The Judgment opens with coercion creates a reaction that will eventually work against you. Forty lines later the Interpretation states the technique.
Force will only strengthen their resistance. With most people the heart is the key: They are like children, ruled by their emotions. To soften them up, alternate harshness with mercy. Play on their basic fears, and also their loves—freedom, family, etc. Once you break them down, you will have a lifelong friend and fiercely loyal ally.1
And the Keys make it explicit.
Play on contrasts like this: Push people to despair, then give them relief. If they expect pain and you give them pleasure, you win their hearts.2
⚠ This is not an alternative to coercion. It is coercion with the relief cycle attached — and the vocabulary is unmistakable: soften up, break them down, shaking them to the core.
⚠ The chapter's own case supports a much weaker claim, and the gap between them is the finding.
The best way to do this is with a dramatic jolt, of the kind that Chuko Liang created when he fed and released prisoners who expected only the worst from him. Shaking them to the core, he softened their hearts.2
⚠ Who expected only the worst from him.
⚠ Liang did not manufacture the despair. He found it. The prisoners' expectation of execution was supplied by the situation — they had been captured in a war — and he had nothing to do with producing it.
⚠ So the case shows exploit an existing expectation, and the Keys prescribe create the despair yourself. ⚠ The Observance contains one manufactured despair and it is the valley of burning men, which produced no conversion at all.
⚠ The corpus should record this as the chapter's central overreach. The evidence supports a technique of relief against a dread you did not cause. The instruction is to cause it.
⚠ Greene's own sentence contains the correction and he does not take it.
If they expect pain and you give them pleasure, you win their hearts.
⚠ Expect. The mechanism runs on the anticipated outcome, not on the delivered one — which means the entire technique can be operated on expectation management with no harshness administered at any point.
⚠ And that version is strictly better. It is faster, it produces no grievance to be discovered later, and it does not require the operator to have done anything they will need to explain.
⚠ The corpus should also note that Greene abandons the contrast theory two sentences later.
Creating pleasure of any kind, in fact, will usually bring you success, as will allaying fears and providing or promising security.2
⚠ If pleasure alone usually works, the harshness is not doing the work. The chapter states a contrast theory and a simple theory in consecutive sentences and does not notice.
🚩 ⚠ The working model is stated flatly and the chapter's own Transgression refutes it.
They are like children, ruled by their emotions.
And in the Transgression, forty lines earlier: "Even socially insulated courtiers seethed with resentment—the queen treated them like children."3
⚠ The behaviour that destroys the negative exemplar is prescribed as the method.
🚩 And the model is also contradicted by the Keys, which say the approach "works on one and all" and not only on "the illiterate and unschooled." ⚠ A chapter cannot hold both people are children and this is not a claim about the unsophisticated without saying which it means.
⚠ The corpus should record the operational consequence rather than the moral one. A child model predicts that simplification is the technique. Greene's two best cases — Cyrus's two-day experiment and Liang's seven iterations — treat the target as capable of drawing an inference from arranged evidence. ⚠ Neither would have been produced by the model the Interpretation states.
⚠ The passage's first instruction is the best one in the chapter and it is tonally at odds with everything after it.
In all your encounters, take a step back—take the time to calculate and attune yourself to your targets' emotional makeup and psychological weaknesses.1
⚠ Take the time. Against jolt, shake to the core, break them down.
⚠ And the corpus should mark the difference, because they describe opposite tempos. Calculation and attunement are slow, particular and cumulative. A jolt is fast, general and identical for everyone. ⚠ You cannot be attuned to an individual psychology and also administer a standard dramatic contrast.
⚠ Which suggests the passage is two techniques written as one: a diagnostic discipline (find out what this specific person is afraid of and attached to) and a generic lever (produce dread, then relief). The first requires the second to be unnecessary.
🚩 ⚠ Once you break them down, you will have a lifelong friend and fiercely loyal ally.
A durability claim, unevidenced, in a passage describing a process of breaking someone down. [CONTESTED]. ⚠ The corpus holds the clinical literature on what attachments formed under manufactured dread actually are, and lifelong friend is not the finding.
🚩 Play on their basic fears, and also their loves—freedom, family, etc. ⚠ The etc. is carrying the individual-psychology half of the chapter's own two-pronged method. Having said that the key is what makes each person unique, the passage supplies a three-item list and an abbreviation.
🚩 No source anywhere. ⚠ The passage's single case is Liang's release of prisoners, which is itself uncited and drawn from a fourteenth-century novel.
⚠ The technique is real and well documented, and what it produces is not what the passage claims.
Run harshness and relief on the same person, repeatedly, and you get an attachment. ⚠ The attachment is genuine — that is the part the passage gets right, and it is why the technique is dangerous rather than merely unpleasant.
⚠ What it does not produce is an ally. An ally acts on your behalf when you are absent. ⚠ What the cycle produces is a person oriented toward the source of relief, which requires the source to remain present and to keep alternating.
⚠ And that is testable against the chapter's own case. Liang left. He returned north with his army, leaving no occupying force… he had no need to. ⚠ A relationship produced by administered dread does not survive the administrator's departure, and Liang's did, which is evidence that the cycle is not what produced it.
⚠ The corpus should state the discriminating question, because it separates the two readings of this whole chapter. Does the result hold in your absence? A settlement does. A bond built on alternating pressure does not — it converts into resentment at the moment the pressure stops, because the person is finally free to re-read what happened.
⚠ Which also explains the Keys' otherwise odd promise of "more leeway to deceive them later on." That is what you buy with the cycle version. ⚠ It is not a bonus. It is a description of the only thing the cycle version is good for.
Manage the expectation instead of manufacturing the dread. ⚠ The variable is expect. Where someone anticipates a bad outcome you did not cause — a difficult meeting, a refused request, a consequence they have earned — the relief is available at no cost and with no grievance attached.
Do not create the despair. ⚠ The chapter's evidence covers only the case where the fear was already there. Producing it yourself converts a technique with no downside into one whose entire value is that the target has not yet re-read the sequence.
Choose the tempo, because you cannot have both. ⚠ Attunement is slow and particular; jolts are fast and generic. If you are working on one person over months, the diagnostic version is available and the lever is unnecessary. If you are reaching for the lever, you have given up on the diagnosis.
⚠ And apply the absence test before you start. Will this hold when I am not there? If the answer depends on your continuing to alternate, you have built a dependency and not an alliance — and it will reverse the first time the pressure lifts, which it eventually must.
Strongest evidence. "If they expect pain and you give them pleasure" correctly identifies expectation as the operative variable, and "take a step back—take the time to calculate" is the chapter's soundest instruction. ⚠ Both are undercut by the sentences around them.
Tension — the case shows exploiting an existing dread and the instruction is to create one. ⚠ Liang's prisoners "expected only the worst from him" before he did anything.
Tension — the contrast theory and the simple theory are stated consecutively. ⚠ "Creating pleasure of any kind, in fact, will usually bring you success" makes the harshness redundant.
🚩 [POPULAR SOURCE]. 🚩 [CONTESTED] — "a lifelong friend and fiercely loyal ally" is a durability claim about attachments formed under manufactured dread, and the clinical literature does not support it. 🚩 They are like children is contradicted by the chapter's own Transgression and by its own Keys. 🚩 No source; the single case is itself uncited and drawn from a novel.
Open questions. ⚠ How many cycles? The passage implies one jolt suffices and Liang required seven iterations. ⚠ And is there a version with no harshness at all? Camillus returned the hostages and took the city, with no cycle anywhere — which the chapter would have to classify as creating pleasure of any kind, its own abandoned simple theory.
⚠ The Judgment and this passage are irreconcilable and thirty lines apart. Coercion creates a reaction that will eventually work against you against push people to despair, then give them relief. ⚠ The corpus should preserve it: Law 43 opens by prohibiting the thing its method requires.
⚠ And the Keys' "more leeway to deceive them later on" is the honest statement of what this technique buys. The law page recorded the Judgment/Keys divergence; this is where the mechanism behind it sits.
⚠ Against the Observance: six mercies and one massacre is alternate harshness with mercy in its literal form — and the massacre produced no conversion, only Liang's inability to face his prisoner. ⚠ The chapter's clearest instance of its own method is also its clearest evidence against it.
⚠ And against Cyrus: a manufactured contrast with no harshness administered — one day of ordinary labour, one day of feasting. ⚠ The corpus should note that the chapter contains the safe version of its own technique, in a marginal, and prescribes the unsafe one.
Psychology — who this actually works on. The Ordinary Person Thesis takes the comforting explanation that follows every documented case — she must have been psychologically fragile; troubled people, seeking something; already emotionally compromised — and shows it does not survive the evidence. Coercive persuasion works on ordinary people, which is why it is a technique rather than a curiosity.
They are like children, ruled by their emotions.
The insight neither produces alone: ⚠ Greene's child model and the fragility explanation are the same error pointed in opposite directions. His version says the technique works because people are weak; the folk version says it works only on people who were already weak. ⚠ The literature's finding kills both: the mechanism is situational, and the relevant variable is the environment — controlled expectations, controlled relief, controlled information — not the character of the person inside it. ⚠ Which is the more alarming reading and the more useful one. It means Greene's they are like children is not a slur that a sophisticated reader can exempt themselves from; it is a badly-worded description of a condition anyone can be placed in. ⚠ And it identifies the defence, which is not being cleverer. It is noticing the arrangement: who controls what you expect, who supplies the relief, and whether those are the same party. Where they are, the attachment that forms is real and its realness is not evidence that anything good is happening.
History — the version with no harshness in it at all. Camillus and the Faliscan Schoolmaster has a besieging Roman general watching a teacher walk out of the city leading the children of its noblest and wealthiest citizens — a delivered hostage, an offered shortcut to a siege the Romans had failed at for years.
Push people to despair, then give them relief.
What the pairing produces: ⚠ Camillus is the same outcome — a city won without force — reached with no dread administered at any point, and the chapter has no category for it. Greene's mechanism requires a contrast between anticipated pain and delivered pleasure. ⚠ Camillus's move produces its effect through the refusal itself, which is a demonstration about the actor rather than a manipulation of the target's expectations. The Faliscans did not feel relief; they revised their estimate of who they were fighting. ⚠ Which recovers the distinction Law 43 collapses and the corpus has been circling all chapter: a cycle changes how someone feels about you, and a demonstration changes what they believe about you — and only the second survives the target thinking it over afterwards. ⚠ Liang's returned kingdom is a demonstration. The jolt is a cycle. The chapter's evidence is entirely of the first kind and its instructions are entirely of the second.
Sharpest implication. ⚠ Liang did not push anyone to despair — he found it. "Prisoners who expected only the worst from him." The evidence supports relief against a dread you did not cause; the instruction is to cause it. ⚠ And the operative word is expect, which means the whole technique can run on expectation management with no harshness administered at all. ⚠ Greene abandons his own contrast theory two sentences later — creating pleasure of any kind will usually bring you success — which makes the harshness redundant. ⚠ Attunement is slow and particular; jolts are fast and generic. You cannot have both. ⚠ And the absence test settles it: a settlement holds when you leave, a cycle does not.
Generative questions.
