You know a charm that clears up misunderstandings and another that steadies a room. Can you use both on the same afternoon, at the same moment, aimed at the same thing? And if you can, is that just two spells, or has it become one bigger one?
The answer here is that combining is its own class of working, with a name and four shapes. An Artificium is a complex arrangement of orisons which are grouped into particular forms to achieve a more powerful result.1 And the four forms are not four styles. They differ by what you are allowed to combine and what the combination is aimed at.
The four are Magical Cascades, Magical Chains, Matrixes and Magical Optimizers — and the first sorting given is by where the effect lands. A matrix affects natural events and the more cosmic reality, while the cascades affect the more personal dimension of the Wizard and its relations to other beings, be them physical or spiritual. Cosmic on one side, personal on the other. That is the split that matters when you are choosing, and it is stated before any of the four are defined. The general claim about all of them: Artificium are more powerful versions of Orisons in every sense and add power to the more simple Orisons.
Then the cost, in the same breath: the Wizard must also learn by memory the various magical movements required for every Artificium. Combining formulas brings a body requirement that a single orison does not have.
The definitions of the cascade and the matrix are almost identical in shape and differ on one word, and that word is the whole distinction. A Magical Cascade is a formula where various Orisons of similar effect are joined together to achieve a greater and more spectacular, individualized effect on the personal life of the wizard. A Matrix is single Orisons of very different effects woven together by magical formulas, in order to maximize an operation and affect the natural world. Similar effects, joined. Different effects, woven.
Take that seriously and the two forms are doing opposite things with the same raw material. A cascade stacks charms that all point the same way, and the result is more of what they already did — greater, more spectacular, and aimed at one person's life. A matrix takes charms that do unrelated things and ties them together so they cover a situation, and the result is aimed at the natural world.
Which explains the two verbs. You join like things. You weave unlike ones, because unlike ones do not stack — they have to be arranged so each is doing its own job inside one operation.
And it explains the target split stated earlier. A person's life is one thing, so amplification suits it. The natural world is many things at once, so coverage does.
The chains get the shortest definition and the most specific brief.
The Magical Catenas are created for protection, benediction and altering the surrounding areas with very powerful incantations for a stronger effect.
Three purposes and one of them is spatial. Protection and benediction are familiar categories from the schools; altering the surrounding areas is not, and it is what a chain is for that neither the cascade nor the matrix covers. ⚠ The form is introduced as Magical Chains in the list of four and then defined under the name Catenas — catena being Latin for chain. Both names are used for the same thing.
So the working sort is: cascade for your own life, catena for the ground around you, matrix for the natural world at large. Three scales, and the fourth form is not a scale at all.
The fourth form is different in kind from the other three and it is the most interesting thing in the section.
Magical Optimizers are single formulas that, attached to an Orison, serve to make it better, change some aspect of the original incantation, or alter the regular effect of the spell.
So an optimizer is not a combination of orisons. It is an attachment — something added to one formula that modifies what that formula does. And the footnote says where it comes from, which is unlike anything else in this curriculum: Optimizers are calculated through a complex mathematical formula that analyzes the magical name and provides the names of associated angels, intelligences, princes and elementary counterpart spirits that help further the magic of the operation. Calculated. From the magical name. Which produces a roster of four kinds of being — angels, intelligences, princes, and elemental counterparts — attached to that name.
That is the gematria machinery of this system doing something concrete. A name goes in, arithmetic happens, and out come the names of the beings who work with it. Which is what the Kabbalist trade is for, and it is the only place in the volume where the calculation has a stated product.
⚠ The complex mathematical formula is named and not given.
Every Artificium carries movements, and they have a formal name. The movements are of the hand, fingers, body and the wand, and they are formally called the Somatic Dynamic of every incantation. What they consist of: movements in which various elements are taken into consideration, tying every movement with the universe, planetary aspects or divine aspects. So a gesture is not free-form. Each one is tied to something — a region of the universe, a planet, a divine aspect — and that tie is what it is for. They add greater power to any incantation, and the instruction attached is memorisation: the Wizard should learn them by heart.
⚠ No movement is specified anywhere in the ranges read in this build. The category is named, given a formal title, said to be required for every Artificium, and left without a single example.
The mechanism gets one image and it is the best sentence in the section. Learn the movements by heart, as if writing a long and fluid sentence in the air — and then: in essence that is precisely what it's happening. Not like writing. Writing. And what is being written on: an imprinting of the will of the Wizard upon the Matrix of the Physical Realm, calling upon planetary forces, celestial beings, divine names and nature spirits.
Imprinting. On a surface that is the physical realm itself, treated as something that takes an impression. That is the same claim the wand section makes about tracing sigils — that the drawing happens in the subtler levels rather than in the air — and here it is extended from one figure to a whole sentence. The hand is not accompanying the words. It is writing a second version of them, at the same time, into a different medium.
Which is why the movements are said to add power, and why they have to be memorised. You cannot write fluently in a language you are looking up.
Choose the form by what you are aiming at. Your own life and relationships: a cascade. The ground and the area around you, or a blessing or protection: a catena. The natural world and larger events: a matrix.
Then pick your orisons by the rule that fits the form. A cascade takes orisons of similar effect and joins them. A matrix takes orisons of very different effects and weaves them.
Reach for an optimizer when you want one formula changed rather than several combined. It attaches to a single orison and makes it better, alters an aspect of it, or changes its regular effect. Get the optimizer from the name. The calculation runs on the magical name and returns the associated angels, intelligences, princes and elemental counterparts — which is the Kabbalist's work, not the caster's.
And learn the Somatic Dynamic by heart before you attempt any of it. Hand, fingers, body and wand, each movement tied to a region of the universe, a planet or a divine aspect. The stated requirement is memory, and the stated reason is that you are writing a sentence rather than making gestures.
The four forms, their definitions, the optimizer footnote and the Somatic Dynamic are all in The Artificium section of the chapter on incantation types. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.
⚠ Catena is Latin for chain and the usage is consistent, though the form is named twice under two names in the same paragraph. ⚠ The optimizer calculation is described as a complex mathematical formula analysing a magical name, and the formula is not given. This is consistent with the reading-list entry on Kabbalah, which says the formulas exist and are given only to the most trusted student.
⚠ No somatic movement is specified anywhere in the ranges read in this build, and every Artificium is said to require them. Unresolved: nothing states how many orisons a cascade or a matrix takes, whether there is an upper limit, or what happens when incompatible ones are combined.
Follow the definitions and an Artificium is a formula. Orisons joined or woven, arranged in one of four forms, producing a stronger and more targeted result — all of it verbal, all of it a matter of which incantations go together. Follow the closing paragraph and it is a physical performance. Hand, fingers, body and wand, every movement tied to a planet or a region of the universe, memorised, written in the air as a long fluid sentence that imprints on the physical realm.
Both are required for the same working, and only one of them is specified. The verbal half is defined four ways; the bodily half is named, given a formal title, made mandatory, and left blank.
Zero handshakes on this page. The material is one system's own rules for combining its own formulas, and the connection worth having — a gesture that inscribes rather than gestures — is carried inside this build by the wand page, where the same claim is made about tracing a single figure.
Sharpest implication. A cascade joins orisons of similar effect and a matrix weaves orisons of very different ones. Same raw material, opposite operations: one amplifies, the other covers — and the target follows from that. Amplification is aimed at a person's life; coverage is aimed at the natural world.
Generative questions.
