Scripture as Projection Record

Someone Wrote Down What He Saw, and It Was Never Meant for You

The claim is that a large class of scriptural visionary material is a record of experiences produced for one person, in one situation, and preserved by accident of transmission.

"Many, many things in the Bible (all the way to Revelations) are examples of the nirmanakaya projection process; they do not exist in truth but only were only appearances produced to impress the recipient (for an immediate effect) and not meant to be taken as literal standards for centuries."1

Three claims stacked. The appearances were produced. They do not exist in truth. They were for an immediate effect on one recipient.

And the last is the operative one. Not meant to be taken as literal standards for centurieswhich is a statement about the mismatch between what a vision was for and what a canon does with it.

The Zen classification is given alongside. Most of these are called illusions, or mara.1 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY [SPECULATIVE] — no biblical passage is examined and no Zen source is cited.

Which makes this page a claim about a genre rather than about any text, and that is how the vault carries it: the mechanism is the content; the application to scripture is a reading.

Only Appropriately Invented for Those Individuals

The specific diagnosis of why later readers cannot decode these passages has two parts, and the second is the unusual one.

Modern Jewish and Christian interpreters cannot figure out the meanings"not just because they never went through the process themselves, but because the events (seeing thrones, wheels, divinities with animal heads, etc.) were only appropriately invented for those individuals."2

Only appropriately invented for those individuals is the claim that goes beyond the usual one.

The ordinary version says the reader lacks the experience. This version says there is nothing general to have. The vision was fitted to one person's background, psychology and situationso even a reader who had the corresponding experience would see something else.

And the general principle is stated. Visions are a type of skillful cultivation assistance appropriate to the individual, different for each according to background.3

Which has a sharp consequence for the whole decoding enterprise. If visionary content is individually fitted, then no vision report is a description of a shared landscapeand cross-referencing visions between traditions or between practitioners is comparing tailored objects.

Which is a deflationary position held from inside a devotional framework, and it is stated without hedging. See The Vision Is Culturally Supplied.

The Damage Is in the Transmission

The harm identified is not in the vision or in its recipient, and locating it precisely is what makes this more than scepticism.

Such recountings are passed along and cause "a heap of trouble for later generations who aren't privy to these explanations of the purification stages of the path."3

A heap of trouble for later generationsand the cause named is the missing explanation, not the vision.

Which puts the failure in the archive rather than in the experience. The recipient understood what they were having, or at least had it. The trouble begins when the record circulates without the frame that made it intelligible.

And that identifies a specific and general mechanism. A record of a private, fitted experience, preserved without its interpretive context, becomes a public standardbecause a canon has no way to mark something as not for you.

Which explains the shape of the problem better than a claim about credulity would. Nobody deceived anybody. The vision was produced for a purpose, the recipient recorded it, copyists preserved it, and the context did not survive the copying.

And it makes the corrective conceptually simple and practically unavailable. Restore the frame. Which requires knowing the purification stagesthe thing the account says the western traditions no longer recognise.6 See The Mystic Is a Belittling Term.

The Multi-Armed Deities, Same Analysis

The claim is extended eastward, and the extension is what shows it is not aimed at one tradition.

The multi-armed and multi-headed deities of India are given as further examples of skillful means produced for a specific situation"based on what is already in their mind, and only relevant to the individual's personal psychology and situation."1

Which applies the same deflation to the account's own tradition-cluster, and that consistency is worth crediting. The analysis is not their visions are projections and ours are real.

And based on what is already in their mind is the mechanistic half. The vision is assembled from the recipient's existing contentswhich is why it is legible to them and opaque to everyone else.

The consequence is stated directly. "This is another reason why the descriptions of spiritual things vary across cultures."1

Which is a real explanandum with a real answer. Cross-cultural variation in visionary content is exactly what an individually-fitted-assembly account predictsand it is what a shared-landscape account struggles with.

And it sets the limit on iconographic decoding generally. If a multi-armed deity was assembled for one practitioner's psychology, then reading its arms as a general anatomical statement is reading a personal artefact as a public map.

Which the account does elsewhere, at length. The tension is not acknowledged. See Iconography as Attainment Record.

Analytical Case Study: Thrones, Wheels, Animal Heads

The three examples named are worth taking seriously, because they are the strongest and weakest case for the thesis at once.

Thrones, wheels, divinities with animal heads.2 Ezekiel's inventory, in effect.

What supports the reading. The material is famously resistant to interpretation, it is described in the first person as something seen, and its imagery is not systematically related to anything else in its own tradition. A private, fitted vision is a genuinely economical explanation for a passage like that.

And the account's alternative is worse than it looks. Reading such passages as literal cosmology has produced centuries of incompatible schemes — which is what the heap of trouble names.3

What undercuts it. The imagery is not idiosyncratic at all. Composite animal-headed divinities and wheeled thrones are standard Near Eastern royal and religious iconographywhich means the content is explained by the visionary's cultural surround without any projection process.

And that explanation is nearly identical to the account's ownbased on what is already in their mind1except that it requires no producing agent.

Which is the case's finding, and it is a useful one. The mechanism the account describes is well-supported and the agency it attributes is not. Visions assembled from the recipient's existing contents, fitted to their situation, illegible to later readersall of that stands. That a nirmanakaya projection did the assembling is the part with nothing behind it.

And the vault carries the mechanism accordingly. [SPECULATIVE] on the agency; the assembly claim is the durable part.

Implementation Workflow

1. Treat visionary passages as records, not instructions. Produced for an immediate effect on one recipient1not designed to be followed.

2. Do not build a cosmology from a vision report. Not meant to be taken as literal standards for centuries.1 The account's central warning.

3. Do not compare your visions to a text's. Each is fitted to the individual according to background.3 A mismatch is predicted; a match would be the surprising thing.

4. Ignore the phenomena when they arrive. Pneumatology's common theme is that most encounters should be ignored"it doesn't say particular phenomenon didn't arise — it just says to ignore them."4 A western tradition arriving at the same handling.

5. Look for the stage, not the content. What is transferable is the purification stage a vision accompanied, if anything is. The imagery is the individual part.

6. Expect the vision to distract. Visions tend "to cheat you in order to distract you."9 Treat interest in the content as the failure mode.

7. Do not assume a text's obscurity means a lost doctrine. On this account it may mean there was never anything general therewhich is a different problem from a lost key, and it has no solution.

8. Hold the decodes elsewhere in this material against this page. If visions are individually fitted, iconographic decoding is reading personal artefacts as public maps. The account does both and does not reconcile them.

Why the Orthodox Traditions Lost the Key

The account explains the interpretive failure structurally, and the explanation is the same one it gives everywhere.

Commentators cannot fathom the meanings"the teachings of these stages are not even within the Jewish, Christian and Moslem traditions for practically no stages of spiritual gong-fu are recognized in the orthodox side of the western religions."6

Which locates the loss in the category system rather than in the archive. The texts survived; the frame that would classify them did not.

And what the traditions did instead is described precisely. Religious authorities took the material as entailing other meanings they could understand, resorting to interpretations about love, Israel or Jesus"that have absolutely nothing to do with the stage of cultivation being described even though the invented meanings are quite clever."7

Quite clever is the concession that keeps the observation honest. A reading community that must find a usable meaning will find a good one, and its quality is evidence about the community rather than about the text.

Which is a genuine hazard in interpretation and it applies to this account too. The cultivation reading is also an invented meaning supplied by someone with a frameworkand it is also clever.

And the certainty attached to one such reading is stated in the strongest available terms. **The Song of Solomon is "absolutely, one hundred percent for certain" talking about a stage of cultivation gong-fu, "which is why it is included within the Old Testament."8 Details said to "unmistakably reveal in symbolic form the initial opening of the heart chakra and the coursing of the yang chi through the sushumna."5

Which sits oddly on a page whose thesis is that such material was fitted to individuals and is not a general standard. See The Song of Solomon Is a Gongfu Record.

The Deception Was Done in a Helpful Way

The account's handling of the honesty question is where its position becomes genuinely strange, and it does not flinch from it.

Visions tend "to cheat you in order to distract you," with "the deception done in a helpful way."9 **The masquerade is "always done out of compassion to help lead practitioners forward in their spiritual cultivation."9

Deception, cheating, masqueradethe account's own words, applied to what it holds to be benevolent agency.

Which is coherent within the framework. A device fitted to a practitioner's mind, presented as real because presenting it as a device would not work, is a skillful means in the technical sense.

And it explains the strange combination this material holds throughoutvisions are fictitious, and they are provided; their content is false, and their arrival is purposeful.

But the cost is that nothing in a vision can be trusted, including its apparent benevolence. If the content is deceptive by design, then a vision that feels compassionate is exhibiting a designed feature.

Which is why the practical instruction ends up identical to the sceptical one. Ignore them.4 Two entirely different theories of what visions are, arriving at the same handling.

And that convergence is the most useful thing on this page. A practitioner does not need to settle whether visions are projections, artefacts or noiseevery available account recommends the same response.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

🚩 SINGLE SOURCE [PRACTITIONER SOURCE] — the projection thesis comes from one account.

🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY — no biblical passage is examined in the original, no Zen source is cited for the mara classification, and no Indian text is cited for the deity claim.12

[SPECULATIVE] — the nirmanakaya agency; the assembly mechanism is the more defensible half.

Tension within the subject. Visionary material is said to be individually fitted and not a general standard,12 and specific scriptural passages are then decoded as descriptions of general anatomical events with total certainty.58 The two positions cannot both hold for the same texts.

Tension in method. The commentators' error is diagnosed as fitting the text to a meaning they could understand.7 The cultivation reading performs the same operation with a different framework, and the account does not acknowledge the symmetry.

Open question. No criterion distinguishes a projection record from a genuine stage description. Both are claimed to exist in the same corpus — Ezekiel's wheels are the first, the Song of Solomon the second — and nothing states how to tell them apart.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Convergent: the deflationary treatment of visionary content is consistent across traditions here — biblical, Indian and Tibetan material receive the same analysis.13

Divergent: the same account that says such material was never meant as a general standard reads specific passages as general standards with maximum confidence.8 Both preserved. See Don't Be Wed to My Interpretations — the account's own disclaimer, which covers this page's readings and not its certainty.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Paris Peace Agreements Misinterpretation — the history case examines a document read for decades according to a frame its drafters did not share, where the misreading was not careless but structurally required — the reading community had no category for what the text was actually doing. That is this page's mechanism with the metaphysics removed, and the comparison is what makes the mechanism checkable. The insight neither domain supplies alone: the historical case shows that context-stripped documents get reinterpreted by whoever holds them, and that the replacement reading is typically coherent, defensible and wrongwhich is precisely the quite clever concession here.7 And it supplies the corrective this page cannot supply for itself: the diplomatic misreading was identified by recovering the drafting context from independent records, not by proposing a better interpretation. Which is what a projection-record thesis would need and does not have — evidence about the recipient's situation, from outside the text being decoded.

The Live Edge

The assembly mechanism is well-motivated and the agency behind it is asserted. Visions built from the recipient's existing contents, fitted to their situation, illegible to later readersthat account explains cross-cultural variation better than a shared-landscape account does, and it needs no projecting agent.

The live edge is the missing criterion. This account holds that some scriptural visionary material is a private projection record with nothing general in it, and that other scriptural material is an exact description of a universal physical stage.15 Nothing distinguishes them. Both are first-person, both are strange, both resisted their traditions' commentators. A stated test — one feature that marks a passage as general rather than fitted — is what the entire decoding project rests on, and it is absent.

The Mystic Is a Belittling Term
In the western religious traditions, the people who reached the attainment stages were given a name, and the name did the work of dismissing them.
