The School of Enchantments

What Happens If You Use This to Get Your Way With People?

This is the school that works on how people feel — charming, fascinating, enthralling and mesmerising them, changing what they like and how they're disposed towards a thing.1 It also turns ordinary objects into magical ones, but the part that needs handling first is the part aimed at other people, because it comes with the sharpest warning in the whole curriculum.

The permitted use is narrow and stated up front: these are for when a goal of yours is being blocked by evil or corrupt people, never to harm or cause evil.2 Use them for selfish or wicked ends and it can end in fatal consequences for the caster.

Then the mechanism, and it's the specific thing that makes this school different from every other one. Misuse draws a retributive strike where the wizard falls under their own incantation.3 Not a punishment sent by something. The spell turns around and lands on the person who cast it — so a wizard who obfuscates someone into a permanent feeling is the one who ends up carrying it.

Four Strengths, Graded by What They Leave Behind

The four categories climb, and what separates them is duration and residue.4 Fascinos, fascinations, create or reduce an emotion or an attraction toward an object or a person. They can make feelings that weren't there and change somebody's mind about a situation. But they're brief, they aren't permanent, and there's a tell: the person usually ends up with a feeling that something happened.

Ensalmos, charms, are stronger versions of the same thing and last longer. And the difference that matters isn't the duration — it's that a charm leaves no feeling behind. The person feels at ease with their change of heart. Where a fascination is noticeable from inside, a charm isn't.

The Two That Don't Get Noticed

Falas, glamours, change how something looks — usually for the better, though they can also make a favourable appearance worse, or alter the qualities by which a thing gets appreciated. And Obsecos, obfuscations, are the strongest in the school: they can create a permanent emotion in a person, or towards an object, a situation or a place. These carry an explicit restriction: only when extremely necessary, and never to control or manipulate a person.

Read the ladder as a residue scale and it's uncomfortable. The weak version is detectable and temporary, the strong version undetectable and permanent. Effectiveness in this school is measured by how completely the subject fails to notice.

Why the Throat

The focal point is the throat, described as the magical centre for all kinds of communication and for the intention to convince.5

The mechanical reason is more specific than that, and it's the best explanation of a focal point anywhere in the ten. The throat is where the energies of the emotional areas merge with the energies of the mental areas — which is what makes it the central point for emotive communication and for convincing people. Below it, feeling. Above it, thought. The throat is the junction, and persuasion is exactly the operation that needs both at once.

Why Venus

The planet is Venus, associated with beauty, the arts and emotion — specifically love.6 The reason it matters here is stated as a mechanism rather than a mood: by projecting a beautiful emotion or a beautiful reality, other people become more favourable. So the working model of persuasion in this system is projection of something attractive, not pressure.

Why Netzach

The station is Netzach, and its list is unusually operational. It gives the wizard the ability of conquest, provides certainty, and makes anyone victorious over unconquerable odds. It confers the ability to undertake any artistic pursuit with beautiful and attractive results. And it empowers the wizard to call upon animals and command them.7 That last one arrives with no explanation and no connection to the rest of the school, and it's the reason the later conjuration spells for small animals sit where they do.

Analytical Case Study — The Free Will Clause at the End of the Drill

The praxis ends on something none of the other exercises do. After the four steps, the closing instruction is that once you can confer magical energy on every word you speak — magical or ordinary — then great care, attention and responsibility must be exercised in order not to break the free will of others.8

Look at what that assumes. The trained capacity isn't a spell you choose to cast. It's a permanent property of your speech, applying to ordinary words as much as to incantations. There's no off switch mentioned. Which makes the ethics of this school continuous rather than occasional: you don't decide whether to enchant somebody, you decide constantly not to.

And that lines up exactly with the retributive strike. A penalty that fires automatically is the right kind of penalty for a capacity that's always on. Nothing here polices intent at the moment of casting, because there is no single moment of casting — so the enforcement has to be a mechanism rather than a rule, and the mechanism is that the incantation comes home to you.

Implementation Workflow — Charging the Throat, Then Watching What You Say

Four steps, about fifteen minutes.9 Sit somewhere quiet and breathe undisturbed for at least five minutes, then hold both hands in front of each other.

Focus on your throat. With each inhalation, feel it surge with illuminating power. With every exhalation, feel the potential for every word vibrating inside the throat — and feel that light vibrating with power and intention. The instruction is not to say anything. It's to feel the potential of unsaid words, which is a strange and quite precise thing to ask.

Keep that going about ten minutes. Then put your right hand on your throat and feel how the light there combines with the words you pronounce — and how that combination has great power over everything, compelling everything to follow the instructions of the Magic Voice.

Then the ending above: once you can do this, every word you speak carries magical energy, so take care not to break anybody's free will. The drill has no exit ramp. What you build in fifteen minutes is described as permanent, and the last line of the technique is a moral constraint rather than a step.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The school, its categories and its correspondences are asserted with no tradition named and nothing quoted. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.

🚩 The category names — Fascinos, Ensalmos, Falas, Obsecos — are Latin-surfaced coinages. Ensalmo is a real Spanish word for a healing charm or incantation, which is the clearest trace anywhere of the author's own language showing through the invented Latin.

Netzach is credited with conferring command over animals, which has no stated relation to enchantment, beauty or persuasion. It is reported as given.

Unresolved in the material: charms are said to be more potent than fascinations and to leave no trace, while fascinations leave the subject feeling that something happened. That makes detectability inversely related to power, which is nowhere acknowledged as a problem despite the school's heavy ethical framing.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow the ethical framing and this school is hedged harder than any other. Never to harm. Never for selfish intent. Only when a goal is blocked by evil or corrupt people. Never to control or manipulate. Never to break free will. Five separate restrictions in one short section.

Follow the capability list and the school is built to do exactly the thing being forbidden. Create sentiments that aren't there. Change someone's mind about a situation. Leave them at ease with a change of heart they didn't choose. Install a permanent emotion. The strongest category is defined by its permanence, and permanence is the one thing a person cannot consent to after the fact.

The two are never set against each other, and the gap is where a practitioner actually lives. A goal blocked by a corrupt person is exactly the situation in which somebody will judge their own motives generously, and the only check offered is a penalty that arrives after the fact.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

The Four Boundaries to Influence — Both are describing the same operation from opposite ends. The influence material maps what makes a person say yes to something they'd normally refuse, sorting the limits into behavioural, context and others — the finding being that most apparent hard limits aren't about the behaviour at all, they're about which boundary the situation crosses. This school is doing that work magically, and its ladder is built on the same insight: a fascination is resisted because the subject notices it, and a charm succeeds because they don't.

What the pairing shows is that both traditions arrived at the same measure of success, and only one of them flinched. In each system the strongest technique is the least detectable one, and the subject's agreement afterwards is not evidence that anything was agreed to. The influence material treats this as a technical fact and sorts it into a model. This school treats it as a technical fact and then attaches a supernatural penalty, because it has nowhere else to put the objection.

That is a real difference in what a body of knowledge can do about its own dangers. A secular technique of influence can only offer a boundary the practitioner chooses to respect. A magical one can claim the universe enforces it — and the retributive strike is exactly that claim, doing the job that ethics does on the other side. There is no way to test whether it fires. What it does show is that the danger was seen clearly enough to need a mechanism built for it.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. What you train here isn't a spell, it's a property of your voice. Once the throat is charged, every word you speak carries magical energy — ordinary words included — so there is no moment of casting to police. That is why the safeguard is an automatic penalty rather than a rule: the incantation returns to the wizard, because nothing else could catch a capacity that never switches off.

Generative questions.

  • Detectability falls as power rises: fascinations are felt, charms aren't, obfuscations are permanent. Does the retributive strike scale the same way, or does it fire equally on all four?
  • The permitted use is against people who are evil or corrupt. Who decides, and does the strike care whether the judgement was right?
  • Netzach confers command over animals inside a school about persuading people. Is an animal being persuaded here, or commanded — and does the free-will clause cover it?
