Nobody expects a magical syllabus to send you back to sums. Astrology, yes. Alchemy, obviously. But quantity, structure, volume and the difference between finite and infinite read like a school timetable rather than a path into anything hidden.
The reason given is a single sentence and it decides the shape of the whole practice: everything has a measure, a weight, a name and a number, and this makes up the entire foundation of the universe.1 If that is true then a number is not a description of a thing. It is a handle on it.
And this is the entry where the two forces the rest of the curriculum runs on get derived — not asserted as a doctrine, but arrived at by looking at what arithmetic does.
It is put in the plainest possible way. The universe is a delicate equilibrium between the positive and the negative, and in magic these are known as the Additus and the Nihilus. One aspect provides and another takes away.
That is the entire cosmology, stated as addition and subtraction. One provides, one takes away, and the balance between them is what holds. Nothing here arrives as a revelation; it is offered as what a person notices after enough time with a plus sign and a minus sign.
The four-stage sequence the whole curriculum runs on turns up in this entry looking quite different from how it looks elsewhere. Everything is done through the delicate balance of adding and subtracting potential, energy, form and mass — and there again, in the same sentence, is the quaternary of Potential, Idea, Form and Manifestation seen from a mathematical perspective. So the four stages are not four boxes a thing passes through on its way to existing. They are four things you can add to or take away from, and every operation in this practice is a movement on one of them in one of two directions. Add potential. Subtract form.
That reframing is worth holding onto because it makes the spellbook sortable. A charm that gets a stalled project moving is adding to potential. One that dissolves a tie between two people is subtracting from form. The rest of the system is a very long specification of how.
Each force has four operations attached, and they are given as Latin verbs with the English underneath. Additus runs on Initio, Auctus, Gemino and Creo — to start, to augment, to multiply, to create. Nihilus runs on Retineo, Deminuo, Dispertio and Everto — to stop, to reduce, to divide, to destroy.
The status claimed for them is unusually high: these are the root of magical empowerment, and through them almost all of the magical operations are achieved, because these are the Potential Actions. Joined with more advanced formulas, they accomplish great magical feats.
Read the pairs across rather than down and the symmetry is exact. Start against stop. Augment against reduce. Multiply against divide. Create against destroy. Eight verbs, four opposed pairs, and every spell in the working material is one of these eight with a subject attached. The verbs get their own treatment elsewhere in this build; what belongs here is where they came from, which is a paragraph about arithmetic.
The strangest instruction in the entry is also the most concrete, and it is easy to read past because it is phrased as a question about quantity. How much does one thing have in relation to the ones outside or inside? The reason this matters: in several magical operations the apprentice will need to know this regarding the self, the environment, and the different beings in relation to oneself.
So before certain operations you are expected to have taken a measurement — of yourself, of the place you are standing in, and of whatever else is present — and to know the ratio between them. A quantity of what is never said. But the shape of the instruction is clear enough: some things are too big to attempt, and the way you find out is by counting rather than by feeling.
That is a different kind of caution from the ones elsewhere in this curriculum, which mostly warn you off by naming a spirit or a consequence. This one is arithmetic. You are less than the thing in front of you by some factor, and knowing the factor is the point of studying quantity.
Structure, space, mass and volume are on the list because they incorporate the actual things that surround us in the physical world. Ordinary enough. Then the entry turns to dimensions and the sacredness of geometry, which is called central in most magical teachings, and the reason it is central is a leap.
The concept of dimensions empowers the apprentice with the teachings of the many dimensions in the universe, and helps them gather an idea of the many worlds, planes and myriad states of consciousness that abound in the multiverse. Follow that chain. Learn that a dimension is a direction you can measure in. Accept that there might be more of them than three. Now the worlds, the planes and the states of consciousness this practice keeps referring to have somewhere to be. The mathematics is not evidence for the planes; it is the vocabulary that lets a student hold them without contradiction.
Which is a reasonable thing for a syllabus to do and worth naming for what it is. Nothing here argues that other planes exist. It argues that a student who has thought carefully about dimensions will not find the idea absurd.
The last piece of the discipline is the finite and the infinite, and it lands in operational terms rather than philosophical ones. This knowledge provides an idea of what boundaries, limits and borders truly are, in respect to the things in the universe and in relation to oneself. In relation to oneself. That clause is the working half. This practice is full of edges — a circle you must not step out of, a ten-foot radius of expanded energy, a hundred-mile range on a finding spell, a protection that fails across hemispheres. Every one of those is a boundary with a number on it.
And then augmentation and reduction, which is where the eight verbs come in. A limit is a quantity, so a limit can be increased or decreased — which is what most of the working material spends its time doing.
Gather everything possible on the subject. That is the instruction as given, with no book list attached — the only one of the eight disciplines that names no reading at all. Learn the eight verbs cold, in both languages. Four for adding, four for taking away. They recur constantly in the working material and they are the one thing in this entry that is used directly rather than as background.
Practise measuring before you operate. Yourself, the place, and whatever else is present, and the ratio between them. The instruction says you will need this for several operations and does not say which, so the habit has to be general.

⚠ The eight verbs are promised for later — these will be explained later on — and the explanation, in the ranges read in this build, amounts to their appearance inside incantation names rather than a section devoted to them. The Latin is sound: initio, auctus, gemino, creo, retineo, deminuo, dispertio, everto all carry the glosses given, with auctus being a participle rather than an infinitive. ⚠ The quantity instruction never says a quantity of what. Energy, mass, potential and power are all in play in the surrounding sentences and none is named as the thing to be measured.
Unresolved: whether the arithmetic is meant as an account of how the universe works or as a way of talking about it. The entry moves between the two without marking the change.
Follow this entry and magic is quantitative. Everything has a measure and a number, operations are additions and subtractions, boundaries are amounts, and before certain workings you count yourself against the room. Follow the working material and almost nothing is measured. The markers are sensations — a full vibration, a pressure, a firmness. The stopping conditions are felt rather than counted, and where a number does appear it is a fixed one handed down with the formula rather than a figure the practitioner arrives at.
Both are in the same curriculum, and the counting instruction is never once cashed out. A discipline built on measurement produces a practice in which the practitioner's own body is the instrument.
