Nereus, the Shapeshifting Chi Blob

Think of Fire, and It Becomes Fire

There is a phenomenon at the release stages that responds instantly to whatever you think.

"Something resembling a living chi 'blob' might suddenly appear in a colorful vision like a lucid dream… somehow it will instantly respond to your thoughts… Think of fire, and it becomes fire; think of emeralds, and it becomes emeralds; think of metal or water, and it seems to become metal or water in the imagination."1

Instant, and total. Whatever you bring to mind, it becomes — with no lag, no resistance and no partial version.

When it happens: "as the layers of chi surrounding the chakras and channels are released during the purification process."1 So it belongs to the unwinding cycle rather than to a stage of its own. See Wrestling Is Unwinding.

How long: "the experience passes in minutes."1

And how often: "it actually may occur several times over the course of these labors."2

Unlike Anything Else You Will See

The reason this one is singled out is that it does not behave like the other visions.

It is "so extraordinary and unlike any other previous visions to this time that, like the shapeshifting Nereus, it is something you will always remember."1

What makes it different is the interactivity. Every other phenomenon in this material is something shown to you — a dome of stars, a rising structure, blue pearls, demons. This one answers.

Which is why it registers as extraordinary and why it is remembered. You are not watching something; you are operating something, and finding that it obeys immediately.

And the standing classification still applies: "it is not actually a real event but just another testing vision given to an individual."1 See The Visions Are Fictitious.

What It Is Demonstrating

The purpose is stated, and it is instructional rather than incidental.

"The experience demonstrates the pliancy of the mind, the imaginative capabilities of consciousness and what one can accomplish through nirmanakaya capabilities once mastered, but practitioners do not realize it at that moment."1

Three things being shown, and the third is the largest:

The pliancy of the mind — that it can take any form on demand.

The imaginative capabilities of consciousness.

And a preview of nirmanakaya capability — the emanation-body attainment, in which projections of consciousness can take any form at all. See The Helpful Thought Is a Nirmanakaya.

But practitioners do not realize it at that moment. Which is the honest and useful part. The demonstration lands as a marvel rather than as a lesson, and the meaning is only available afterwards — or from a page like this one, in advance.

The Lesson Is About the Mind, Not the Blob

Read as a marvel, it is a curiosity. Read as it is offered, it is a demonstration of the same principle deity yoga exists to teach.

That practice entails "visualizing colorful Buddhas or deities until the meditator attains stabilization and by this accomplishment realizes that the deity and the practitioner are in essence the same."4

Its stated aims: stable one-pointed concentration, opening of the chi channels, more pliant visualisation capabilities, and wisdom insight into emptiness.4

And the payoff: "by realizing that one's environment is basically their mind, and by identifying with a visualization, through this route practitioners can abandon the fixed mental habit that reality is something solid 'out there.'"4

Which is exactly what the blob demonstrates in a few minutes and without any training. Something apparently outside you turns out to take whatever form your mind gives it.

The difference is that deity yoga makes it stick and the blob does not. One is a practice with an outcome; the other is a few minutes of vivid evidence that you were not looking for.

Analytical Case Study: A Preview With No Instruction

Worth setting out, because the structure is unusual for this material.

Most phenomena carry no meaning. Clicks, lights, voices — noted and ignored, with the content explicitly worthless.

This one carries a specific teaching, is described as memorable by design, and is a preview of an attainment described as a requirement for complete Buddhahood.

And nothing is to be done about it. No instruction is given: not to prolong it, not to experiment with it, not to practise anything during it. It arrives, it responds, it passes in minutes.

Which leaves a strange item: a deliberately instructive experience whose lesson is not available until later, with no action attached.

The one thing it does supply is conviction rather than information. A practitioner who has watched something become fire on a thought has had the solidity of the world contradicted directly — which is the belief that deity yoga spends years dislodging.

[SPECULATIVE] 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE — one practitioner, one description, no other account.

Implementation Workflow

If it happens, notice what it teaches rather than what it does. The forms are not the content; the responsiveness is.

Do not try to prolong it. It passes in minutes and nothing suggests it can be held — and holding is the standing error at every release stage. See Minos and the Refusal to Let Go.

Do not treat it as an attainment. It is a testing vision, in the same category as everything else shown at these stages, and it indicates the layers are releasing rather than that you have achieved anything.

Do not experiment with it as a power. Nothing is offered about using it, and the nearest analogue in this material — chasing capacities produced by the process — is the standard route into the form-school failure. See The Form School's Catastrophe.

And expect it more than once. Several times across the labors, which means the first is not special.

Why Nereus Fits the Reading

The Greek figure is used with a specific property, and it is worth noting which one.

Nereus is caught to reveal the location of the Garden of the Hesperides. "As Hercules grabbed him tight, Nereus turned himself into all kinds of shapes in an attempt to escape but to no avail. Hercules didn't release the sea god until he got the information he needed."3

The shapeshifting is the matching feature — the thing that takes any form under pressure.

Which is a constrained identification rather than a free one: not that a sea god appears in a vision, but that the story's distinguishing property is instant unlimited transformation, and so is the phenomenon's.

Two things worth marking about the fit.

The direction differs. Nereus changes shape to escape; the blob changes shape in response to you. Which is not the same relation.

And what Hercules wanted was information. He held on until he got directions. Whereas the practitioner is told nothing, gets no information, and is not supposed to hold on at all.

So the fit is on the transformation and not on the transaction — which is worth being precise about, because the story's own point is the holding-on that the practice forbids.

Why the Chi Is Loose at That Moment

The timing is not arbitrary, and it explains why this happens here and nowhere else.

It occurs as the layers of chi around the chakras and channels are being released.1

Which is the one point in the cycle when the material is between states — no longer bound around the channels, not yet ejected, and momentarily unattached to anything.

Which would account for the responsiveness. Chi goes where the mind wills it, on this framework's governing rule — and chi that is currently wrapped around a channel is committed, while chi that has just come loose is not.

So the blob is the freed layer, briefly available to take whatever form attention gives it, before it rises and goes.

Which fits the other properties. It passes in minutes — the same duration the released structures take to depart. It recurs several times across the labors — once per release cycle, which is how often the layers come off. And it appears at no other stage, because at no other stage is there loose material to shape. See The Impure Illusory Body.

[SPECULATIVE] — the connection is the vault's; the source gives the timing and the responsiveness separately and never joins them.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — no version of the Nereus episode is cited. [SPECULATIVE].

Tension — a testing vision with a curriculum. It is classified with the fictitious content and it is said to demonstrate three specific things, one of which is a preview of a Buddhahood requirement.

Tension — memorable by design, and to be ignored. The material notes that you will always remember it, in a framework whose instruction on visions is to disregard them.

Open question — what is being tested? It is called a testing vision and nothing is said about what the test measures or what passing would look like.

Open question — why does it respond at all? Every other phenomenon is a display. No account is given of what makes this one interactive, which is its only distinguishing feature.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two things this experience is said to be, and they sit oddly together.

Nothing. Not a real event, a testing vision, the same category as demons and heavens, to be disregarded like the rest.

And a preview of the third body of a Buddha. Demonstrating what nirmanakaya capability is, which is named elsewhere as a requirement for complete and perfect enlightenment.

Which is a large amount of significance to attach to something classified as scenery — and the material resolves it only by noting that practitioners miss the point at the time.

The convergence is with the deity-yoga material, and it is exact: both exist to break the habit of taking the world as solid, one by years of practice and one by a few minutes of unmistakable demonstration.

Which makes this the rare case where a phenomenon and a technique are aimed at the same realisation — and the phenomenon arrives free.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Suggestology and the Science of Subliminal Suggestion — behavioral mechanics.

Suggestion operates most powerfully where the subject does not register that anything is being supplied. Two things carry.

Content accepted without the sense of having accepted it produces stronger conviction than argument does. Because there is no moment of evaluation, there is nothing for later doubt to attach to — the material arrives already believed.

And the state matters more than the content. A receptive condition — relaxation, reduced critical monitoring, unusual sensory circumstances — is what makes the suggestion take, and the same words in an ordinary state have no such effect.

Which describes this experience precisely, and it explains why it is remembered when other visions are not.

A thought produces a form, instantly, with no gap. There is no moment in which you propose fire and then observe the result — the proposing and the appearing are one event, and that seamlessness removes exactly the interval where evaluation would occur.

Which means the demonstration is not being argued for. It is being installed. And the resulting conviction — that appearances follow mind — is held without ever having been assessed, which is why it persists and why the source expects it to be remembered for life.

The second finding names the condition. This occurs during a release phase, in a lucid-dream-like state, with the ordinary regulation of perception loosened — which is the receptive state the suggestion literature describes, arriving without anyone arranging it.

Practical form: an insight that arrives with no interval for evaluation will be held with unusual confidence and unusual durability — which is worth knowing whether or not it happens to be correct, because the confidence is a fact about the delivery.

The Live Edge

What the source leaves undetermined is whose mind the blob is responding to.

The description is that it "instantly responds to your thoughts" — which presupposes a thing, separate from you, that receives and complies.

And the stated lesson is the opposite: that the environment is basically your mind, and that the habit of taking reality as solid and out there is the thing being broken.

On that lesson there is no blob. There is your own consciousness taking forms, and the appearance of something external obeying you is the last remnant of exactly the error the experience is supposed to correct.

Which would make the phenomenon a half-measure by design. A practitioner who could see that there was nothing there would not need the demonstration, and one who needs it will experience it as an obedient external object — which teaches responsiveness while preserving the separation.

The material describes the object, states the lesson, and never notices that the first contradicts the second.
