Visions Are Not Prophecy

A Vision Has a Job, and the Job Is Not to Tell You Anything

The function is stated three times in slightly different words, and the three together give the whole account.

"All these visions are just a focus of attention to keep the mind occupied in one-pointedness for awhile, to acknowledge the cultivation progress, and to entice practitioners forward."7

Three jobs, and none of them is informational.

A focus of attention. The vision is a concentration object that arrives unbidden. It holds the mind on one thing, which is the same service a mandala or a skeleton performs deliberately.

An acknowledgement of progress. A receipt. Something happened, and here is a marker of it.

An enticement forward. Something shown that makes continuing more attractive than stopping.

Add a fourth, given separately, which is the strangest and the most specific: some projections are meant "to simply keep you mentally busy and detached from being fixated on certain processes which are occurring."6

A distraction, deliberately supplied. Something is happening in the body that the practitioner should not be watching, and the vision occupies them elsewhere while it completes.

Every one of those is a use, and a use is not a message. The content of a vision is chosen for what it does to you, not for what it reports — which is the whole reason it cannot function as a prediction.

The Future Can Always Be Changed

The reason given for excluding prophecy is not that visions are unreliable. It is more fundamental than that.

"The future can always be changed because karma can always change and is being changed all the time."3

There is no fixed future to see. Not seeing it is hard, not the seers are usually wrongthe object does not exist in the form a prophecy would require.

That is a much stronger argument than a sceptical one, and it lands differently. A sceptic says the vision is not evidence of the future. This says there is nothing for it to be evidence of, because the thing it would have to depict is under continuous revision.

The direct statements follow from it. Visions "are an illusion that has nothing to do with a prophecy of future events,"1 and they "do not necessarily represent things the way they really are, nor do they represent accurate predictions or prophecies of the future."2

Note the doubled scope in the second: not the future, and not the present either. Things the way they really are is a claim about now. A vision is not a window in any temporal direction.

Which is consistent and it has an uncomfortable consequence the material does not draw out. If karma changes continuously, then any accurate prediction would be a report about something that had stopped being changeable — and nothing in this framework has that status. See The Visions Are Fictitious.

Why You Need Occupying Right Then

The distraction function has a specific setting, and knowing the setting is what makes it practically useful.

Visions are expedients designed to keep the practitioner concentrating while the kundalini is at peak activity, "because its fullness will indeed rise and fall," with interruptions in practice at this stage severely delaying the entire sequence of transformations.2

Three things about that window.

The yang chi is at peak and it does not stay there. Fullness rises and falls, on its own schedule. There is a period during which something is available, and it closes.

Interruption during it is expensive. Not costly — severely delaying the entire sequence. A break at this point does not set you back a week; it puts the whole ordered progression out.

And the practitioner's own attention is the risk. What threatens the window is the mind wandering, disengaging, or fixating on the process itself — which is why an occupying object is supplied rather than an instruction.

So the vision arrives exactly where a concentration object is most needed and least producible by effort. You cannot hold a mandala steady while something extraordinary is happening in your body. Something else has to do the holding, and the material's account is that something else does.

Which reframes the whole class. A vision at peak activity is scaffolding, and scaffolding is removed. Asking what it meant is asking what the scaffolding was trying to tell you. See Clicks, Visions and Voices Are Channel Artifacts.

Fitted to the Individual

The content is described as personalised, and the personalisation is the strongest evidence for the functional reading.

Visions are "skillful cultivation assistance appropriate to the individual, differing for each according to background."1

Differing for each according to background. Which is exactly what you would expect of a tool and exactly what you would not expect of a report. A message about reality would be the same message. A device for holding a particular person's attention has to be built from materials that hold that person.

Some visions represent "the practitioner's present cultivation stage to inspire them,"6 which is the acknowledgement function — and note that even this one is described as inspirational rather than diagnostic. It is shown to inspire, not to inform.

The general consequence for reading anyone's vision, including one's own: the imagery tells you about the recipient, and the timing tells you about the stage. The imagery is drawn from their culture, their memory, their expectations and their tradition's trained anticipations — none of which is information about the world. See The Vision Is Culturally Supplied.

Analytical Case Study: Demons, Heavens, Hells and Voices

The catalogue of what shows up at the far end is given without hedging, and it is the sharpest instance because of what is on the list.

"You will see all sorts of things such as attacks by demons, visits by other beings, trips to heaven and hell, that are all fictitious visions."4 And: "You should never believe anything you hear via 'heavenly voices' during these experiences either."4

Look at what has been ruled out.

Attacks by demons — the entire adversarial-testing frame. Something appears to oppose you, and it is not opposition.

Visits by other beings — the encounter frame. Something appears to communicate, and the communication is not the point.

Trips to heaven and hell — the cosmological-tour frame, which is the single most productive genre in the visionary literature of every tradition.

And heavenly voices — the auditory channel, named separately and excluded specifically, with never believe anything you hear as the instruction.

That is a comprehensive exclusion, and its comprehensiveness is what makes it usable. There is no residual category of the genuine vision. No test is offered because no test is needed — the class is uniform.

Which is unusually clean advice for this territory. Most instructions here require a judgement the practitioner is not equipped to make. This one requires none: whatever it is, do not act on its content. See The Masquerade Uses Your Dead.

The corroboration offered is that this is not an idiosyncratic position: pneumatology's common theme is that most such encounters should be ignored, and "most all schools, especially the Zen school, rightfully tell people to ignore such things as illusions."8 [n=1 REPORTED] — the convergence is asserted, and no pneumatological source is named. See Pneumatology Agrees: Ignore Them.

Implementation Workflow

Take the timing. Discard the content. Act on neither.

When a vision arrives, note the date and keep going. The one thing it reliably indicates is that you are somewhere in a process — most likely at or near a peak. That is worth recording and it is the whole of what is worth recording. See The Proximate Attainment Diary.

Do not make a decision on the basis of one. No move, no marriage, no resignation, no warning to anybody. The exclusion is total and it covers the pleasant visions as fully as the frightening ones.

Do not believe the voices. Named separately for a reason: an auditory instruction is far more actionable than an image, and therefore far more dangerous. Never believe anything you hear is the stated rule.

Do not fight the frightening ones. Attacks by demons are on the fictitious list. Resisting an attack is engaging with it, which is the opposite of the instruction, and it converts a distraction into an event that occupies weeks.

Do not chase the pleasant ones. A vision that acknowledged progress has done its job; trying to get it back turns a receipt into a goal.

And do not stop practising. This is the operative point and it is the one the window explains. The period when visions arrive is the period when interruption costs most — so the correct response to something extraordinary is to continue the same practice unchanged, which is also the hardest thing to do at that moment.

Immediate Effect, Not a Standard for Centuries

The reading extends to scripture, and the extension is where the position gets genuinely consequential.

Many things in the Bible through Revelation are given as examples of the nirmanakaya projection process, "produced to impress the recipient (for an immediate effect) and not meant to be taken as literal standards for centuries."5

Two audiences and two timescales, and the whole claim is that they were confused.

The recipient, then. A person in a specific state at a specific moment, given something calculated to have an effect on them — impress, occupy, encourage, redirect. Fitted to their background, as all of them are.

Everyone else, since. Readers treating a personalised, functional, momentary device as a standing description of reality — and building on it.

For an immediate effect is the load-bearing phrase. A device built for one moment's effect is not built to be true, and is not built to be durable. Preserving it and treating it as doctrine is a category error about what kind of object it was.

Which produces a reading of the visionary literature that is more corrosive than the ordinary sceptical one. The sceptic says the visions did not happen. This says they happened, functioned correctly, and were then archived by people who mistook a tool for a testimony. See Scripture as Projection Record.

Why There Is Nobody in the Room to Tell You

The reason this has to be written down at all is given, and it explains the whole existence of the instruction.

The process is "normally completed within a sealed retreat under the watchful eyes of a master who is present" — with explanations provided for solo practitioners because most "will not have the teachings or an enlightened master available to help them."9

The design assumes a master in the room. Someone present who has been through it, who sees what is happening from outside, and who can say that is nothing, keep going at the moment it would otherwise take a week to work out.

And a sealed retreat. No interruptions — which is precisely the condition the window requires, and it is arranged structurally rather than left to the practitioner's discipline.

The solo practitioner has neither, and this is the substitute: a written account, read in advance, standing in for a person who would have said it at the right moment.

That is an honest account of what the instruction is, and it names its own limitation. A written rule cannot see you. It cannot tell you that this particular thing is nothing, because it does not know what happened. What it can do is remove the entire category from consideration in advance — which is why the exclusion is total rather than discriminating.

The blanket rule is the form the advice has to take when nobody is watching. A master could afford nuance. A book cannot.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Evidence. [PRACTITIONER SOURCE]. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE. 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — no pneumatological work is named, no Zen source is cited for the ignore-them instruction, and Revelation is characterised without a passage. [SPECULATIVE] — the nirmanakaya-projection mechanism is asserted throughout.

Tension — fictitious, and read as records. Visions are declared uniformly illusory here, while the wider method reads visionary passages in scripture as accurate reports of physical stages. Both are stated; the reconciliation — that the timing is informative and the content is not — is never made explicit.

Tension — projections supplied by beings, and imaginations from your own memory. Two different mechanisms are offered for the same phenomenon and neither is preferred. They have very different implications: one makes a vision a communication with a sender, the other makes it self-generated.

Open question — how is a projection distinguished from perception? The stated answer is that only a master would know, and regular people cannot. Which means the practitioner is told to disregard an entire class of experience they are also told they cannot identify.

Open question — what happens if you do engage? Interruption at peak is said to delay the whole sequence severely. Whether engaging with a vision counts as interruption, and how much it costs, is not said.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two positions on visionary material run through this material and both are held firmly.

Visions are functional and empty. Illusions, expedients, scaffolding, personalised to background, produced for immediate effect, and reporting nothing about anything. The instruction is to ignore them entirely, and the exclusion covers demons, beings, heavens, hells and voices without residue.

And visionary material is the primary evidence base. Jacob's ladder decoded as three channels. Milarepa's thousand as the crown's petals. Isis's horns as the differentiated channels. Revelation, Genesis, the Song of Solomon — the entire decoding project runs on treating visionary and symbolic material as a reliable record of physical stages.

The tension is not incidental; it is between the practice instruction and the research method. A practitioner is told to disregard exactly the class of material a reader is told to mine.

The convergence is on the referent. Both positions agree that something physical and stageable is happening, that the stages are the same for everyone, and that the imagery is local. The disagreement is only about whether a locally-supplied wrapper preserves anything about what it wrapped.

Which points at the position that would reconcile them and is never stated: the imagery is evidence of timing, not of structure. That would license the decodes at their weakest and disallow them at their most confident — and it is closer to what the fiction claim actually supports than what the decoding chapters assume. See The Mirror That Does Not Cling.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Divination and Its Rejection — The Rationalist Arc of Chinese Military Thought — history.

Chinese military thought ran the same argument to a conclusion this material does not reach, and the endpoint is instructive.

The arc: the Shang treated divination as the primary mechanism for military decision — oracle bones recording whether to attack, which direction to march, what the outcome would be, with Heaven's answer binding. By Wei Liao-tzu the position had reversed entirely: do not follow spirits and ghosts; do not rely on auguries and portents. Then Li Ching, in the Tang, arrived somewhere stranger than either. He did not argue for abandoning divination. He argued for retaining it as a deception tool — "if we apparently put faith in yin and yang divination practices, we can manipulate the greedy and stupid. They cannot be abandoned."

Not epistemology. Morale engineering. Heaven is not consulted; the appearance of consulting Heaven is manufactured, for an audience that requires divine sanction before it can act.

Set that beside the account here and the parallel is exact for two of the three steps.

Both traditions demote the vision from evidence to instrument. Wei Liao-tzu's rejection and they are an illusion that has nothing to do with a prophecy of future events are the same move, made about the same class of phenomenon, on the same grounds — the thing does not report.

And both then notice the instrument still works. Li Ching keeps divination because the appearance of sanction motivates men. This material keeps visions because they hold attention, acknowledge progress and entice practitioners forward. Neither denies the effect. Both relocate it from the content to the function.

Where they diverge is the interesting part, and it is a divergence about who is holding the instrument.

Li Ching's practitioner is the commander, who knows the divination is theatre and deploys it on troops who do not. The manipulation is deliberate and the manipulator is exempt.

Here the practitioner is the troops. The visions are supplied — by other beings, or by the practitioner's own subconscious — and the person they work on is the person receiving them. The instruction is to be the commander about your own experience: to know that the sanction is manufactured while still being the audience for it.

The insight neither field produces alone: once a phenomenon is reclassified from evidence to instrument, the only remaining question is who is aiming it. Chinese military thought answered the commander, at his men, and got a doctrine of managed deception. This material answers the process, at you, for your benefit — and that answer is doing enormous work while resting on nothing, because a supplied enticement that keeps you practising and a supplied enticement that keeps you compliant are indistinguishable from inside. Which is precisely the position Li Ching's troops were in.

The Live Edge

The unresolved thing is whether a total exclusion is survivable as advice.

The rule is clean because it admits nothing: every vision, every voice, every visit, every heaven and hell, fictitious. And its cleanness is its virtue — it requires no judgement from someone who has no basis for one, and it is safe under every reading.

But the same material builds its entire method on visionary material being informative. Not as a lapse, but as the project. If the exclusion holds strictly, the decoding chapters are reading noise; if the decoding chapters are sound, the exclusion is overbroad and there is a class of vision that carries something.

Nothing here draws the boundary, and the boundary is what a practitioner would actually need.

There is a version that would work and it is visible in the material without being stated: the exclusion is about action and the decodes are about interpretation. Never act on a vision, and read visions afterwards, at a distance, in aggregate, across many practitioners — where the local content averages out and only the recurring formal features survive. That would make the two positions consistent, and it would make individual visions worthless while the collected record remained informative.

It would also invalidate a good number of the readings, which routinely take content rather than form from single episodes. And it leaves the sharpest question standing: if a vision cannot tell the person having it anything at all, what exactly is being transmitted when the same vision is read centuries later by somebody else?
