The worst outcomes in the body-cultivation schools come from one specific habit.
"The biggest catastrophes in the form schools of Esoteric Buddhism, Taoism, and yoga come precisely because people concentrate too much on the body and form the habit of clinging to something that isn't the real Self. They practice bringing consciousness into the body and get fixated in that way, tying themselves up into a ball of knots."1
Bringing consciousness into the body is the named practice, and it is the error.
Which is worth stating carefully, because it sounds like what every body-based method does. The distinction is between attention passing through the body — which is how channels open — and consciousness being installed there as a residence, which is what fixates.
The result is described as structural rather than momentary: "they form a strong habit of clinging to an identification that impedes their progress for ages."1
Ages. Not a stalled year — a habit of identification carried forward, which is why it is called a catastrophe rather than a mistake.
The reasoning is given directly, and it is the whole basis of the warning.
"People develop the errant habit of trying to bring consciousness into the body when the true mind is everywhere. The body-consciousness is not the real 'I' just as the 'I'-thought is not the real 'I' or true Self. However this sort of practice road ends up strengthening one's belief in the existence of being a false body and ego."8
Two false candidates for the self, and the body-schools swap one for the other:
The 'I'-thought — the ordinary sense of being a self, which everyone starts with.
The body-consciousness — the felt interior, the energies, the sensations, which intensive body practice makes vivid.
Neither is the real Self. And the second is more convincing than the first, because it comes with unmistakable physical evidence.
Which is why the road strengthens rather than dissolves the identification. You have not loosened your belief in being a self; you have relocated it into something more compelling. See Observe From a Bodiless Centre.
The schools named are broad: yoga, tantra, Esoteric Buddhism, kabbalah, western alchemy, paganism and Taoism — "all of which focus on cultivating the energy and form of the body rather than investigating mind, consciousness, and awareness."8
The mechanism that makes the error self-sealing is stated in one clause, and it is the sharpest observation on the page.
"Because they can get superpowers and semblance samadhi from cultivating this internal esoteric structure, and because energies do change inside, they think they're correct and won't listen."1
The practice works. That is the problem.
Energies do change inside. Real, felt, undeniable.
Superpowers and semblance samadhi are produced. Genuine capacities, genuine states.
So the practitioner has continuous confirmation. Every experience they are having says the method is correct, and the only evidence against it is an argument from someone whose position produces no comparable phenomena.
Which is why the fixation lasts ages rather than being corrected: there is no negative feedback in the system. The results keep arriving, and the results are what convinced them.
Semblance samadhi is the key term — a state that resembles the real attainment closely enough to be mistaken for it, and there is no internal marker distinguishing them. See Semblance Dharma.
The severity is measured by a decision rather than by an adjective.
"My master says that they represent the great catastrophes of the cultivation path that are frequently seen in Tibetan Buddhism and other esoteric schools that concentrate on the body's energies and abilities of the mind while bypassing the search for the ultimate Source. He has seen so many catastrophes among practitioners along these lines that he does not teach this material, even though he is recognized as an enlightened Vajrayana master."2
A recognised Vajrayana master who declines to teach Vajrayana body material.
Which is the strongest available form of the warning, because it costs the person making it something. He has the qualification, the lineage, and the standing — and has concluded that the casualty rate does not justify transmitting it.
Bypassing the search for the ultimate Source is the named diagnostic. Not that the body work is wrong, but that it substitutes for the thing it was supposed to prepare.
[SPECULATIVE] 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 MOTIVATED REASONING — the master is the author's own teacher, and the judgement is relayed rather than independent.
There is a second route into the same trap, and it starts before any practice does.
"Most Taoist practitioners errantly fixate on the physical body to their own detriment and thus never succeed on the path. They think they have some secrets no one else has because of their special Taoist descriptions of internal gong-fu, and special visualization practices from rare books, but they never make it to those stages of attainment because they don't cultivate emptiness, just the body."4
The sequence:
Rare material — special descriptions, practices from rare books.
Which produces the sense of possessing something — secrets no one else has.
Which anchors identity to the method rather than to the result.
And makes abandoning it unthinkable, because abandoning it means giving up what makes you distinctive.
Which compounds the first mechanism. The practice produces real phenomena and the practitioner's self-image is built on having access to it. Two independent reasons not to listen, and neither has anything to do with whether the method works. See There Are No Secrets.
And the same diagnosis appears in the broader survey: practitioners drawn by "majestically colorful techniques," who "increase their mental attachments that last across lifetimes" and "amplify attachments to the body, the tendency to grasp onto form, and the idea that consciousness should be encapsulated in form."3
Let attention pass through the body; don't take up residence in it. That is the operative distinction, and it is the difference between the practice and the catastrophe.
Run emptiness cultivation alongside everything. The stated failure is body work without it — "they don't cultivate emptiness, just the body."
Put the body techniques down when they have done their job. They are starters; keeping them past ignition is the same error in its milder form. See The Match and the Flame.
Treat produced phenomena as non-evidence. Energies changing, states arriving, capacities appearing — none of it certifies that the method is taking you anywhere, because all of it appears in the failure case too.
And watch for the possession feeling. If having the method matters to you — if it is part of who you are — that is the second mechanism operating, and it is the one you can actually notice.
The check that matters: are you looking for the source of mind, or are you working on your body? The first can survive without the second. The second without the first is the described road.
Worth being fair about the outcome, because it is not nothing.
Real energetic change. Stated plainly — energies do change inside.
Superpowers. Not denied, anywhere in this material.
Semblance samadhi. A state resembling the attainment.
And a strengthened identification, which is the cost.
Which makes this a trade rather than a swindle. The practitioners are getting what the practice produces; they are not getting what they think it is producing, and there is no experience available to them that would reveal the difference.
The Milarepa warning to Gampopa is the tradition's own version: even with "samadhi, superpowers and wonderful experiences," without realising the true nature of his mind "he was wasting his time."7
Which is the only kind of correction that lands — from inside the same tradition, from someone with all the attainments, saying they are not it.
The material acknowledges its own exposure, and the acknowledgement is worth recording.
"In the case of Hercules, we are discussing the phenomenological stages of the path in detail as a guide to the whole process, so we absolutely must mention the physical changes of chi and chakras or else we wouldn't have any story."5
A detailed body map is exactly the input that feeds this failure. Rare descriptions, internal structures, stages to track, phenomena to identify — that is the profile of the material described as producing the catastrophes.
The defence offered is purpose: a guide for someone who needs to know what is happening, not a practice to be performed. Which is a real distinction and a thin one, and it puts the responsibility on the reader.
Which makes the practical instruction for anyone holding such a map: consult it, and do not practise from it. See Don't Be Wed to My Interpretations.
Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 MOTIVATED REASONING — the teacher relayed is the author's own, and the schools criticised are the ones the author's method competes with. 🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION — most Taoist practitioners, the biggest catastrophes, no counts anywhere. [SPECULATIVE].
Tension — teach it and condemn it. The material describes the body stages in more detail than most sources and identifies detailed body material as what produces the casualties.
Tension — energies do change, and it impedes progress. Both are asserted of the same practice, which is coherent only if energetic change and progress are separable — and that separation is exactly what the practitioners cannot detect.
Open question — what does "bringing consciousness into the body" consist of? It is the named error and it is never described procedurally, which leaves a practitioner unable to check whether they are doing it.
Open question — is it recoverable? A habit that impedes progress "for ages" and lasts across lifetimes is described, and nothing says what undoes it.
Two things you are told about the body work, and the timing decides which applies.
Do it. The channels must open, the preliminaries are necessary, the whole-body practices are recommended constantly, and the physical foundation is required for the complete attainment.
And it is the most dangerous thing in the field. The catastrophes, the ball of knots, the identification that lasts across lifetimes, and a qualified master who refuses to teach it.
The reconciliation offered everywhere is emptiness practice running underneath — body work plus the search for the source is the path, body work alone is the catastrophe.
Which is clear as a formula and hard as a practice, because the body work produces evidence and the emptiness work produces none. A practitioner naturally weights the half that is visibly doing something, and that weighting is the failure.
Misaligned Optimization Metrics: The Eurostar Case — business.
Faced with complaints about a long journey, the obvious optimisation was to make the trains faster — enormous expenditure to cut the time. The alternative, famously, was to make the journey better: staff, service, the experience of the hours. The metric that was easy to measure and improve was not the metric that mattered, and pursuing it consumed resources that could have solved the actual problem.
Two things carry.
Measurable proxies attract effort disproportionately. Where one dimension can be tracked and improved and another cannot, work flows to the first regardless of which one is load-bearing.
And progress on the proxy feels like progress on the goal, so nothing in the feedback tells you that you are optimising the wrong thing.
Which describes this failure exactly. Energetic change is measurable from inside; realisation is not. A practitioner running both gets continuous feedback from one and silence from the other — and effort migrates to the half that reports.
Which is why the practitioners "think they're correct and won't listen." They are not being stubborn. They are reading a genuine, improving signal, and the only thing wrong with it is that it is the wrong signal.
The second point explains the duration. Optimising a proxy does not produce failure that announces itself; it produces steady visible improvement alongside no movement on the thing you wanted. Which can run for decades before anyone notices there was a goal.
Practical form: when one dimension of a practice reports and another does not, assume effort has already migrated to the reporting one — and build the check on the silent dimension deliberately, because nothing will prompt you to.
What the source leaves undetermined is how a practitioner could ever detect this from inside.
Every diagnostic offered is external. The master can see it. The tradition can warn about it. Milarepa could tell Gampopa.
And the practitioner has no available signal, by construction: the energies change, the states arrive, the semblance samadhi is indistinguishable from the real one, and the identification feels like depth rather than like clinging.
Which means the warning, as stated, is only usable by someone who already has a teacher — the exact population the material says does not exist.
The nearest thing to a self-check is buried in the pride material: whether possessing the method matters to you. That is noticeable from inside, it is independent of the phenomena, and it is the only feature of the failure that a person could catch in themselves.
The material has it and never offers it as the test. Which leaves the most dangerous condition in the field diagnosable by everyone except the person who has it.
