From two places, and they don't mix on their own. Three of the sphere's rings run on you. Four run on the universe. And one ring in the middle exists solely to lock the two together.
The inner three, Virtues and Statutes and Values, are how the apprentice provides energy from its own self to the sphere's core. That energy then combines with the external forces of the universe, and what results is described as a perfect balance between wizard and sphere. Those three rings are powered by the wizard's internal energy, and they charge as the individual masters the internal forces that cause reaction on the world.1
The outer four are called the Ontological Rings, and they carry three universal energies: the Universal Principles of Esophoros, the Universal Archetypes, and the Universal Laws.2 Those don't come from you. They're the universe's own supply.
Between them sits the Fourth Ring, and its importance is stated flatly. Without it the inner forces of the sphere could not join up with the external forces of the universe.3
Some background the ring system needs before any of this makes sense. The eight stations left standing at the sphere's equator form the Golden Ring — the archetypal ring, existing silently at the equator, and the primary matrix of the whole sphere. It's called the language the wizard will use to communicate with the universe, and every other structure in the sphere copies its form.4
From that Golden Ring, eight more rings protrude, all at equidistant points. Each has eight slots, and the apprentice mentally places structures into those slots the same way the Sephiroth were assigned. Some rings hold philosophical concepts, some magical constructs, some magical notions.
And they do work as well as hold. The rings collect magical energy from the adjoining universe and pass it to the centre of the sphere, where the wizard is waiting — gathered at the surface, transferred inward, and stored in a structure called the Horomulon.5
That storage structure gets one footnote and then vanishes from the curriculum. The Horomulon is the central nervous system of the Philosophical Sphere, and it will be explained later on in further works, because of its complex nature and multilayered existence.6
So the thing every ring feeds into — the place all the collected energy actually goes — is named, given a striking description, and deferred to a volume that isn't this one. It joins the School of Defenses, the six upper degrees of every school, the seventy untaught schools and the twenty-eight unused furnaces on the list of things this system says it has and doesn't show. Worth noting what that means practically: a practitioner can build all nine rings and still not be told what happens at the centre.
The Fourth Ring is the Ring of Esophoros, and what it does is mechanical. It gathers all the energy produced by the previous three rings — Virtues, Statutes and Values — and unites it with the external forces of the sphere and of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth rings. It merges both energies into one single cohesive and coherent stream of magical flux reaching the sphere's circumference.7
Then the image that gives this page its name. The ring takes the cosmogonic and cosmologic energies and the energy the wizard supplies, and interlocks them into gear. By engaging the external and internal forces together, the sphere springs into rotation, with magical flux running around the circumference at sub-luminal velocities — almost the speed of light — which allows the accretion and build-up of manifesting power for the wizard.8 So the sphere isn't a reservoir that fills. It's a rotating system that accumulates by spinning, and the spin only starts when both supplies are engaged. One alone turns nothing.
Esophoros gets an etymology, which is rare here — most of the coined vocabulary arrives unexplained.
The word joins two ancient Greek roots: Eson, related to Being, and sophoros, related to wisdom and light. Together they're read as the action of Wisdom being Light.9 That's a verb rather than a noun — wisdom being light, an ongoing action rather than a static attribute. Which fits what the ring does, since its whole job is a live conversion rather than a store.
Here's the consequence the structure forces, and it's the sharpest practical claim in the sphere chapter. The energy the first three rings amass into the sphere is stated to be that produced by Righteousness and Light. And therefore the apprentice must be aware of its actions, which should be balanced and harmonious in order to properly power the inner aspects of this magical tool.10
Read that as engineering rather than as moralising, because that's how it's written. The virtues aren't a code of conduct attached to magic for propriety's sake. They are one of the sphere's two power supplies, and conduct is the cable. A wizard who is resentful, arrogant, impatient or faithless isn't behaving badly — they have a dead supply on the inner three rings, and Esophoros has nothing from that side to interlock.
That also explains why the sphere can't be powered by knowledge alone. Study builds the sphere, since it's a thought-form made of understanding. But study charges nothing. The inner rings run on how you actually live, and without them the gearbox has one input and the wheel doesn't turn.
And it makes the First Ring's warning proportionate rather than pious. Someone practising with the wrong attitudes is told they'll be consumed little by little into the Darkest Pit — which, in this structure, is what you'd expect from a machine running on an unbalanced supply.
A structural problem arrives with the Fourth Ring and gets a specific fix. Esophoros has thirty-two concepts. Every ring has eight slots. Those don't fit, and the answer is that rings holding thirty-two aspects are Tetradimensional Rings — one ring which is, in essence, four layers, each layer holding eight concepts.11
The Esophoros thirty-two divide into four categories of eight: the Essence of the Divine (aspects that define divinity, bringing definition into the sphere's structure and letting the wizard experience living divinity in everything), the Attributes (the aspects of divine power, giving the sphere divine functions), the Actions (the wonderful acts of the divine, helping the wizard understand miraculous events), and the Manifestations (the great things created by the Eternal, brought into being by sheer divine force).
The instruction for this ring is a selection task rather than a drill, and it comes with a hint that's easy to skip past. For the moment, the apprentice selects eight concepts out of the thirty-two and places them in the first layer of the Ring of Esophoros. The other three layers are left for later. Before choosing, study the concepts very well, because they'll prove highly beneficial if chosen appropriately — the four tables are provided precisely to support that study.12
Then the hint, and it's the operative instruction: it is suggested to consider choosing at least one of every category. Essence, Attribute, Action, Manifestation. Given that the four categories are what the thirty-two are sorted into, taking all eight from one category would give you a layer that defines divinity beautifully and can do nothing, or one that acts constantly with nothing defined behind it. Nothing states that consequence. But the balance the ring exists to create is between kinds of energy, and the hint is the only place the material tells you the same balance applies inside a single layer.

The count works, but the Golden Ring is described as archetypal and silent rather than as a supply, and where it sits in the energy economy is not stated.
Follow the gearbox and the sphere is a balanced machine. Two supplies, one coupling, rotation only when both are engaged, and the wizard's job is to keep their side charged by living well. Failure is symmetrical and diagnosable — if the wheel isn't turning, one of two inputs is missing.
Follow the First Ring's warning and the system isn't symmetrical at all. Someone practising with the wrong attitudes doesn't get a stalled machine; they get the forces of evil playing with their life, consumed little by little into the Darkest Pit. That's not an unpowered ring. That's an active hazard.
So a lapse in conduct is described in two incompatible ways in the same chapter: as a supply going flat, and as an invitation to something. The first is recoverable by resuming the practice. The second isn't obviously recoverable at all, and nothing says which is happening to a wizard whose virtues have slipped.
Adaptive Scaling and the Siddhis — Both traditions have to answer what a practitioner's ordinary conduct has to do with their power, and both refuse to make it purely a matter of desert. Neither says you get abilities because you deserve them.
The mechanism here is a circuit. Conduct produces the energy that fills three of nine rings, Esophoros can only engage what it is given, and an unbalanced life leaves the coupling with one input. Virtue isn't rewarded — it is the supply, and the machine is indifferent to whether that seems fair.
Put beside a tradition that scales capacity to the practitioner's condition, the difference is what happens to a bad person who works hard. Where power scales adaptively, someone unready simply doesn't get very far and the ceiling does the protecting. Here there is no ceiling on the inner rings — there is a supply that runs on a specific kind of conduct, and everything else in the sphere still functions. A system that makes ethics a power source rather than a gate has to explain why a badly-lived wizard is weak rather than merely unqualified — and this one answers with a machine, then quietly adds a pit.
Sharpest implication. Conduct is wiring. The first three rings are charged by the wizard's own righteousness, the outer four by the universe, and Esophoros interlocks them into gear so the sphere spins at sub-luminal speed and accretes power. Without the inner supply the coupling has one input and nothing rotates — which makes the virtues a component rather than a courtesy.
