There are two events that traditions use to mark the transition into the serious phase of the path, and they are not the same event.
The Vajrayana marker: the chi entering and clearing the central channel. Tibetan Buddhism "segments the spiritual path into a generation and completion stage and says the completion stage begins when the chi enters and clears the central channel."1 This is the Fifth Labor.
The Taoist marker: the initiation of the microcosmic circulation — the River Chariot, the ouroboros — beginning to run.
The proposal is to prefer the second: "Perhaps this would be a better signpost or road marker since it already entails the opening of the sushumna and initiation of a chi circulation that can continue on independently if you maintain practice."1
Already entails. The rotation cannot start without the sushumna having opened — so the later marker includes the earlier one and adds something.
The reason for preferring it is the one that matters most to a practitioner working alone.
"This is something you actually feel for yourself without any chance of illusion… whereas you can only know that the chi has entered the central channel in tantric Buddhism due to visionary marks or signs provided by compassionate Bodhisattva dharma protectors."1
Two ways of knowing, and they are not equal.
The Vajrayana marker is known by signs — visionary marks supplied by dharma protectors. Which is exactly the category of content this material elsewhere says is fictitious, culturally furnished, and never to be believed. See The Visions Are Fictitious.
The rotation is felt directly. Without any chance of illusion — the strongest epistemic claim made about any phenomenon in this material.
Which is a genuine argument rather than a preference. A milestone you can only verify through a channel you have been told to distrust is not usable, and the alternative is a bodily event you feel yourself.
The restatement is unambiguous: "Some may not know what progress they have achieved along those lines, but the initiation of this circulation is unmistakable and not subject to illusion."2
A second argument is offered, and it is about coverage rather than certainty.
"If you are looking for a common stage which all schools know, it is this rudimentary commencing of the ouroboros circulation."3
A shared landmark. Which matters if you are trying to compare progress across traditions with incompatible vocabularies — you need an event that every school describes, however differently.
The circulation qualifies because it is physical, felt, and named in Taoism, in the Bible, and in the ouroboros imagery that recurs across cultures.
Which makes it the natural anchor for cross-tradition mapping in a way that a doctrinal stage boundary cannot be. A school's stage divisions are internal bookkeeping. A rotation in the body is the same event wherever it happens. See Every Corpus Aims at One Event.
The claim about what a practitioner has by the time the rotation starts is substantial.
"This is laying the physical foundation for the Tao of the sambhogakaya, and if one reaches this far they will most probably have seen the Tao and realized the truth of non-ego or selflessness we call 'empty mind.' They'll have had some experience of the meaning of 'emptiness.'"2
Three things bundled into the marker:
The sushumna is open — entailed, not inferred.
The physical foundation for the sambhogakaya is laid.
And the practitioner has most probably seen the Tao and had some experience of emptiness.
Which is why it works as a milestone rather than merely as a phenomenon. It certifies a bundle, and the bundle spans both the physical and the realisation sides — which almost nothing else in this material does.
And what it does not certify: the superpowers come much later. "Only after a long time past this stage can one achieve the various superpowers attributed to spiritual adepts."2 See Samadhi Without the Tao.
There is a detail about what happens next that is easy to misread badly.
"About two or three days after the initial opening of this complete circular chi circulation of the River Chariot, or ouroboros, you won't feel the rotation any longer. This means that the major obstructions and blockages within this circulatory orbit have been removed."4
The sensation goes away in two or three days, and its disappearance is the good outcome.
Which is the exact opposite of how a practitioner will read it. You work for years to start a circulation, you feel it begin, and within seventy-two hours it stops being perceptible — and that is success, because friction is what you were feeling and the friction is gone.
The general principle behind it: sensation comes from obstruction. Clear channels produce nothing to feel. See Maitreya's Big Knife Wind.
So the marker is a brief event, not a permanent state — a few days of unmistakable rotation, and then silence that means it is working.
The one region that stays audible longest is the head: "the 'brain breathing' in the head, which includes feeling the chi sensations within the head channels, is particularly difficult to finally silence."5
Aim at the rotation, not at the central-channel entry. It is the later, more inclusive, and directly detectable event — and unlike the alternative it does not require you to trust a vision.
Expect it to be unmistakable. The whole argument for this marker is that you will not be in doubt. If you are wondering whether you have had it, the claim is that you have not.
Then let it go. The instruction after ignition is to stop attending to the body and switch to emptiness practice. See The Match and the Flame.
Do not be alarmed when the sensation stops. Two or three days, and then nothing — which means the obstructions in that orbit are cleared, not that the circulation failed.
Maintain practice to keep it. It "can continue on independently if you maintain practice" — self-sustaining, conditionally.
And ignore the superpower material entirely. It is a long way past this and it is not what the marker indicates.
Worth asking why the central-channel entry became the standard boundary if the rotation is the better one.
It is earlier. Which suits a system that needs to mark the transition into the completion stage rather than the end of it.
It is doctrinally located. Generation and completion is a formal division of the path, and a formal division needs a boundary the tradition's own literature can define.
And it can be certified by a teacher. Visionary signs are reportable to someone who can interpret them, which makes them administrable within a lineage — whereas you will feel it and know requires nothing from anyone.
Which is the underlying difference. The Vajrayana marker is institutionally useful; the Taoist marker is practitioner-useful — and for someone working without a teacher, only one of them functions at all. See There Are No Secrets.
[SPECULATIVE] — the institutional reading is the vault's; the source argues only from detectability.
The phrase deserves its own attention because it names a real and common situation.
A practitioner can have crossed a major threshold and not know it. The chi may have entered the central channel; the signs may have been absent, or present and disbelieved, or present and misread.
Which is a specific harm rather than a mere inconvenience. Someone who does not know they have progressed will keep applying the practices appropriate to an earlier stage — which is the described form-school failure, running body techniques long past the point where they should have been dropped.
A detectable marker prevents that. Not because knowing is satisfying, but because the correct practice changes at the threshold, and you cannot change what you cannot detect.
Which is the practical core of the whole proposal: this is not about giving practitioners a certificate. It is about giving them the one signal that tells them to switch methods.
Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — no Vajrayana or Taoist text is cited for either marker, and the Bible reference is unlocated. [PLAUSIBLE — needs corroboration]. The proposal is explicitly offered as a personal opinion.
Tension — unmistakable, and losable. The rotation is claimed to be beyond illusion and also to bog down, stall and need restarting elsewhere, which suggests a graded phenomenon.
Tension — feel it, then don't. The marker's whole value is that it is felt, and within days there is nothing to feel; a practitioner who arrives late to their own threshold has missed the window entirely.
Open question — what if you miss the two or three days? If the only detectable form of the marker lasts seventy-two hours, someone distracted through it has no way afterwards to establish that it happened.
Open question — what does the head's persistence mean? Brain breathing outlasting everything is stated and never interpreted.
Two things this material does with markers, and they pull against each other.
It supplies them. A detailed phenomenology, stage by stage, with the express purpose of letting a solo practitioner know where they are — and here, an argument for choosing the marker that is most reliably detectable.
And it says not to watch for them. Ignore the body, ignore the sensations, gongfu is a signpost and not the road, and attending to the physical is how most practitioners lose decades.
The reconciliation is a matter of timing rather than doctrine: you need to recognise the threshold when it arrives and not spend the intervening years watching for it. Which is a fine distinction to ask of someone who has just been told the exact sensation to expect.
The convergence is with the general preference for what a practitioner can verify without an intermediary — no lineage, no signs, no interpreter. The best marker is the one that needs nobody.
Brand Equity Metrics Beyond Purchase: Hook Rate and Retention — business.
Choosing what to measure is a decision about behaviour, not about accuracy. Two things carry.
A metric earlier in the chain is more actionable than a metric closer to the outcome, because it moves sooner and can still be acted on — but only if it is genuinely observable rather than inferred.
And an unobservable metric gets replaced by proxies, which then get optimised in place of the thing itself. The proxy becomes the target, and the target quietly stops being measured.
Which is the exact structure of the choice here. The central-channel entry is the earlier signal and it is not directly observable — so it is certified by proxies, namely visionary signs, and the proxies are supplied by a channel this material otherwise treats as unreliable.
The rotation is later and directly observable. Which trades earliness for reliability, and the argument is that for this decision reliability wins — because the decision the marker drives is switch methods now, and getting that wrong in either direction is costly.
The second point sharpens the risk in the alternative. Once a marker is certified by signs, practitioners will start producing and interpreting signs — which is a description of exactly what the esoteric schools are elsewhere accused of doing.
Practical form: prefer the observable late signal over the inferred early one whenever the signal's job is to trigger a change in behaviour — and treat any metric that can only be certified by an interpreter as a metric that will eventually be gamed.
What the source leaves undetermined is what happens to a practitioner who has the rotation and does not recognise it.
The whole proposal rests on the event being unmistakable. And the same passages say the sensation lasts two or three days and then stops, that it can bog down and be lost, and that the practitioner's correct behaviour changes completely at that point.
So the marker is unmistakable and briefly available, which are uncomfortable properties to have together.
Someone in a difficult period, distracted, ill, or simply not paying attention for a week, would pass the threshold without registering it. And on the material's own account they would then continue with the body practices they should have dropped — which is the named catastrophe, arrived at not through pride but through inattention. See The Form School's Catastrophe.
Which means the better marker still fails in the case it was designed for: the practitioner alone, without a teacher, who does not know what to look for until afterwards.
