The chalice holds liquid, the sword has an edge, the wand is a length of wood. The pentacle is a flat disc with inscriptions, heavenly and divine names all over it, and it's the only one of the four whose surface is the point. The answer runs through a five-pointed star and ends somewhere unexpected. The fifth point of that star is the quintessence the alchemists spent centuries hunting, and the quintessence turns out to be the Voice.1 Which is why the pentacle carries writing: it is the weapon of the spoken word, made to hold still.
The star comes first, and its origin is astronomical rather than symbolic. The symmetrical design of the pentacle was originally the sign of a star — a five-pointed star, to be exact. The importance of that dates back thousands of years, to when the first astrologers noticed that the planet Venus traced an exact five-pointed star in the heavens as it moved through the seasons of the year.2
And the meaning attached is agricultural. That tracing marks a cycle of life and death, growth, development, and the start and end of a full year of harvest. In practical terms, Venus's movement traces the beginning of the planting, the keeping of the crops and the collecting of the harvest — all timed by its celestial chronometry. Which is where the associations come from: life, providence, magic, prosperity, abundance and bountiful harvest, and through those, the Earth element. Note the direction of the derivation. The pentacle isn't an earth symbol that happens to look like a star. It's a star that turned out to schedule the farming year, and that is what makes it earth.
The oddity of that gets acknowledged: contrary to the Earth element it represents, its mystery is born high beyond the vaults of the heavens. An earth symbol whose origin is in the sky.
The second mystery is the quintessence, and the story is told as a chase. For years, the alchemists invested precious time trying to find the wonderful and supremely sublime substance — the one that transmutes one element into another, brings complete health, confers immortality, and puts the nature and celestial spirits at the command of the alchemist.3 They never found it. It eluded them all, finding its hiding place perched on top of the symbol of the five-pointed star. The geometry does the explaining. The star's four lower points harbour the four elemental powers — water, earth, air and fire — while its uppermost fifth point signifies the quintessence. So the thing being hunted was drawn on every seal, every talisman and every grimoire page, at the top of a shape everybody used, keeping its secret safe from those who sought it with less than virtuous intentions.
Then the identification, and it's reached by counting rather than asserted. The four primary elements are essences of the divine, understood as the first, second, third and fourth essences of the Creator. And the essences are the steps the Divine followed while creating the universe. So: just after the initial flight of Thought there was a Sound.4
That sound is the fifth element and the quintessence — given as a chain: the sound that becomes Light, and the Light that is the Voice of God.
Which produces the conclusion the whole page turns on. The Pentacle's initiatory mystery is that of the Holy Voice which pronounces the magical words of creation — and that is why most pentacles are covered in inscriptions and divine names, as reminders of the hidden qualities of words and the agencies they implicitly obey. Follow what that argument actually does. It takes an alchemical quest for a substance and answers it with something that isn't a substance at all. The alchemists were looking for a fifth material — a thing you could hold, distil, or add to a vessel — and the answer given is a sound. A search for matter, resolved as speech — which is consistent with a system where the crossing from thought to physical is made by an uttered word, and where a word is a number that resolves to a code.
It also explains the pentacle's position among the four weapons. The chalice carries Anima, the sword carries Mind, the wand carries Spirit — three essences from three dimensions. The pentacle carries the Word, which was the odd fourth in that derivation. Here it gets its account: the Word is the fifth element, and the pentacle is where it is written down.
Worth sitting with how odd that resolution is. The alchemists wanted a fifth material — something you could hold, distil, or add to a vessel — and what they are given is speech. In a system of substances the answer would be unintelligible; here it is the obvious one.
The historical uses given are three, and they're more varied than the doctrine alone would predict. Grimoires abound with the mystifying forms of pentacles, talismans and amulets. The ancient Kabbalists employed pentacles of magical power called seals, to ward off evil spirits and to accrue the favour of celestials and divine entities. And in Medieval Astrology and Magic, pentacles were used by wizards and astrologers both to coerce the forces of planets and stars, minimising their afflictions and maximising their favourable aspects toward people.5
Three registers there — warding, favour-seeking, and coercion. The last is the interesting one, because coerce is a strong verb for a system that elsewhere describes cooperation with celestials and warns against breaking free will. Planets, apparently, get compelled.
A footnote distinguishes the three objects a reader would otherwise conflate. A talisman is an object enchanted to bring about a magical effect. An amulet is an object believed to have protective qualities. A pentacle is a magical device prepared by the wizard.6 So the pentacle is the one defined by who made it rather than by what it does.
Warding, favour-seeking and coercion are three quite different relationships with a celestial power, and only the third sits awkwardly. Everywhere else this curriculum describes cooperation with celestials, arriving helpful, disposed by the Sun's order toward duty — and here planets get compelled. Nothing addresses whether the free-will restriction that governs people and animals reaches as far as a planet.
The practical rule for pentacles follows from everything above, and it separates them from the other three weapons. A chalice, a sword and a wand are made once, consecrated once, and used for many operations. A pentacle is not. Because it is the Word made to hold still, and because each operation uses different names, each pentacle carries operation-specific names and must be drawn individually.
That means the work is writing. Consecrated inks, parchment, and a hand that forms the letters — the pentacle is the only weapon where the wizard's own inscription is the instrument rather than the decoration. And the accuracy standard is the one that governs spoken names: a name written wrongly is a different name, for the same reason a name pronounced wrongly is a different code.
What you're building, on this account, is a sound that stays put. The Voice does its work and stops; the pentacle keeps the same names present on a surface for as long as the ink lasts.

Follow the Venus derivation and the pentacle is an agricultural calendar. Its meanings are life, harvest, providence and abundance, and it belongs to Earth because a planet's motion happens to schedule the planting year. Follow the quintessence derivation and it is the weapon of the Voice — the fifth element, the sound that becomes Light, the Holy Voice pronouncing the words of creation, written down.
Those are two different objects sharing one shape. The first is a seasonal instrument tied to growth; the second is speech made permanent. And the practical consequence differs: on the first reading a pentacle's power would follow the year and the crops; on the second it follows the accuracy of what is written on it. The section holds both and reconciles neither.
Aku as Words of Power — One Word, Two Senses — Both traditions end up locating real power in words, and both have to answer what happens when the word stops being spoken. The Akan-Kemetic material keeps the word in the mouth: aku names both the perceiving faculty and the uttered formula, and the power lives in the act.
This system does something different with it. The Word is the fifth element, and the pentacle is what happens when you fix it to a surface — the Voice, held still, in consecrated ink on parchment.
The comparison exposes what writing buys and what it costs, and neither corpus states it. A spoken formula requires a speaker present, so its power is bounded by attention and breath. A written one persists without anybody there, which is why the same object can be a seal that wards a house for months — and why a pentacle has to be drawn individually for each operation, since a permanent utterance aimed at the wrong thing is a wrong utterance that keeps going. One tradition's word ends when the speaker stops; the other's ends when the ink does.
Sharpest implication. The quintessence the alchemists hunted for centuries is answered here as a sound — the fifth essence after Thought, the sound that becomes Light, the Voice of God. So the pentacle is not a disc with words on it. It is the Word itself, written down, which is why it is the one weapon whose surface carries the operation.
