God as a Person Is Expedient

Neither Being Nor Non-Being

The claim is about what the referent is, and it is stated as a correction of a category error.

"A common mistake is to believe the original nature, often called 'God,' is a personal being that spoke to Moses or Krishna, Mohammed or Christ. The Self, or original nature, is the sole unchanging reality. The original nature is neither being nor non-being, and thus certainly is not a person who talks to people."1

Neither being nor non-being is the operative phrase and it refuses both available answers. Not a thing that exists; not a thing that fails to exist. The question has been declined rather than answered, which is the standard move for this referent across several traditions and is the reason the personal reading is treated as a category error rather than as a factual mistake.

And the consequence drawn is specific: it does not talk. Speech requires a speaker with intentions, a moment, and an addressee. A referent that is neither being nor non-being has none of those, so every reported instance of it speaking is something else — which is the same conclusion reached about testing, and reached the same way.

The four names in the list are chosen to make the claim unavoidable. Moses, Krishna, Mohammed and Christ — the founding revelatory encounters of four traditions, all reclassified in one clause.

Which is where the flag belongs. 🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION — four traditions' central claims are disposed of without any of them being stated, argued with, or cited.

What the Referent Is Described As

The positive description is given elsewhere and it is more informative than the negation.

"The true nature, Source or True Self is self-so, self-existent, self-manifest without a creator. It is complete and whole. It transcends everything and does not fall into either subjectivity or objectivity, birth or death, coming or going. It is the unborn potential of everything, the inexhaustible possibility for manifestation. Hence the original nature is called the Unmanifest or Unborn as well as the Unseen or Unknown (since gnosis of the essence is utterly impossible), and also the spontaneous, natural state. It is the natural state that is eternally self-existent, the underlying nature."2

Self-existent, without a creator — which is the sharpest structural point. It has no maker, which means it is not the sort of thing that could have made anything else in the way a creator makes. The creator relation is absent in both directions.

Does not fall into subjectivity or objectivity — so it is neither the one experiencing nor the thing experienced, and therefore not available as either party in an encounter.

The unborn potential of everything, the inexhaustible possibility for manifestation — the one positive characterisation, and it is a description of capacity rather than of an entity. Potential, possibility. Not something that exists and acts, but the condition under which anything can.

And the names follow from the properties. Unmanifest and Unborn, because it does not appear or begin. Unseen and Unknown, because — and the parenthesis is the important part — "gnosis of the essence is utterly impossible."

Utterly impossible, not difficult. Which is a hard epistemic limit placed on the target of the entire enterprise, and it is stated in passing. See True Words Are False Words.

Skillful Expedient Means, and Who It Is For

The personal God is not dismissed. It is reclassified as a device, with a stated purpose and a stated audience.

"When teaching common people it is simply skillful expedient means to tell them that there is an ultimate being or creator. This is done in order to tame the ignorant public and lead them to better ways of living."1

Three components and each is worth separating.

Skillful expedient means — the technical category for a teaching that is not literally true and is deployed because it works. Which is a recognised device in this tradition, not an accusation.

Tame — the stated effect. Not instruct, not console. A restraint on conduct.

Lead them to better ways of living — the stated goal, and it is behavioural rather than metaphysical. The device is aimed at how people act, and its success condition is that they act better.

Which makes the expedient a conduct technology, and it explains why it is so widespread: a personal deity who sees, judges and cares supplies a reason for good behaviour that is available to everyone, requires no attainment, and works without any of the machinery this material otherwise insists on.

And it names the audience explicitly. Common people, the ignorant public — a two-level structure in which one teaching is given to most and another is available to some. See Rules as the Path Is the Lowest Rung.

Analytical Case Study: Ramana's Formulation

The precise version of the claim is attributed, and the attribution is doing deliberate work.

"As the enlightened sage Ramana Maharshi said, who comes from the Hindu tradition of countless gods and deities, Iswara, the personal God, is true only from the relative standpoint of those who have not realized the truth through enlightenment. Only the absolute being (original nature) is real, and so even a personal God is unreal."1

True only from the relative standpoint is a more careful formulation than false, and the difference matters.

It is not saying the personal God is a lie. It is saying the statement has a truth value that depends on the standpoint from which it is made — true relative to an unenlightened position, unreal relative to the absolute. Two registers, both operating, and neither collapsing into the other.

Which is a real philosophical position with a long history, and it is stronger than the flat denial the surrounding passage makes.

And the parenthetical about the source is the argument. Who comes from the Hindu tradition of countless gods and deities. The point being made is that this is not an outsider's dismissal — it is a position held from inside the most deity-populated tradition available, by someone the passage calls an enlightened sage.

Which is the strongest evidential move available for a claim like this: not that the deities are foreign to you, but that a practitioner inside their tradition, at the far end of it, describes them this way.

Its limits are the usual ones. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — no work of Ramana's is cited, and this is a paraphrase of a widely-circulated position rather than a located quotation. [n=1 REPORTED].

Implementation Workflow

The practical content is a reading instruction, not a practice.

Read God as a term for the original nature throughout. When this material or another says God does something, the sentence is about the original nature — which does not act, speak or intend — or it is about the intermediate beings, which do. The two are constantly conflated in ordinary usage and this page's whole purpose is to separate them.

Do not argue with the expedient. It is not being called false but relative, and it is described as producing better conduct in people for whom nothing else would. Nothing here recommends removing it from anybody.

Do not expect an encounter. The referent is not a party to encounters, and every reported meeting is either an intermediate being or a supplied vision. Which is the same conclusion the vision material reaches, from the other end.

Do not aim below the target. The stated instruction is unambiguous: "In our spiritual striving we must find the original nature and nothing less."1 Nothing less rules out the relative levels as destinations, including the heavenly ones and including any relationship with a personal deity.

And hold the epistemic limit while you do it. Gnosis of the essence is utterly impossible means the target is not a thing to be known. Which makes find the original nature an instruction of a strange kind — and the strangeness is the subject of the last section.

The Same Move, Applied to the Other Terms

The expedient reading is not confined to God, and noticing the pattern is what makes it a method rather than a single claim.

Heaven is treated the same way. Described as the low-end goal of most religious instruction — a genuine but temporary condition, offered as a target to people for whom the real target is unintelligible.

Testing is treated the same way. God does not test people; karma only happens — a personal examiner supplied where an impersonal process is what obtains.

And Buddha runs the same structure in reverse. A word people take as denominational, restored to a technical meaning that names an attainment.

In every case the operation is identical: a term that functions as a person, a place or a membership is being converted back into a state, a process or a condition.

Which is worth stating as the general method, because it predicts what a reader should do with any similar term. Ask what the word would have to be if it named a condition rather than an entity — and if the answer is available, the personal reading is probably the expedient.

The limit of the method is that it always succeeds. Any personal term can be reconstrued as a state by someone determined to, and nothing in the procedure distinguishes a genuine recovery of technical meaning from a systematic deflation applied indiscriminately. See Buddha Is Not a Religious Word and God Does Not Test People.

What the Two-Level Structure Costs

A teaching held to be untrue and taught anyway has consequences, and they are not addressed here.

It requires someone to decide who gets which level. Common people, the ignorant public — the sorting is being done by the person holding the higher teaching, about everyone else, with no stated criterion. Which is the same structure as an initiation system, arrived at from the opposite direction.

It makes the lower teaching unimprovable. If the personal God is a device for taming conduct, there is no reason to refine it toward accuracy — accuracy is not what it is for. The expedient is optimised for effect, permanently, and drifts wherever effect leads.

And it puts the higher teaching permanently on the defensive. Anyone offering the deflated version to a person holding the personal one is not correcting an error; they are withdrawing a device that was doing work — conduct, comfort, meaning — and the deflation supplies no replacement for any of it.

Which may be why the passage's tone is so much harsher than its content. The content is Ramana's careful relative-standpoint formulation. The delivery is a common mistake, the ignorant public, just nonsense — the register of correction, applied to a teaching the same passage describes as skillful and beneficial.

The two-level structure is being asserted and its own logic is not being followed. If the expedient is skillful, the people holding it are being taught well, and there is nothing to correct. [SPECULATIVE] — this reading is not offered in the source.

The Sole Unchanging Reality

One phrase in the opening passage carries a practical consequence that the argument never draws out.

The original nature is called "the sole unchanging reality."1 And the fuller description makes the same point three ways: it "does not fall into either subjectivity or objectivity, birth or death, coming or going," and it is "eternally self-existent."2

Sole — nothing else has this property. Unchanging — it does not vary, develop, respond or withdraw.

Set against everything else in this material, that is the one fixed point in a picture otherwise composed entirely of processes. Channels open and close. Chi rises and falls. Merit accumulates and is spent. States arrive and are lost. Traditions decay. Even the heavens run out. All of it moves.

And the target does not. Which produces three consequences that matter to a practitioner more than the metaphysics does.

It cannot be missed by timing. A thing that does not come or go cannot be arrived at too late, and cannot have been available in a better century. Which quietly undercuts the urgency arguments made elsewhere — those are about the teachings being perishable, and the teachings are not the target.

It cannot withdraw. There is no version of this in which the practitioner is refused, ignored, or found wanting — an unchanging reality with no subjectivity has no capacity to respond to you at all, favourably or otherwise. Which is the same conclusion as God does not test people, reached from the properties instead of from the argument.

And it means every failure is on the practitioner's side of the relation. Not as blame — as location. If the target does not vary, then anything that varies in the experience of seeking it is happening in the seeker, and that is where the work is.

Which is the most useful thing the description supplies, and it is supplied by implication only. A fixed reference point is what makes a variable one legible — and the entire apparatus of stages, markers and purifications is an account of the variable side, measured against something the passage says does not move. See The Mirror That Does Not Cling.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — Ramana is paraphrased without a text; Moses, Krishna, Mohammed and Christ are invoked without any tradition's own account being stated. 🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION — four traditions' founding claims dismissed in a clause. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE. [SPECULATIVE].

Tension — skillful expedient, and a common mistake. The personal God is described as skilful means that leads people to better living, and as a mistake to be corrected. Both in the same passage, and the second undercuts the first: a device that works as designed is not an error in the person using it.

Tension — utterly impossible to know, and the thing we must find. Gnosis of the essence is utterly impossible sits directly against we must find the original nature and nothing less. What finding consists in, if knowing is ruled out, is not addressed.

Tension — nothing less than the original nature, and the intermediate beings are real. Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, devas and dharma protectors are treated as actual agents elsewhere in this material. The deflation applies to the ultimate and stops short of them, and the stopping point is never justified.

Open question — who is a common person? The two-level structure requires a sorting and supplies no criterion.

Open question — what does relative standpoint commit anyone to? Ramana's formulation is more careful than the surrounding claim, and the difference between unreal and true from a standpoint is never worked out.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two positions on religious language run through this material and this page holds them in the same paragraph.

The traditional terms are technically accurate and were misread. Buddha names an attainment. The visions record stages. Jacob's ladder is the three channels. The Song of Solomon is a gongfu record. On this account the traditions transmitted good information and their readers lost the key — and the work is recovery.

And the traditional terms are devices that were never accurate. The personal God is expedient means for taming the public. Heaven is a low-end goal offered because the real one is unintelligible. On this account the traditions transmitted useful fictions, and the work is deflation.

These are opposite operations on the same material. One says the tradition knew more than it appears to; the other says it knowingly said less than it knew.

And they are applied to adjacent claims without any rule for which gets which. Jacob's vision is decoded as accurate structural information; the voice in it is a projection; the God the tradition attributes it to is an expedient. Three different treatments of one episode, and the sorting is done case by case.

The convergence is that neither treatment leaves the ordinary reading standing. Whether a term is a lost technicality or a deliberate device, it is not what the tradition's own adherents take it to be — and both operations transfer interpretive authority from the tradition to the person performing the operation. See The Visions Are Fictitious and Catalogued But Unexplained.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Authority Construction and the Architecture of Belief — behavioral mechanics.

The expedient-means argument says a personal deity is supplied to tame the public and improve their conduct. The belief-architecture material describes the demand side of that transaction, and it is a harsher account than taming.

Greene's claim is narrower and worse than gullibility: "As humans, we have a desperate need to believe in something, anything. This makes us eminently gullible: We simply cannot endure long periods of doubt, or of the emptiness that comes from a lack of something to believe in."

The load is on endure. The problem is not that people accept bad evidence. It is that an unfilled belief-shaped space is experienced as intolerable, and intolerable states get relieved by whatever is nearest.

That inverts the expedient argument's assumed direction of supply.

The expedient account is top-down: a teacher, holding a truth the public cannot use, supplies a simplified version for their benefit. The device is given.

The belief-architecture account is bottom-up: the space exists first, it is intolerable, and it pulls in whatever is available. The device is demanded, and the teacher's contribution is at most a choice among candidates that would otherwise have been filled by something worse.

Two things fall out that neither account produces alone.

Deflation without replacement is not neutral. If the space cannot be tolerated empty, then removing a personal God from someone who holds one does not leave them with a more accurate view. It leaves them with a vacancy that something else will occupy, selected by nearness rather than by quality — which is a considerably stronger argument for the expedient than it tames the public, and it is the argument the passage's dismissive register works against.

And it explains why the deflated version does not spread. Neither being nor non-being, the unborn potential, gnosis of the essence is utterly impossible — this is not a candidate for filling a belief-shaped space. It is a description of a space. Which is why the two-level structure exists at all, and it is not a failure of the public's understanding but a structural mismatch between what is on offer and what the demand is for.

The insight: an expedient is not a concession to ignorance. It is the only form in which anything can occupy that position — and a teaching that refuses to be a device is not a better version of the same thing, it is not the same kind of thing at all.

The Live Edge

The unresolved thing is what find the original nature could mean, given the epistemic limit attached to it.

The instruction is unambiguous and it is the page's closing demand: we must find the original nature and nothing less. Everything below it is ruled out as a destination — the personal God, the heavenly realms, the relative standpoints.

And the same material says gnosis of the essence is utterly impossible. Not hard, not reserved for the few. Impossible. The referent is Unseen and Unknown, and those are given as names rather than as complaints.

So the target of the entire enterprise is stipulated to be unknowable, and the practitioner is instructed to accept nothing less than it.

Three readings are available and the page chooses none.

Finding is not knowing. Realisation is something other than gnosis — a change in the practitioner rather than an acquisition of content. Which is the standard reading in this literature and would resolve the tension, and it is never said, and everything hangs on it.

Or the limit applies to the essence only, leaving something else about the original nature available. Which would need the distinction drawn, and neither being nor non-being leaves very little on the other side of it.

Or the instruction is a refusal rather than a targetnothing less meaning do not settle, with no positive object at all. Which would make the whole demand negative, and would fit the apophatic vocabulary better than either alternative.

The stake is what a practitioner is doing for the rest of their life. Under the first reading they are being changed. Under the third they are declining, indefinitely, to stop at anything — which is a coherent practice and a very different one, and it is what you abide by not abiding would suggest.

Nothing here distinguishes them, and the two sentences that would have to be reconciled sit twenty pages apart.
