The visions and voices that arrive during channel transformation are not reports about anything.
"The big secret is that the visions and voices one experiences during these transformations, including Jacob's, are all fictitious."1
Including Jacob's — the ladder, the angels ascending and descending. No exemption for scripture, and none for your own.
Which is the single most consequential practical instruction at every phenomena-heavy stage, and it is stated without hedging. The Zen position is cited as having had it right all along: these things are illusions, or mara, and practitioners are told to ignore them.7
Ignore them is the instruction. Not interpret carefully, not discern the true from the false, not record for later decoding.
The mechanism is specific, and it is why the content is worthless as information.
"If you think angels have wings you'll be shown angels with wings, but don't ever for a moment believe that's how they really appear."2
The material is cobbled together from what is already in you — "imaginations which often make use of one's subconscious memories or knowledge of cultural symbolism."1
Which means the vision's content tells you about your own memory and culture, and nothing else. A Greek gets Greek furniture, a Christian gets Christian furniture, and "Greeks, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians" all get culturally pertinent visions of the same underlying stage.4 See The Vision Is Culturally Supplied.
And it applies to the most convincing category too: bodies. "All body visions are illusions. You do not actually arise in an illusory body, like an astral body."4 What feels like leaving your body in a subtle one is on this account another projection.
The framework does not say nothing is happening. It says the presentation is not the event.
"There are indeed sentient beings behind the projections, but what you see are usually illusions."5
Which separates two things people run together:
Something real is occurring — channels opening, chi moving, and on this account other beings assisting.
And the display is fabricated — assembled for you, out of you, to be intelligible to you.
So angels, Buddhas, dharma protectors, deities, cherubim with animal faces — all of these can accompany the ejection of dirty chi, and all of them are costume.5
The honest limit is stated plainly: you cannot tell. "Sometimes the experience is real or the representation accurate, but in most cases it is not. Only a master will know for sure, but regular human beings will not be able to differentiate between a projection in consciousness and genuine sensory input from the five senses."3
Which is why the rule is ignore, not discern. Discernment is not available to you, so a policy that requires it is not a policy.
They are not accidents. Four purposes are given, and knowing them removes most of their pull.
To validate progress. They "serve to validate that the chi channels are opening and the subtle body is being purified," while what you see is a symbolic representation.13
To motivate. Provided "in such a way as to get you through this stage and keep motivating you"1 — acknowledgement of practice, and enticement onward.16
To occupy. Sometimes projected "to keep you mentally busy and detached from fixating on processes," interrupting your focus so you do not cling to the body.14
And to hold the mind one-pointed for a while.16
Which reframes the whole category. A vision is a management tool aimed at you, not a message — and every one of those four purposes works better if you do not take the content seriously.
The motive given is compassion, and the practice is universal: "the masquerade employing traditional images from your own culture or religion," done to lead practitioners forward, with masters from all traditions warning not to be cheated by it.6
The strangest claim here is that being deceived does you good, and it has a stated mechanism.
"The deception is done in a helpful way and in fact eventually helps you learn to rely on your own wisdom."15
Follow it through. You are shown something compelling. You believe it. It turns out to be nothing. Repeat.
What that trains is not credulity but its opposite: a practitioner who has been fooled by enough impressive content stops treating impressive content as evidence. Which is exactly the capacity needed later, when the phenomena get more spectacular and there is still no master in the room.
And the confirmation offered is experiential rather than argued: "after you've been through this many times and seen all the types of forms and experiences that can be invented, you'll know it's true."16
Which is the honest form of the claim. You cannot be talked out of trusting visions; you can only be worn out of it — and the worn-out state is the goal.
Ignore them. That is the instruction, and it is not a metaphor for careful handling.
Do not interpret the content. It came from your memory and your culture. Decoding it tells you what you already had in your head.
Do not act on anything they say. Voices at these stages are in the same category — "you should never believe anything you hear via 'heavenly voices' during these experiences." See The Testing Maps the Blockages.
Take the one piece of information they do carry: that something is opening. Their occurrence is a rough progress marker. Their content is not.
And keep going. "You don't need the visions either, which is why some cultivators do not experience them."8 What is needed is to "keep cultivating, maintain an open mind and let go."8
One thing worth being plain about: if visions and voices are arriving outside of practice, or you cannot set them aside, that is also how serious illness presents. Nothing in this framework distinguishes them, and a doctor is the right first call.
The most reassuring line in this material is easy to miss.
Some practitioners never have any of this, and it means nothing about their progress.
Which follows from what the visions are for. If they exist to validate, motivate, occupy and hold attention, then a practitioner who is already steady, already motivated and not fixating needs none of it — and gets none.
So the absence of phenomena is not a sign of failure. If anything it is the cheaper route, since every vision is also a distraction the practitioner has to learn to discount.
Which inverts the usual anxiety. The person worried that nothing is happening because they see nothing has the situation backwards. See Gong Fu Is the Signpost, Not the Road.
The stated point of publishing all this is to end a category of confusion.
"These are really big secrets I am revealing so that the era of superstition and mystery in cultivation matters should end."9
And: "now you know why as the veil has been lifted to help cultivation no longer remain in the realm of the mystical."6
Which is the practical payoff of the whole doctrine. If the impressive content is manufactured, then nothing impressive is evidence — not yours, not anyone's, not a teacher's account of theirs.
There is one anticipated objection, and it is named: the explanations will seem like "science fiction fluff-fluff" until they happen to you personally — "but of course those from your own spiritual tradition are true from the start."9
Which is the point turned on the reader. Everyone applies the discount to other people's traditions and exempts their own, and the doctrine only does any work if you apply it to yours.
Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — Jacob's ladder and the traditions' warnings are cited without texts. [SPECULATIVE].
Tension — ignore them, and they validate progress. You are told the visions confirm the channels are opening and told to disregard them. Both cannot be fully acted on: a marker you must ignore is not a marker.
Tension — fictitious, and sometimes accurate. "Sometimes the experience is real or the representation accurate" — with no way for you to tell which, which makes the concession unusable.
Tension — with decoding scripture. If all visionary content is fabricated from cultural furniture, scriptural visions record the encoder's furniture rather than a transmissible event — and the Song of Solomon is elsewhere said to be "absolutely, one hundred percent for certain" about a specific stage.11 See Scripture as Projection Record.
Open question — who decides the content? Attributed to dharma protectors and other beings, drawing on your memories. What determines which image gets used, and why the common patterns recur, is only gestured at.10
Two things you are told about a vision, and they cannot both guide behaviour.
It means nothing. Fabricated, cultural, assembled from your memories, to be ignored — the content is noise.
And it means something. It validates that the channels are opening, marks progress, and is given as acknowledgement that your practice is working.
A practitioner holding the first genuinely disregards them. One holding the second watches for them, feels encouraged by them, and is thereby doing exactly what the enticement was designed to produce — which the material describes approvingly as the mechanism working.
Which may be the resolution: the visions are supposed to motivate you and you are supposed to see through them, and the tradition is content for practitioners to be at different stages of that. But it means the doctrine is not one instruction; it is a graduation, and nothing says where you are on it.
Memory Malleability and Perception Construction — psychology.
Perception is constructed rather than received: the brain builds an experience from sparse input plus stored expectation, and memory is reconstructive — reassembled at each retrieval from fragments and current context, not replayed.
Two findings bear directly.
Expectation supplies most of the content. What you perceive is dominated by the model, with sensory input doing far less work than it feels like — which is why prior knowledge, cultural schema and recent material shape an ambiguous experience so strongly.
And constructed content is indistinguishable from received content, from inside. A reconstructed memory carries the same confidence and vividness as an accurate one. There is no phenomenological marker separating them.
Which is exactly the position stated here, arrived at from the other direction. "If you think angels have wings you'll be shown angels with wings" is the expectation-supplies-content finding in one sentence. And "regular human beings will not be able to differentiate between a projection in consciousness and genuine sensory input" is the no-internal-marker finding, stated as a practical limit.
The pairing sharpens the instruction. If the discrimination were merely hard, careful attention might help. It isn't hard — it is unavailable, because there is nothing to attend to that differs. Which is why ignore is the correct policy and discern is not: a policy has to be executable.
And it gives the reassurance about absent visions a firmer footing. Whether you get vivid phenomena depends heavily on how much your mind furnishes ambiguous input — which varies enormously between people and says nothing about what is happening in the body.
Practical form: where content is constructed from expectation, its vividness measures your priors and not the world — so treat the occurrence as data and the content as autobiography.
What the source leaves undetermined is what happens to the decoding project if this is true.
The doctrine says visionary content is assembled from a practitioner's own memory and culture, that the same underlying stage produces incompatible imagery across traditions, and that not even the practitioner can tell projection from perception.
Which is a statement about every scriptural vision ever recorded. Jacob's ladder is named explicitly. And if the imagery is furniture, then what a scriptural vision preserves is the encoder's cultural stock — not the stage, and not anything transmissible about it.
And the method throughout depends on reading those visions as records of stages.
There is a repair available and it is never stated: narrative structure might transmit where visionary content does not. The sequence of events, the order of the labors, the physical details of what a person did — those are not visionary content and would survive the doctrine intact.
Which would let both stand. But it would also mean the decoding has to abandon the imagery and keep only the plot — and the readings throughout lean heavily on exactly the imagery this doctrine dissolves.
