The Practice of the Consciousnesses

A Practice With Nothing to Perform

Almost everything in this curriculum has a procedure. Words to say, an hour to wait for, a metal to hold, a circle to draw, a stone to charge. Then there is one instruction with none of that — no formula, no object, no schedule, no place — and the only thing it asks is that you think about something regularly.

It is given by a mentor to a boy who didn't even know how to cast a spell, and it is passed on unchanged.1 Four things to ponder about each of a handful of figures, and the stated result is not a power. It is that you stop drifting.

The Four Things You Ponder

The method is one sentence and the four fields in it are the whole technique.

I chose several of these consciousnesses and began pondering about their work, activities, associated entities and their attributes.

Work. Activities. Associated entities. Attributes.

Four fields, and they are not four names for the same thing. Work is what a consciousness is for — the domain it operates in. Activities is what it actually does inside that domain, which is narrower and more specific. Associated entities is who cooperates with it. Attributes is what it is like.

So the pondering has structure. You are not sitting with a word; you are turning a thing over on four axes, and the entries in the appendix supply all four. ⚠ Which is why the format is what it is. The appendix looks like a reference list and is a set of worksheets — every entry is written to answer the four questions the practice asks.

Analytical Case Study — What One Entry Gives You for Each Field

Take the first entry in the appendix and read it against the four fields. It is the only one given in full in the ranges read in this build, and the fit is exact. Joser Abagios is the cosmic consciousness of Justice, trials, judges, lawyers and courts.

That is the work — a domain, given as five things rather than one, which already keeps it from staying abstract. Not "justice" but courts and the people in them. This consciousness operates looking for the broad application of Justice at all levels of creation.

That is the activities — what it is doing, and where. Broad application, at all levels, which distinguishes it from a being that answers a particular case.

The entities associated with this consciousness are the intelligences of Jupiter and Saturn, the Potentates, the eons, the Authorities of light, and the Initiates of Universal Justice.

That is the associated entities, and there are five kinds: two planetary intelligences, two ranks of celestial, and a category of people.

It is justice with mercy. It works to make things right in every situation, for this is known as The Great Balancing Mind.

That is the attributes — a qualification, a disposition, and an epithet. ⚠ Every field the practice asks about is answered, in order, in one short paragraph. Which means an apprentice with the appendix in front of them has the material for the pondering already sorted, and the work is dwelling on it rather than gathering it.

Two further entries hold the same shape. Achidos Bolba covers Equality, Respect, good willed relationships and communications, works by bringing balance or equilibrium where it is needed, and corrects situations in which people are abusing their power, allowing slavery, block communication. Merios Kassus covers Devotion to the Source Divine, spirituality, ascetic, mystics and all of the Divine and Initiatic Mysteries.

The Initiates Are People

One item recurs in every associated-entities list and it is the only one that is not a spirit. Joser Abagios has the Initiates of Universal Justice. Achidos Bolba has Initiates of Cosmic Liberty. Merios Kassus has the Initiates of Spiritual Faith and Divine Favor.

Three consciousnesses, three sets of Initiates, each named for that consciousness's domain. ⚠ Which puts human beings inside the roster of what cooperates with a cosmic consciousness — alongside planetary intelligences, archangelic mediators, devas, Potentates and Authorities. And it puts a practitioner working this method in a definite position: pondering the associated entities of a consciousness means, among other things, pondering the people who already work with it.

Nothing in the ranges read in this build says who the Initiates are, whether the title is conferred, or whether the practice described here is how somebody becomes one.

Choose Several — and Nothing Else Is Specified

The one instruction about scope is a word, and it is deliberately loose. I chose several of these consciousnesses. Several, out of the forty-nine the appendix carries.

Not one, and not all. And the choosing is the first act of the practice, left entirely to the person doing it.

What is not specified is everything else. No number. No duration for a session. No frequency. No order. No sign that it is working, and no point at which it is finished.

⚠ Set against the rest of this curriculum, that absence is stark. Elsewhere a working has eleven days, six minutes, three circuits, ten recitations, four days of fasting. Here there is one word — several — and a verb.

Which fits what the practice is aimed at. A thing measured in sessions can be completed; a change in how you conduct yourself cannot, and the material offers no way to check.

The Result Is Conduct, Not Capability

The outcome is reported as a memory rather than promised as an effect, and the wording is careful about what changed.

The more I thought about them and how they related to the world around me, I found myself drawn to behave, deal and conduct myself in ways very similar to what they proposed.

Drawn to behave. Not able to do something new — inclined toward a way of acting, and the inclination arrived rather than being decided on. And the middle clause is the working part: how they related to the world around me. So the pondering is not contemplation of an abstraction. It is noticing where a thing shows up in what you actually meet, which is why the four fields include activities and associated entities — the parts that put a consciousness in the world rather than above it.

Then the conclusion, reached afterwards: sometime later I understood that this practice had kept me in the right track, away from evil and malice. Sometime later. Not during, and not by any marker at the time.

And the mentor's own framing matches it: a cosmic consciousness can help and guide an Apprentice in keeping him/her in the right track towards magical perfection. ⚠ Which makes this the only practice in the volume whose stated output is the practitioner's character, and the only one whose result is recognised in retrospect.

Three Transmissions of the Same Instruction

The entry carries its own chain of custody, and it is one of very few places in the volume where a teaching is traced to a person. A mentor taught it to a young man who could not cast. That young man did what my Mentor told me to do. And then: so this is why I give it to the Apprentice now, and why I advise the same thing my late Mentor advised me.

Three links. Received, practised, passed on — and the third link is explicit that nothing has been changed: the same thing my late Mentor advised me. ⚠ In a volume that names no lineage, cites no predecessor and attributes its material to an unnamed Eldest Tradition, this is the one instruction with a named human source and a stated act of handing on. The mentor is not named either, but the transmission is described rather than assumed.

And the reasoning given for passing it on is the mentor's own position, quoted directly: a cosmic consciousness is a power so vast and incomprehensible that Wizards should begin to familiarize with them since their very first class. Since the very first class. The unusability is the qualification.

Implementation Workflow — Doing the Practice

Read the appendix and choose several. Not one and not all forty-nine. The number is yours and choosing is the first act.

For each one you keep, work the four fields in order. Its work — the domain, taken as the specific list the entry gives rather than as a single abstract word. Its activities — what it is actually doing inside that domain. Its associated entities — the intelligences, ranks of celestial, and Initiates named alongside it. Its attributes — the qualifications and the epithet.

Then relate them to what you meet. That is the clause that turns this from reading into practice: think about how they related to the world around me. A consciousness of Justice is worked by noticing where justice and its absence turn up in an ordinary week.

Expect no marker. There is no duration, no count, no sign of progress and no completion, and the one report of a result says it was understood sometime later. And expect the change in conduct rather than in capability. Nothing here is cast, nothing is charged, and nothing new becomes possible. What is described is finding yourself inclined to behave the way the thing you have been thinking about behaves.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The method, the four fields, the reported result and the transmission are all in the opening of Appendix I. The worked entries are the appendix's own. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.

⚠ This page carries the practice; the ranking, the definition, the Light argument and the forty-nine-entry census sit on the companion page and are not repeated here. ⚠ Initiates of recurs in every associated-entity list read in this build, and no Initiate, order or conferral is described anywhere in the volume.

⚠ The practice is given with no number, no duration, no frequency, no marker and no endpoint — the only working in the volume specified that loosely. Unresolved: the mentor says a consciousness can help and guide an Apprentice, which is active on the consciousness's part, while the reported practice is entirely one-sided pondering. Nothing states whether anything on the other end is doing anything.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow the framing and this material is out of reach. Beyond the scope of the volume, a subject of more advanced topics, a power so vast and incomprehensible that the appendix exists only because the material's mentor insisted on it. Follow the practice and it is the most accessible thing in the material. Choose a few, think about their work and their activities and who they run with and what they are like, notice where they show up around you. No formula, no object, no hour, no risk, and no way to get it wrong.

Both are stated in the same passage. The unusability is not an obstacle the practice works around — it is the reason the mentor gave it to a beginner, on the grounds that a power nobody can use is exactly what somebody with years ahead of them should start living alongside.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Conventional Ego Stages — Both traditions hold that a person's conduct is shaped less by decisions than by what they habitually hold in mind, and both treat that shaping as slow, cumulative and largely invisible while it happens. The developmental account tracks the change from outside. Stages are described by what a person can and cannot yet do, and movement between them is observed rather than chosen — the person inside a stage is generally the last to see it.

Here the same slowness is turned into a method, and the practitioner supplies the content, which neither corpus notices. A developmental account tells you what happens to people; it cannot tell you what to think about tomorrow morning. This one hands over a list of forty-nine personified concepts, four fields to work each of them on, and an instruction to notice where they show up in the week — and reports the outcome as finding oneself drawn to behave a certain way. What that buys is a lever on something the developmental account describes as happening to you. What it costs is any way of checking, since the only marker either offers is looking back years later and seeing where you ended up.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The instruction was given precisely because it could not be used. A cosmic consciousness is a power so vast and incomprehensible that Wizards should begin to familiarize with them since their very first class — so the beginner gets the thing with nothing to perform, nothing to acquire and nothing that can go wrong, and spends the years of learning everything else with it in mind.

Generative questions.

  • Every consciousness lists Initiates among its associated entities. Is the practice on this page what makes somebody one?
  • The mentor says the consciousness helps and guides. Is anything happening at the other end, or is the pondering the whole of it?
  • No number, no duration, no marker, no end. Is that a gap in the instruction, or the shape the instruction has to have?
