Push someone and they push back. Not because they disagree — because they are being pushed.
Coercion creates a reaction that will eventually work against you. You must seduce others into wanting to move in your direction. A person you have seduced becomes your loyal pawn. And the way to seduce others is to operate on their individual psychologies and weaknesses. Soften up the resistant by working on their emotions, playing on what they hold dear and what they fear. Ignore the hearts and minds of others and they will grow to hate you.1
⚠ Two claims, and they are not the same claim. One is that force is inefficient — it produces a reaction. The other is that neglect is fatal — ignore people and they come to hate you.
⚠ The chapter's Transgression proves the second and its Observance proves neither. Marie-Antoinette did not coerce anyone. She simply did not attend.
The Image commits the law to a single idea and it is the best-phrased thing in the chapter.
The Keyhole. People build walls to keep you out; never force your way in—you will find only more walls within walls. There are doors in these walls, doors to the heart and mind, and they have tiny keyholes. Peer through the keyhole, find the key that opens the door, and you have access to their will with no ugly signs of forced entry.2
⚠ Walls within walls is the argument's strongest form. Force does not fail because it is wrong; it fails because it generates more of what it is trying to get past, and each success reveals a further barrier.
⚠ And then the last clause changes the subject. No ugly signs of forced entry.
⚠ That is not an argument about efficacy. It is an argument about evidence. The keyhole is preferred because the break-in leaves no marks — ⚠ which quietly concedes that a break-in is what has occurred, and that its undetectability is the benefit.
🚩 ⚠ The Judgment says seduce people into wanting to move in your direction. The Keys say something else twice.
Those that overcome this prevailing coldness are the ones who find the key that unlocks the stranger's heart and mind, seducing him into their corner, if necessary softening him up for a punch.3
make those on your side convinced and excited by the cause you have enlisted them in; this will not only make your work easier but it will also give you more leeway to deceive them later on.4
⚠ Softening up for a punch and buying leeway to deceive are not alternatives to coercion. They are preparations for it.
⚠ And the chapter's own Observance supports the Judgment against its Keys. Chuko Liang wins Menghuo over and then "returned north with his army, leaving no occupying force. Liang never came back—he had no need to."
⚠ The corpus should record the divergence rather than resolve it, because it changes what the law is. On the Judgment's reading this is a chapter about durable consent — the alternative to a garrison. On the Keys' reading it is a chapter about anaesthesia — a way of reducing resistance before doing the thing they would have resisted. ⚠ The worked case is the first and the instructions are the second.
⚠ The Interpretation states the method, and it is not what the Judgment describes.
Force will only strengthen their resistance. With most people the heart is the key: They are like children, ruled by their emotions. To soften them up, alternate harshness with mercy. Play on their basic fears, and also their loves—freedom, family, etc. Once you break them down, you will have a lifelong friend.5
And in the Keys: "Play on contrasts like this: Push people to despair, then give them relief. If they expect pain and you give them pleasure, you win their hearts."6
⚠ This is not the absence of coercion. It is coercion cycled with relief — and the corpus should say plainly that it is the documented structure of the trauma bond, described here as a route to lifelong friendship.
⚠ See the dedicated page for the mechanism and its clinical counterpart. What belongs here is the contradiction: a law whose Judgment opens coercion creates a reaction that will eventually work against you recommends, forty lines later, pushing people to despair.
🚩 ⚠ With most people the heart is the key: They are like children, ruled by their emotions.
And in the Keys: "Do not believe that this approach works only with the illiterate and unschooled—it works on one and all."7
⚠ The second sentence is the better one and the first is the chapter's working assumption.
⚠ The corpus should mark why it matters operationally rather than morally. A model of the target as a child predicts that simplification is the technique — visceral metaphors, primary emotions, fear and love. ⚠ Greene's own best cases contradict it. Cyrus did not simplify; he constructed a two-day experiment and let the Persians draw the inference. Liang did not simplify; he ran a seven-iteration demonstration against a king who kept producing new objections.
⚠ Both cases treat the target as capable of reasoning and arrange the evidence rather than the feeling. The chapter's stated model would not have produced either.
🚩 ⚠ The Reversal, in its entirety:
There is no possible reversal to this Law.8
⚠ One sentence. No case, no boundary, no scope condition.
⚠ The corpus's shape tally records a refusal Reversal at Laws 35 and 37, and this is its third and flattest instance — the earlier two declined to supply a counter-case; this one declines to admit that one could exist. ⚠ Second shape to reach n=3, after boundary+new-technique (39, 42).
🚩 And the claim is false on the chapter's own materials. ⚠ Its own Keys describe cases where working on hearts and minds is the wrong move — where self-interest, not sentiment, "secures the deal" — and the corpus holds a fully-sourced counter-position in the mass-movement literature.
⚠ Document, don't endorse. A law with no stated limit is not a stronger law. It is an unfalsifiable one, and the corpus should treat the missing Reversal as the chapter's largest structural defect rather than as emphasis.
⚠ Strip the chapter to its two worked cases and a narrower, better law appears.
Marie-Antoinette's failure is inattention. ⚠ "Not once throughout her reign did she read a minister's report. Not once did she tour the provinces… Not once did she mingle among the Parisians." No coercion anywhere.
Liang's success is the removal of a reason to fight. ⚠ Seven captures, each release demonstrating that resistance was futile and surrender was survivable.
⚠ Neither is about charm, and neither is about emotion in the way the Keys describe. Both are about the target's forward calculation — what will happen to me if I go on as I am.
⚠ Which suggests the law's real content is narrower than work on hearts and minds and considerably more usable. Arrange matters so that the other party's own reasoning produces your outcome. Cyrus built a contrast and asked a question. Liang built a record and asked the same question seven times.
⚠ And it explains why the Keys feel thinner than the cases. The Keys describe manipulating a state — stir the primary emotions, jolt them, play on contrasts. ⚠ The cases describe changing a situation so that the conclusion follows. The second survives the target thinking about it afterwards; the first does not.
Establish whether your problem is force or neglect. ⚠ The law bundles two failures with different remedies. If people are resisting you, the diagnosis is pressure and the remedy is to stop applying it. If people are indifferent to you, the diagnosis is inattention and no amount of not-coercing will fix it. Marie-Antoinette's problem was the second.
Arrange the evidence, not the emotion. ⚠ Cyrus's Persians reached the conclusion themselves and it held. Build the contrast, ask the question, and let them say it — because a conclusion the other party articulates is one they will defend, and one you supplied is one they will re-examine.
Find the individual key by getting them to talk. ⚠ The Keys' most concrete instruction is also the least glamorous: "the more they talk, the more they reveal about their likes and dislikes—the handles and levers to move them with." Most people, on meeting someone, transmit. The technique is simply to stop.
⚠ And decide honestly which version you are running. If your goodwill is "softening him up for a punch," it will function until the punch lands and then reverse — because the person will re-read every prior kindness in the light of it. The durable version costs more and is the one Liang ran: the concession has to be real, and the army has to actually go home.
Strongest evidence. The Keyhole image is a genuine mechanism — force generates the resistance it is trying to overcome, so each success reveals another barrier — and the Transgression is a clean demonstration of the neglect failure, with the subject's own quoted line establishing that she understood the price and declined to pay it.
Tension — the Judgment and the Keys describe different laws. ⚠ Durable consent against anaesthesia before deception. Preserved, not resolved: the worked case supports the first and the instructions the second.
Tension — the Interpretation prescribes alternating coercion with relief in a chapter whose first sentence warns against coercion.
🚩 [POPULAR SOURCE] throughout. 🚩 ⚠ The Reversal is a single sentence denying that a limit exists, and it is false on the chapter's own materials. 🚩 They are like children is a working model the chapter's own best cases contradict. 🚩 The Image's final clause makes undetectability the benefit — no ugly signs of forced entry.
Open questions. ⚠ Does the seduced person stay seduced? Liang's Menghuo did, and Liang had given him a kingdom back. The chapter offers no case where the technique held without a material concession behind it. ⚠ And is individual psychology actually knowable at scale? The Keys' cases split between one-to-one work (Liang and a general) and mass work (Mao), and the chapter uses one word for both.
⚠ Napoleon's marginal contradicts Law 42 outright — "Working on leaders is the method of intrigue and only leads to secondary results. Working on the masses… changes the face of the world." ⚠ Law 42's entire Keys section is find the one head that matters. Adjacent chapters, direct contradiction, delivered by a marginal.
⚠ And the Authority is about persuading upward while the whole chapter persuades downward. Han Fei Tzu's second appearance after Law 40.
⚠ The Transgression is Law 41's Transgression one generation on — Louis XV's grandson's wife, the same court, the same collapse — and the diagnosis is Law 41's necessity argument restated as character: "pampered and indulged as children, as adults they still believe that everything must come to them." ⚠ Two chapters apart, no cross-reference.
⚠ Fifth consecutive law in which the marginals carry named works and the Keys' cases carry nothing. Herodotus, Aesop, Plutarch, Napoleon, Lawrence's Seven Pillars, Han Fei Tzu — against Mao, Frederick, Louis XIV and Liang's unnamed general.
Psychology — propaganda has always had a sword behind it. Persuasion and Coercion sets Hoffer against the assumption that the right message changes minds: propaganda cannot inculcate something wholly new, cannot keep people persuaded once they have stopped believing, and every mass movement that succeeded at scale did so with coercion as its primary mechanism — rhetoric working alongside force rather than instead of it.
Coercion creates a reaction that will eventually work against you.
The insight neither produces alone: ⚠ Greene presents seduction and coercion as alternatives and the mass-movement account says they are a pair — rhetoric does not replace force, it makes force tolerable and gives the already-coerced a reason to stay. ⚠ Which reframes the chapter's own Interpretation instead of contradicting it. Alternate harshness with mercy is not a departure from the Judgment; it is what the Judgment actually describes once you notice the harshness never left. ⚠ And it supplies the missing Reversal. The law fails precisely where there is no sword — where you have no capacity to impose anything, persuasion has to carry the whole load, and Hoffer's finding is that it cannot. ⚠ The corpus should record the consequence for the reader, which is unwelcome and clarifying: the hearts-and-minds technique is a supplement to leverage, not a substitute for it, and its most impressive historical demonstrations were all run by people who could also have used the sword and chose not to.
Business — the fact that arrives through a different channel. Self-Persuasion Principle puts the mechanism concretely: someone you trust tells you the new restaurant is good and you nod; you discover it yourself and you go. You knew the same thing in both cases. The fact came in through a different channel and arrived with a different weight.
Peer through the keyhole, find the key that opens the door.
What the pairing produces: ⚠ Greene's Keys are about finding the lever and pulling it — the handle, the primary emotion, the jolt — and the self-persuasion frame says the lever is not the variable. The same content, self-generated, moves people and, supplied, does not. ⚠ Which identifies what Cyrus actually did and what the Keys leave out: he did not tell the Persians they were oppressed. He gave them a day of thorn-bushes and a day of wine and asked which they preferred — and they said it. ⚠ And it explains the durability difference the chapter cannot account for. A conclusion you supplied is one the target will re-examine when circumstances change; one they reached is one they will defend against you. ⚠ The corpus should record the practical inversion: the work is not finding the key, it is constructing the situation in which they find it — which is slower, invisible, and the only version that survives the target thinking about it afterwards.
Sharpest implication. ⚠ Walls within walls is the real argument — force generates the resistance it is trying to overcome, so each success reveals another barrier. ⚠ And the Image's last clause changes the subject from efficacy to evidence: no ugly signs of forced entry concedes that a break-in has occurred and makes its undetectability the benefit. ⚠ The Judgment describes durable consent; the Keys describe anaesthesia before a punch — and the worked case supports the Judgment. ⚠ Both worked cases arrange the evidence rather than the emotion, against a stated model of the target as a child ruled by feeling. ⚠ And a law with no stated limit is not stronger, it is unfalsifiable.
Generative questions.
