ When people stop arguing with you and start being kind about it, the classification has already happened and no further speech will reverse it. That is the point to stop spending speech and start spending on the outlet.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Strongest evidence. A complete teaching story with a precise causal sequence, a named failure variable (loneliness rather than exposure), a three-term observation about reception (hostility or compassion, not understanding), and a final state in which the concealed content is lost rather than merely hidden.

Tension — the marginal contradicts the law it decorates, and Greene prints it without comment.

Tension — Law 38 promises that inner freedom survives outward conformity, and the fable's whole point is that it does not.

🚩 [POPULAR SOURCE] for the placement · 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY · 🚩 TRANSLATION DISTORTION — Idries Shah, 1967, no page, contested provenance. 🚩 [PLAUSIBLE — needs corroboration] — treat as a teaching story as Shah presents it, not as an attested classical text.

Open questions. Is the fable about conformity or about revelation? ⚠ Read as Sufi teaching material it is plausibly about the impossibility of communicating an attained state to those without it, and the conformity reading is Greene's placement rather than the story's own frame. The two readings produce different lessons — one about social strategy, one about the limits of transmission — and the corpus should hold both rather than adopting the chapter's.

Author Tensions & Convergences

This is the eleventh instance of the marginals-outargue-the-chapter finding and the most direct: it does not supply a missing mechanism, it falsifies the law's central promise.

Against Campanella and the Marranos the three cases in one chapter make the finding stateable: ⚠ concealment is sustainable exactly as long as there is somewhere it stops. Readers, a community, a caveand the chapter treats all three as the same strategy successfully executed.

⚠ And against Law 35's long time there is a direct structural rhyme the corpus should record. That page found that long time is purchased — Ieyasu had a domain, Fouché had money, and the chapter presented patience as temperament. This fable makes the same correction to concealment: it is purchased too, and the currency is company. Two laws apart, the same defect — a strategy priced as a disposition.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Clinical psychology — the classification that ends the conversation. Minority Identity and Shame Scenes examines what happens when an individual's account of their own experience is reinterpreted by the surrounding group as a property of the individual rather than as information about the world.

Hostility or compassion, not understanding.

The insight neither produces alone: the fable observes the response and does not explain why compassion is worse. ⚠ The reinterpretation frame supplies it: hostility disputes your claim and compassion disputes your standing to make claims — the first leaves the content in play and the second removes the speaker from the category of people whose statements are evidence. Which is unanswerable by construction, because any further insistence confirms the diagnosis. ⚠ And that yields the general form: the most complete way to neutralise a dissenting account is not to argue with it but to explain the person who is giving it — and the mechanism runs on sympathy, requires no malice, and is therefore very hard to name while it is happening.

Knowledge management — the belief with no external substrate. Taste, Judgment, Labor distinguishes capacities that live in a person from those that have been externalised into artefacts and systems, and treats the externalisation as what makes a capacity durable and transmissible.

The man's store of water existed only in his own memory of having stored it.

What the pairing produces: Law 38 assumes the inner life is a safe deposit — hide the belief and it keeps. ⚠ The externalisation frame says an unexpressed conviction has no substrate, and a capacity with no substrate is maintained only by continuous private use, which is the thing concealment interferes with. Campanella's beliefs survived because he wrote a book; the Marranos' survived because they taught children; the man's did not survive because it was only ever his. ⚠ Which is the practical instruction the chapter's keep your differences in your thoughts actively prevents: thoughts are the least durable place to keep anything. If concealment is genuinely necessary, the priority is not hiding the belief better but giving it somewhere to exist that is not you — a notebook, a correspondent, a practice, something that will still be holding it when you have drunk the water.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The man executes Law 38 perfectly and fails on a variable the chapter never pricesbecause he could not bear the loneliness. Concealment is a consumable, not a state, and nothing inside it replenishes. And the inside does not hold: he does not privately retain what he knew, he forgets the store, which falsifies the law's central promise that the mask and the face stay separable. ⚠ The final sentence is the proof — the community's inverted account is now his own, and there is nobody left who could contest it.

Generative questions.

  • Compassion is the more complete defeat — hostility disputes your claim and compassion disputes your standing to make claims, which is unanswerable because insisting confirms it. Is being explained away the more common fate than being opposed?
  • Thoughts are the least durable place to keep anything. If concealment is necessary, is the priority giving the belief a substrate outside yourself rather than hiding it better?
  • Read as Sufi material this may be about the impossibility of transmitting an attained state, and the conformity reading is Greene's placement. Which frame does the story belong to?
