Everything in the sphere chapter has been construction. Eight rings, sixty-four selected concepts, a geometry derived from bending the Tree into a circle. The Quickening is where you switch it on, and it runs to thirty-two numbered steps performed standing up.1
It's said not to be a complicated operation, and it has to be performed daily until the sphere coagulates. After that the schedule changes. What the steps do is take each ring in turn, light it, speak over it, and absorb it into the centre where you are standing. By the end you personally carry the powers of every ring you built.
The pattern repeats eight times, once per ring, and each cycle has the same four moves. You bring the ring to mind. One by one, each aspect is seen blazing in its appointed direction. As each is placed, you say that ring's placement formula — for the Virtues, Locus vicibus fungio virtutem. When the last one is placed and blazing, you face a specific direction, present the open right hand, and say a sealing formula: for the Virtues, facing North, In nomine tuo ordo deum factum lumine est.2 Then the ring ignites. It shines with a light a hundred times that of the Sun. The aspects fuse together and are absorbed by the core of the sphere, where the apprentice is standing, and that imbues the wizard with all the powers and attributes of that ring. The second ring runs identically. Its own formula, Locus vicibus fungio statutum. Its own direction, Northeast. And one addition: making the sign of the Greek small-case Alpha.3 So each ring gets a direction and, from the second onward, a traced sign.
The first three steps set the stage and contain one instruction worth more than it looks.
Stand facing North, both hands at your sides. Envision the sphere pulsating with a soft golden light. And then the step that isn't procedural: observe the sphere as it is, because by contemplating this simplicity you will uncover great secrets within.4
That's an invitation to stop, before anything is built, and look at the thing plainly. In a chapter of thirty-two steps and eight rings and sixty-four concepts, step one asks for simplicity and promises that the secrets are in it. Then, with the mind, trace a ring of light as the sphere's circumference, at the height of your waist — even though the sphere may have universal proportions. And over it, the words that start creation over again: "DIXITQUE DEUX — FIAT LUX — ET FACTA EST LUX." God said, let there be light, and there was light. The ring then illuminates with vigour and might.
The eight ring-cycles are repetition. The ending is not, and it's where the sphere stops being eight separate structures. At step twenty-seven, with the last ring — the Deities — absorbed, a claim arrives that appears nowhere else. The ring irradiates with the light of creation, and all of the creatures in the universe, physical, real and spiritual, understand that a Wizard of the Eldest Tradition has been born.5
Then the machine starts. The eight rings pulsate in unison and begin to rotate clockwise, and the instruction is to try to listen to the harmonious sound the sphere will start to make. After some minutes, all of the rings join together forming one luminous ring. That single ring moves at great speed, and its subluminal speed begins to draw energy from the universe into the sphere. And then the step that makes this a practice rather than a visualisation: tie your breathing to the energy being taken from the universe into the sphere.
Finally, "SPHAERUM MEUM EST PERFECTUM." My sphere is complete. Two things about that ending. First, the eight rings become one. Everything the sphere material spent pages distinguishing — inner supply against outer, virtues against laws against deities — collapses into a single rotating ring at the end of every session. Second, the breath is the last connection. Not a word, not a gesture: your breathing gets coupled to the intake, and that is the only place anywhere in the sphere material where the body is joined to the construct directly.
Each ring has its own direction for the sealing formula, beginning with North for the Virtues and Northeast for the Statutes. So the rite walks you around the compass as it proceeds, one eighth per ring, and from the second ring onward each sealing carries a traced sign as well. The body's orientation is doing work here that no other operation in the curriculum asks for.
Read the rite as a procedure and one requirement falls out of it that is nowhere stated as a rule. Every ring-cycle requires you to bring the ring to mind and see each aspect blazing in its appointed direction, one by one. That's eight aspects per ring, across eight rings — sixty-four concepts, each recalled in its correct direction, in order, without notes, since you are standing with your hands at your sides and then presenting one hand forward.
So the rite silently enforces the memorisation the Seventh Ring asks for directly, in its instruction to learn the potentials by memory and heart. You cannot quicken a ring whose contents you cannot recall in position. An apprentice who selected eight beautiful concepts and never memorised them has a ring that cannot be lit. That reframes the journal instruction too. Drawing the rings and writing the concepts at their appointed directions isn't record-keeping — it's the study aid that makes the rite possible, because what the journal builds is the recall the Quickening consumes.
The drawing instruction from the ring chapters turns out to matter here, rather than being tidy-mindedness. Drawing the rings and writing each concept at its appointed direction is not record-keeping — it is how the recall gets built, and the rite consumes that recall sixty-four times per session. It is also the only physical object the whole sphere chapter asks for.
The practical shape, assembled from the rite and its surrounding instructions. Do it daily until the sphere coagulates, then less often. No duration is given for the coagulation and no marker beyond the ones on the sphere page — a semi-palpable construct, and other people mentioning that the room feels different.
Stand. This is the only major operation in the curriculum performed standing rather than seated, and it faces North to begin. Each ring then has its own direction to face for the sealing formula, so the rite turns you through the compass as it proceeds.
Work ring by ring in order — Virtues, Statutes, Values, Esophoros, Archetypes, Universal Laws, Universal Potentials, Deities. Place each aspect, say the placement formula, seal with the sealing formula and the traced sign, and watch the ring fuse and be absorbed into you. Then let the whole thing spin. Rings pulsing in unison, rotating clockwise, listening for the sound, waiting some minutes until they merge into one ring, and coupling your breath to what it draws in. Close with Sphaerum meum est perfectum.
And keep the journal current, because the rite runs on recall and the journal is where recall gets built.
The rite, its formulas and its claims are asserted with no tradition named and nothing quoted. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.
🚩 The Latin is variable. Dixitque Deus, fiat lux, et facta est lux is Genesis 1:3 in the Vulgate and is printed here as DIXITQUE DEUX. The placement and sealing formulas — Locus vicibus fungio virtutem, In nomine tuo ordo deum factum lumine est, Sphaerum meum est perfectum — are not standard Latin constructions and read as composed for the rite.
⚠ The thirty-two steps are printed with figure blocks interleaved and this edition's conversion runs some together. The steps quoted here are legible; re-check the plate before relying on a formula for a ring not quoted above. Unresolved: the rite absorbs every ring into the wizard at the centre, each time it is performed. Whether that accumulates across daily repetitions, or resets and repeats, is not stated.
Follow the coagulation instruction and the Quickening is temporary scaffolding. You perform it daily until the sphere coagulates, and then the schedule changes — which implies the sphere eventually holds itself and the rite becomes maintenance. Follow the rite's own content and it is the operation, not the preparation. Every performance ends with the rings merging, the merged ring drawing energy from the universe, and your breath tied to the intake. That is the sphere doing its job, and it happens inside the rite rather than after it.
Those give different answers to a simple question: what is a quickened sphere doing on a day you don't perform the Quickening? On the first reading it runs on its own. On the second, the drawing-in only happens while you are standing there breathing with it. Nothing addresses which, and the difference decides whether the sphere is an engine or an activity.
Bhūtaśuddhi, Mantra-Nyāsa and the Divinization of the Body — Both rites do the same structural thing: take a set of named items, place each one at an appointed position with a spoken formula, and end with the practitioner having absorbed what was placed. The correspondence is close enough to be surprising — placement, utterance, position, absorption, and a practitioner who is different at the end than at the start.
The difference is what gets placed. The nyāsa material places syllables and deities onto the body, at points on the actual physical form, so the divinization happens to a body that is already there. The Quickening places concepts into rings around the body, at compass directions, and the absorption runs inward from a construct the practitioner built themselves out of study.
So the two traditions divinize in opposite directions, and each one's risk is the other's safeguard. Placing onto a body means the ground is given and cannot be got wrong — it is your body, and it will be there tomorrow. Building that ground yourself means everything depends on what you chose and whether you can still recall it, and that is why this rite silently requires sixty-four memorised placements, and why a wrongly-chosen deity can darken the whole thing. One tradition can only mis-place; the other can mis-build.
Sharpest implication. The rite quietly enforces a requirement nothing states as a rule. Every ring must be recalled aspect by aspect in its appointed direction while you stand with your hands at your sides — sixty-four concepts, from memory, in position. So only what is memorised can be quickened, and a ring you cannot recall is a ring that never lights.
Generative questions.
