Thirty-Two Universal Laws, and How to Nullify One

What Is Actually Holding a Thing in Existence?

Everything in creation, formation and manifestation is governed by a law, or rather by groups of laws. Which means that everything exists because there are laws present backing up its existence.1 That's the Sixth Ring's premise, and it turns into an operating instruction immediately. This is why a wizard studies these laws: so that you can look at an object, an entity or a concept and find out which laws are actually behind it, giving it existence or reality. And then the sentence the whole ring is built toward — through careful study, a wizard can learn how to nullify laws for certain aspects of reality, and manifest others that will change the physical result of an event.2

So the model isn't that you push on a thing. You find the laws holding it up and you switch one off.

Present, Absent or Latent

A precise mechanic sits behind that, and it is what makes nullification thinkable at all. As the cosmogonic and cosmologic concepts coalesce into the physical world, they start corresponding to conditions and functions. When those conditions and functions are present, a particular law may be present. When they aren't, the law is absent or latent.3

That changes the target. A law isn't a permanent fixture that a wizard overrides by force. It's something that is in effect when its conditions hold, and dormant when they don't. So nullifying a law needn't mean defeating it — it could mean removing the conditions under which it applies, which is a very different and much smaller operation.

Nothing states which of those two is meant. But the conditions-and-functions account is given first and the nullification claim follows from it, which makes the second reading the one the material supports.

Four Families

The thirty-two divide into four groups, and they map onto the four elements and onto the Primary Forces from the cosmology chapter.4

The Laws of Fluidity, or Laws of Change, correspond to Water. These allow change: things always in motion, always changing, always moving. They're also called the Transitive Drive, because they intervene in static things and infuse them with momentum — responsible for everything that moves, from a ticking clock to cars on a motorway to the infinite expansion of the universe.

The Laws of Constants, or Laws of Stillness, are the counterpart. The Laws of Constructs, or Laws of Thought, and the Laws of Transformation, or Magical Alteration, complete the set. Those four names line up exactly with the four Primary Forces — Motion, Immovability, Combination and Mutation — which were given as Water, Earth, Air and Fire with the Laws of Change, Permanency, Constructs and Transmutation. The ring is the earlier cosmology, itemised.

Some Actual Laws

The tables give each law a name and a one-line statement, and a handful are worth having in full because they show what a "law" is here. From Fluidity: Influences — greater forces exert power over lower forces, and the lower are influenced by the greater. Natural Processes — things follow a particular set of processes and nothing occurs by skipping stages, which is the Natura Non Facit Saltus principle from the Virtues ring stated as law. Rhythms — everything has a given note, and if that note is achieved, events corresponding to that note will occur.5

From Constants: Generation — energy is not created or destroyed but exists in the same amount and in countless uniqueness. Infinity Points — there are entities existing as Primary Forces that are eternal, with neither cause nor effect able to end them. Integration — every particle, however independent it seems, is in fact a lesser part of a larger organism. Mentalism — everything is the result of a deliberate mental process, thought formation and physical manifestation. Unitary Energies — at each level of reality there are Primary First Entities existing as generating motors.6

Rhythms has an operation hidden inside it. If achieving a note produces the events belonging to that note, then a wizard who can produce notes has a general-purpose method — and this is a system whose central instrument is the voice, and whose sphere spins at sub-luminal speed producing a hum that perceptive people are said to hear.

Analytical Case Study — Correcting the Kybalion

One footnote does something nothing else here does: it names a real, identifiable published work, and positions this system against it. The Universal Laws were presented ages ago in The Kybalion, a book of hermetic occult knowledge — but back then only seven principles were given. At this moment the apprentice will be presented with all of the Principles or Laws that govern the Universe.7 The Kybalion is real, published in 1908 by three anonymous authors under "the Three Initiates", and it does present seven principles. It is a New Thought-era work rather than an ancient one, and "ages ago" is a century.

More importantly, this is an upgrade claim: seven was partial, thirty-two is complete. It is the one place in the whole curriculum where a specific outside authority gets engaged rather than gestured at, and the engagement supersedes it. 🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION, since a modern work is positioned as the older, lesser statement of a tradition now being completed.

The thirty-two do contain the Kybalion's material. Mentalism is one of its seven, named identically, and Rhythm is another. So nothing here is fabricated. It is a genuine expansion of a specific list, offered as a restoration rather than as an addition.

The Laws Bundle, and They Take Sides

One detail about how laws behave in groups is the most usable thing in the section. The more a wizard knows about these laws, the better they'll understand how the laws group together — which ones are usually joined or bundled up in matrices like constructs. And then the useful half: many of these constructs are usually in favour of a particular aspect, and many others usually oppose that same aspect.8

So laws don't arrive singly. They come in bundles, the bundles have orientations, and any given thing has both supporting and opposing bundles attached to it. That's what makes the nullification instruction tractable: you're not looking for the one law holding something up, you're looking at a contest between a bundle that sustains it and a bundle that doesn't.

Telling Two Laws Apart

The discrimination problem is real and visible in the tables. Generation and Unitary Energies both concern conserved primary sources. Integration and Mentalism both concern everything being part of one larger process. In a live situation those pairs would look identical, and the instruction is explicit that many of these laws seem alike although they are not. Misidentifying one is the named failure, which makes this ring the only one whose difficulty is stated as discrimination rather than as selection.

Implementation Workflow — Learning to See a Law

The practice for this ring is observational and it runs continuously, not in sessions. Try to see these laws acting all around reality. When you spot one, observe it, weigh it and ponder it — every time. The stated payoff is familiarity: in time you'll learn to distinguish which particular law is behind an activity, because everything is regulated by universal laws and the person just has to look better for them.9

Then the hard part, stated precisely. Do this with care, because many of these laws actually seem to be alike, although they are not. The difference between them has to be spotted and held apart, so that in time you learn which laws are present and which are not. Telling them apart is genuinely hard, and you can see why in the tables. Generation and Unitary Energies both concern conserved primary sources. Integration and Mentalism both concern everything being part of one process. Telling them apart in a live situation is the skill, and the instruction is that misidentifying them is the common failure.

Selection comes last, and it's the same procedure as the two rings before: study the thirty-two, then select eight for the first layer of the Sixth Ring, and place them against the eight directions.10 No formula is given for this ring — no hint like Esophoros', no recipe like the Archetypes'. The balance is left entirely to the practitioner.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The thirty-two laws and their four families are asserted with no tradition named beyond the Kybalion reference, and nothing is quoted. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.

🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION. A 1908 New Thought text is presented as the older, partial statement that this book completes. ⚠ The law tables are printed as figures and this edition's conversion runs some entries together. The Fluidity and Constants entries quoted here are legible; re-check the plate before quoting others.

Unresolved: the nullification claim is the ring's payload and no procedure is given for it anywhere in the range read. The reader is told a wizard can learn to nullify laws, and never told how. Also unresolved: this ring alone gets no selection formula, in a chapter where the two preceding rings each get one.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow the conditions-and-functions account and laws are conditional. A law is present when its conditions hold and latent when they don't, so magic works by arranging conditions — which is modest, mechanical, and consistent with everything else in the sphere. Follow the nullification sentence and laws are targets. A wizard learns to nullify laws for certain aspects of reality and to manifest other ones, which reads as acting on the law itself rather than on its conditions.

The two are a paragraph apart. One describes a practitioner who changes situations so that different laws apply; the other describes one who switches laws off. The first is what the rest of the curriculum supports and the second is what the sentence says, and nothing chooses.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Adaptive Scaling and the Siddhis — Both traditions have to explain how an unusual result happens without simply asserting that rules break. The answer here is precise and worth having: nothing is suspended by force. Laws are present when their conditions and functions hold, latent when they don't, and a wizard works by knowing which laws hold a thing up and removing what sustains them.

The Indian material handles the same problem by scaling — capacities appear in proportion to what a practitioner has become, so the extraordinary result is not a broken rule but a different practitioner meeting the same rules.

Between them they hold two ways to keep a lawful universe while still allowing the impossible, and they differ on where the change happens. One puts the change into the situation — alter the conditions, and a different law applies to the same person. The other relocates it into the person: leave the conditions alone, and a changed practitioner meets them differently. A tradition that changes conditions produces technicians, and one that changes practitioners produces adepts — and that is why a beginner here can be handed seventy-eight incantations that work with very little experience, while the other tradition can hand anybody nothing at all.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. Existence here is held up by laws, so the operative question about any object, event or person is which laws are currently backing it. And because a law is present only when its conditions and functions hold, the whole art points at conditions rather than at things — you don't push on the situation, you remove what the law needs in order to apply.

Generative questions.

  • Nullification is the ring's payload and no procedure appears. Is that the material deferred to later volumes, or is the conditions account already the answer?
  • Rhythms says that achieving a note produces the events belonging to it. In a system whose instrument is the voice and whose sphere hums, is that a general method hiding in a one-line law?
  • This ring gets no selection formula while the two before it do. Is the omission deliberate, and what would a balanced eight look like across Fluidity, Constants, Constructs and Transformation?
