The only time it is worth standing out is when you already stand out—when you have achieved an unshakable position of power, and can display your difference from others as a sign of the distance between you.1
Then three cases, and — ⚠ uniquely in this stretch — three different outcomes.
It worked. *"As president of the United States, Lyndon Johnson would sometimes hold meetings while he sat on the toilet. Since no one else either could or would claim such a 'privilege,' Johnson was showing people that he did not have to observe the protocols and niceties of others."*2
It backfired. *"The Roman emperor Caligula played the same game: He would wear a woman's negligee, or a bathrobe, to receive important visitors. He even went so far as to have his horse elected consul. But it backfired, for the people hated Caligula, and his gestures eventually brought his overthrow."*3
It worked and then destroyed him. *"Oscar Wilde achieved considerable social power on this foundation… when he gave public readings his audiences not only expected him to insult them but welcomed it. We notice, however, that his eccentric role eventually destroyed him."*4

Read as advice this is useless — it tells you to have the thing you were trying to get.
Read as a description it is exact. ⚠ Conspicuous difference is not a route to power; it is something power can be spent on. Johnson's behaviour was not how he became president — it is what being president let him do.
And that makes it a consumption good rather than an investment, which is the distinction the law's main body never draws. ⚠ Law 38 warns against difference as if it were always a bid for status. The Reversal says that above a threshold it is a purchase, and the thing purchased is a demonstration that the rules are optional for you.
⚠ Both are the same act — a sovereign demonstrating exemption — and the chapter gives the outcomes without the variable.

Reversibility. ⚠ Johnson's toilet meetings were an imposition on individuals in a room. Caligula's consul horse was an institutional act — it required the Senate's participation and it altered the office. The first can be endured; the second has to be accepted by the body it degrades.
And the audience. ⚠ Johnson's target was subordinates who needed something from him. *Caligula's was "the people", who did not* — Greene's own sentence says the people hated Caligula. An exemption performed at people who depend on you is absorbed; performed at people who do not, it accumulates.
⚠ So the derivable rule the chapter does not state: display your exemption only to those whose position obliges them to receive it. Johnson's staff had to stay in the room and Rome did not.

Wilde is not a failure case in the way Caligula is. The technique worked — considerable social power, audiences who welcomed the insults. And it destroyed him anyway.

Johnson stopped being president and stopped holding those meetings. ⚠ Wilde's difference was not a privilege attached to an office — it was his position, and a position built on being the person who defies the conventions has no exit that does not forfeit the standing.
And Greene supplies the condition and buries it:
remember that he possessed an unusual genius: Without his gift to amuse and delight, his barbs would simply have offended people.5

So the sequence is: conform to acquire the position, then display difference from inside it. ⚠ Which is the same staged structure the Keys proposed for persuasion — once they have established themselves in a position of power, they can try to convince a wider circle.
⚠ And it has the same missing piece: no marker for the stage change. An unshakable position of power is not observable from inside, and Caligula plainly believed he had one.
You have some standing and you are wondering whether you can stop performing conformity.
Ask whether your difference would be a bid or a purchase. ⚠ Below the threshold it reads as a claim about your level and gets priced as one. Above it, it reads as a report of a level already established. The same act, two readings, and the reading is set by the position and not by the act.
Display exemption only to people obliged to receive it. ⚠ Johnson's staff had to stay in the room and Rome did not. An exemption performed at people with no dependency on you accumulates as grievance, and there is no mechanism converting it back.
Avoid institutional acts. ⚠ A personal imposition is endured; an act that requires an institution to participate in its own degradation has to be accepted by the body it degrades, and that body has a memory and a procedure.
And check what renews your licence. ⚠ This is Wilde's lesson and it is the one worth carrying. If your exemption rests on an office, it ends when the office does and you can put it down. If it rests on being good every time, it is not a position — it is a performance with no retirement, and without his gift to amuse and delight, his barbs would simply have offended people.
Strongest evidence. Three cases with three distinct outcomes — worked, backfired, worked-then-destroyed — which is more evidential range than any other Reversal in the build, plus an explicitly stated condition (an unshakable position) and a stated qualifier on the Wilde case.

Open questions. Is "an unshakable position of power" ever identifiable from inside? ⚠ Caligula was emperor, which is as unshakable as the ancient world offered, and it was not enough. The Reversal's condition may be knowable only retrospectively — in which case it is the same defect the corpus has recorded on every staged strategy in this stretch, and the safest reading is that the threshold does not exist as a decision point.
⚠ This is a fourth Reversal shape and the best-evidenced in the build. The corpus's running tally: character-prescription (Laws 31–34), refusal of the form (Laws 35, 37), boundary-plus-case-plus-instruction (Law 36), and now boundary-plus-three-outcomes (Law 38).

The Reversal identifies the point at which the performance changes function.
The insight neither produces alone: the performance frame treats every status display as constitutive — you act powerful and become so. ⚠ The Reversal says that above a threshold the same display stops being constitutive and becomes expressive: Johnson's toilet meetings did not make him president and could not have.
