Four sentences, and two of them are the most candid in Law 43.
Symbolic gestures are often enough to win sympathy and goodwill. A gesture of self-sacrifice, for example—a show that you suffer as those around you do—will make people identify with you, even if your suffering is symbolic or minor and theirs is real. When you enter a group, make a gesture of goodwill; soften the group up for the harsher actions that will follow later.1

⚠ The gesture Greene is generalising from is Alexander's refused helmet, printed as a marginal on the same spread.
⚠ And it does not support the generalisation. Alexander's gesture was symbolic and minor — one helmet of water, in a place where more had just been found. ⚠ His condition was not. He had marched the same eleven days and thirty-three hundred furlongs and Plutarch says he was "almost choked with thirst."

A gesture is checkable when the condition it claims can be independently observed. ⚠ Alexander was visibly on the march, visibly thirsty, and the water was visibly available to him. Every element of the claim was in front of the audience.
A gesture is unverifiable when it asserts a state only the giver has access to. ⚠ A newcomer's sacrifice of an opportunity nobody knew they had; a concession whose cost is invisible; a hardship shared for an afternoon.
⚠ And the two have opposite risk profiles over time. The checkable gesture accrues — it is confirmed by every subsequent observation, and the observations are already happening. ⚠ The unverifiable one decays, because the audience keeps accumulating evidence about what you actually do, and the gesture was never anchored to any of it.
⚠ Which converts the chapter's advice into something with an expiry date it never mentions. A symbolic gesture buys a period in which you are read generously. What it cannot do is survive that period — and Greene's stated purpose, softening the group up for the harsher actions that will follow later, guarantees the audience will eventually re-read the gesture in the light of the harsher actions.
⚠ The corpus should record the consequence plainly: the passage's technique and the passage's purpose are incompatible. The gesture works until the punch, and the punch retroactively converts the gesture into evidence of the intent.
Make the gesture from inside the condition, or not at all. ⚠ The refused helmet worked because the refuser was thirsty. A concession made from a position the audience can see you are not in is a tableau, and tableaus are checked — not immediately, but eventually, and the checking costs more than the gesture bought.
Do it on entry, and understand why that is cheap. ⚠ There is no record yet, so the act becomes the origin of the record rather than a data point in it. This is real and it is the passage's one sound instruction.
Choose gestures whose cost is visible. ⚠ A sacrifice the audience cannot price is a sacrifice they will eventually discount. Decline something they know you were entitled to, in front of them, at the moment it is offered — which is free to arrange and impossible to fake.
⚠ And do not use it as pre-payment. Greene's stated purpose is soften the group up for the harsher actions that will follow later, and that plan contains its own failure: when the harsher actions arrive, the audience re-reads the opening gesture as the first move of the harsher actions. ⚠ You do not lose the goodwill you bought. You lose more than you bought, because the gesture becomes evidence.
Strongest evidence. The entry-timing observation is sound and structurally explained: a first act is not a data point but the baseline the subsequent record is measured against. ⚠ And the passage is unusually candid about its own objective.
Tension — the case it generalises from does not support it. ⚠ Alexander's gesture was minor and his condition was real, and the Keys keep the first and drop the second.

The passage implies it is durable and the corpus's reading is that it decays as evidence accumulates, and nothing here dates it. ⚠ And is there any case of a symbolic gesture producing goodwill in the acting sense? Law 43's only instance of that is Menghuo's, and it followed a returned kingdom.
