Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln's successor as U.S. president, saw Ulysses S. Grant as a troublesome member of his government. So he isolated Grant, as a prelude to forcing him out. This only enraged the great general, however, who responded by forming a support base in the Republican party and going on to become the next president.1

Count the target's other memberships before you start. ⚠ Not their allies inside your structure — their structures. A party, a profession, a market, an audience, a former employer. Each one is a place the isolation does not reach and a place the grievance can be taken.
If the board is open, do not isolate. ⚠ The technique converts a difficult colleague into a motivated competitor with time on their hands. The Reversal's own advice is correct here and is the whole of it: keep them in, keep them busy, keep them visible.
If you must act, invert Johnson's ordering. ⚠ Proximity first, base second. Retain the person physically while the support underneath them is removed — because the physical removal supplies the grievance and the free time, and the base supplies the means. Johnson did it in exactly the wrong order.
⚠ And on the defensive side, this page is the chapter's best news. The thing that saved Grant was a membership Johnson could not touch, and it existed before the trouble started. ⚠ Cultivating one standing affiliation outside your primary structure is the single cheapest protection against everything in Law 42 — it converts a potentially fatal isolation into a career change, and it cannot be built after the isolation begins.

Isolation as Strategic Failure describes the instinct under threat: pull back, fewer people in the room, a smaller circle, tighter control over access. It feels like the responsible response, and the argument is that it is the specific move that kills you.
