Law 43 recommends attunement in eight different places and tells you how to do it once.
To find the key that will motivate them, first get them to open up. The more they talk, the more they reveal about their likes and dislikes—the handles and levers to move them with.1

They argue, boast, and make a show of their power. They may not know it but they are secretly creating an enemy, a resister, because there is no more infuriating feeling than having your individuality ignored, your own psychology unacknowledged. It makes you feel lifeless and resentful.2

⚠ The target is not deceived about the attention. Somebody genuinely is listening. The silence is real, the questions are real, and the experience of finally being registered is not a trick — it is the actual thing, delivered.

Never clumsily assume that the tactic that worked on one person will necessarily work on another. And to accomplish this you need to deal with their individual psychologies.1

A symbolic gesture can be performed by someone in no hardship. ⚠ A jolt can be administered by someone who has not met you. An appeal to mortality and belonging can be written once and delivered to thousands.
Listening cannot be performed in the absence of the thing it performs. ⚠ You cannot get someone to open up without actually being quiet, actually being present, and actually receiving what they say — because the target controls the disclosure and will stop if the reception fails.
⚠ Which means the technique has an unusual property: running it produces the real thing as a by-product. The person genuinely is attended to. The information genuinely is understood. Whatever the motive, the interaction that occurred is the interaction it appeared to be.
⚠ And that yields the corpus's reading of why this passage sits so oddly in its chapter. Law 43's other techniques all separate the appearance from the substance — that is what makes them techniques. ⚠ This one collapses the two, and the chapter can only make it fit by specifying in advance what the substance will later be used for.
⚠ The corpus should record the consequence, which is unusually cheerful for this book. The method survives the removal of the motive. Strip handles and levers and leeway to deceive and what remains — stop talking, ask, receive — is not a diminished version of the technique. It is the same technique, with better outcomes, and no exposure.
Stop transmitting. ⚠ The passage's diagnosis is that people meet someone new and talk about themselves. The correction is not a script or a question list — it is the decision not to fill the silence, and it is the whole of the method.
Ask what you do not already have a use for. ⚠ The extractive version asks questions aimed at handles, and it is detectable over time because the questions have a shape. Questions with no destination produce more, and produce it faster, because the target is not being funnelled.
Do not assume the last person's key fits. ⚠ Never clumsily assume that the tactic that worked on one person will necessarily work on another is the chapter's own warning against the chapter's own generic levers. If your approach did not change between the last two people, you were not attuning to either.
⚠ And notice that you cannot fake this one. The target controls the disclosure and stops when the reception fails — so there is no version where you appear to listen and get the information. ⚠ Which is worth knowing from both sides: it means the technique is safe to run honestly, and it means the person listening to you is, at minimum, actually listening.

The corpus's reading is that funnel-shaped questions have a signature, and nothing here tests it. ⚠ And is there a case in Law 43 of the individual prong being used? The chapter's one instance is Liang's fabrication about a general's wife, which required one fact, not an understanding.
⚠ This passage supplies the chapter's real theory of resentment and it is not the Judgment's. Inattention, not coercion. ⚠ And it is the theory the Transgression demonstrates: she coerced nobody and was hated for not attending. The Judgment's version fits the Observance and this one fits the Transgression, and the chapter never notices it is running two.

The tips are mostly correctives — what most operators do wrong, and the disciplined alternative.
First get them to open up. The more they talk, the more they reveal.
The insight neither produces alone: ⚠ Greene supplies the stance and calls it a method, and the sales frame shows that the stance is the easy part. Everyone agrees they should listen more; almost nobody does, and the failure happens at specific identifiable moments — the pause you fill, the answer you complete, the objection you rebut before it finishes. ⚠ Which locates the gap between Greene's diagnosis and any actual change in behaviour. He explains why people transmit — eager to impose their own willpower — and offers nothing for the two seconds in which the transmitting happens. ⚠ And it identifies what the corrective form has to look like: not a resolution but a set of situational rules attached to the moments where the discipline predictably fails. The corpus should record that this is the same shape as the defence against isolation — a rule beats a judgement, because the judgement is what the situation disables.
Psychology — the same silence, the opposite motive. Holding the Image of Another's Wholeness records a woman across a dinner table from a man who has made a mess of his life and who asks her, honestly, why she is still interested. She takes his hand and says: I know… but I can see your wholeness. The attention is directed at what the person could be, and it is held on their behalf rather than for any use.

What the pairing produces: ⚠ the two passages describe the identical behaviour — sustained attention to a particular person — and differ only in what the attention is for, and the corpus should be exact about what that difference does and does not change. ⚠ It does not change the recipient's experience in the moment. Both are genuinely being seen. What it changes is the direction the accumulated knowledge points: toward the person's own becoming, or toward a set of controls. ⚠ And that is invisible at the time and unmistakable in retrospect — which is why the injury of discovering the extractive version is so much worse than ordinary betrayal.
