⚠ And the stated reason is not moral. If I alone should drink, the rest will be out of heart. That is a command judgement about morale, delivered by the man making it, in the moment.

The soldiers no sooner took notice of his temperance and magnanimity upon this occasion, but they one and all cried out to him to lead them forward boldly, and began whipping on their horses. For whilst they had such a king they said they defied both weariness and thirst, and looked upon themselves to be little less than immortal.1

⚠ And nothing material changed. The army was exactly as thirsty at the end of the passage as at the beginning — the water in that helmet would not have relieved any of them.
⚠ The corpus should record the disproportion because it recurs and Greene names it elsewhere. Law 42's Keys call the equivalent collapse "beyond any rational measure." ⚠ Same shape, opposite valence: a symbolic act producing a response wildly out of proportion to its content.
⚠ They were not less thirsty. Their thirst had been reclassified.
⚠ Before the refusal, the thirst was a private grievance — each man suffering a hardship imposed on him by a command decision made by someone drinking.

A gesture of self-sacrifice, for example—a show that you suffer as those around you do—will make people identify with you, even if your suffering is symbolic or minor and theirs is real.2
⚠ Alexander's gesture was symbolic and minor. His condition was not.
⚠ He had marched the same eleven days and thirty-three hundred furlongs. Plutarch says he was "almost choked with thirst." ⚠ The soldiers were not identifying with a performance; they were noticing that a man in the same state as them had declined a relief they could not have.
⚠ The Keys keep the small gesture and discard the shared condition — and the two are not separable, because the gesture's entire meaning is that it was made from inside.
⚠ A commander who is not thirsty, refusing water in front of thirsty men, is performing a tableau. ⚠ And the corpus should record why that fails rather than merely being distasteful: the soldiers' inference was he is in this with us, which is a factual claim, and factual claims can be checked.
⚠ A complication worth stating, because it cuts against the obvious reading.
This was not an expensive signal. ⚠ One helmet of water, in a situation where the water had already arrived and more was findable. Alexander gave up almost nothing.
⚠ And it worked anyway — which means the mechanism cannot be cost as proof of commitment.
⚠ What was expensive was not the water. It was the position. ⚠ A king who drinks in front of thirsty men has claimed an exemption; a king who does not has declined one that was his by right and freely offered. The cost is measured in privilege waived, not in litres.
⚠ The corpus should record the general form, because it makes the technique cheap and repeatable in a way costly signalling is not. Decline the exemption you are entitled to, visibly, at the moment it is offered. ⚠ The material value is irrelevant. What is being demonstrated is that the entitlement will not be exercised — and entitlements are refused one at a time, in public, or not at all.
⚠ Law 43 is about persuasion, and this is the only case in it where nobody is persuaded of anything.
No argument is made. ⚠ No emotion is played on, no fear invoked, no love appealed to, no jolt administered. A man declines a drink.
⚠ And the result is the chapter's stated objective in its strongest form: soldiers who "cried out to him to lead them forward boldly" under conditions they had, minutes earlier, been ready to quit.
⚠ Which makes it a problem for the Keys' whole apparatus. Push people to despair, then give them relief is not what happened. The despair was already there, no relief was given, and the outcome was better than either.
⚠ The corpus should state what the case actually supports. Not work on their emotions but remove the asymmetry that makes the hardship a grievance. ⚠ The soldiers' problem was not thirst — armies march thirsty — it was thirst while somebody else drinks, and that is a structural fact about the distribution of a burden rather than a psychological state to be manipulated.
⚠ And it identifies the failure mode of the chapter's own Transgression precisely. Marie-Antoinette's offence was never her spending in the abstract. It was spending during a famine — the same asymmetry, at national scale, held for fifteen years. ⚠ One king refused one helmet; one queen refused nothing.
Be in the condition before you make the gesture. ⚠ The refusal works because the refuser is thirsty. A signal of shared hardship made by someone not sharing it is a claim that can be checked, and it will be — and the checking costs you more than the gesture ever bought.
Look around first, without pretending you didn't. ⚠ Plutarch records Alexander checking who was watching, and the account is not embarrassed by it. A gesture nobody sees accomplishes nothing, and timing it to the audience is not hypocrisy — it is the difference between a private virtue and a command decision.
Refuse the exemption, not the resource. ⚠ The water was worth nothing; the entitlement to drink first was worth an army's willingness. Identify the privileges your position grants that the people around you can see and cannot have, and decline one visibly at the moment it is offered.
⚠ And do the arithmetic on the asymmetry rather than on the hardship. People will accept remarkable conditions and will not accept unequally distributed conditions. Before trying to make a hardship more tolerable, check whether it is a hardship at all or a grievance about who is exempt from it — because the second has a cheap fix and the first usually does not.
Strongest evidence. Plutarch supplies the sequence in full — the audience check, the refusal, the stated reason, and the observed result — and Alexander's own line names the mechanism as a morale calculation rather than a moral impulse.
Tension — the Keys' gloss drops the shared condition. ⚠ "Even if your suffering is symbolic or minor and theirs is real" describes a tableau, and the case describes a man in the same state declining a relief.

Open questions. ⚠ How often can it be repeated? An exemption declined once is a demonstration; declined every time it becomes the expectation, and the corpus has no case of the second. ⚠ And does it survive a commander who is genuinely better provisioned? Alexander's condition was real, and most command positions are not.
⚠ Plutarch appears in Laws 41, 42 and 43 — three consecutive chapters, always in the margin. At 41 he supplied the motive the chapter removed; at 42 he reversed the causation. ⚠ Here he supports the chapter and supplies a qualification the Keys then drop — a new variant for the marginal tally: the marginal that agrees with the law and disagrees with the instruction derived from it.

The insight neither produces alone: ⚠ the helmet is a counter-case to costly signalling and that is what makes it valuable. One helmet of water, in a situation where water had just been found and more was gettable, is close to free — and it produced a return that no amount of expenditure could have bought. ⚠ Which means the credibility was not purchased with cost. It was purchased by declining an entitlement in public — and entitlements are visible, discrete and refusable at almost no material price. ⚠ The corpus should record the distinction as a practical one, because the two techniques have opposite economics. Psychology — the nest in the corner. The Morale-Boosting Idea and Inner Mission records Meerloo's consistent observation across camps and wars: after the first days of depersonalisation, a man chooses a corner and arranges his few belongings, building a nest in a dirty wooden bunk, and from it begins to look out. A guiding idea grows out of their need to understand fate, their need for protective intercommunication and adherence to some common faith.
