Rules as the Path Is the Lowest Rung

Sometimes Even a Negative Level

The placement is precise and the qualifier is the striking part.

"To strictly follow or enforce religious purity rules and disciplinary codes in a fervent, unbending, ultra-orthodox fashion, and to take this as the spiritual path, is considered a lack of spiritual wisdom and the lowest level of practice on the spiritual ladder, sometimes even a negative level."1

Read the qualifiers, because the claim is narrower than it looks.

Strictly, fervently, unbendingly, ultra-orthodox — four words marking a manner, not the rules themselves.

And to take this as the spiritual path is the operative clause. The error is a category claim: treating compliance as the road rather than as conduct.

So the target is not rule-following. It is rule-following held as the practice — which the material elsewhere places as the legitimate Stage of Study and Virtue Accumulation, commendable and with real societal benefits.

The lowest rung is still a rung. What makes it sometimes even a negative level is the manner: rigidity, fervour, enforcement.

And negative is a real claim. Not merely unproductive — worse than not practising, which requires the practice to be doing damage. The damage is specified below, and it is why the page is in behavioral mechanics rather than in eastern spirituality. See Tantra Breaks the Artificial Rules on Purpose.

Where the Rules Came From

The account of the rules' origin is the most interesting historical claim on the page.

"Such rules are always invented by men — sometimes men of Tao or just intelligent ordinary men — for immature minds lacking discernment."1 And: "Sages of the past simply invented rules and guidelines to help guide simple people, and attributed them to higher sources only to help them become accepted and take hold. It is like governments today deceiving people in order to guide and govern them."2

Three claims, escalating.

The rules were invented by people — sometimes attained ones, sometimes just intelligent ones.

They were designed for an audienceimmature minds lacking discernment, which is the same two-level structure as the expedient-means argument about a personal God.

And the divine attribution was a device, added so the rules would be accepted.

Which is a considerable claim to make in passing, and the comparison offered is the honest one: like governments today deceiving people in order to guide and govern them.

The comparison does two things. It concedes that the mechanism is deception. And it declines to condemn it — governments do this, it is how populations get governed, and the passage does not call it wrong.

The complaint is about duration rather than about origin: "to inflexibly take such recommendations past their original intent, or to carry them forward when they are no longer needed, has created more suffering in the world than can possibly be described."2

Past their original intent, and when no longer needed. A rule fitted to a condition, retained after the condition changed — which is the just outdated category from the dust argument, and it is the one with a death toll attached here.

🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION — the claim that all such rules were invented and falsely attributed is made about every tradition, with none named. See Unverified Dogma Collects Dust.

What Happens to Rigid Practitioners

The consequences are itemised at two scales, and the personal one carries a specific mechanism.

At the personal scale: "In subsequent lives what they denied themselves due to forcibly binding restrictions often manifests in extreme desires and mad personality disorders to fulfill those repressed tendencies (since they did not cultivate them away naturally through emptiness and wisdom). 'In one life good, in the next life bad.'"1

The mechanism is the same one described everywhere in this material: forced restriction stores rather than resolves, and the stored material returns amplified.

And the parenthesis names the alternative: cultivated them away naturally through emptiness and wisdom. Two routes to the same conduct — force, which stores; and dissolution, which does not.

In one life good, in the next life bad is the compressed version, and the non-metaphysical reading is available and just as sharp: a person who has held something down by force for decades is not safer than one who resolved it. They are loaded.

At the social scale: "Due to their rigidity, if people with such notions assume the leadership helm of societies they typically bring violence, misery, repression and persecution rather than harmony, prosperity, peace and social order. When such religious notions usurp the leadership helm of nations, those countries quickly weaken."1

Which is where negative level is earned. Not a slower road — a disposition that produces persecution when it acquires power.

And the characterisation is specific: "Not understanding the Tao, such people are usually quite extremist, prejudiced, and tend to persecution. They bind themselves in all sort of artificial injunctions that don't exist in reality."1 Bind themselves first, and the persecution follows from the binding. See The Mattress Dent and the Tight Shoes.

Analytical Case Study: Three Errant Views

The technical placement is given as a doctrinal classification, and it is the page's most precise content.

"There are five errant perspectives which must be eliminated on the road to enlightenment, and such adherents violate three in particular. These include eliminating the view that you are the body, eliminating one-sided or extreme views, and to stop taking religious rules, ceremonies and disciplinary codes as the spiritual path."1

Three of five, and each names a different failure.

The view that you are the body. Which connects rigidity to purity rules specifically — purity codes are overwhelmingly about the body: what enters it, what touches it, what it does, what it is near. A code organised around bodily purity presupposes that the body is the self, and that presupposition is the first errant view.

One-sided or extreme views. The unbending, ultra-orthodox manner named at the top, classified doctrinally. Not the content of any position — the holding of it to the exclusion of the other side, which is the same objection made elsewhere to settling on either half of any pair.

And taking rules, ceremonies and codes as the path. The category error, named as a standing item on a canonical list.

Which makes the whole page a gloss on one traditional classification rather than a novel complaint — and that is worth knowing, because it means the position is the tradition's own rather than this author's.

And the third item's presence on such a list is the interesting fact. A tradition that maintains rules, ceremonies and codes also maintains a doctrine that mistaking them for the path is an error to be eliminated — which is an unusual degree of self-awareness to have institutionalised.

[n=0 CITED] — the five-view scheme is invoked without a source, and only three are named. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY.

Implementation Workflow

Keep the rules and change how you hold them.

Nothing here says to abandon a code. The page's own positive recommendation is "relying on virtuous life principles for guidance — common sense rules that are beneficial, make us happy, and do not hurt others regardless of societal conventions."2 Rules are recommended. What is rejected is holding them as the path.

Check the manner, not the content. Fervour, unbendingness, enforcement, extremity — these are the named markers, and they are about how a rule is held rather than which rule it is.

Check whether you are enforcing. Follow or enforce — and enforcement on others is where the negative level lives, since binding yourself produces a knot and binding others produces persecution.

Ask what a rule was originally for. Past their original intent and when no longer needed are the two named failure modes, and both require knowing the intent. A rule whose purpose nobody can state is being carried rather than followed.

And notice the strain. A restraint held by force stores what it restrains. A restraint followed easily does not. Which is checkable directly: does declining this cost you anything.

One thing this page licenses that most of this material does not: deferring to outside authorities on questions of conduct — which is the next section, and it is the most unusual instruction in the corpus. See Let the Desire Arise and Don't Act.

Defer to Science, Defer to Justice

The instruction is stated plainly and it is remarkable for where it appears.

"And if science can provide better guidance rules for living than established religious rules of conduct or discipline you should defer to science. If justice conflicts with religion or cultural tradition one should also defer to justice, and so on. This is the correct way to live according to wisdom."2

Two named authorities placed above religious rules of conduct, and the and so on leaves the list open.

Which is a subordination of a tradition's conduct codes to external standards, stated inside that tradition's own material, and it is nearly unique in this corpus.

The criterion is better guidance rules for living — a functional test. Not truer, not more authoritative. Better at guiding. Which is consistent with the whole account of where rules came from: invented by people to guide people, so a better instrument for the same job supersedes.

And the justice clause is stronger. If justice conflicts with religion or cultural tradition, defer to justicewhich admits that a tradition's rules can be unjust, and settles the conflict against the tradition in advance.

The closing image is a legal proverb: "it is sometimes said that 'the law is an ass' and when circumstances are such that the law is truly an ass, one should certainly not enforce it."2

Should certainly not enforce it — and enforce is the operative word again. The instruction is about what you do to other people, and it licenses non-enforcement rather than disobedience.

Which is the practical shape of the whole position: follow sensible rules, do not treat them as the path, do not enforce them past their purpose, and defer to a better instrument when one exists. See Be a Lion, Not a Sheep.

The Discipline That Comes After

The counterweight is the thing that keeps the page from being an argument for looseness.

"Once you attain samadhi, to maintain it you are always following a stricter path of discipline than any set of rules or regulations stipulated by religious authorities, yet people don't understand this because they don't understand the purity of mind one attains, often called 'the mind of Heaven.'"2

Stricter than any stipulated code, and the reason is mechanical.

A code covers actions. A maintained samadhi is disturbed by things far below the resolution of any rulebook — minor agitations, small dishonesties in thought, the ordinary coarseness of a normal day. None of that is legislable and all of it matters.

Which reverses the trajectory a reader would assume. Not rules, then freedom from rules. Rules, then their removal, then a self-enforced discipline finer than the rules were.

And the discipline is not felt as restraint, which is what the mind of Heaven is doing in the sentence. A mind at that purity is not declining things; the things do not arise.

Which is also why the rigid practitioner is diagnosed as low rather than as merely different. They are producing, by force, an outward conformity that the higher condition produces without effort — the same behaviour, at enormous cost, storing everything it suppresses.

The historical observation attached is bleak and unsourced: "It is amazing that in the records of history it is the ultra-orthodox, who think they are championing true religion, who are usually the ones who kill the only people who succeed on the road of spirituality — the men of Tao."2 🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION — no case is named. See Saint and Hero, Mafioso and Thief.

They Sin Against Reality

One clause carries the metaphysical charge and it is the sharpest phrasing on the page.

Such people "bind themselves in all sort of artificial injunctions that don't exist in reality."1

Don't exist in reality — which is the same claim made elsewhere in this material about rules generally: no such rules and regulations exist in the absolute nature; all these rules are made by men.

And it makes the error ontological rather than behavioural. The rigid practitioner is not doing something wrong. They are treating a convention as a feature of the world, and organising a life around a distinction that is not there.

Which explains the extremism the passage attributes to them. A person defending a genuine feature of reality can be flexible about it, because reality will not go away if they relax. A person defending something that exists only as long as it is defended cannot.

The intensity is proportional to the fragility of what is being maintained — and an artificial injunction is maximally fragile, because it stops existing the moment enough people stop observing it.

Which is a better account of religious rigidity than the material's own moral one. Extremist, prejudiced, tending to persecution describes the symptoms. Defending something that has no existence apart from the defending explains why the symptoms cluster.

And it connects to the enforcement problem. Someone maintaining a real fact does not need everyone else to maintain it. Someone maintaining a convention does, because the convention is constituted by the collective observance — which makes enforcement not a personality trait but a structural requirement of the position.

[SPECULATIVE] — the fragility account is inferred here rather than stated. See True Words Are False Words.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — the five errant views are invoked without a text, and the historical claims name nobody. 🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION — the origin claim, the leadership claim and the persecution claim are all aggregate assertions about all traditions. [SPECULATIVE].

Tension — the rules were invented and falsely attributed, and this is not condemned. The comparison to governments deceiving people to govern them is offered neutrally. Which leaves the sages' deception approved and its continuation blamed, and no principle marks where the approval ends.

Tension — defer to science and justice, and verify everything yourself. The lion instruction elsewhere rejects accepting anything on authority. Here two external authorities are named as superseding a tradition's codes, and no method is given for checking either.

Tension — a negative level, and a legitimate first stage. Rules-as-path is the lowest rung and sometimes negative. Elsewhere the Stage of Study and Virtue Accumulation is commendable with real societal benefits. The distinguishing variable is manner, and the manner is not observable from outside a person.

Open question — what are the other two errant views? Three of five are named.

Open question — how does a practitioner tell a wise restraint from a forced one, in themselves? The strain test is the only one available and it is the same problem the mattress material leaves open.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two positions on conduct codes run through this material and they are held simultaneously.

Codes are the problem. The lowest rung, sometimes negative; artificial injunctions that do not exist in reality; a straightjacket; holding to them by force creates knots in the channels; the tantric path forces you to break the clinging ones.

And conduct is one of the practices. Behavioural correction on the seven-item list; merit-making as a prerequisite; you cannot succeed along a tantric path unless you are perfecting your errant habits; the discipline after samadhi is stricter than any code.

The reconciling term is always the same and it is always doing the same work: the grip, not the rule. Force stores; ease does not. Which is stated consistently and is never given a test.

The convergence is that both positions condemn the middle case identically. The person who keeps a rule and strains against it is failing on both accounts — generating obstruction on one, and not having corrected anything on the other.

Which is the practical residue and it is worth stating plainly: the instruction is not to keep fewer rules. It is to notice which of the ones you keep are costing you something, because the cost is the diagnostic and the behaviour is not. See Opening Channels Releases Inhibited Behaviour and True Words Are False Words.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Moral Agency & Categorical Responsibility — psychology.

The page's harshest material is a set of verdicts on rigid practitioners — extremist, prejudiced, tending to persecution, storing what they repress. The moral-agency literature supplies the question those verdicts skip.

The problem it opens with: at what point in the causal chain does someone become responsible for their action? The person committed the act; they are responsible; they should be punished. But why did they? Because of a rage disorder, elevated testosterone, poor impulse control. Did they choose the disorder? No. The hormone levels? No. The developmental environment that wired the impulse control? No.

The regress does not terminate anywhere clean, and the finding is that categorical responsibility is an assignment rather than a discovery.

Run that on the ultra-orthodox practitioner.

They were raised inside the code. The temperance dial was set before they could evaluate it; the rules arrived as reality rather than as convention; the fervour was rewarded by everyone around them and is indistinguishable, from inside, from seriousness.

And lacking discernment is a description of a state, not of a choice. Immature minds lacking discernment names exactly what the person did not select — and the rules were, on this page's own account, designed for them by people who knew that.

Two things fall out.

The diagnosis and the condemnation come apart. The mechanism holds — force stores, rigidity persecutes, the codes were fitted for an audience. None of it establishes culpability, and the page's register throughout is culpable: lacking spiritual wisdom, usurp, think they are championing.

And the practical instruction changes with the frame. Under the condemnation reading, the rigid are opponents. Under the causal reading they are the intended audience of a system built for them, running as designed, and the failure is in nobody's character.

The insight neither field produces alone: this material has an unusually good account of why the rigid disposition forms and reaches for an unusually poor account of what it deserves. The mattress and the tight shoes explain the deformation without blaming the foot. The same explanation applied here would produce the same result — and the one place it is not applied is where the subject is other people.

The Live Edge

The unresolved thing is who decides that a rule has outlived its purpose.

The argument requires a judgement to be made: this rule was invented for a condition, the condition has passed, and carrying it forward causes suffering. Everything on the page turns on someone being in a position to make that call.

And the page removes every available judge.

Not the tradition — its rules were invented and falsely attributed, and its ultra-orthodox enforce them past their intent.

Not the practitioner — who is, by the doctrine's own account, an immature mind lacking discernment until well up the ladder, and who has an obvious interest in finding their inconvenient rules obsolete.

Not the attained — who are, on this material's account, extremely rare, unidentifiable from outside, and historically killed by the people they would be correcting.

Science and justice are named, and they are the page's answer. Both are external, both have standing, and neither is a small claim to make — a tradition deferring to either has accepted an authority outside itself, and the passage states it in a single sentence without noticing.

Three readings, and nothing chooses.

It is a genuine subordination, and conduct codes are answerable to secular standards wherever those are better.

Or it is a rhetorical device — invoking uncontroversial authorities to license a rejection the author wants for other reasons.

Or the criterion is doing the work and the authorities are examplesbetter guidance rules for living, with science and justice as instances, and the real standard being the functional one.

The third is the strongest and the least stated. And it has the property the other two lack: it is checkable, it does not require an attained judge, and it survives the fact that science and justice are themselves contested — which the page needs and does not say.
