When a planet enters a new rashi, it doesn't enter it naked. It enters wearing a form — golden, silver, copper, or iron. The form depends on where transit Moon sits at the exact moment of the planet's rashi-entry, measured from the native's natal Moon. The form determines whether the planet's transit will deliver brilliant results or muted ones, whether it will perform at full power or stumble below expectation.1
Rao chapter 26.2 calls these forms murthis — idols, forms — and they explain a clinical observation classical practitioners have always noticed: two natives with identical apparently-favorable transits sometimes experience radically different outcomes. The murthi-doctrine names why.
The procedure: find the exact moment a transit planet enters a new rashi. Note transit Moon's position at that moment. Count which house (from natal Moon) transit Moon is in. Map the house-count to murthi-type per Rao's Table 62:2
The murthi assigned to a planet at its rashi-entry persists for the entire duration of that planet's transit through that rashi. Mercury entering Gemini as a Swarna-murthi will deliver favorable results across the whole Gemini transit; entering as a Loha-murthi will mute or damage even otherwise-favorable transits.
The doctrine is native-specific. The same planet entering the same rashi at the same moment produces different murthis for different natives, because the murthi depends on each native's natal Moon position. A transit that's golden-form for one native is iron-form for another.
The murthi acts as a quality modifier on the transit. The transit itself runs on standard rasi-from-natal-Moon principles (favorable/unfavorable houses). The murthi overlays a second axis: even a structurally favorable transit can underperform if the form is iron; even a structurally unfavorable transit can avoid the worst outcomes if the form is golden.
Rao's worked example at line 8887 demonstrates: Mercury entered Gemini at 3:06pm IST on May 26, 2000, with transit Moon at 10° 29' Aquarius. For a native with natal Moon in Aquarius (Aquarius = 1st from natal Moon), Mercury is Swarna-murthi during the entire Ge transit — favorable form, full results. For a native with natal Moon in Pisces (Aquarius = 12th from natal Moon), Mercury is Loha-murthi — iron form, highly unfavorable, results muted even if the transit is structurally good. Bill Gates has natal Moon in Pisces; the Mercury Ge transit ran as Loha for him, and his company received a legal setback during it.3
The murthi-doctrine encodes how the moment of rashi-entry conditions the entire transit duration. The transit isn't just a positional event; it's a quality-stamped event. The stamp persists.
The murthi-doctrine integrates with Vedha (transit obstruction) and Tara (constellational-favorability) — the three together form the standard transit-refinement apparatus. A planet entering a rashi as Swarna-murthi and in a favorable Tara and not obstructed by Vedha will perform at full power. A planet entering as Loha-murthi and in unfavorable Tara and obstructed by Vedha will perform minimally regardless of how favorable the underlying rasi-transit appears.
The Gates-example demonstrates the convergence. June 8, 2000 ruling: Mercury was Loha-murthi (iron form), multiple planets were causing Vedha on Mercury, and several planets were in bad Taras. Three-channel convergence of unfavorable refinement-factors explains why Gates's favorable rasi-transit didn't protect him from the legal setback. The base-transit-reading would have predicted neutral-to-favorable; the refinement-reading caught the actual outcome.
The doctrine also feeds back into dasha analysis. A native running a favorable Mercury-dasha during a Loha-Mercury transit experiences muted dasha-results; the same dasha during a Swarna-Mercury transit experiences amplified results. The transit-refinement and the dasha-period interact.
Bill Gates, natal Moon in Pisces. May 26, 2000: Mercury enters Gemini, transit Moon in Aquarius. Aquarius is the 12th from Pisces. Mercury is Loha-murthi for Gates during the entire Ge transit (which ran approximately May 26 to August 3, 2000).
The base transit reading: Mercury in Ge is the 4th house from Gates's natal Moon. The 4th house is generally favorable for Mercury transit. A flat reading predicts professional benefit.
The murthi overlay: Loha. Highly unfavorable form. Mercury cannot deliver its favorable rasi-transit at full strength. The actual outcome — June 8 anti-trust ruling against Microsoft — confirms the muted reading.
A practitioner who ran only the base-transit check would have predicted favorable outcome and been wrong. The murthi-overlay caught the actual outcome. The doctrine is the discipline that distinguishes a base-reading from a refinement-corrected reading.
It is 8am. You're checking a transit-window for a native. You note the transit planet's upcoming rashi-entry — Mercury enters Gemini on date X at time Y.
You look up transit Moon's position at that exact moment. (Software does this; manual calculation is slow.) You note Moon's rashi.
You count: which house is Moon's rashi from the native's natal Moon? You map the count to murthi-type via Table 62.
You note the murthi for the entire upcoming transit. You combine with the base-transit reading (favorable or unfavorable rashi-from-natal-Moon) and the other refinement-doctrines (Vedha, Tara). You produce an integrated prediction.
Time elapsed: three minutes for the murthi check alone. The doctrine is fast and high-yield once internalized.
The apparatus fails when the practitioner skips the murthi-check on apparently-favorable transits. A transit that looks structurally good gets predicted as favorable without the murthi overlay; the actual outcome turns out to be muted or unfavorable. The murthi was Loha or Taamra and the practitioner didn't check.
A second failure is over-emphasizing the murthi-check. The doctrine is a refinement — it modifies the base-transit reading; it doesn't replace it. A reader who calls every Loha-transit "highly unfavorable" without considering whether the base-transit is otherwise weak or strong produces extreme predictions that don't always match outcomes.
The third failure is computing the murthi at the wrong moment. The rule specifies the exact moment of rashi-entry, not the moment when prediction is being made. A practitioner who checks transit Moon's position three days after the rashi-entry gets a different Moon position and a wrong murthi. Software-based rashi-entry-moment calculation avoids this.
The murthi-doctrine is set out in Rao chapter 26.2, lines 8874–8894.4 The classical source is Parashari, transmitted through the Sanjay-Rath lineage. The doctrine appears in some other classical commentaries with stable definition.
The standing tension: the murthi persists for the entire transit duration despite changes in transit Moon position during the transit (Moon moves through all twelve rashis approximately every 27 days, so a slow planet's transit covers many lunar cycles). The doctrine fixes the murthi at rashi-entry-moment and ignores subsequent Moon movements. Some practitioners read this as a structural feature (rashi-entry moment is canonically privileged); some read it as an under-specification.
A second tension: the murthi depends on natal Moon position, which is birth-time-dependent. Imprecise birth times produce wrong natal Moon positions and therefore wrong murthi readings. The doctrine is birth-time-sensitive in a way that the base-transit reading (which doesn't require precise natal Moon) is not.
Rao and the Sanjay-Rath lineage transmit the murthi-doctrine with stable definitions. Kurczak/Fish/Pai/DiCara give the doctrine less explicit attention; their transit-readings focus on Tara and rasi-from-natal-Moon without the murthi overlay. The lineage-divergence isn't on the apparatus itself but on its operational priority.
The murthi architecture is a moment-of-entry quality stamp — a refinement that persists for the duration of a transit based on conditions at the entry-moment. Several other vault domains run similar entry-moment-quality logic.
Behavioral Mechanics: First Impression Anchoring — Influence-research has documented that the first impression a person makes in a new context (job interview, social setting, professional pitch) shapes subsequent interactions for a long duration. The first-impression is the entry-moment; its quality persists through the relationship. Murthi-doctrine formalizes the same insight at the planetary level: the moment of rashi-entry stamps the entire transit-duration. The handshake reveals: entry-moment quality is a generalizable persistence-creating mechanism. Behavioral analysts could explicitly diagnose first-impression quality using a murthi-equivalent four-category scheme (highly favorable / favorable / unfavorable / highly unfavorable) and predict downstream-interaction quality accordingly.
Creative Practice: Character Arc Architecture — Screenwriters know that a character's first scene shapes the audience's reception of the character throughout the story. The introduction-moment quality persists. The murthi-doctrine maps the same insight to chart-architecture. A screenwriter could design first-scenes systematically using a murthi-equivalent quality-scheme: gold (the character enters with full audience-favorable conditions), silver (mostly favorable), copper (unfavorable, with subsequent recovery required), iron (deeply unfavorable, character has to climb out). The first-scene quality-stamp persists.
Psychology: Anchoring Bias (Tversky-Kahneman) — Cognitive research has shown that initial information presented in a decision context anchors subsequent processing. The anchor's quality (high or low, favorable or unfavorable) persists in shaping the outcome. The murthi-doctrine is the same insight at the transit level. The convergence sharpens both: entry-moment quality stamps subsequent processing, whether in chart transits, in cognitive decisions, in social interactions. The skilled practitioner of any domain attends to entry-moment quality with refinement-doctrine precision.
The Sharpest Implication
If you accept the murthi-doctrine, the moment of entry into any new phase becomes operationally critical. A planet entering a new rashi at a moment when conditions are unfavorable will underperform throughout that rashi. Generalize: an agent entering any new context (a new job, a new relationship, a new project) at a moment when conditions are unfavorable will underperform throughout that context. The entry-moment is doing structural work the agent rarely realizes. The discipline: attend to entry-moments, choose them when possible (the muhurta doctrine in jyotish formalizes this), and recognize when an entry-moment was unfavorable and the consequences will persist.
