There is a stage at which speech spontaneously takes metrical form.
"The pumping of those energies at this time are so strong that you cannot sleep for days, and additionally, for a short while everything you say will sometimes come out in rhyming pattern or rhythmical verse."1
Not that you compose verse. That ordinary speech arrives in it.
Which is the odd part and the reason the detail is worth keeping. Rhythm and rhyme are appearing in language that is not being made as poetry — remarks, answers, whatever you happen to say.
And it is bounded: for a short while, alongside days without sleep, during a specific stretch of the ejection cycle. See The Impure Illusory Body.
The phenomenon is not novel, and two existing names are given for it.
"Some schools therefore call this a stage of inspiration, and others call this an opening of consciousness."1
Inspiration, in the literal older sense — something coming in, unbidden, and speaking through the person.
Opening of consciousness, which frames the same event as capacity rather than as visitation.
Which is worth noting for what it says about the whole category of inspiration claims. If metrical speech arrives spontaneously at a physiological stage, then a tradition that describes poets as inspired is describing something that happens, and giving it an agent.
Which is the same move made everywhere else here: a state gets a local explanation, and the state is the constant. See The Vision Is Culturally Supplied.
The sleeplessness is not incidental — it is named as the same cause.
The energies pump so strongly that you cannot sleep for days, and the verse arrives in the same window.1
Which makes them two outputs of one condition rather than two coincidental symptoms.
And the sleeplessness has its own described character elsewhere: flooded with vitality, boundless energy, thousands of things to say — the state some schools call Zen sickness. See Wrestling Is Unwinding.
Which is the recognisable shape of the thing: high arousal, no sleep, pressure to speak, and language arriving in patterned form.
The stated function of the whole display is motivational: it is "a standard pattern you are shown to keep you practicing at these crucial stages of cultivation so you do not slack and lose momentum."1
The phenomenon has a described shape over a lifetime, and it is unusually specific.
"The tendency to talk, write or sing in rhythm at this stage eventually dies down in several days time as the channels become freed of their obstructions. One will pass through one large, and possibly several smaller occasions of this phenomenon when going through these stages, but they happen in close proximity to one another and after it disappears it never returns."2
One large occasion. Possibly several smaller ones. Close together. Then never again.
Which is a strong claim and a checkable one. Most of the phenomena in this material recur across cycles — the ejections, the heat, the coolness, the pearls. This one is described as a single clustered episode in a life.
And the reason given for it ending is the standing mechanism: the channels become freed of their obstructions, so the friction producing it stops. See The Rotation Counts Are Fictitious.
Which also extends what the phenomenon covers: talk, write or sing. Not only speech — the patterning shows up in writing and in singing too.
Two further details are attached, and the second is offered as speculation by the source itself.
The tradition that noticed it most. The state is "noted in countless spiritual schools, especially the Celtic tradition," with the accompanying condition described as having "thousands of things to say."3
And a possible origin claim: the event, repeated several times during the purification cycles, "might possibly be the origin behind Celtic legends of bubbling brooks that provide inspiration, but we cannot know for sure."3
But we cannot know for sure — which is the source hedging its own decoding, and worth marking because it does so rarely.
And a guess about the mechanism, also hedged: "I once thought that the rhythm of the verses might be related to the rhythmic pulsation of the chi, but am not sure."3
Which is the most interesting speculation on the page. If speech falls into metre because something in the body is pulsing metrically, then poetic rhythm would have a physiological period rather than a conventional one — and that is testable in principle against the actual rates involved.
The source raises it, declines to claim it, and leaves it. [SPECULATIVE].
Take the phenomenon at face value and it makes a claim about craft that is worth extracting.
Metre and rhyme arrive without being sought. The person is not composing; they are talking, and the language is coming out patterned.
Which suggests that metrical structure is not an addition to speech but something speech falls into under certain conditions — available underneath, and surfacing when the ordinary regulation of language loosens.
Three things follow that a working writer might use.
The patterning is upstream of intention. If it can arrive unbidden, then a poet reaching for metre is recruiting something that has its own tendency to appear rather than imposing an external scheme.
High arousal plus reduced sleep is the named condition. Which is, empirically, the state a great many writers have described working in — and this account attributes the form directly to it rather than to inspiration in the agent sense.
And it is temporary and self-limiting. For a short while. Which would predict that work produced in such a state has a natural window, and that the window closes on its own.
[PLAUSIBLE — needs corroboration] 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — the schools that call it inspiration are not named.
If it happens, note it and do not chase it. The whole standing instruction on phenomena at this stage applies: they exist to keep you practising, and attending to them is not the practice. See Gong Fu Is the Signpost, Not the Road.
Do not treat the verse as content. The form is what is being produced by the state; what the sentences say is ordinary. A person in this condition will overrate what they are saying, because the delivery is doing something the content is not.
Write it down if you want, and read it later. Which is the only honest test available for whether the material is any good — and the answer will be clearer once the window has closed.
Do not extend the sleeplessness deliberately. It is a symptom here, not a technique, and it resolves.
And expect it to stop. For a short while is the description, and the phenomenon ending is not a loss of anything.
Worth being clear, because this is the phenomenon most likely to be mistaken for a gift.
It is not a sign of attainment. It sits in the same category as clicks, lights and visions — produced by the process, informative at most about where the chi currently is. See Clicks, Visions and Voices Are Channel Artifacts.
It is not evidence that what you are saying is true. The form and the content have separate causes, and only the form is being produced by the state.
And it is not something to build a practice around. The material's position on every impressive phenomenon is the same: the display exists to keep you going, and the going is the point.
Which is a specific risk here, because unlike a click or a light, this one produces an artefact — words, in verse, that persist after the state has passed and can be shown to people.
Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE — one practitioner's account, one sentence. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — the two traditional names are attributed to unnamed schools. [PLAUSIBLE — needs corroboration].
Tension — a motivational display with a real output. The phenomena at this stage are described as patterns shown to keep a practitioner going, and this one produces language that outlasts it.
Open question — is the verse any good? The account says speech comes out metrical and says nothing about quality, which is the first thing anyone would want to know.
Open question — how short is "a short while"? Days, matching the sleeplessness, or shorter — not specified.
Open question — does it recur? The ejection cycle repeats a dozen times or more; whether this accompanies every round is not addressed.
Two ways this sits in the material.
As a symptom. One item among many produced by strong root-chakra pumping — sleeplessness, flooded vitality, and patterned speech, all from the same cause and all to be noted and ignored.
And as something the traditions dignified. Two schools have names for it, one of which — inspiration — is among the oldest ideas about where art comes from.
Which is the interesting collision. The corpus treats as a physiological side effect the thing that several traditions treat as the source of poetry — and it does so without remarking on the size of that claim.
The convergence is with the standing deflationary pattern: a named mystery becomes a stage marker. Same move as the rotations, the light absorption, the melting bodhicitta. See There Are No Secrets.
Sleep Deprivation as Mental Coercion — psychology.
Sustained sleep loss produces a reliable and well-documented cluster: heightened suggestibility, degraded judgement about one's own state, emotional lability, and — at the extremes — perceptual and cognitive disturbance. Two things carry.
Self-assessment degrades faster than performance. A sleep-deprived person's confidence in their own clarity is preserved or even elevated while their actual judgement falls, which is why the state is exploitable.
And the effects arrive without the person attributing them to sleep loss. Whatever is happening gets explained by the content of the situation rather than by the deprivation.
Which is the caution this phenomenon most needs. Days without sleep is the stated condition, and everything a person concludes during it — about the significance of what they are saying, about their own state, about what the experience means — is being formed under exactly those conditions.
The first finding is the sharp one. The confidence survives while the judgement does not, so a practitioner speaking in spontaneous verse across three sleepless days will feel unusually clear and be unusually unreliable — and there is no internal signal separating the two.
Which does not mean the phenomenon is only sleep deprivation. It means the interpretation of it cannot be trusted while it is happening, whatever its cause — and that is a claim about the observer rather than about the event.
Practical form: any state that includes significant sleep loss should have its conclusions deferred, not just its actions — because the faculty that would flag the impairment is the one impaired, and the material produced will read differently once the window closes.
What the source leaves undetermined is whether anything was actually composed.
The account says speech comes out in rhyming pattern or rhythmical verse. Which could describe two quite different things.
Genuine composition, arriving without effort — in which case a practitioner in this state is producing work, and the tradition that called it inspiration was describing something real about where poetry comes from.
Or patterned noise — the rhythm and rhyme surfacing as a formal property of speech under high arousal, with no more content than ordinary talk, sounding significant because metre always does.
The difference is enormous and nothing distinguishes them in the account.
And it is testable in the most ordinary way available: write it down, and read it a month later. Which no one who has been through this appears to have reported doing.
Which leaves the one phenomenon in this whole corpus that produces a durable artefact — the one thing that could actually be examined afterwards by anyone — as the one nobody kept.
