God Does Not Test People

Karma Only Happens

The negative claim is stated first and it is blunt.

"Our fundamental nature doesn't 'test' people because it is not a god, deity or personal entity. It is only sentient beings with higher attainments who can choose to help us. In other words, 'God' does not test people, karma only happens. To say that the original self nature is testing you is just nonsense."1

The argument is from what the referent is. The original nature is not a person, does not have intentions, and therefore cannot be conducting an examination. Testing requires an examiner, and there is nobody in that position.

Karma only happens is the positive replacement, and happens is doing the work. Not administered, not sent, not calibrated to your development. A process with consequences and no author.

Which removes an entire interpretive frame that practitioners bring to difficulty by default. The hard thing is not a message, not a curriculum, and not aimed at you. There is no lesson to extract and no examiner whose satisfaction would end it.

And the practical payoff is that a whole class of questions dissolves. Why is this happening to me. What am I supposed to learn. What does this mean. On this account those questions have no answers because they have no addressee — and the time spent on them is time spent addressing nobody.

Except Somebody Is Still Doing It

Then the reassignment, which is the part that makes this page more than a negation.

"Only a being, such as a Buddha, Bodhisattva, heavenly deity dharma protector (what you would normally call an angel, deva or dakini and daki), or human would interact with virtuous spiritual practitioners in regards to the Tao. They already know ahead of time who's qualified for assistance but must still put practitioners through difficult experiences, such as Abraham's or Naropa's, to see which sets of channels should be opened first."1

The testing is not denied. It is moved. From the ultimate to intermediate beings — which is a smaller claim metaphysically and a larger one practically, because these beings do have intentions and are described as acting on them.

And the stated purpose is technical rather than moral. They already know who is qualified. The difficulty is not an examination of your worthiness — that question is settled before it starts. It is a diagnostic: to see which sets of channels should be opened first.

That reframes the entire category. A hardship is not a test in the sense of pass or fail. It is a probe — something applied to find out how the system responds, so that the next intervention can be chosen.

Which is exactly how you would investigate a structure you cannot see directly: apply a load, observe where it gives, and work on that. The practitioner's response to a difficulty is the reading being taken.

And the duration follows from the purpose: the assistance and testings last a long time because purification does.1 A diagnostic that runs alongside a decade-long process runs for a decade.

You Will Never Determine the Methodology

The epistemic position given to the practitioner is unusually explicit, and it comes with a stated use.

"You will never be able to figure out what the Bodhisattvas are doing with your chi and channels and why you are mentally being tested in all sorts of ways. They will test you, this way and that, so that they may determine what needs to be done, but you will never be able to determine the methodology. But with these words you will be able to keep your balance and sanity through the process."5

Never — not at first, not without training. Permanent opacity, stated as a design feature.

And the offered benefit is not understanding but stability: keep your balance and sanity through the process.

Which is a modest and honest account of what this doctrine is for. It does not explain anything. It supplies a frame that survives the absence of explanation — you are not being punished, you are not failing, and the incomprehensibility is expected rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.

The same holds for the availability of the assistance: it "is not easy to obtain, it is never understood when received, and rarely discussed in full measure because common people would fear it and not believe it either."4

Never understood when received. So the practitioner cannot identify assistance while it is arriving, cannot identify a test while it is running, and cannot reconstruct the methodology afterwards. The only thing available is the frame.

Which makes this doctrine functionally identical to the instruction about visions — you are told what a class of experience is, told you cannot verify it, and told to continue. See The Visions Are Fictitious.

The Blockages Clear Regardless

The decoupling is the sharpest practical content here, and it resolves what would otherwise be an impossible position.

"You will see all sorts of things such as attacks by demons, visits by other beings, trips to heaven and hell, that are all fictitious visions. You should never believe anything you hear via 'heavenly voices' during these experiences either, but every time you go through some difficulty due to these interventions yet more channel blockages will disappear and your chi and channels will further transform."6

Two halves, and the but between them is the whole instruction.

The content is false. Demons, beings, heavens, hells, voices — fictitious, and none of it to be believed.

And the effect is real. Going through the difficulty clears blockages regardless.

Which means the practitioner does not need to evaluate any of it. The benefit is not conditional on identifying what happened, believing the right thing about it, or extracting a lesson. You go through it and the channels transform — and that would be equally true if the whole apparatus of beings were wrong.

That is the most usable sentence on the page, and it is also where the flag belongs. 🚩 MOTIVATED REASONING — a doctrine in which every difficulty is an intervention that produces progress cannot be disconfirmed by any difficulty, and it converts adverse experience into evidence of assistance automatically.

Analytical Case Study: Abraham, Hui Ko, Naropa, Socrates

Four figures from four traditions are assimilated to one process, and the case is worth taking apart because the four are of very unequal strength.

The twelve hardships of Naropa, the empowerments of Yeshe Tsogyel, the testing of Abraham, Hui Ko's voice and Socrates' daemons "are all linked to chi and channel purification in conjunction with 'heavenly' (Bodhisattva) assistance."3

Hui Ko is the strongest. He hears a voice telling him it would not last long "as he endured the pain of the chi penetrating through his skull bones."2 The physical event is named in the report itself — chi through the skull — and it matches a stage described independently in this material. The voice is incidental; the cranial pain is the content. See Cranial Opening Is a Different Pain.

Naropa is the structural case. Twelve major hardships, overseen by Tilopa — a documented sequence, supervised by a named teacher, of graded ordeals with no stated purpose. A twelve-part sequence is the right shape for a diagnostic protocol, and the argument leans on that shape rather than on any single episode.

Abraham is the argued case, and the argument is an inference from character. He is said to have gone through other testings the Bible did not recount, "otherwise it makes no sense that an intelligent man would follow voices he hears in his head."2 That is reasoning from what the story omits — the single reported event is called "just a subset of the overall process represented by Naropa's example."3 Which is a reconstruction, and it is the weakest move here: the absence of other episodes is being read as evidence that they occurred.

Socrates is the thinnest. From his "chorus of inner daemons" and his enlightenment, "we can surmise that Socrates must have gone through this type of experience."2 We can surmise and must have are carrying the whole case.

So the four are: one with a matching physical detail, one with a matching structure, one reconstructed from a silence, and one surmised. They are presented as equivalent instances.

Which is the standard hazard of a decoding method with wide scope. The set looks like convergent evidence and is a graded series — and the strong member is doing work the weak members then inherit. [n=1 STRONG, n=3 ASSERTED]. See Scripture as Projection Record.

Implementation Workflow

When something hard arrives during a period of real practice, run the frame and then drop the question.

Do not ask what it means. The stated position is that nothing is being communicated and that you could not decode it if it were. The interpretive effort is the wasted part.

Do not treat it as an examination you might fail. Qualification is described as settled in advance. The difficulty is diagnostic, not evaluative — it is finding out which channels to work on, not deciding whether you deserve it.

Do not believe the voices. Named separately and absolutely: never believe anything you hear. This is the one instruction with no qualification anywhere in the surrounding material.

Do not fight the frightening content. Attacks by demons are on the fictitious list. Resisting converts a passing event into a project.

And keep practising through it, because that is the only variable you control and the only one the account says matters. The blockages clear from going through the difficulty, not from understanding it.

One structural move, if the stage allows it: interruption at this point is expensive — "once the momentum of transformations has begun, any interruptions in practice can severely delay the entire sequence of transformations. This is why one should go into retreat at this time."7 The difficulties cluster where continuity matters most.

And know why the frame is being supplied at all. The process is normally completed "within a sealed retreat under the watchful eyes of a master who is present," with explanations offered here because most practitioners "will not have the teachings or an enlightened master available to help them."8 This doctrine is a substitute for a person who would have told you at the time.

The Right View Comes First

The gate placed on the whole business is stated at the end and it is the most consequential instruction here.

Aside from practising virtuous ways, desiring spiritual progress and cultivating sufficiently, "you really need the 'right view' if you want to succeed in great awakening. It is safe to really throw yourself into cultivating the body only after attaining the right view of realizing that your true mind is ultimately empty, that you are not the physical body, and there is no such thing as an inherently existing person."9

Three components of the right view, and each does specific work against the failure modes of this territory.

Your true mind is ultimately empty — so there is nothing to defend and no state to hold.

You are not the physical body — so the transformations are happening to something that is not you, which is exactly the stance that makes them tolerable without interpretation.

There is no inherently existing person — so there is nobody being tested, which is the same conclusion the page opens with, arrived at from the practitioner's side rather than from the deity's.

And the word is safe. Not effective, not permitted. The right view is being described as a safety precondition for intensive body work — and the danger it protects against is presumably the one this page catalogues: a person deep in physical transformation, with voices and visions arriving, who takes any of it personally.

Which makes the whole doctrine of non-testing a component of the right view rather than a consolation attached to it. A practitioner who holds that there is no one being examined is protected from the material this page describes, and one who does not is exposed to it. See The Impure Illusory Body.

Why Nobody Reports It Properly

A final observation explains why this whole category is thin in the literature.

"Most practitioners only report one or two of the most memorable experiences, and many don't even know that they are going through this transition with 'Heaven's help.'"1

Two separate losses, and they compound.

Under-reporting. A process running for years produces one or two episodes that get told, and the rest is unrecorded — which is why Abraham has one testing on the page and Naropa has twelve.

And non-recognition. Many practitioners do not know it is happening at all, which means their experience never becomes a report of anything.

Which is the same filter described elsewhere for spiritual autobiographies, applied to this category specifically. What survives is the most memorable episode from the minority who noticed — and a single dramatic episode read as the whole is exactly the misreading the Abraham reconstruction is trying to correct.

And it is why the four-figure case study looks the way it does. If every practitioner's record is one or two episodes from a long sequence, then every historical case will be a fragment — and assembling fragments from four traditions into one process is either the correct reconstruction or the inevitable artefact of a method applied to fragments. Nothing distinguishes those.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — no biblical passage for Abraham, no Chan source for Hui Ko, no Platonic text for Socrates, no biography for Naropa or Yeshe Tsogyel. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE. 🚩 MOTIVATED REASONING on the claim that every difficulty clears blockages. [SPECULATIVE].

Tension — no personal deity, and a roster of intervening beings. The argument against divine testing is that the ultimate is not a person. It is immediately followed by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, dharma protectors, devas and dakinis interacting with practitioners deliberately. The metaphysical objection is answered and the practical one is not.

Tension — never believe the voices, and Hui Ko's voice was correct. The absolute instruction not to believe heavenly voices sits beside a case where a voice's content — that it would not last long — is reported approvingly.

Tension — unfalsifiable by construction. Every difficulty is an intervention; every intervention clears blockages; therefore any hardship confirms the model and none tests it.

Open question — what distinguishes an intervention from ordinary misfortune? Nothing offered. Illness, bereavement, professional collapse and a channel-opening probe are, on this account, indistinguishable to the person experiencing them.

Open question — what would right view consist in, checkably? It gates intensive body work and is described only as a realisation. No marker is given.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two positions on agency run through this material and this page holds both within a page of each other.

The process is impersonal. Karma only happens. The original nature is not a person and has no intentions. The stages proceed like puberty, on their own schedule, regardless of tradition or belief. Nobody is running it.

And the process is supervised. Bodhisattvas decide which channels to open first. Beings test you this way and that. Assistance arrives, is difficult to obtain, and is never understood. Deep help comes after you commit.

These are held simultaneously and the reconciliation is a division of labour: the mechanism is impersonal; the assistance is personal. Which works logically and produces an odd practical asymmetry — the impersonal half is the part you can act on, and the personal half is the part you are told you cannot detect, understand, or influence.

The convergence is on what the practitioner does, which is identical under both. Practise, do not interpret, do not act on content, continue. Neither account gives you anything to do differently — which is a strong sign that the disagreement is about description rather than about method.

And it explains why the doctrine is offered explicitly as a stabiliser rather than as information. Its whole function is to prevent a practitioner from doing something on the basis of an experience — and both halves serve that equally well. See Pneumatology Agrees: Ignore Them.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Apocryphal Birth-Prophecy Architecture — history.

The Abraham reconstruction reads a story's silence as evidence of unrecorded events. The Aśokāvadāna case shows the same operation running in the other direction, with the mechanism visible — and it supplies the control this page lacks.

The scene: two boys playing with dirt in a Rājagṛha street. One, named Jaya, drops a handful into the Buddha's begging bowl and wishes to become a king who will honour him. The Buddha turns to Ānanda and prophesies: a hundred years after my death this boy will be born as King Aśoka in Pāṭaliputra, a righteous dharmarāja who will distribute my relics and build the eighty-four thousand dharmarājikas.

The text was composed in the second century CE — roughly four hundred years after the Buddha and two centuries after Aśoka. And it is doing two things at once: narrating a previous life, and making the Buddha personally responsible for prophesying Aśoka's coming. The conversion-arc that follows is not accidental. It has been pre-authorised by the founder.

That is the mechanism this page needs to rule out and does not.

Retroactive authorisation supplies exactly the missing episodes that a reconstruction then finds. The Aśokāvadāna did not have a gap and fill it honestly; it generated the prior event that makes the later one intelligible. Which is what a tradition does with a figure whose story does not otherwise make sense — and it makes no sense that an intelligent man would follow voices in his head is precisely the kind of incoherence that invites the operation.

Two things fall out.

The Abraham inference and the Aśoka prophecy have the same logical shape. Both start from an outcome that seems unmotivated, and both supply an unrecorded prior process that motivates it. One is being performed here as scholarship and the other is documented as composition — and nothing in the reasoning distinguishes them.

And the strong cases do not protect the weak ones. Hui Ko's cranial pain is a real matching detail. Aśoka was a real king who really built stūpas. A verified endpoint does not verify the prior sequence invented to explain it, which is the specific error the Aśokāvadāna demonstrates and the specific move the Abraham section makes.

The insight neither field produces alone: a reconstruction from silence is indistinguishable from the tradition's own habit of manufacturing prior authorisation — and where the reconstruction is being performed by someone inside the framework it supports, the two are not merely similar procedures. They are the same procedure, at different distances from the text.

The Live Edge

The unresolved thing is what a practitioner does with a difficulty that is not an intervention.

The doctrine's coverage is total. Every hardship during practice is a Bodhisattva probing which channels to open; every difficulty clears blockages; the methodology is permanently opaque; nothing you experience can disconfirm any of it.

Which leaves no category for ordinary misfortune, and ordinary misfortune does not stop happening because someone took up meditation. Illness, bereavement, financial collapse, a relationship ending, a genuine mistake with real consequences — all of these will occur during a decade of practice, and the frame absorbs every one of them.

The absorption has a cost that is not acknowledged. A person reading a serious illness as a channel-opening intervention may not seek treatment. A person reading a collapsing relationship as a test may not examine their own conduct in it. The doctrine's stabilising function and its capacity to misclassify are the same property.

Three things would resolve it and none is offered. A marker distinguishing an intervention from an event. A statement that some difficulties are simply difficulties. Or an explicit limit — that the frame applies to phenomena arising in practice and not to circumstances arising in a life.

The last of those is probably intended. The examples are all interior: voices, visions, sensations, ordeals inside a supervised process, chi through the skull. Nothing in the four cases is a bereavement or a bankruptcy.

But it is never said, and the sentence that would need to say it — every time you go through some difficulty due to these interventions — is precisely the one that leaves the scope open. Which is where a doctrine designed to keep a practitioner's balance becomes a doctrine that could keep them from doing something they urgently needed to do.
