Magical Symbols, Somatic Movements and Sekinoth

What Is in a Spell Besides the Words?

Read the spellbook and a working looks like a phrase, a psalm and a name. Say the three, and something happens. The preamble says that is one quarter of it. These somatic movements, the symbols, the voice and the knowledge acquired regarding the incantation form the four elemental aspects of magical casting needed to properly perform the magical arts.1

Four aspects. Movement, symbol, voice, knowledge — and only one of those is what comes out of your mouth. The printed formula is what the voice says; the other three are a drawn figure, a set of movements, and understanding what you are doing.

The Four Aspects, and Which Ones This Volume Teaches

Take the four in order and check them against what a reader of this material actually gets. Voice is taught. Four registers, each with its qualities, its training exercise and its prohibition.

Knowledge is taught. Eight study disciplines, ten trades, a cosmology, and an effect paragraph on every incantation. Symbols are named and not printed. Every incantation is said to have one, and no spellbook entry carries a figure.

Somatic movements are named and not specified. Every incantation is said to have them, and not one movement is described anywhere in the ranges read in this build. ⚠ So half of what the volume calls the elemental aspects of casting is present, and half is named and withheld. Which is stated plainly a few lines earlier: in this manual we shall only provide the Apprentice with the simplest form of an incantation or orison.

Simplest form. The entries carry the words, the psalm and the celestial, and the two visual-physical aspects are left out by design.

The Symbol Is a Portrait, and It Is Carried

The definition of the magical symbol is short and it states three separate things. The first one is a graphic representation of the celestial entities involved in the magical operation.

A representation of the beings. Not of the effect, not of the words — of who is doing the work. Then a physical instruction: these symbols must be carried by the Wizard, because they are in essence the physical form of the spell.

Carried. Which puts a symbol in the same category as the consecrated item a protection charm requires, and gives it the same practical demand — it has to exist as an object and stay with you. And the third clause is about attention: the symbols represent the physical existence of the spell in question and help the Wizard in knowing where to focus its magical energies and attentions.

Where to focus. So the drawn figure is also a target — the practitioner looks at it and knows where to put the effort. A footnote adds the medium: usually the symbol of an angel, intelligence or goodly spirit, these symbols are traced in the air with the use of a Magical Wand.

⚠ Which means a symbol exists twice. Once as a carried object, and once traced in the air at the moment of casting — the same operation the wand section calls Tracing the Siglae, and the same claim that the tracing happens in the subtler levels rather than in the air.

Analytical Case Study — Who the Symbol Is a Portrait Of

The symbol is defined as a graphic representation of the celestial entities involved, and the entry immediately before it names them. Three roles, per incantation, and each does a different job. The Conclave Angel is the senior prince and archangel which conforms the spiritual structure of the incantation in itself. And the gloss: this angel is the very matrix and form of the spell in the spiritual world.

The spell is this angel, on the other side. Not a being that performs it — the shape of the working itself. The Regent Angel is the celestial intelligence which connects the rest of the celestials involved in the incantation. And what that connection does: it connects the incantation with the laws of the universe and permits communication between the universe, the incantation and the Wizard.

A switchboard. Three parties — universe, incantation, wizard — and this being is what lets them talk. The Ministering Angelic Spirits are the celestial entities which rule each independent aspect of the incantation and give it form and action.

The workforce. One per aspect of the effect, and they are what turn a form into an action. ⚠ Read the three together and an incantation is a staffed structure rather than a phrase. One being is its shape, one being is its wiring, and a number of beings run its parts — and the symbol a practitioner carries is a picture of that arrangement.

Which explains the definition exactly. A symbol is the physical form of the spell because the spell's real form is a set of beings, and the drawn figure is what that set looks like on paper. ⚠ And the entry names the method by which they are known: through several magical and Kabbalistic formulas, each incantation reveals a great number of angels and celestials. Reveals — the roster is derived from the incantation rather than assigned to it, which is the Kabbalist trade's work.

Somatic Movements Take Hold of Parts of the Universe

The second aspect is the body, and the claim attached is the largest in the entry. Somatic movements are the magical movements associated with the incantation, and they represent the energies in the universe being harnessed by the power of voice and intention.

Then the mechanism, stated concretely: by tracing such movements with a wand, the Apprentice is actually harnessing several parts of the Universe, worlds in the Tree of Life, sephiroth, planets and stars. Four kinds of thing, taken hold of by a hand movement. Worlds, Sephiroth, planets, stars.

And the result: thus it is actually giving substance to a very powerful magical form. Giving substance. Which is the same job the symbol does — the symbol is the physical form of the spell, and the movement gives that form substance. One draws it and the other fills it.

Then the summary, and it is deliberately provisional: for the moment it must suffice to understand that every movement done when casting a spell accounts to the harnessing of truly marvelous universal energies. For the moment it must suffice. Which is this material telling a reader that the real content is elsewhere.

Every movement. Which means there is no neutral gesture during a casting — the same claim the Artificium chapter makes when it states a wizard is a representation of the Universe on a smaller scale and every position corresponds to an aspect of the Cosmos.

The Sekinoth

The third element gets one sentence in a footnote and it is the most specific and least developed thing in the entry. A Sekinoth is a position the fingers in the hands assume to work a particular incantation.

A finger position. For a particular incantation — so these are not general gestures but one per formula, in the way a chord shape belongs to one chord. Every incantation is said to have one. Take into consideration that every incantation has a magical level, a psalm and the celestial entity in charge of the operation. Also they have magical symbols, sekinoth and a detailed description of the operation.

Six things per incantation, then. Level, psalm, celestial, symbol, sekinoth, description. The spellbook prints four of them and the two it omits are the symbol and the sekinoth — the two you would have to see.

⚠ Not one sekinoth is described anywhere in the ranges read in this build. The word appears twice in the whole volume: once in a list, and once in the footnote defining it. ⚠ And the term itself is unusual. It resembles the Hebrew Shekhinah, the divine presence, which is a feminine noun for an indwelling rather than a hand position. Whether the resemblance is intended is not stated.

What the Simplest Form Leaves Out

Set the six components against the printed entries and the shape of the omission is exact. Printed: the magical level — first or second, stated at the head of each section. The psalm. The celestial. And the detailed description, which is the effect paragraph.

Withheld: the magical symbol, and the sekinoth. Both of the withheld ones are visual. One is a figure you would have to see drawn; the other is a hand you would have to see held.

⚠ Which is the same absence the Orison anatomy shows from the other direction — of its eight named parts, the two entirely missing from the spellbook are the magical seals and symbols and the pronunciation. Put the two lists together and what a printed book cannot carry is what this practice leaves out: a drawn figure, a hand shape, and a sound. And the reason given is pedagogical rather than protective: the simplest form is provided so that the Apprentice learns each incantation by heart and mind. Only after that is the apprentice ready to work with the heavier side of High Magic, which is to deal with the spiritual entities and intelligences governing each incantation.

So the symbols and the sekinoth belong to the stage where you start dealing with the beings directly — which is exactly the stage the volume says an apprentice is not ready for.

Implementation Workflow — Working the Four Aspects

Learn what you can and know what is missing. Of the four elemental aspects of casting, the voice and the knowledge are taught here in full. The symbol and the movement are named and withheld.

For the voice: the four registers and their training. For the knowledge: the effect paragraph on each incantation, the schools, and the study disciplines — and the entry is explicit that knowledge is a component of casting rather than preparation for it. For symbols, work with what the volume does give. The figure is a graphic representation of the celestial entities involved, it is meant to be carried as an object, it is traced in the air with the wand, and it tells you where to put your attention. The named grimoires — the Mathers Key of Solomon above all — are where a practitioner would find actual figures.

For movements, understand the claim before attempting anything. A traced movement is described as taking hold of worlds, Sephiroth, planets and stars, and every movement during a casting counts. No movement is specified anywhere, so there is nothing here to copy.

And treat the sekinoth as noted rather than available. One finger position per incantation, defined once in a footnote, and never shown.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The four aspects, the symbol and movement definitions, the three angelic roles and the sekinoth footnote are all in the spellbook preamble. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.

⚠ No magical symbol is printed and no somatic movement or sekinoth is described anywhere in the ranges read in this build, and every incantation is said to have all three. ⚠ Sekinoth resembles the Hebrew Shekhinah and is used here for a hand position. The resemblance is noted and not claimed.

⚠ The Conclave Angel, the Regent Angel and the Ministering Angelic Spirits are named once, in this preamble, and none is named for any specific incantation in the spellbook — which prints one celestial per entry rather than three roles. Unresolved: the roster of angels is said to be revealed by the incantation through Kabbalistic formulas. Those formulas are the ones the reading-list chapter says are given only to the most trusted student.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow the four aspects and casting is a whole-body operation. A figure carried and traced, a hand held in a position, a voice in a trained register, and an understanding of what is being done — four things at once, and the words are only what the voice carries. Follow what is printed and casting is reading aloud. A Latin phrase, a psalm, a named celestial, and an effect paragraph. Nothing to draw, nothing to hold, nothing to shape with the fingers.

Both are in the same preamble, a paragraph apart. The volume defines the practice as four-fold and then supplies two of the four, on the stated grounds that the apprentice should learn the words by heart first — which leaves every incantation in the material, by its own account, being cast at half.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Zero handshakes on this page. The material is one system's account of the non-verbal components of its own casting, and the connection that would earn its place — tracing as inscription rather than gesture — is carried inside this build by the wand pages, where the same claim is worked at the scale of a single figure.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. A magical symbol is a graphic representation of the celestial entities involved in the magical operation, and the beings it represents are named a paragraph earlier: one angel that is the very matrix and form of the spell in the spiritual world, one that connects the incantation to the laws of the universe, and a set that rule its separate parts. So the drawn figure is not a sign for the spell. It is a picture of the staff.

Generative questions.

  • One sekinoth per incantation, and not one is shown. Was there ever a plate?
  • The Conclave Angel is the spell's form on the other side. What is a spell, then, when nobody is casting it?
  • Voice and knowledge are taught; symbol and movement are withheld. Is that a limit of print, or a gate?
